Chiefs signed two proven veterans to practice squad on Wednesday

The #Chiefs signed two tested veterans to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs added defensive tackle Danny Shelton and defensive back Deon Bush to their practice squad on Wednesday according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Both veterans saw action with Kansas City in the preseason and were surprise cuts on Tuesday when the team trimmed their roster to the NFL-mandated 53-player threshold.

While Shelton and Bush certainly would have preferred to make the 53-man roster instead of landing on Kansas City’s practice squad, they will have the opportunity to be elevated to play in regular season games if injuries necessitate their involvement.

Shelton was a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft and won his first Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs last season. Bush entered the league a year after Shelton in 2016 as a fourth-round selection and was also on Kansas City’s championship roster in 2022.

While neither is likely to see action in the Chiefs’ first regular season game next week, they will provide valuable depth that Kansas City can lean on as their title defense campaign progresses.

The Kansas City Chiefs released a pair of veteran defenders on Tuesday as they cut their roster to 53 players.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs parted ways with defensive tackle Danny Shelton and safety Deon Bush.

Shelton was a member of the Chiefs practice squad last season with years of experience, including a Super Bowl run with the New England Patriots in 2019. He has worked hard throughout training camp and the preseason to get in great shape and served as a mentor to the younger defensive linemen. He recorded a sack in the Chiefs’ first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints a few weeks ago.

Bush was also a member of the Chief’s Super Bowl-winning roster last season as he joined the team in 2022 after starting his career with the Chicago Bears. Bush had 11 tackles in 16 games as a reserve for the Chiefs last year. The 30-year-old former Miami Hurricane brought an extra veteran presence to the secondary unit.

Chiefs DL Danny Shelton wants to recreate iconic ‘Bloated Tebow’ play

#Chiefs DL Danny Shelton is keen to re-create one of Kansas City’s most iconic plays of the Andy Reid era in 2023.

Though the end of the preseason may doom his wishes to go unfulfilled, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Danny Shelton wants to re-create an iconic play from the team’s history during the 2023 season.

The appropriately named “Bloated Tebow” pass was a play designed for defensive tackle Dontari Poe back in 2016 where the lineman took a snap from shotgun on the goal line and threw the ball to former Chiefs tight end Demetrius Harris for a touchdown.

When a fan on Twitter tagged Shelton in a post and asked for the play to be featured this season, the former first-round pick made it clear that passes like these are in his wheelhouse.

“Always wanted to do this,” Shelton wrote. “Gotta check it off my bucket list.”

Shelton may get his chance to revive this spectacular play in 2023 if Kansas City jumps out to a big lead against another divisional opponent at some point during their Super Bowl defense campaign.

Chiefs DT Danny Shelton cut weight, feels ‘great’

Danny Shelton lost some weight in the offseason, and feels ‘great’ heading into the 2023 season.

Battling for a spot on the 53-man roster, Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Danny Shelton made a small change that could go a long way in helping his on-field performance.

The 30-year-old lineman, who is listed around 6-foot-2 and 345 pounds, shed a bit of weight, improving the way he moves and feels.

“This time last year I was probably like upper (3)50s,” Shelton said during Monday’s press conference. “Right now I’m about 12 pounds under. I used to use intermittent fasting but then I got stuck, it wasn’t working anymore. I did carb cycling in March in OTAs and it worked like magic for me. (My) energy has been great, feel great, joints feel great and everything.”

It may not seem like much, but cutting even five or 10 pounds can make a big difference for a normal person, let alone someone who plays a sport that favors those with speed. And Shelton, who was on the Chiefs’ roster last year but only played in one game, needs every bit of an advantage he can get to make his way back onto the team’s 53-man roster when cut day arrives on August 29.

Shelton has had a very good preseason so far, earning two quarterback pressures (including a sack) and two tackles (including a defensive stop) on 30 snaps. One final solid preseason performance against the Cleveland Browns on August 26 could lock Shelton’s roster spot in Kansas City.

Chiefs DT Danny Shelton appreciates competition on defensive line

The battles for the Kansas City Chiefs’ final roster spots will be displayed this weekend as the team suits up for their last preseason game. The absence of all-pro defensive lineman Chris Jones has forced the defense to use various combinations up front, and the preseason finale could answer many questions moving forward.

Chiefs defensive tackle Danny Shelton was a former first-round selection who has bounced around the league since 2015. He played on the New England Patriots’ 2018 Super Bowl championship team and understood the importance of a motivated defensive unit. He spoke with reporters following Monday’s practice about the energy of the Chiefs’ defensive line.

“I just felt great being out there. Running with the guys. You know, we had a great group of guys, young guys, everybody’s competitive,” Shelton said. “I was telling Coach Cullen during training camp, I was impressed with just how everybody came prepared during training camp and just upped the competition level. So being out there, it was fun to compete with everybody.”

Shelton was on the Chiefs practice squad last season and hopes to be on the main roster this year. He wants to contribute on the field for a Super Bowl title.

Two Chiefs defensive linemen celebrated birthdays on Sunday

Two #Chiefs defensive linemen celebrated birthdays on Sunday after Kansas City’s win against the #Cardinals.

The Kansas City Chiefs defensive line has been the subject of endless speculation amid Chris Jones’ holdout through the preseason. The unit has been tested through two exhibition matchups against the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals, and showed serious improvement in Saturday’s win at State Farm Stadium.

Two of Kansas City’s defensive linemen, Danny Shelton and Charles Omenihu, celebrated birthdays on Sunday after the Chiefs’ preseason Week 2 victory, turning 30 and 26, respectively.

Shelton is a former first-round pick who won a Super Bowl ring as a member of Kansas City’s roster back in February.

Omenihu joined the Chiefs as a free agent in the offseason but will be suspended for Kansas City’s first six regular-season games because of a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Both figure to be key parts of the Chiefs’ defensive strategy this season, and with another year under their belts will bring their depth of experience to Kansas City’s up-and-coming front four.

7 Chiefs we want to see more from against the Cardinals on Saturday

We want to see more from these seven #Chiefs players in Kansas City’s next preseason matchup against the #Cardinals.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday was disappointing, but Andy Reid and company will get their chance to redeem themselves on Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2 of the preseason. Several Chiefs made their mark in Week 1, but others were overshadowed by the performances of players like Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio, and Chamarri Conner.

With just two games remaining to earn their spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster, several prospects will need to redouble their efforts against Arizona this weekend.

Here are seven Chiefs we want to see more from when Kansas City travels to the desert on Saturday:

8 biggest winners from Chiefs preseason Week 1 matchup vs. Saints

Not all was lost in the #Chiefs’ heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the #Saints on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs saw victory slip out of their hands in the final minute of their preseason Week 1 matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but not all was lost. They saw several standout performances from underrated members of their roster on both sides of the ball, and several players came out of the matchup with a better chance to make Kansas City’s 53-man roster in September.

Check out the 10 biggest winners of the Chiefs’ preseason loss to the Saints:

10 Chiefs with the most to prove in Kansas City’s preseason matchup vs. Saints

These 10 #Chiefs have the most to prove in Kansas City’s preseason kickoff against the #Saints on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs intend to defend their Super Bowl LVII title in 2023 and are in the process of determining which players belong on their 53-man roster ahead of the new season. Preseason exhibitions are an ideal time for younger athletes to make their case for a spot on the team, and several Chiefs will have something to prove ahead of Kansas City’s kickoff on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Guys like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Creed Humphrey, and L’Jarius Sneed have nothing to fear heading into the highly anticipated preseason matchup, but others will be fighting for their jobs in the Big Easy. Expectations are high for the Chiefs, and they can’t afford to keep anyone who hasn’t proven to be the best of the best if they want to win a second straight championship.

Here are 10 players who have the most to prove in Kansas City’s tilt against New Orleans on Sunday:

The Kansas City Chiefs face sky-high expectations ahead of the 2023 regular season, and preparations for their championship defense campaign have already begun in earnest at their training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. While the Chiefs’ up-and-coming receiving corps has been the object of intense adulation at Missouri Western State University, players in other position groups are still trying to break through to secure themselves a spot on Kansas City’s final 53-man roster.
