Chiefs DT Danny Shelton cut weight, feels ‘great’

Danny Shelton lost some weight in the offseason, and feels ‘great’ heading into the 2023 season.

Battling for a spot on the 53-man roster, Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Danny Shelton made a small change that could go a long way in helping his on-field performance.

The 30-year-old lineman, who is listed around 6-foot-2 and 345 pounds, shed a bit of weight, improving the way he moves and feels.

“This time last year I was probably like upper (3)50s,” Shelton said during Monday’s press conference. “Right now I’m about 12 pounds under. I used to use intermittent fasting but then I got stuck, it wasn’t working anymore. I did carb cycling in March in OTAs and it worked like magic for me. (My) energy has been great, feel great, joints feel great and everything.”

It may not seem like much, but cutting even five or 10 pounds can make a big difference for a normal person, let alone someone who plays a sport that favors those with speed. And Shelton, who was on the Chiefs’ roster last year but only played in one game, needs every bit of an advantage he can get to make his way back onto the team’s 53-man roster when cut day arrives on August 29.

Shelton has had a very good preseason so far, earning two quarterback pressures (including a sack) and two tackles (including a defensive stop) on 30 snaps. One final solid preseason performance against the Cleveland Browns on August 26 could lock Shelton’s roster spot in Kansas City.

Andy Reid says hot practices prep Chiefs for scorching preseason Week 3

Andy Reid is using the sweltering weather to help condition the #Chiefs for their preseason finale.

The Kansas City area has seen record-high temperatures over the past week, making way for brutal practices for the Chiefs.

Luckily, those scorching-hot practices, which will be in the 100s all week this week, help the team actually prepare for upcoming hot games at the end of preseason and in early September to start the regular season.

“These next couple of days I think are probably going to take care of that,” coach Andy Reid said about preparing for upcoming hot games. “I think it cools down just a little bit, I think you’re looking at 89 (degrees) or something like that. It’ll be warm, we’ll just keep our rotation going.

“We’re going to have that (heat) in Jacksonville and possibly our night game against the Lions, but Jacksonville is a noon game, so we got to be ready for a hot one there too.”

An unfortunate side effect of playing outdoors in the Midwest is that the Chiefs see both sides of extreme weather throughout the year. Luckily, the extreme heat doesn’t last too long – after that Week 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars that Reid mentioned, it’ll be smooth sailing in terms of playing in blazing temps.

Then, it’ll be no time before the cold games arrive, and then possibly snow games – those Green Bay and New England games in December are tracking to be really chilly. Luckily, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes considers himself a “snow-game guy.”

Packers sitting 25 players, including Christian Watson, in preseason finale vs. Chiefs

QB Aaron Rodgers and rookie WR Christian Watson are among the 25 players sitting out the Packers’ preseason opener against the Chiefs.

While the entire suited up and warmed up Thursday night, the Green Bay Packers are sitting 25 players – including quarterback Aaron Rodgers – in the preseason final against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Coach Matt LaFleur determined earlier this week that his important veteran starters wouldn’t play. The reasoning: It’s a long season, and no team can afford to have a major injury in a game that doesn’t count in the standings.

Rookie Christian Watson, who returned to 11-on-11 work this week in practice, won’t play. He will miss all three preseason games after having knee surgery in June.

Here are the 25 players sitting out Thursday night:

S Dallin Leavitt (injury)
WR Christian Watson
WR Sammy Watkins
QB Aaron Rodgers
WR Allen Lazard
