Chiefs DL Danny Shelton wants to recreate iconic ‘Bloated Tebow’ play

#Chiefs DL Danny Shelton is keen to re-create one of Kansas City’s most iconic plays of the Andy Reid era in 2023.

Though the end of the preseason may doom his wishes to go unfulfilled, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Danny Shelton wants to re-create an iconic play from the team’s history during the 2023 season.

The appropriately named “Bloated Tebow” pass was a play designed for defensive tackle Dontari Poe back in 2016 where the lineman took a snap from shotgun on the goal line and threw the ball to former Chiefs tight end Demetrius Harris for a touchdown.

When a fan on Twitter tagged Shelton in a post and asked for the play to be featured this season, the former first-round pick made it clear that passes like these are in his wheelhouse.

“Always wanted to do this,” Shelton wrote. “Gotta check it off my bucket list.”

Shelton may get his chance to revive this spectacular play in 2023 if Kansas City jumps out to a big lead against another divisional opponent at some point during their Super Bowl defense campaign.

Saints trying out free agent tight ends Demetrius Harris, Josh Pederson

Saints free agent tryouts to include tight ends Demetrius Harris and Josh Pederson following Ethan Wolf injury:

There’s a ton of hype building for Adam Trautman at New Orleans Saints training camp, but the rest of the tight ends depth chart is starting to look a little shaky. Backup Ethan Wolf, who took former draft pick Tommy Stevens’ spot on the practice squad last season, is expected to miss a week a more with an ankle injury, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Veteran pickup Nick Vannett was signed to help replace Josh Hill as the co-starter with Trautman (stepping in for Jared Cook), but he’s missed a few practice sessions without explanation. That leaves New Orleans with just three healthy tight ends available.

NJ.com’s Mike Kaye reports that former Louisiana-Monroe tight end Josh Pederson is one player visiting for a workout; the son of ex-Eagles coach Doug Pederson fits the athletic profile at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, with enough college production (99 receptions for 1,191 receiving yards and 11 touchdown catches) to move the needle. Maybe he sticks around if his workout goes well.

But SportsTalk790’s Aaron Wilson adds that Pederson faces tough competition in Demetrius Harris, an experienced pro with 108 games (11 of them in the playoffs) behind him. He tips the scales at 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds and has made a career as a blocker, with just 83 receptions for 833 yards and 9 touchdowns in his NFL career. He’s previously played for the Chiefs, Browns, and Bears.

Of course other players could be in town for this same workout session. Maybe the Saints choose to not sign any of them and instead rely on Trautman, Garrett Griffin, and Juwan Johnson among the other options on the roster. But if Wolf and Vannett aren’t able to return soon, it’s possible changes are on the way. Stay tuned for updates.

Bears inactives: Which players won’t play vs. Jaguars in Week 16?

Here’s a look at the players that won’t be suiting up for the Bears when they face the Jaguars on Sunday.

The Chicago Bears released their list of inactives ahead of today’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and there’s both good and bad news for the Bears.

Chicago will once again be without rookie cornerback Jaylon Johnson (shoulder) and cornerback Buster Skrine (concussion). But the good news is that a slew of Bears players that were questionable — including outside linebacker Khalil Mack, defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, receiver Allen Robinson and running back Cordarrelle Patterson are all active.

Here’s a look at the players that won’t be suiting up for the Bears:

Bears TE Demetrius Harris downgraded to out vs. Jaguars

The Bears have a laundry list of injuries heading into Sunday’s game against the Jaguars, and they’ll also be without TE Demetrius Harris.

The Chicago Bears have a laundry list of injuries heading into Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chicago will already be without cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Buster Skrine, and there are a handful of others questionable for the Week 16 game.

Bears tight end Demetrius Harris has been downgraded from doubtful to out for Sunday, as he’s nursing a foot injury.

Harris has played sparingly since the beginning of this season, as rookie tight end Cole Kmet has become a bigger part of Chicago’s offense. It hasn’t helped that Harris has struggled with some drops in the passing game earlier this year.

Former Bears TE Trey Burton suffered calf injury at Colts practice

Former Bears TE Trey Burton hit another injury snag during Saturday’s Colts practice, where he appeared to injure his left calf.

[jwplayer 2x51nG5k-ThvAeFxT]

Former Bears tight end Trey Burton had his share of injury struggles during his two seasons in Chicago. Whether it was the groin injury that held him out of the NFC Wild Card game during 2018 or landing on injured reserve last season with a calf injury, Burton couldn’t stay on the field.

The Bears released Burton this offseason, and he was soon scooped up by the Indianapolis Colts, where he would get another opportunity to prove himself.

Unfortunately for Burton, his bad luck has followed him to Indianapolis. Burton suffered an injury during Saturday’s practice, where he had to be helped off the field. According to Dov Kleiman, Burton couldn’t put weight on his left foot after sustaining the injury.

According to Indy Star’s Joel Erickson, Burton suffered a strained or pulled muscle in his left calf.

In 2018, Chicago signed Burton to a four-year, $32 million contract, which included $22 million guaranteed. While Burton had a career-best season with the Bears in 2018 — 54 catches for 569 receiving yards and six touchdowns — it was ultimately his lack of availability that was his downfall.

Meanwhile in Chicago, there have been rave reviews about the Bears’ new crop of tight ends, including rookie Cole Kmet and veterans Jimmy Graham and Demetrius Harris. Whoever does win the starting quarterback job between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles will have some big targets to throw to.

5 takeaways from Bears’ Friday training camp practice

While the Bears didn’t practice in pads on Friday, it was still an eventful practice with battles continuing at quarterback and safety.

It’s been a busy week of training camp practice for the Chicago Bears this week. While the Bears didn’t practice in pads on Friday, it was still an eventful practice, especially as the quarterback derby between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles continues.

We heard from Bears safeties Tashaun Gipson and Deon Bush, who are both competing for that vacant starting job. There were also some notable injuries during this fourth open practice, some minor and another season-ending.

Here are five takeaways from Chicago’s practice on Friday:

1. Mitchell Trubisky continues to impress more than Nick Foles

Jose M. Osorio/ Chicago Tribune via AP, Pool

While it’s early, there’s a trend that’s been developing at these training camp practices with the quarterbacks. Trubisky put together a third straight solid practice, which has become the norm this week. Foles, who won Monday slightly, hasn’t been as impressive during these early practices.

Reports out of Friday’s practice were that Trubisky looked sharper, especially his accuracy. After a critical error on Thursday, where he ran out of bounds and took a sack, Trubisky threw the ball away in the same situation on Friday.

Foles hasn’t looked bad, but he hasn’t exactly impressed either. Foles and Trubisky have been praised for his decision making, but Foles didn’t match Trubisky’s accuracy in 7-on-7s on Friday. Although he was taking more chances down the field.

But it doesn’t mean anything at this point. It’s still early. We’re just three padded practices into this thing. Matt Nagy and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo have stressed the importance of situational football, which we haven’t heard too much about. But once the situational stuff cranks up, that’s when these practices are going to start mattering even more.
