The Boston Celtics will have as many as nine free agents in 2024

Finding the right balance between players the front office ought to want to retain without also paying too much to do so is a fraught needle to thread.

The Boston Celtics are officially a second apron ball club as they gear up to contend for an NBA-record 18th title this season, and will thus need to take great care with the talent on the team around the margins with the Celtics needing to keep good players on cheap contracts around, which is no easy task even without the additional exigencies of trying to win a title.

Finding the right balance between players the front office ought to want to retain without also paying too much to do so is a fraught needle to thread for Boston moving forward, but one they will need to pull off if they want to stay in the title hunt.

And they will have to do it a total of as many as nine times in the 2024 NBA offseason, with as many potential free agents looking at new deals; let’s take a look at who they are.

Boston’s Joe Mazzulla on why he benched Dalano Banton

Is this a sign of how Mazzulla will coach the team this season? Will Banton continue to stay focused on what the team needs from him?

Reserve Boston Celtics wing Dalano Banton‘s recent benching during a Celtics preseason game by Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla for failing to go after a loose ball fast enough for Mazzulla’s liking has sparked a discussion among fans and analysts.

The faux pas by Banton led to an animated reaction from Mazzulla as he pulled the Toronto native for a brief moment, with, to his credit, Banton returning to the floor soon after and responding to the coaching from Mazzula. He emphasized that strong defense and commitment to the game are non-negotiable.

Is this a sign of how Mazzulla will coach the team this season? Will Banton continue to stay focused on what the team needs from him?

Boston rolls out its bench in preseason loss to the New York Knicks

Dalano Banton, despite some struggles with efficiency from deep, showed promise as a ball handler and on the defensive end.

The Boston Celtics rolled out their bench players in a preseason loss to the New York Knicks on Monday night, and several Boston players made strong impressions in their preseason play for the team. Payton Pritchard in particular stood out with his scoring and playmaking, scoring 15 points, grabbing 3 rebounds, and dished out 1 assist.

Dalano Banton, despite some struggles with efficiency from deep, showed promise as a ball handler and on the defensive end. Lamar Stevens played with intensity, contributing 11 points and 8 boards, though he needs to improve his 3-point shooting. Neemias Queta, a Portuguese player on a two way deal, made his debut, showcasing his size and rebounding ability, and tendency to foul too much.

To hear a finer-grained analysis of the second of the Celtics’ 2023 preseason tilts, take a look at the clip embedded below from the folks at CLNS Media’s “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast.

Boston’s Dalano Banton relished his preseason opportunity vs the New York Knicks

It may have only been a preseason game, but Dalano Banton’s 20-point game for the Boston Celtics in their 114-107 exhibition loss to the New York Knicks was something of a statement game for the new Boston wing.

It may have only been a preseason game, but Dalano Banton‘s 20-point game for the Boston Celtics in their 114-107 exhibition loss to the New York Knicks was something of a statement game for the new Boston wing. Speaking after the game via CLNS Media, Banton said that his play for the Celtics “definitely felt good for all of us down the whole line of the team.”

“The guys who’ve been here, they had a long run into the playoffs last year, and … (have) been here early working throughout the whole offseason,” he added. “It’s good for that second unit and the guys who never got in yesterday in last night’s game (vs. the Philadelphia 76ers).”

“It’s good for all of us to get that confidence up going into the season,” shared Banton.

The Toronto native did not appear to lack confidence at all for his part, having shot a solid 8-of-19 from the field and was perhaps a bit too confident from beyond the arc after hitting just 1 of 5 attempts.

While there are elements to his game he still needs to clean up to earn a regular role with the team, Banton looked like a considerably more complete player Monday night than he did in Boston’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League earlier in the offseason.

Ranking season is here, and so is power ranking the Celtics’ roster for next season.

Each NBA offseason, the news cycle tends to dry up as the month of September approaches, with the league’s analysts turning to projecting the order of the league, its players, and even the internal rosters themselves in the yearly exercise we call Ranking Season.

Let’s see where Buckley rates each member of the team vs. their peers — but you’ll have to check his analysis for the thinking behind them.

Boston’s Dalano Banton on making the leap from the Raptors to the Celtics

“He just wanted an opportunity to grow and just be himself,” said teammate Justin Champagnie.

New Boston Celtics reserve point guard Dalano Banton opened up about joining the Celtics’ roster after starting his career with the Toronto Raptors in an article by the Hamilton Spectator’s Libaan Osman.

“Shoutout to the (Raptors’) front office, I feel like that organization alone made me the person that I am, made me the kid from Rexdale,” Banton said.

“I owe them a lot. I’m very thankful for them, very thankful for Masai (Ujiri). I made that really clear to them and other people on the staff when I made the choice to go somewhere else,” he added.

“He just wanted an opportunity to grow and just be himself,” offered former Toronto and now Boston teammate Justin Champagnie. “He took what was on the table for him, and he wanted to make the best out of it.”

“Dalano’s got a chance to be a good player,” suggested Celtics president Brad Stevens. “He’s got a great feel for the game. He’s obviously gotta get a little bit stronger, he’s got to get his shot a little bit better, but those are things that can happen over time.”
