College Football Power Rankings: Tennessee and TCU move up, Syracuse and Wake Forest slide

Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, and Syracuse fall after disappointing losses in Week 9. But who’s on the rise? Here are this week’s College Football Power rankings. From @john9williams

Week 9 of the college football season provided some fantastic action and stunning blowouts in top 25 action.

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions played a fantastic game. The two teams scored 41 points in a frenetic fourth quarter and the Buckeyes stayed undefeated. Rival Michigan held on against Michigan State.

Elsewhere in the top four, the Tennessee Volunteers dismantled the Kentucky Wildcats, 44-6, and Georgia continued its dominance with a 42-20 win over Florida.

In the only other game featuring two top 25 teams, the Kansas State Wildcats blanked Oklahoma State, 48-0. Several upsets occurred: Wake Forest fell to Louisville, and Syracuse was blown out by Notre Dame.

With another fantastic week of college football action, how did this week’s power rankings shake out?

Trojans fall, down goes Bama: College Football Power Rankings after a wild week 7

College Football Power Rankings after a week 7 that featured three teams in the top 10 falling and eight in the top 25.

What a wonderful sport we follow. With several marquee matchups on the docket for week seven, including three games featuring undefeated teams, Saturday promised to be a fantastic day for college football.

It lived up to the hype.

Tennessee and Alabama played a barn burner, with the Volunteers coming out on top 52-49, and the TCU Horned Frogs came back to win in double overtime over the Oklahoma State Cowboys after being down 30-16 at halftime.

USC dropped its first game of the season in a thriller with Utah. Led by Cam Rising, the Utes scored late and opted to go for two and the win instead of kicking an extra point.

In all, four teams inside the top ten of last week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll lost, and eight in the top 25.

College Football News’ Week 6 Big Ten Power Rankings

How does College Football News rank every team in the Big Ten following Week 5 action and heading into Week 6?

Another week has come and gone. The first full slate of Big Ten play saw No. 3 Ohio State rout Rutgers, 49-10, No. 4 Michigan swat away any upset ideas from Iowa in Kinnick, 27-14, and No. 10 Penn State downed Northwestern, 17-7.

Elsewhere, Purdue shocked then-No. 23 Minnesota, 20-10, Maryland kept the Michigan State blues rolling, 27-13, and Nebraska finally picked up a win over Indiana, 35-21. Finally, Wisconsin‘s Paul Chryst got the axe following the Badgers’ embarrassing 34-10 home loss to the Hawkeyes’ next opponent, Illinois.

Now, only Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State still have sparkling marks of perfection, though Maryland, Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois are all receiving votes in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Ohio State running back Miyan Williams earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors after rushing for a career-high 189 yards and tied 38- and 48-year old school records with five rushing touchdowns in the Buckeyes’ runaway win in Piscataway, N.J.

Defensively, Purdue’s Cam Allen nabbed Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week recognition following a two-interception performance against Minnesota that helped spearhead the Boilermakers’ upset win in the Twin Cities. It’s the second Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolade in his career and the first for Purdue since Jalen Graham was honored on Nov. 1, 2021.

Penn State punter Barney Amor punted five times for 200 yards and had four punts land inside the 20-yard line and three downed inside the 10-yard line. Finally, Nebraska cornerback Malcolm Hartzog returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to give Nebraska a 14-7 lead over Indiana to pick up Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. It represented the Huskers’ first blocked punt return touchdown since 2009 and the Huskers’ first special teams touchdown since 2019.

After all of the Week 5 results, there’s heroes aplenty and jockeying in the rankings. The latest Big Ten Power Rankings courtesy of College Football News look like this.

ESPN CFB analyst includes 5 SEC teams in his top 10

ESPN college football analyst Peter Burns ranks five SEC teams in the top 10. Where is UGA and Alabama?

ESPN college football analyst and SEC Network host Peter Burns ranks five SEC teams in the top 10. A lot of college football fans won’t like Burns’ rankings, but remember that several of Burns’ top 10 teams play each other, so it is unlikely this many SEC teams will be able to stay in the top 10 for long.

The Georgia Bulldogs are looking worthy of the No. 1 ranking after Alabama’s disappointing opening game against a Power Five opponent. The Crimson Tide struggled at Texas, but were able to get a big win.

Who is left out of Burns’ rankings? No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Michigan State, No. 12 NC State, No. 13 Miami, and No. 14 BYU all have strong cases to be ranked in the top 10 (these rankings are per the USATODAY Coaches’ Poll).

Here is how ESPN’s Peter Burns ranks his top 10 college football teams:

Full worst-to-first preseason SP+ conference power rankings

Where does the Big Ten stand nationally in comparison to all other conferences in ESPN’s final SP+ preseason projections?

The Big Ten is generally regarded as one of the nation’s premier conferences. It makes perfect sense, too. In addition to boasting some of the country’s top brands, the actual football being played on the gridiron is pretty dang good as well.

In fact, ESPN’s final SP+ preseason projections rank five Big Ten teams inside the nation’s top 17 and eight teams inside the country’s top 34. Iowa checks in No. 27 nationally according to the final SP+ ratings. Suffice it to say, the predictive model expects the league to feature plenty of the nation’s top teams once more in 2022.

On the surface, those numbers sound great for the Big Ten. How does the Big Ten stack up nationally, though? Where do all of the conferences rank according to Bill Connelly’s final SP+ preseason projections?

Here’s a worst-to-first breakdown of where each conference stands in terms of overall strength per ESPN’s final SP+ rankings.
