Oklahoma Sooners drop in College Sports Wire’s Big 12 Power Rankings

The Sooners took a dip in the latest Big 12 power rankings from College Sports Wire.

Last week was a rough one for the Oklahoma Sooners. They had an opportunity to really make a statement to kick off the final stretch of the regular season, but couldn’t put together good enough performances against Baylor or Kansas.

Last week was just the dip in what’s been a roller coaster ride in Big 12 play. Now sitting at 6-7, the stretch doesn’t get easier as they prepare to face Oklahoma State in Stillwater, No. 6 Iowa State, No. 2 Houston, Cincinnati, and then close the season at Texas.

They’re still very much in the mix for an NCAA tournament berth, but they’ve taken a step back in College Sports Wire’s latest Big 12 power rankings.

The Sooners were coming off two wins before suffering back-to-back double-digit losses to ranked opponents last week. Baylor and Kansas were able to take care of business that will likely send OU out of the top 25 in the coaches poll this week. – Patrick Conn, College Sports Wire

It’s unlikely the shorthanded Sooners will find their way back into the Coaches Poll or the AP top 25 with the stretch they have left. However, the difficult stretch that’s coming will be what gets them into the NCAA tournament field.

Texas secures top spot in Big 12 Power Rankings after final week of the regular season

How does the Big 12 stack up after the final week of the regular season? Here are this week’s power rankings.

The 2023 college football season has been a thrill ride from start to finish. In its lone season as a 14-team conference, the Big 12 did not disappoint. There were fantastic games throughout the conference schedule that brought us to a dramatic final weekend of the regular season.

The Sooners will look back on this season, knowing they missed an opportunity to reach the Big 12 title game. Their performances against Kansas and Oklahoma State were the difference. And although there was some officiating negligence in the loss to the Cowboys, the Sooners also gave the ball away three times in the loss in Bedlam. Combined, the Sooners turned the ball over six times in their two losses and just seven times total in their other 10 games.

Take care of the football and the Sooners are playing for the Big 12 title this weekend.

Week 13 provided a thrilling overtime game between Oklahoma State and BYU. Iowa State and Kansas State played down to the wire in a wintery Farmageddon. Texas beat Texas Tech by 50 with Brett Yormark in attendance, and West Virginia made good on their promise to the preseason media poll look foolish.

After the final week of the regular season, let’s take a look at this week’s Big 12 Power Rankings.

With just one week remaining in the regular season, how doe the Big 12 power rankings look after Week 12 action?

Here’s a look at the Big 12 Power Rankings ahead of the final week of the regular season.

Big 12 Power Rankings: Cowboys dropped by Knights, Sooners make a statement in week 11

Oklahoma’s win over West Virginia and Oklahoma State’s loss to UCF shook up this week’s Big 12 power rankings.

There are just two weeks left in the regular season, and there’s still a lot to sort out. Texas and Oklahoma State currently hold the top two spots in the Big 12 standings, but Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Iowa State are lurking.

There’s no time for anyone to slip up like Oklahoma State did this past weekend in Orlando.

The UCF Knights’ dominating 45-3 win over the Cowboys was shocking after Oklahoma State knocked off Oklahoma in Bedlam.

As for the Sooners, they responded to their two-game losing streak with authority, putting together arguably their best game of the season in their 59-20 win over West Virginia.

In the win, the Sooners looked like one of the best teams in the Big 12. That combined with the Cowboys’ loss, there’s been a shakeup in this week’s Big 12 power rankings.

Big 12 power rankings after critical games in Austin and Stillwater

Texas’ Big 12 title chances increased on Saturday.

The Big 12 title race is down to the final lap as a handful of teams vie for one of two spots in the title game. Two teams emerged as favorites on Saturday.

We’ll start with Oklahoma State, perhaps the biggest surprise of the season. The Cowboys started the season 2-2 with a 33-7 home loss to South Alabama and road loss to Iowa State. We might of wrote them off, but they didn’t quit.

Since those losses, the Cowboys are playing as well as anybody in the Big 12 conference. The Pokes secured wins over Kansas and Kansas State before knocking Oklahoma out of first place in the Big 12 this week.

We predicted an Oklahoma State victory over Oklahoma but not in the way the game unfolded. The Cowboys defense clamped down on the Oklahoma Sooners offense and won 27-24.

Let’s rank Big 12 teams heading into the final three games of the season.

Big 12 Power Rankings: Sooners loss to Jayhawks shakes up the top of the conference

Big 12 power rankings are a mess after the Kansas Jayhawks knock off the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Kansas Jayhawks upset win over the Oklahoma Sooners was their first since 1997 after an 18-game losing streak against OU. It showed off the strong direction their program is heading under Lance Leipold and added another team to the Big 12 title race mix.

While the Sooners are still in first place in the Big 12 due to tiebreakers, there are currently five teams with a 4-1 record in Big 12 play and two more teams (West Virginia and Kansas) that are one game back of first place at 3-2.

The depth of the Big 12 is starting to reveal itself as teams begin to beat up on each other. Week 9 provides a semifinals of sorts for the Big 12 title game with Kansas State traveling to Austin to take on Texas and Oklahoma State hosting the Sooners in Stillwater for Bedlam. The teams that come out of this weekend with a win will have the best shot to make the Big 12 title game.

Contender Edition: Longhorns Wire’s Big 12 Power Rankings for Week 10

We have a new No. 1 this week.

The Big 12 pecking order underwent a seismic shift on Saturday. Several teams updated how they should be perceived this season.

Kansas State had the most dominant performance of the week. Their 41-0 win over Houston should indicate how high their ceiling is as the season closes. That they face Texas as they are peaking this week should be reason for caution for the Longhorns.

The Oklahoma Sooners’ Week 10 opponent is playing its best football as well. The Oklahoma State Cowboys enter the week red-hot with recent wins over Kansas State and Kansas.

The two matchups could sort out our power rankings moving forward, but will have a greater effect on the conference standings. Five teams in the league have just one conference loss.

Let’s rank power rank legitimate conference contenders.

Big 12 football power rankings following Texas’ loss to Oklahoma

We have a new No. 1 atop our Big 12 power rankings.

The Oklahoma Sooners (6-0) dismantled the Texas Longhorns (5-1) in the Cotton Bowl. Texas is no longer in the top spot in our Week 7 power rankings.

Oklahoma’s 34-30 win was nightmarish from the get-go. Sooners defensive back Gentry Williams, who has emerged as a true impact player for his team, intercepted Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers on the game’s second play. From there, save for a blocked punt for a touchdown, Oklahoma dominated the first quarter. It wasn’t the last period of dominance for the team.

The Sooners made nearly all the critical plays. It held Texas out of the end zone on four tries by the goal line. It prevented Texas from getting a first down with the game tied at 27 with just over a minute left. Finally, the Sooners drove down the field in five plays after being given the ball with 1:17 left.

While they possess a lower ceiling than the Longhorns, Oklahoma is maximizing its talent while Texas lags ever-so-slightly behind. The Sooners’ maximization helped them make the winning plays. They move up in our rankings.

Let’s look at how the rest of the Big 12 field ranks after a wild day of college football.

Big 12 Power Rankings: Sooners take top spot, upsets shuffle rankings after Week 6

Several upsets marked week 6 in the Big 12 and there’s a new No. 1 in this week’s Big 12 Power Rankings.

It was a wild week in the Big 12. The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns played an instant classic in the Cotton Bowl with the Sooners coming out on top.

Elsewhere, several games upset the apple cart in the conference. The two teams that represented the Big 12 in the title game a year ago, TCU and Kansas State suffered losses.

The Horned Frogs took their second loss in conference play and look to be sliding back to the pack after their loss to Iowa State. The Wildcats took a stunning loss to Oklahoma State on Friday night.

Here’s a look at how the league stacks up in this week’s Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 6.

Big 12 Power Rankings heading into the Red River Rivalry game

Texas and Oklahoma take the top spots in the power rankings, but West Virginia surges for Week 6.

The Big 12 has hasn’t displayed much power despite the two teams at the top of the league. One program looks to be capitalizing on that lack of power.

The West Virginia Mountaineers improved to 4-1 after defeating the TCU Horned Frogs (3-2) in Fort Worth on Saturday. The game puts the Mountaineers into the Big 12 title conversation which could be the surprise of the year in the conference.

TCU and Texas Tech continue to underwhelm, although the Red Raiders did secure a bounce-back win against Houston. It seems evident that neither team will compete for the conference contrary to what I predicted heading into the season.

Kansas State and Oklahoma State enjoyed the week off ahead of Friday’s game in Stillwater.

Let’s power rank the conference after five weeks of football.
