Former Laker Chaundee Brown signs with Hawks on 10-day deal

Former Los Angeles Lakers two-way player Chaundee Brown has a new home to make an impact.

The Atlanta Hawks Monday announced the signing of Chaundee Brown, who formerly played for the Los Angeles Lakers this season.

The contract is a 10-day deal via the hardship exemption because the Hawks are down personnel due to health and safety protocols.

Brown is an undrafted rookie out of Michigan who signed a training camp deal with the Lakers shortly after the 2021 NBA draft concluded. He impressed in the Summer League and preseason with his two-way potential but started the year off with the G League South Bay Lakers.

The Lakers eventually promoted him to a two-way deal, but he made only two appearances, both after health and safety protocols decimated the roster. Brown’s debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves went terribly as he shot 0-of-6 in 15 minutes. He played five minutes against the Chicago Bulls in the following contest and made his only attempt.

Brown’s stint with the Lakers ended there. Los Angeles released him to instead sign Mason Jones from South Bay on a two-way deal.

Lakers waive Chaundee Brown

The Los Angeles Lakers are waiving two-way rookie Chaundee Brown.

The Los Angeles Lakers waived Chaundee Brown, according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

Brown was recently promoted to a two-way spot after impressing in the G League, but his time in that slot has come to an end.

Brown played just two games for the Lakers. He appeared for 15 minutes against the Minnesota Timberwolves but missed all six of his shots. He played five minutes against the Chicago Bulls and made his only attempt.

However, either Brown or Jay Huff, the second two-way player, needed to be waived to make room for Mason Jones, who the Lakers just inked to a two-way deal.

Brown reacted to the news on Twitter:

Explaining the NBA’s hardship exception and the free agents who signed as replacement players

Explaining what hardship exceptions and replacement players mean as COVID-19 protocols hit the NBA.

As the omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to spread, the NBA has required a large share of “replacement players” to fill in for the players who are in health and safety protocols. And so far, more than 100 players have reportedly entered the league’s health and safety protocols so far this month, per ESPN’s Baxter Holmes.

But how exactly do the “replacement players” work?

Essentially, the NBA’s hardship exception allows teams to exceed the 15-man roster limit if more than three players on the roster are each going to miss extended time due to illness or injury. Typically, teams weren’t allowed to apply for the hardship exception before Jan. 5.

But starting last season, the league changed the policy to allow earlier exceptions. And as of earlier this week, effective Dec. 19 until Jan. 19, the NBA is allowing teams to sign one replacement player for each player on their roster who tests positive for COVID-19.

While there are some big names (e.g. Isaiah Thomas, Lance Stephenson, CJ Miles) who have signed as replacement players, there are lots of promising young NBA hopefuls who are hoping to use this opportunity as a chance to stick around the league.

Not all of the players below were signed through hardship exceptions and some transactions (e.g. DeMarcus Cousins and Wesley Matthews to the Milwaukee Bucks) may have happened anyway during a normal season.

But below, based on the NBA’s transaction log and reporting from the league’s top insiders, you can find a live tracker of all the players who have signed new deals with NBA teams over the course of the past month.

Lakers waiving Sekou Doumbouya; Chaundee Brown signed to two-way deal

The Los Angeles Lakers announced two roster moves Tuesday involving the team’s two-way spots.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced Tuesday Sekou Doumbouya’s two-way contract has been waived.

Los Angeles initially signed the 6-foot-8 forward towards the start of the regular season after waiving Joel Ayayi, the previous holder of one of two two-way spots.

Doumbouya, a former first-round pick in 2019, is currently rehabbing a foot injury, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

He appeared in two games this season, most notably dropping 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in the blowout loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Lakers will replace Doumbouya with Chaundee Brown. Brown signed with the team on an Exhibit 10 deal after going undrafted in 2021, and he impressed on both ends of the floor during Summer League and the preseason before being waived prior to the start of the regular season.

Brown then moved to the South Bay Lakers and was key in the team’s opening night win against the G League Ignite.

Jay Huff, a 7-foot-1 floor-spacing center, is the other two-way player.

Mac McClung, Chaundee Brown lead South Bay Lakers to win vs. G League Ignite

Mac McClung and Chaundee Brown had influential performances in the South Bay Lakers’ opener in the G League.

The South Bay Lakers kicked off the 2021-22 G League season with a win over the G League Ignite, 112-105.

South Bay trailed by 14 after the first quarter but climbed back into the game to earn a win. A 27-11 advantage in the final period was the difference for the Lakers.

Mac McClung and Chaundee Brown were at the heart of the win for the Lakers. McClung posted a game-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting to go with nine assists and six rebounds in 37 minutes. Brown added 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting along with 10 rebounds, four assists and a steal in 40 minutes.

McClung and Brown were two training camp signings for the Los Angeles Lakers over the summer as undrafted rookies; however, neither made the official roster.

South Bay next plays on Nov. 17 against the Ignite again.

Lakers to waive Joel Ayayi, Chaundee Brown, Trevelin Queen, Cam Oliver

The Los Angeles Lakers are waiving four players, including two-way player Joel Ayayi.

The Los Angeles Lakers Friday requested waivers on Joel Ayayi, Chaundee Brown, Trevelin Queen and Cam Oliver.

Out of the four, Ayayi is the biggest name since he previously occupied a two-way spot on the roster. Now the Lakers will need to replace his opening.

Brown, Queen and Oliver were all training camp players, so their releases were expected. Mac McClung and Frank Mason III are two other players who were on Exhibit 10 deals who got cut.

Head coach Frank Vogel said earlier in the preseason Brown was making a case for a two-way spot. Brown showed more than Ayayi, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the final spot.

L.A. recently inked Sekou Doumbouya to the other two-way opening.

3 Lakers who have stood out halfway through the preseason

These three Los Angeles Lakers have made their mark through the midway point of the preseason.

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially reached the halfway point of the preseason following the loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Los Angeles lost to the Brooklyn Nets in the preseason opener and to the Phoenix Suns in the second game.

LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis, the new big three, have been in and out of the lineup as Frank Vogel and the staff sort out rotations and balance rest before the regular season starts.

The rest allocated to those three stars has opened the doors for other players to get minutes and show how their skills could be optimized with the stars.

These three players have made good impressions so far:

Lakers’ Frank Vogel says Chaundee Brown is making a case for two-way spot

Chaundee Brown is turning heads for the last two-way spot on the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers had the second two-way spot on the roster open up following Austin Reaves’ promotion to the 14th man.

As Joel Ayayi possesses the other two-way spot, there’s a competition brewing among the players on training camp deals to fill the opening created after Reaves’ departure.

Chaundee Brown, Mac McClung, Cam Oliver and Trevelin Queen have had preseason run through the first two games, while four-year veteran Frank Mason was recently signed to a training camp deal.

Among that group, Brown has played the most minutes through two games, and head coach Frank Vogel likes what he sees.

“Yeah, he’s making a case,” Vogel said. “He’s performing well, obviously the perimeter shooting and the defensive physical toughness…he’s off to a good start for us.”

Vogel explained how Brown’s skill set has stood out thus far.

“He’s tough,” Vogel said. “He has the mindset of blowing up screens, being really physical on the glass, so he’s done a good job for us in camp and, like I said, you got a guy that can shoot the ball from the perimeter and make plays off the bounce and then compete at a high level on the defensive end, you got a chance.”

Against the Brooklyn Nets, Brown dropped 10 points (4-of-8 FG, 2-of-4 3P) in 13 minutes. Against the Phoenix Suns, he put up nine points (3-of-3 FG, 1-of-1 3P), three rebounds and one assist.

Listed at 6-foot-5, Brown is showing his 3-and-D skills at the wing, which is an area the Lakers could strengthen.

Oliver is second in minutes played, while McClung and Queen didn’t register any minutes against the Suns.

Frank Vogel explains how Lakers will use final two-way spot

Head coach Frank Vogel talked about what the Los Angeles Lakers will do with the second two-way roster spot.

With the preseason officially underway, the Los Angeles Lakers have multiple positional and roster battles in progress.

Players like Malik Monk, Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore and others are competing for the starting shooting guard spot.

Everyone not named LeBron James, Russell Westbrook or Anthony Davis are vying for the most minutes possible, whether they’re starting or coming off the bench.

But another competition happening is for the final two-way spot. After the Lakers promoted Austin Reaves to the 14th guaranteed roster spot, a new slot opened up.

Undrafted rookie Joel Ayayi is the other player. Head coach Frank Vogel explained who the Lakers are targeting and if someone already on the roster has a good chance.

“Yeah, and potentially someone that’s not with us right now,” Vogel said. “We’re going to see how the preseason plays out, see who all is available, both guys that are here or around the league, guys that might get cut, and we’ll make a decision closer to opening night.”

Chaundee Brown, Mac McClung, Cam Oliver and Trevelin Queen are the four prospects currently on Exhibit-10 training camp deals, so it’s possible one of those four make the cut.

Brown and McClung were immediate grabs after the 2021 NBA draft concluded, but it’ll be interesting to see who L.A. has eyes on outside of their current group.
