Chase Lucas, Michael Badgley among early Lions practice squad signings

The Lions practice squad is taking shape, starting with CB Chase Lucas and the return of K Michael Badgley

News and reports of the players signing to the Detroit Lions practice squad are starting to come in after the NFL’s waiver wire processing announcement. Two of the early names for the Lions practice squad are interesting ones.

Cornerback Chase Lucas is back after being waived. Lucas was a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft and showed considerable improvement and more positional versatility in his second training camp. He lost out in a numbers game in the Lions’ suddenly deep secondary.

The other name is a curious choice. Kicker Michael Badgley returns to Detroit on the practice squad. Cut by the Lions in late July, Badgley was subsequently signed — and then released — by Washington and Tennessee. He’s back where he was the Lions’ primary kicker in 2022, now behind Riley Patterson.

The Lions also signed undrafted rookie OT Connor Galvin back to the practice squad.

Chase Lucas, Dylan Drummond among latest Lions roster cutdowns

The Detroit Lions continue to make roster cuts ahead of the deadline, waiving Chase Lucas and Dylan Drummond in the latest round

With the roster cutdown deadline approaching on Tuesday, Lions GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell continue to make moves to get the active roster down to 53 players. The latest round of reported cuts on Monday includes a couple of players who many projected to make the final 53.

Among the notables reportedly waived on Monday are CB Chase Lucas and WR Dylan Drummond.

Lucas played well in the preseason, but it wasn’t enough to save the second-year cornerback. Detroit’s seventh-round pick in 2022 out of Arizona State is expected to return on the practice squad.

The same is true of Drummond, an undrafted rookie from Eastern Michigan who was one of the team’s top receivers in the preseason with nine receptions. His route running and ability to make catches away from his body stood out for Drummond.

Detroit is also axing three offensive linemen, per Dave Birkett of the Free Press. Undrafted rookie tackles Connor Galvin and Ryan Swoboda are both being waived, as is guard Kayode Awosika. As Birkett notes, those moves will leave the Lions with just eight offensive linemen on the initial 53-man roster after also releasing vets Bobby Hart and Germain Ifedi earlier.

Detroit is also waiving undrafted rookie QB Adrian Martinez, who got scant playing time in the last couple of weeks of camp and preseason.

Those moves would leave the Lions with 69 players left, meaning 13 more need to be cleared by 4 p.m. on Wednesday. One of those will be injured QB Nate Sudfeld, though how exactly he’s handled remains up in the air.

Quick takeaways from the Lions preseason win vs. the Panthers

Quick takeaways from the Detroit Lions preseason win vs. the Carolina Panthers

The Detroit Lions put a pretty bow on the preseason with a convincing 26-17 win in Carolina over the Panthers on Friday night. The Lions prevailed despite sitting all their starters and going against much of the Panthers’ first-team offense and defense in the first half of the game.

With the on-field temp well over 100 degrees, the Lions reserves brought the heat to their hosts. It was a standout game for several players and a nice rebound from an underwhelming effort and outcome in the prior preseason game.

Here’s what stood out from the game in watching it in real-time.

Lions vs Giants: Best and worst PFF grades from Detroit’s preseason win

Here are the standout performances from this week’s best and worst PFF performers for the Detroit Lions against the New York Giants.

The Detroit Lions kicked off their season with a 21-16 victory over the New York Giants in their first preseason game. Despite many of the team’s key players sitting out, the Lions’ management was able to evaluate potential roster candidates.

The game started off slowly, with the offense struggling, but the defense saved the day by repeatedly stepping up to the challenge and shutting down their opponents. Although some areas showed promise, others may require further evaluation by the Lions’ management.

Here are the standout performances from this week’s best and worst Pro Footbal Focus (PFF) performers, highlighting those who impressed and those who fell short in their bid for a coveted roster spot.

10 Lions to watch closely in the preseason opener vs. the Giants

It’s going to be a big night for several Lions, including these 10 Detroit players

The Detroit Lions host the New York Giants in the 2023 preseason opener for both teams. After two days of joint practices in Allen Park, the teams take their action to Ford Field for the kickoff of exhibition season.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell refused to indicate if the regular, established starters would play. Even if they do, it’s almost certainly on a very limited basis; the preseason isn’t about the starters.

It’s about the reserves and the position battles and the rookies getting their first taste of NFL action. Here are 10 Lions who wear at least one of those hats who will be important players to focus upon against the Giants.

Lions training camp notebook for August 5th: Situational game practice

News and notes from Detroit Lions practice on Aug. 5th from Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon

An enthusiastic capacity crowd at the team’s training facility in Allen Park watched the Detroit Lions plow through another day of camp practice.

The session started in full pads before the players shed them for a more focused play/scheme install for the second half of the practice. Fans got to see some individual matchup drills before a lengthy team session focused on installing some sets and plays.

Here’s what I observed in the Lions’ 11th training camp practice of the 2023 offseason.

Lions reveal free agent jersey numbers and veteran number changes

A bunch of Lions players changed their numbers now that different jerseys were available

When the Detroit Lions take to the field for the first mandatory minicamp in a few weeks, we’ll get a chance to see the free agents signed this offseason in their new jerseys for the first time. Now we know which number each of the new Lions will be sporting in 2023, at least to start the offseason.

The Lions revealed the jersey number choices of the free agent class of 2023. It was included in the same social media postings as the rookie jersey number assignments.

For the first time in the modern era, a Lions player will don No. 0. That honor goes to veteran wideout Marvin Jones, who returned in free agency after two seasons in Jacksonville.

The liberation of number assignments allows several new defensive backs to rock single-digit jerseys. Cam Sutton will wear No. 1, with C.J. Gardner-Johnson going for No. 2 and Emmanuel Moseley choosing the No 4 jersey. Running back David Montgomery will go with No. 5.

In addition to the new free agents, several holdover Lions pulled off some jersey number changes, too. Most notable among these are DB Ifeatu Melifonwu moving to No. 6 from 26 and running back Craig Reynolds choosing No. 13 after being No. 46.

That 24 belongs to cornerback Jarren Williams, not to be confused with wideout Jameson Williams, who appears to be keeping his No. 9.

Rookie CB Chase Lucas designated to return from I.R.

Lions rookie CB Chase Lucas was designated to return from I.R.

Even though the regular season ends in just four days, the Detroit Lions are leaving open the possibility for more reinforcements to come back to the team. On Wednesday, the Lions welcomed rookie cornerback Chase Lucas back to practice.

Lucas had his status shifted to designated to return from injured reserve, which allows the rookie from Arizona State to work with the team. The Lions have 21 days to either activate Lucas or place him on season-ending injured reserve. Lucas was initially placed on I.R. on December 10th with a hamstring injury.

The Lions are still very much alive in the NFC postseason race, so designating Lucas for return is a nod to allow him to keep practicing with the team and gain more experience if Detroit does make the playoffs. Lucas played just six snaps on defense in three games, though he was a special teams stalwart in six full games.

Lions sign C Ross Pierschbacher, place CB Chase Lucas on IR in series of roster moves

The Lions were busy making roster moves in advance of Sunday’s game against the Vikings

Saturday was a busy one in Allen Park as the Detroit Lions prepare for the Week 14 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions made a series of roster moves related to injuries that have hit the team recently.

The Lions signed center Ross Pierschbacher off the practice squad to the active roster. With reserve OL Kayode Awosika out and right guard Evan Brown doubtful with injuries, Pierschbacher provides some much-needed depth to the 53-man roster.

To make room for Pierschbacher, Detroit placed rookie CB Chase Lucas on injured reserve. Lucas suffered a hamstring injury during practice on Thursday and was quickly ruled out for Sunday’s game in Ford Field. The move to IR almost certainly ends Lucas’ rookie campaign. He played just six total defensive snaps in six games on the season.

The Lions also elevated LB Jarrad Davis and CB Jarren Williams from the practice squad. Davis helps replace injured Derrick Barnes, who will miss the game with a knee issue. Williams will provide needed depth at CB, where Lucas is now gone and starting slot CB Will Harris is out for the Vikings game.

Lions practice report: Ragnow back at full speed, Chase Lucas returns

Only one player, WR Josh Reynolds, was completely out with an injury

Thursday’s Detroit Lions practice participation report featured some pleasant news for once. The Lions are getting healthier as they approach the Week 10 matchup in Chicago with the Bears.

Only one player, wide receiver Josh Reynolds, was ruled out due to injury. Reynolds continues to be sidelined with a back issue that kept him out of Week 9 and limited his ability in the prior couple of games as well.

Rookie cornerback Chase Lucas practiced as a limited participant. It’s the first we’ve seen any action from Lucas in weeks. The seventh-round rookie has been out with an ankle injury.

Also trending up is center Frank Ragnow. No. 77 was limited on Wednesday but a full participant on Thursday with his foot injury. Safety Kerby Joseph was once again limited as he works through the concussion protocol. Fellow rookie Malcolm Rodriguez was also limited with an elbow injury the LB suffered in Sunday’s win over Green Bay.
