Eagles sign OL Brett Toth to the practice squad, release OL Ross Pierschbacher

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed OL Brett Toth to the practice squad and released OL Ross Pierschbacher

The Eagles made a practice squad swap on Thursday, releasing Ross Pierschbacher and bringing back Brett Toth ahead of Sunday’s matchup at the Cowboys.

Toth (6-6, 304 pounds) was signed off the Eagles’ practice squad in October by the Carolina Panthers and played in three games, starting one.

Toth was waived by the Panthers on Monday.

Toth played in 17 games (one start at right tackle) for the Eagles between the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He entered the league as a rookie free agent in 2019 after receiving a waiver to pursue his NFL career while serving in the Army.

Busy day for ex-Lions on the NFL’s transaction wire

Several ex-Lions appeared on Tuesday’s NFL transaction wire, from releases to tryouts

The NFL publishes a daily transaction report, one that runs the gamut between roster cuts, players being placed on reserve lists to those trying out for teams and everything in between. Tuesday’s transaction list was crowded with updates on former Detroit Lions players.

Foremost on the list is Trey Flowers. The New England Patriots released the defensive end from the team’s PUP list. Flowers has not played this season and managed just 65 snaps for the Miami Dolphins in 2022 after the Lions released him following the 2021 season.

One-time Lions OL Tommy Kraemer is back on the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Kraemer was signed from New Orleans’ practice squad to their active roster last week, then waived on Monday. He’s played seven offensive snaps in two games with the Saints.

Another former Lions offensive lineman, Obinna Eze, had his practice squad contract terminated by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Eze signed with Pittsburgh’s practice squad after Week 3 but was unable to stick.

There were a few ex-Lions hitting the tryout/workout circuit this week, too:

QB Jeff Driskel tried out for the Colts (Monday)

DT Bruce Hector also tried out for the Colts

K Austin Seibert tried out for the Raiders

OL Ross Pierschbacher tried out for the Cardinals

CB AJ Parker tried out for the Seahawks

DB Juju Hughes tried out for the Raiders

As of Wednesday morning, none of the players were signed.

Lions sign CB Colby Richardson, release injured OL Ross Pierschbacher

The Detroit Lions sign rookie CB Colby Richardson, release injured OL Ross Pierschbacher

The Detroit Lions were off from practice on Sunday, but the team still made a change to the roster. The Lions signed cornerback Colby Richardson to the 90-man roster.

Richardson is an undrafted rookie from LSU, where he transferred from McNeese State. He originally signed with the Carolina Panthers after the draft but was waived earlier this summer. The 25-year-old is a 6-foot-1 outside CB and will fill the roster void from the Lions waiving CB Tae Hayes on Saturday.

Richardson’s roster spot came available when the team released offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher with an injury settlement. Pierschbacher had been the team’s primary backup center. He suffered an injury in the preseason opener against the Giants and did not return.

Lions re-sign OL Ross Pierschbacher

Pierschbacher played 3 games for the Lions in 2022 after being promoted from the practice squad

It’s not a name that will move the needle for many Detroit fans, but the Lions have brought back their first free agent for the 2023 offseason.

Reserve offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher re-signed with the Lions on Wednesday. Terms are not yet officially disclosed, but it’s believed to be a one-year deal for the veteran lineman.

Pierchbacher played in three games for the Lions after initially being signed to the team’s practice squad. He only played on special teams. The 27-year-old can play any of the interior line positions after playing center in his college career at Alabama. He’s been with several NFL teams since being drafted in the fifth round by Washington back in 2019.

Lions sign C Ross Pierschbacher, place CB Chase Lucas on IR in series of roster moves

The Lions were busy making roster moves in advance of Sunday’s game against the Vikings

Saturday was a busy one in Allen Park as the Detroit Lions prepare for the Week 14 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions made a series of roster moves related to injuries that have hit the team recently.

The Lions signed center Ross Pierschbacher off the practice squad to the active roster. With reserve OL Kayode Awosika out and right guard Evan Brown doubtful with injuries, Pierschbacher provides some much-needed depth to the 53-man roster.

To make room for Pierschbacher, Detroit placed rookie CB Chase Lucas on injured reserve. Lucas suffered a hamstring injury during practice on Thursday and was quickly ruled out for Sunday’s game in Ford Field. The move to IR almost certainly ends Lucas’ rookie campaign. He played just six total defensive snaps in six games on the season.

The Lions also elevated LB Jarrad Davis and CB Jarren Williams from the practice squad. Davis helps replace injured Derrick Barnes, who will miss the game with a knee issue. Williams will provide needed depth at CB, where Lucas is now gone and starting slot CB Will Harris is out for the Vikings game.

Lions activate DE Romeo Okwara and place his brother Julian on IR

Lions activate DE Romeo Okwara from the PUP list and place his brother Julian on IR

There will be more than just first-round wideout Jameson Williams making a Detroit Lions debut in 2022 on Sunday. The Lions activated Williams on Saturday, but they also officially activated defensive end Romeo Okwara from the PUP list.

Okwara has not played since tearing his Achilles in Week 4 of the 2021 season. The Lions welcome back their 2020 sack leader in time for Okwara to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in Ford Field.

Alas, it’s not an entirely great day for the Okwara family. To make room for Romeo on the roster, the Lions placed his brother, Julian, on injured reserve. Julian Okwara hurt his elbow in the Week 12 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Lions also elevated center Ross Pierschbacher from the practice squad to help with the offensive line depth. Starting right guard Evan Brown, who is also the backup center, is out for the second week in a row with an ankle injury.

Lions elevate rookie DE James Houston, C Ross Pierschbacher from the practice squad

Both Houston and Pierschbacher could make their Lions debuts on Thanksgiving

The Detroit Lions elevated two players who have never taken a regular season snap in a Lions uniform. Both could see action in Thursday’s matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

Rookie DE James Houston and C Ross Pierschbacher were elevated on Wednesday to help flesh out the depth chart. Houston, the team’s sixth-round pick out of Jackson State, has spent all of his rookie season on the practice squad to this point. With both Josh Paschal and Charles Harris out with injury, Houston could at least see some activity on special teams.

Pierschbacher does technically have some NFL experience. He played exactly one snap for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. The Lions have major injury issues on the interior offensive line, including an ongoing foot and toe injury to center Frank Ragnow. That necessitates having someone who can play center in a pinch. Evan Brown, normally Ragnow’s backup, has been the team’s starting right guard, though Brown will miss this game with an ankle injury.

Updating the Detroit Lions offensive line options for Week 2

Sorting out all the possibilities for the Detroit Lions offensive line while dealing with injuries to Frank Ragnow and Jonah Jackson in Week 2

It’s only Week 2 but already the Detroit Lions are forced to test the limits of their offensive line depth. For a team that was projected to have one of the very best lines in the NFL with the presumptive starting five, it’s a huge blow.

Starting right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai went on injured reserve before Week 1 and has subsequently had back surgery. His top replacement, Tommy Kraemer, missed Week 1 with a back injury of his own. He’s now on IR too.

Now with the Washington Commanders and their talented defensive line on the schedule in Week 2, the Lions will be without Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow. No. 77 has been ruled out with a groin and foot injury.

Evan Brown will take over for Ragnow as he did for the final 13 games last season. But the injuries don’t stop there…

Pro Bowl left guard Jonah Jackson is questionable for Sunday’s game with a finger injury. Jackson missed considerable practice time during the week. Head coach Dan Campbell called Jackson “questionably probable” on Friday, but he said the same of Ragnow–who is out.

The Lions have yet to publicly reveal their plan if Jackson can’t play. They do have a few different options.

The easiest is to see what recent acquisition Drew Forbes can do. The Lions claimed Forbes off waivers from the Cleveland Browns during roster cutdowns, so he’s been in practices in Detroit for the last two weeks. Forbes has never taken a regular-season offensive snap since entering the league in 2019.

The Lions have another fresh body on the roster in Kayode Awosika, signed midweek from the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad. Awosika, like Forbes, is a college tackle with no practical experience at guard, however.

Then there’s the potential to kick right tackle Penei Sewell inside to guard. That would mean third tackle Matt Nelson would take over at right tackle, where he struggled all preseason. Logan Stenberg would likely shift from the current starting right guard to left guard (Jackson’s spot) in that scenario while keeping Sewell on the right side.

Awosika and Forbes can both theoretically step in at tackle too, but that’s asking a lot when facing Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat and a very talented Commanders line.

On the practice squad, the Lions have three players who could see promotions to active duty on Sunday. Tackle Dan Skipper, guard Darrin Paulo and center Ross Pierschbacher provide the practice squad depth. With no other options who have even played center before, expect Pierschbacher to be promoted on Sunday in a reserve capacity.

Lions shuffle the practice squad OL, sign Ross Pierschbacher

Lions shuffle the practice squad offensive line, sign Ross Pierschbacher and release Darrin Paulo

Darrin Paulo’s latest stint with the Detroit Lions didn’t even last 24 hours. Signed to the practice squad on Wednesday, Paulo was released by the Lions on Thursday.

In his place comes free agent lineman Ross Pierschbacher. The 27-year-old was with the New York Jets over the summer but did not make that team’s final roster. Pierschbacher was originally a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft out of Alabama, selected by what is now the Washington Commanders organization.

In both Washington and New York as well as a 2020 stint in Philadelphia, Pierschbacher primarily played center. He was a tackle in college but also has had some preseason run at both guard spots over the course of his NFL career. Given the Lions current injury status on the OL, versatility is a key asset for Pierschbacher.
