The Philadelphia 76ers give their praise to Charlie Brown Jr. as a perimeter defender.
The Philadelphia 76ers originally signed Charlie Brown Jr. to a 10-day hardship exception when they were dealing with December’s COVID-19 wave across the league. They needed bodies and brought him up from their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.
After seeing him in action, they converted him to a two-way deal, and he made an impact in Saturday’s road win over the Miami Heat. He only scored two points and he missed his 3-pointers, but his defensive effort really stood out for coach Doc Rivers.
“He is a heck of a defensive player,” Rivers said. “I think we were laughing because he came down and guarded Jimmy Butler, the next play he guarded (Tyler) Herro, next play he was on (Duncan) Robinson, next play he was on Strus. He is a one-man zone. He is just guarding anybody with the ball, but he is long, athletic and a really high basketball IQ.”
To Rivers’ point, the Sixers employed Brown Jr. against those three players and even Kyle Lowry on some possessions. His impact on that end was clear. In the first half, when Philadelphia’s offense was bogged down, the Sixers relied on Brown Jr. to get some defensive stops, keeping the team in the game.
“That was big for us,” said Tobias Harris. “Guys came in, stepped up. Charlie Brown came in, and he just gave us a huge lift. It’s great that he got that opportunity to showcase how good he can be on the defensive end. He really helped us there.”
There will be more opportunities for Brown Jr. to make an impact on the defensive end and prove he can be of value in big games.
