Sixers discuss tough loss to Cavaliers, give credit to Georges Niang

The Philadelphia 76ers discuss their tough loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers and give credit to Georges Niang for his shooting.

The Philadelphia 76ers gave themselves a chance on the road on Friday when they took on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Sixers did not shoot the ball well. They shot 44.7% from the floor compared to 54.9% for Cleveland, but the Sixers had a chance.

Philadelphia outrebounded Cleveland, 42-37, and had 24 second-chance points to stay in the game. However, the Cavaliers walked away with the 117-114 win as the Sixers were unable to overcome their poor shooting.

Tyrese Maxey shot 7-for-26 from the floor, but the Sixers received 23 points and six assists from Kyle Lowry. Mo Bamba added 14 points and seven rebounds while Tobias Harris had 21 points and seven boards.

“I don’t think we played that great,” coach Nick Nurse told reporters after the loss. “I mean, I know we hung out hung around, and hung in there. We got a huge night from Kyle and Mo in the second half basically for sure, but I thought we had some stretches where we just didn’t — too many stretches where we just didn’t do the right things defensively. We bogged down a little bit offensively as well, but we kept fighting and hanging in there and I just didn’t think we played quite well enough to get to get that tonight.”

Nurse isn’t wrong. The Sixers didn’t play all that great. The offense sputtered, again, and there were some stretches where the defense wasn’t as sharp as it should have been.

“I know we had a chance and all,” Nurse continued. “We probably needed that (Evan) Mobley 3 to not go in and we probably would’ve had a real good chance but again, it goes that way. I say that all the time. Not everybody’s gonna play good all the time and some other guys stepped up so we certainly need that.”

Nurse is referring to the 3-pointer Mobley hit with 28.2 seconds left to give Cleveland the lead for good. The Cavaliers wound up with a number of open 3s. Especially, former Sixer Georges Niang who had 25 points and hit five triples off the bench.

“I just think that he was really in the right place at the right time a lot and even when we changed coverages a few times, it just didn’t really work,” Nurse said of Niang. “Then we made a big mistake on him once when we when we did switch coverage. So you just can’t make those mistakes on a guy like that. Especially, when he’s already got it going. We made a big mistake on one coverage and left him all alone in the corner, but he’s one of the best shooters in the league. He had a super game against his old team for sure.”

The Sixers will head to Canada to take on the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

ESPN NBA survey lists Sixers among most disappointing offseasons

An ESPN NBA survey lists the Philadelphia 76ers as having one of the worst offseasons in the league.

The NBA offseason is winding down as teams are set to convene for training camp in preparation for the 2023-24 season. The Philadelphia 76ers begin camp on Oct. 3 at Colorado State University.

The biggest storyline concerning the Sixers all summer was the trade request of James Harden. The Beard opted into his $35.6 million player option for the upcoming season, but the move was not to remain in Philadelphia, it was to facilitate a trade.

The Los Angeles Clippers are his preferred destination, but the Sixers have not received an offer that they deem acceptable. Therefore, Harden is still on the roster and is expected to be at training camp with the team.

ESPN performed a survey of 15 coaches, scouts, and executives around the league and the Sixers received four votes as having the worst offseason in the league. Only the Toronto Raptors received more votes with five:

Philadelphia lost Georges Niang to Cleveland, has made minimum-level moves and is now dealing with the Harden situation

Losing Niang is a bigger loss than some might think. He was a positive guy in the locker room always cracking jokes and keeping things lively while also being a knockdown shooter from deep.

The Sixers have brought in some solid pieces in free agency, but none is the shooter Niang is. Combine that with the Harden saga and this was certainly a tumultuous offseason for Philadelphia.

Bulls expected to show ‘free agency interest’ in Georges Niang

The Chicago Bulls are expected to pursue Georges Niang in free agency this summer.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

The Chicago Bulls need to stay active this summer if they hope to get over the hump (again) and get back into the playoffs. They were bounced in the play-in tournament this past year, and, while a rebuild could help their roster moving forward, they have decided to run it back with the same core group.

If that’s their plan, they need to add significant help around Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic. Adding depth at the point guard position is crucial, but so is improving their 3-point shooting. They were one of the worst teams in the league in that category this past season.

According to recent rumblings, the Bulls are actively trying to improve their 3-point shooting. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that they are one of the teams looking to target Philadelphia 76ers forward Georges Niang in free agency.

“Niang is expected to receive free agency interest from the Bulls, 76ers, and Spurs, along with the Cavaliers, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.

The 30-year-old forward is entering his eighth NBA season and is a great presence at both ends of the court. He’s an irritant on the defensive end, and he knocks down his 3-point looks.

In Philadelphia this past year, Niang averaged 8.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game on 44.2% shooting from the field and 40.1% shooting from behind the 3-point line. He attempted 4.9 3-point shots per contest.

If the Bulls could lure Niang, it would be a great get.

Georges Niang gives thoughts on Sixers hiring Nick Nurse, free agency

Georges Niang gives his thoughts on the Philadelphia 76ers hiring Nick Nurse as well as the upcoming free agency.

Philadelphia 76ers forward Georges Niang is an important piece of the team’s bench unit as he brings shooting and energy when the Sixers need it. He shot 40.1% from deep in the 2022-23 season for the second unit and he is somebody who can be relied upon for instant offense.

Niang is a free agent after signing a 2-year deal with the Sixers in 2021. He has expressed an interest in returning to Philadelphia, but that remains to be seen.

Niang joined “The Hoop Collective” podcast, and he gave his thoughts on the team hiring Nick Nurse as its new head coach as well as his wants in free agency.

HoopsHype ranks Sixers, other NBA free agents for 2023 offseason

HoopsHype put together a ranking of the top free agents for the 2023 offseason which includes the Philadelphia 76ers free agents.

2023 free agency in the NBA begins on June 30, which is right around the corner. Teams are preparing to begin negotiating during the summer frenzy.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be no different. While they’re spending power in free agency is limited, the Sixers will be looking to at least keep some of their free agents in tow (i.e. James Harden).

HoopsHype put together a complete ranking of all 223 free agents in the upcoming class and that includes Philadelphia’s. The following will be the Sixers’ rankings on the list. The number next to their name is where they placed:

Stay or go: Predicting what Sixers will do with their 2023 free agents

Here is a prediction of what the Philadelphia 76ers will do with their crop of 2023 free agents.

As the Philadelphia 76ers navigate the offseason, there are only so many avenues the team can use to improve.

At the moment, per HoopsHype, the Sixers have:

  • Non-taxpayer mid-level exception: $12,220,000 (could lose access to this if they go over the apron)
  • Bi-annual exception: $4,448,000 (could lose access to this if they go over the apron)

There isn’t exactly a clear avenue for Philadelphia to go about improving their roster through free agency. Of course, there are sign-and-trade possibilities, but those are always hard to iron out. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has many questions he has to answer.

Of course, the biggest question is James Harden, but one has to figure Morey and the Sixers will figure something out there.

Free agency will begin on June 30 and per Spotrac, there are nine free agents the Sixers have to decide on.

Sixers Wire will predict who stays and who goes:

2022-23 final Philadelphia 76ers player grades: Georges Niang

Here are the final thoughts and a grade for Philadelphia 76ers forward Georges Niang for the 2022-23 season.

The 2022-23 season ended for the Philadelphia 76ers with a Game 7 loss to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs, so it’s time to reflect on the season.

The Sixers finished 54-28 and were third in the Eastern Conference behind the Milwaukee Bucks and the Celtics in the standings. Considering the 12-12 start, the season was a success despite the sour and familiar ending.

Now it’s time grade each player on the roster for what he did throughout the season. In this installment, Sixers Wire looks at Georges Niang, who continues to be a reliable bench piece.

76ers’ Georges Niang listed as ‘ambitious’ free-agent target for the Brooklyn Nets

Bleacher Report lists Philadelphia 76ers forward Georges Niang as an “ambitious” free-agent target for the Brooklyn Nets.

While the Brooklyn Nets go through their interesting offseason this summer, they have important decisions to make regarding free-agency. According to a recent article by Bleacher Report, an “ambitious” free-agent target for the Nets to go after if possible is Philadelphia 76ers forward Georges Niang.

Brooklyn’s most pressing decision with regards to free-agency is how much do they want to pay restricted free-agent Cam Johnson to stay in Brooklyn. Other than that, the Nets will have to figure out who else to keep or bring in through free-agency given that the team has five free-agents including: Johnson, Seth Curry, Yuta Watanabe, David Duke Jr., and Dru Smith.

Niang, 29, brings shooting to the table as his main skill for any NBA team. In 2022-23, Niang shot 40.1% from three-point land on 4.9 attempts per game for his fourth-best season shooting the three-ball. While Niang’s defense leaves a lot to be desired, he would be used as a reserve so his defensive flaws won’t likely impact the Nets enough to be a major detriment.

Here’s more of what B/R thinks of Brooklyn going after Niang in free-agency:

“With the $5 million taxpayer MLE likely to be their top spending tool, it won’t be easy for the Nets to address their scoring needs.

Georges Niang might be as good as it gets.

Perhaps a reserve heading into his age-30 season seems underwhelming, but Niang is a career 40.3 percent shooter from deep. He’s also durable, having logged at least 66 games in each of the last four years. Comfortable in the Utah Jazz’s motion-based “advantage” offense under Quin Snyder and the Philadelphia 76ers’ pick-and-roll heavy sets, Niang is a plug-and-play spacer who would improve the Nets’ 20th-ranked three-point accuracy after the All-Star break.”

Georges Niang expresses interest in returning to Sixers in free agency

Georges Niang has expressed a desire to return to the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency in 2023.

BOSTON — With the season over for the Philadelphia 76ers, the attention turns to the offseason. They have numerous questions that need to be answered and issues that need to be addressed.

Of course, the biggest question mark is James Harden. Nobody truly knows what’s going to happen with him. The Beard is likely to opt out of his player option and test free agency, but nobody knows how that situation will play out.

Another player entering free agency is Georges Niang. The Minivan averaged 8.2 points and 2.4 rebounds while shooting 40.1% from deep off the bench for the Sixers during the season. He shot 46.2% from deep in the playoffs — albeit on only 2.4 attempts per game.

After the Game 7 loss to the Boston Celtics, Niang expressed a desire to return to the Sixers.

“Obviously, I love it here in Philly,” Niang said. “Like I said, I haven’t really wrapped my head around everything, but I really enjoyed being here and the guys, the camaraderie, the organization, it’s been amazing.”

In two seasons with the Sixers, Niang has been an important piece to this team’s bench unit. He has shot 40.2% from deep during his time with the Sixers, and he has been a bit of a fan favorite by bringing energy and hustle to the floor every night.

“I’m super thankful that they’ve always welcomed me, the fans have welcomed me, and I don’t know what the summer holds,” Niang finished. “I’m not a future teller, but it’s gonna come and we’ll find out.”
