Knicks’ Shake Milton gives love to Tyrese Maxey before series with Sixers

New York Knicks guard Shake Milton gives love to former teammate Tyrese Maxey ahead of the playoff series with the Philadelphia 76ers.

NEW YORK — As the Philadelphia 76ers get set to take on the New York Knicks in Round 1 of the playoffs, the focus will be on Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey looking to overcome the challenges of Jalen Brunson and a physical Knicks team.

Another smaller piece of the puzzle is former Sixers guard Shake Milton. The 6-year veteran out of SMU played his first five seasons in Philadelphia before signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason. He was then traded to the Detroit Pistons at the deadline and then was waived before signing with the Knicks.

Milton has played only six games for New York, but he has a strong bond with Tyrese Maxey and heading into the series, had a lot of love for him and everything he’s accomplished thus far.

“I’m not surprised,” Milton smiled of Maxey. “I just see the way the kid works and what the game means to him. I think that’s the coolest thing to see is just all the hard work pay off and every time I see him I just tell him keep going and don’t ever look back so it’s really dope to see.”

As far as facing his former Sixers team and seeing some familiar faces, Milton is happy about that. He has been close with them since his departure, but on the flip side, the focus will be on his time in New York.

“Yeah, it’s cool,” he stated. “I imagine we don’t share too many words until after the series is over with, but definitely cool to see the homies, get to hoop, and compete against them.”

Naturally, it is a bit challenging for Milton at the moment. He has had to fight through a lot in terms of adversity in the 2023-24 season as far as playing for three different teams.

“It’s been good, man,” Milton said of his season. “It’s been just a steady process. Not trying to get too high, too low, just continue to put the work in. You never know where this thing will take you and how things can change in an instance so just working, man.”

It has been good for him to play in New York. The Knicks have a lot of history and playing in Madison Square Garden is a treat for him. It’s something he cherishes at the moment.

“It’s been a blessing to be out here,” he finished. “Especially, out here, man. Coming to work with these guys every day. They work extremely hard and you can just see the detail that they put into everything and of course, playing in The Garden is crazy. Every single night is just an experience. So it’s been dope.”

HoopsHype ranks Sixers, other NBA free agents for 2023 offseason

HoopsHype put together a ranking of the top free agents for the 2023 offseason which includes the Philadelphia 76ers free agents.

2023 free agency in the NBA begins on June 30, which is right around the corner. Teams are preparing to begin negotiating during the summer frenzy.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be no different. While they’re spending power in free agency is limited, the Sixers will be looking to at least keep some of their free agents in tow (i.e. James Harden).

HoopsHype put together a complete ranking of all 223 free agents in the upcoming class and that includes Philadelphia’s. The following will be the Sixers’ rankings on the list. The number next to their name is where they placed:

Stay or go: Predicting what Sixers will do with their 2023 free agents

Here is a prediction of what the Philadelphia 76ers will do with their crop of 2023 free agents.

As the Philadelphia 76ers navigate the offseason, there are only so many avenues the team can use to improve.

At the moment, per HoopsHype, the Sixers have:

  • Non-taxpayer mid-level exception: $12,220,000 (could lose access to this if they go over the apron)
  • Bi-annual exception: $4,448,000 (could lose access to this if they go over the apron)

There isn’t exactly a clear avenue for Philadelphia to go about improving their roster through free agency. Of course, there are sign-and-trade possibilities, but those are always hard to iron out. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has many questions he has to answer.

Of course, the biggest question is James Harden, but one has to figure Morey and the Sixers will figure something out there.

Free agency will begin on June 30 and per Spotrac, there are nine free agents the Sixers have to decide on.

Sixers Wire will predict who stays and who goes:

2022-23 final Philadelphia 76ers player grades: Shake Milton

Here are the final thoughts and a grade for Philadelphia 76ers guard Shake Milton after the 2022-23 season.

The 2022-23 season ended for the Philadelphia 76ers with a Game 7 loss to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs, so it’s time to reflect on the season.

The Sixers finished 54-28 and were third in the Eastern Conference behind the Milwaukee Bucks and the Celtics in the standings. Considering the 12-12 start, the season was a success despite the sour and familiar ending.

Now it’s time grade each player on the roster for what he did throughout the season. In this installment, Sixers Wire looks at Shake Milton who came up big in moments the Sixers needed.

Sixers discuss how injured Joel Embiid looks as they prepare for Round 2

The Philadelphia 76ers discuss how injured star Joel Embiid looks as they continue to prepare for Round 2.

CAMDEN, N.J. — At the moment, the Philadelphia 76ers do not have an opponent for the second round of the playoffs. That could change on Thursday if the Boston Celtics finish off the Atlanta Hawks in Game 6.

The status of injured Joel Embiid continues to be at the forefront as the Sixers prepare for the semifinals. They expect to know more about his status on Thursday afternoon. Coach Doc Rivers revealed at practice that the big fella was meeting with the doctors and they should know more soon.

As far as Embiid has looked physically and mentally in whatever capacity he has been able to participate with the team, his teammates are happy with what they have seen.

“He looks great,” Shake Milton said. “He comes in and he’s around and, I don’t know, I’ve seen him for five years. So I’m not really really worried about it. I know whenever Game 1 comes around and he’s available, I know he’s gonna dominate like he always does. With Jo, it’s nothing you really have to worry about. He’s getting his work in and he’s going to be prepared.”

The big fella still needs to get his work in so he can be ready to go on the floor for the semifinals, but if Embiid is in a good mood and can stay in that positive state, that’s a big help in his recovery.

“Jo is always great, man,” Tobias Harris said. “He’s been good. We’ve been able to see him and just make sure that he’s progressing and whatnot. So yeah, other than that, he’s good.”

Milton and Harris have been teammates with Embiid the longest on this current roster. If any of his teammates can speak on his state of mind and how he looks, it’s them. Game 1 of the conference semifinals is Monday.

Player grades: Joel Embiid-less Sixers eliminate Nets with Game 4 win

The Joel Embiid-less Philadelphia 76ers eliminate the Brooklyn Nets in Game 4 to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

NEW YORK–The Philadelphia 76ers looked to eliminate the Brooklyn Nets in Game 4 on Saturday afternoon as they were looking to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals and give Joel Embiid as much time to rest up as possible. The big fella is dealing with a right knee sprain and the Sixers had to battle the Nets on Saturday without him.

After the Nets opened up an 11-point lead and they sustained it for the most part, the Sixers began to stir in the third quarter. After it looked like they had been sleepwalking for most of the day, they were able to kick it into high gear and rally for a 96-88 win. Philadelphia earned its first sweep of a seven-game series since 1985 when they swept the then-Washington Bullets and is in the semifinals for the third consecutive season.

Tobias Harris had 25 points and 12 rebounds, James Harden had 17 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, Tyrese Maxey had 16 and eight boards, and Paul Reed had 10 points and 15 rebounds. De’Anthony Melton added 15 points with all of those coming in the fourth quarter.

Here are the player grades following the win:

Player grades: Paul Reed, role players lead Sixers over Nets in finale

Paul Reed and the role players step up to lead the Philadelphia 76ers over the Brooklyn Nets in the season finale.

NEW YORK–The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Barclays Center on Easter Sunday looking to finish the season on the right note as they took on the Brooklyn Nets. What “right note” means is making sure they are all in one piece before they head into the playoffs.

Also, when considering they will face this same Nets team in Game 1 of Round 1, neither team played any of their main rotation pieces. In another game that featured all of the role players, Paul Reed and the Sixers came out on top 134-105 to head into the postseason on a high note. Reed had 17 points and 10 rebounds in some very productive minutes for Philadelphia.

Shake Milton had 20 points and eight assists and Mac McClung had 20 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists to lead the Sixers and Louis King also had 20 points. Dewayne Dedmon added 14 and seven rebounds while Danuel House Jr. added nine points and Jalen McDaniels had eight points.

Here are the player grades following the win:

Player grades: Jalen McDaniels, bench leads Sixers past Hawks in OT

Jalen McDaniels has a nice night as the Philadelphia 76ers were able to knock off the Atlanta Hawks on the road.

The Philadelphia 76ers found themselves locked in another meaningless contest on Friday as they paid a visit to the Atlanta Hawks on the road. The Sixers decided to smartly sit Joel Embiid, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris, PJ Tucker, and De’Anthony Melton in order to get them ready for the playoffs while the Hawks are fighting for play-in tournament positioning.

The result was the Sixers played Jaden Springer and Mac McClung fresh off a G League title with the Delaware Blue Coats on Thursday, but Philadelphia showed off a lot of fight rallying from 15 points down and they were able to knock off the Hawks 136-131 in overtime in an impressive effort. Jalen McDaniels had 24 points and 11 rebounds in a solid night and Georges Niang had 24 points while knocking down five triples.

Springer had a career-high 19 points, Danuel House Jr. had 22 points, Montrezl Harrell had 11 and 10 rebounds, and Paul Reed had 10 and eight rebounds. Shake Milton added 15 and a career-high 16 assists.

Here are the player grades following the surprising win:

Player grades: Joel Embiid, Sixers drop home finale to desperate Heat

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers drop the home finale to a desperate Miami Heat team.

PHILADELPHIA–The regular season home finale didn’t mean anything for the Philadelphia 76ers. They are officially locked into the No. 3 seed for the playoffs beginning on April 15 and the goal now is to make sure everybody is on the same page for the postseason. The Miami Heat, on the other hand, are still chasing a playoff spot.

It was evident early as the Heat built up a 33-point lead, and while the Sixers worked their way back into it a bit in the third quarter, Miami eventually walked away with a 129-101 victory to keep their hopes for the No. 6 seed alive. Jimmy Butler had 24 points, six assists, and three rebounds to lead the Heat.

Joel Embiid had 21 points and six rebounds for Philadelphia, James Harden had 14 points, four assists, and four rebounds, and Tobias Harris had 11 points and five rebounds, Jalen McDaniels had 10 off the bench while Shake Milton had 11 and nine assists.
