Matisse Thybulle gives love to Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Sixers fans

Former Philadelphia 76ers forward Matisse Thybulle gives a lot of love to Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and the fans in the city.

PHILADELPHIA — Former Philadelphia 76ers, now Portland Trail Blazers, wing Matisse Thybulle made his second return to the City of Brotherly Love on Sunday night looking to continue to grow in Portland.

The Sixers traded Thybulle to the Blazers at the 2023 deadline as part of a four-team deal that netted them Jalen McDaniels. While McDaniels is with the Toronto Raptors, Thybulle is still in Portland and looking to continue to develop as a player.

After the Sixers defeated the rebuilding Blazers 126-98, Thybulle gave a lot of love to Joel Embiid who had 35 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists, and six blocks in a dominant effort.

“You really just kinda see that there is no answer for him when he decides to turn it on that it’s one of those unstoppable forces,” Thybulle said of Embiid. “The more he’s able to do that, the more success they’re going to have as a team because, like I said, there’s not a lot of answers for him.”

Thybulle turned his attention to Maxey, who is morphing into an All-Star caliber player with the way he has improved. He had 26 points, made four triples, and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line on Sunday.

“Tyrese has always had that star power,” Thybulle beamed. “Now that his green light gets brighter, he gets the keys to this team, I think we’re just going to see more and more how potent he really is on offense.”

When Thybulle was in Philadelphia, he was a well-liked player within the team. He always had a smile on his face. He did what was asked of him and he also changed games for the Sixers with his defensive work. The Blazers thought the same of him when they matched the offer sheet he signed with the Dallas Mavericks in the offseason.

“It was great to see Matisse,” Maxey said. “I love that guy, seriously. I sent him a text when he got his money. I’m really happy for him, honestly. He works his tail off, great guy; he’s nice to everybody, a great dude. I’m really happy for him, honestly man. I think it’s a great situation for him and he’s out there playing and he’s having a good time while doing it.”

When Thybulle was introduced in the Portland starting lineup on Sunday, the Wells Fargo Center crowd gave him a warm welcome back. He enjoyed that as he still feels a connection to the city.

“I still love this city,” he said with his trademark smile. “I still feel like part of my heart’s in this city. It was my introduction to the NBA, first time really leaving home, and I really felt like I put down some roots out here and it did feel like home, so yeah, I still got a lot of love for this city.”

Joel Embiid reacts to Matisse Thybulle’s recent comments about Sixers

Joel Embiid gives his thoughts on Matisse Thybulle’s recent comments about the Philadelphia 76ers.

PHILADELPHIA–Back on Feb. 9, the Philadelphia 76ers sent Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers in what ended up being a four-team deal that saw the Sixers acquire Jalen McDaniels from the Charlotte Hornets.

In 10 games entering Friday night’s return to Philadelphia, Thybulle was shooting 40.9% from deep and it was obvious that he has been playing freely in Portland. Things just weren’t working for him with the Sixers and he has been able to find a way to succeed with the Blazers.

Before his return to the Wells Fargo Center, Thybulle sat down with Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer and he opened up about his time in Philadelphia compared to Portland as he has been receiving an opportunity to play more and not playing in a “place of fear” as he told Pompey.

Thybulle was talking with Joel Embiid before Friday’s 120-119 Sixers victory and after the win, the big fella stated that he didn’t like his comments.

“I loved him when he was here,” said Embiid. “I kinda told him I kinda was not happy with some of the comments that was made lately, but it’s whatever.”

Embiid then went a bit deeper with his thoughts on Thybulle’s comments.

“Playing in Philly is not easy,” he added. “It’s a lot of pressure that comes with it. Every year, you’re expected to win. It doesn’t even matter if they believe that you have a good team or a good enough team to win a championship. That’s the expectations and that’s why there’s not a lot of people that can play here and survive here.”

Here’s the thing with the comment, Thybulle wasn’t talking about the city of Philadelphia when he said “place of fear”. It was more about how the Sixers were handling his minutes. He was shooting only 33.3% from deep with the Sixers, but he only took 1.3 attempts per game and he averaged only 12.1 minutes. He didn’t get much of a shot.

With the Blazers, he’s getting more of an opportunity averaging 30.4 minutes per game and he entered Friday taking 4.4 attempts from deep. Portland is allowing him to play through mistakes that the Sixers really didn’t at times.

“Some guys have different mindsets,” Embiid finished. “For some guys, it’s all about winning, and for some guys, it’s all about just playing basketball, but like I said he was great when we had him here. I wish him well. I still believe that he has a lot of potential and it’s all about him putting the work in and especially shooting and defensively, he’s a monster.”

Thybulle will continue to move on with the Blazers while Philadelphia will now turn its attention to the Washington Wizards on Sunday.

Matisse Thybulle enjoyed time with Sixers, opens up on being traded

Matisse Thybulle revealed he enjoyed his time with the Philadelphia 76ers and he opened up on being traded and keeping relationships.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers traded up to Matisse Thybulle with the 20th pick in the 2019 NBA draft out of Washington hoping he would morph into the team’s 3-and-D player. While Thybulle did become one of the elite defenders in the game, the 3 aspect of it didn’t come through in Philadelphia.

Therefore, the Sixers sent Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers in what ended up being a four-team deal that sent Jalen McDaniels to Philadelphia from the Charlotte Hornets.

In 10 games with the Blazers, Thybulle is shooting 40.9% from deep entering Friday’s contest with the Sixers at the Wells Fargo Center. This marks his first game back in Philadelphia since the trade which is an unusually quick turnaround for a return after a trade, but Thybulle opened up on his time with the Sixers and his reaction to being traded to Portland.

Matisse Thybulle mentions one key difference between Sixers, Blazers

Matisse Thybulle lists one key difference between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Philadelphia 76ers sent Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers at the deadline on Feb. 9 in what ended up being a four-team deal that brought in Jalen McDaniels from the Charlotte Hornets.

Thybulle was Philadelphia’s top defender; he wreaked havoc every time he was out on the floor. Though he was an elite defender, questions always existed about his offense. Per team president Daryl Morey, it’s why the Sixers pulled the trigger on the deal for McDaniels.

In 10 games with the Blazers, all starts, Thybulle is averaging 7.5 points and he’s shooting 40.9% from deep on 4.4 attempts per game. He’s also averaging 30.4 minutes in Portland after averaging only 12.1 minutes with the Sixers.

“I see Matisse over there doing good,” said Paul Reed ahead of Thybulle’s return to Philadelphia on Friday. “He’s finding himself. I’m excited to see him. I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be talking to him and say what’s up. It’s gonna be good vibes.”

Thybulle listed one key difference between the Sixers and the Blazers to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer:

“Any player that’s playing out of a place of fear is going to struggle,” he said. “Like there’s going to just be friction in everything you try to do. But when you play for a place of just discipline and receptiveness to what the game’s giving and what you are reading from it. I think there’s a lot more opportunity.

“And for me, specifically, I feel like there was a lot more fear-based play in Philadelphia as opposed to what I’m doing here in Portland.”

Thybulle was in a tough situation in Philadelphia. There were plenty of nights he played a bunch of minutes only to not get off the bench the next night. One could make the case it was his doing because of the offensive questions, but he wasn’t able to really battle and play through any mistakes.

Now, he gets that opportunity with the Blazers and he has taken advantage of it.

Doc Rivers, Sixers happy to see Matisse Thybulle succeed with Blazers

Doc Rivers and the Philadelphia 76ers are happy to see Matisse Thybulle succeeding with the Portland Trail Blazers ahead of his return to Philly.

CAMDEN, N.J. — At the Feb. 9 trade deadline, the Philadelphia 76ers sent Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers in a four-team deal that brought Jalen McDaniels to Philadelphia. The deal can be viewed as a win-win at the moment because both players have made an impact with their new teams.

The Blazers will pay a visit to Philadelphia on Friday, which will mark Thybulle’s first game against his former team since the deal. In 10 games with Portland, Thybulle is averaging 7.5 points, 1.8 steals, and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 40.9% from deep as he’s taking advantage of his opportunities next to Damian Lillard.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him,” said coach Doc Rivers about Thybulle. “I don’t want him to do great, obviously, but I think it’s a great place for him. I think playing along Dame and watching Dame work will help him as well at his position. You’re guaranteed to get open stuff with Dame. You have to.”

Thybulle has always had to take advantage of soft spots in opposing defenses and understand where to be on the offensive end. So far, he has been able to do so in Portland.

“Watching Boston last night, they committed two and three guys to the guy (Lillard) and so you can cut, move, space, you’re gonna get a lot of stuff,” Rivers added. “He’s (Thybulle) getting minutes there which I think is important for him.”

Thybulle was always a likable guy in Philadelphia. He has an infectious smile and he worked hard at his craft. It didn’t work out with the Sixers and he is succeeding to begin his time with the Blazers.

“It’s gonna be great to see him,” added Tyrese Maxey. “I’m proud of him. He’s been playing pretty good. I hope we go out there and we beat them, honestly and I hope we have some laughs and some hugs and I hope he goes out there and competes like the player that I know he is and it should be fun.”

As far as how they can succeed despite Thybulle’s tendency to go for blocks from behind, Maxey has an idea of what to do.

“Make sure I look over my shoulder every time I shoot,” he laughed. “He’s really good at getting to the ball, playing passing lanes, he always knew the other team’s scouting report, so I know he’ll know ours coming in. He’s gonna play hard; he’s gonna compete at the end of the day.”

The Sixers will welcome Thybulle back to the Wells Fargo Center on Friday at 7 p.m. EST.

Former Sixers F Matisse Thybulle knocks down 4 triples in Blazers debut

Former Philadelphia 76ers forward Matisse Thybulle knocked down four triples in his debut for the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Philadelphia 76ers made a deadline move on Thursday when they sent longtime forward Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers in a deal that netted them Jalen McDaniels from the Charlotte Hornets in a four-team trade.

McDaniels has been terrific for Philadelphia thus far; he has found his role on both ends of the floor. He had eight points on 3-for-4 shooting, he knocked down a 3, and he had five rebounds and three assists in Monday’s win over the Houston Rockets. It’s safe to say the Sixers are happy with their new addition so far.

As for Thybulle, he made his debut for the Trail Blazers on Monday, and he started with a bang. He knocked down four 3s to score 14 points and added six rebounds and three blocks in a start as Portland knocked off the Los Angeles Lakers, 127-115. It looks like it has been a helpful trade for everybody involved in the deal.

Defensively, Thybulle’s rejections were emphatic. This is a block that Sixers fans are familiar with seeing from him.

Thybulle spent his first 3.5 seasons with the Sixers, but looks to continue his career with a fresh start with the Blazers. The fact he was starting on Monday makes it look like he will have a big role in Portland.

Matisse Thybulle had the biggest smile after blocking Lakers’ Malik Beasley into another dimension

Thybulle looked so happy in Portland.

It didn’t take long for former Philadelphia 76ers wing Matisse Thybulle to record a defensive highlight during his debut with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Thybulle, who won the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award while playing in college at the University of Washington, has twice earned NBA All-Defensive Second-Team honors since turning pro.

While his time with the 76ers came to an abrupt end after playing a career-low 12.1 minutes per game thus far this season, Thybulle looked immediately ready to contribute for Trail Blazers’ defensive-minded head coach Chauncy Billups.

During the first quarter of the game against the Los Angeles Lakers, the 25-year-old wing closed out on sharpshooter Malik Beasley. The results, which you can see below, were spectacular:

After falling out of Doc Rivers’ regular rotation in Philadelphia, it was great for Portland fans to see Thybulle look so happy after making such a strong impact in his Trail Blazers debut.

At the end of the first half, Thybulle had already recorded 2 blocks and 1 steal. He is one of the league leaders in deflections per 36 minutes.

During each of his past three seasons, per Cleaning the Glass, Thybulle has finished in the 100th percentile among wings in block percentage and steal percentage.

Doc Rivers talks Sixers adding Jalen McDaniels, losing Matisse Thybulle

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers gives his thoughts on the addition of Jalen McDaniels and losing Matisse Thybulle.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers made a move on Thursday shortly before the deadline when they sent Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers that netted them Jalen McDaniels from the Charlotte Hornets in a four-team deal.

The Sixers are moving forward now and hoping that McDaniels can help them on both ends of the floor. He is a long defender and he is somebody who can defend the opposition’s best scorer while also providing something on the offensive end.

Coach Doc Rivers is looking forward to employing him on defense and continuing to grow the team on that end.

“Just his athleticism,” Rivers said of McDaniels. “He’s multi-positional. Watching film, he’s guarded 1 through 4 and sometimes 5, the team’s 5. He has great hands, a great roller, a great rebounder, other than that, not much, but that’s what we’re hoping.”

As far as McDaniels going from a rebuilding team to one that is making a push for a championship, Rivers laid it out very clearly for him as they come together with this group.

“You clearly tell him what the expectations are here,” Rivers laughed. “That’s literally the first thing you do. Just to let him know without saying anything about the other team. You just tell him ‘I know where you’ve been, but we have high expectations. Not only on the court, off the court, but everywhere.’ 9.9 out of 10, that’s a very good thing for players to hear so he’s very excited.”

When it comes to Thybulle, he now joins the Blazers where he looks for s fresh start and an opportunity to grow. Rivers was asked if he had plateaued, but he doesn’t think so.

“I don’t know that,” he stated. “I think Matisse is gonna be—he’s still young. He has a chance to be a better player. There are things he has to work on. Just being more consistent, his shot obviously, but he’s putting in the work. We did that for a different reason. Not because he’s plateaued. He’s too young to have plateaued.”

Tyrese Maxey reacts to Sixers moving Matisse Thybulle for Jalen McDaniels

Tyrese Maxey reacts to the Philadelphia 76ers moving Matisse Thybulle and bringing in Jalen McDaniels.

CAMDEN, N.J. — It’s never easy to be moved in the NBA at the deadline. It is the time when players have their names involved in almost every rumor, and if a trade happens that player has to move everything in the middle of a season.

This is what former Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is dealing with. He was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in a four-team deal on Thursday. The deal netted the Sixers Jalen McDaniels and a second-round pick from the Charlotte Hornets and a second-round pick from the Trail Blazers.

Tyrese Maxey, who has been through three trade deadlines in his career, wished Thybulle luck.

“It’s a hard day,” Maxey said. “It’s a tough day to see one of your brothers, one of mine that I’ve been here with for last three years, depart and all you can do is wish him the best and hope that he prevails.”

As for McDaniels, Maxey offered his thoughts.

“He’s good,” Maxey said of McDaniels. “He’s long. He’s a defender. He can shoot the ball and play well. play different positions. A utility guy I think we can use.”

Matisse Thybulle spray-painted his own mural as a heartfelt goodbye to Philadelphia

Well this was a cool way to say goodbye.

It’s so hard to say goodbye, but sometimes it must be done. And for a lot of NBA players, the trade deadline doesn’t leave much of a choice.

Matisse Thybulle was one of those players Thursday, traded by the only team he had ever played for during his four-year NBA career. The Philadelphia 76ers sent him to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a three-team deal, parting with their 2019 first-round pick whose role had been reduced this season.

Thybulle said goodbye to city of Philadelphia in the coolest way possible, tagging a mural of himself on a building with “Thank you Philly” and his signature.

The mural was painted in March 2021 by local artist Jimmy Glossblack. The Philadelphia Inquirer caught up with the owner of the building, a bar called Garage Fishtown, to get his thoughts.

“It’s such a sweet comment, and the response has been pretty loving towards Matisse,” Jason Evanchik said. “It was a nice little goodbye.”
