Two former Alabama players selected in 2023 XFL Rookie Draft

Former Alabama players Jahleel Billingsley and Chadarius Townsend were recently drafted in the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft.

Former Alabama players Chadarius Townsend and Jahleel Billingsley were drafted in the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft on Friday.

Townsend was drafted by the Seattle Sea Dragons and Billingsley was drafted by the San Antonio Brahmas.

In order for Townsend and Billingsley to have been eligible for the draft, both players had to be eligible for the April NFL Draft and not under contract to any other team.

Billingsley spent three seasons at Alabama before transferring to Texas for his senior season. Billingsley struggled to stay on the field for the Longhorns due to off-the-field issues.

Over the course of his college career, Billingsley hauled in 40 receptions for 597 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Townsend spent three seasons as a reserve running back at Alabama. Upon transferring to Texas Tech in 2020, Townsend played both running back and wide receiver. As a Red Raider, Townsend had 28 carries for 164 yards and one touchdown. He also had three receptions for 23 yards.

The two will look to forge a path for themselves in the XFL. Several players in the past have done so and received opportunities in the NFL. It will be interesting to see how the two perform at the professional level.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama football players at the professional level.

Report: Texas Tech running back arrested on Monday

It was reported on Monday that Texas Tech Red Raiders running back SaRodorick Thompson was arrested. He was booked under racing on highway.

The Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders will kickoff their 70th matchup on Saturday. Texas finished off UTEP 59-3 while Tech survived a close on against Houston Baptist 35-33. The two will start off the 2020 Big 12 Conference schedule after closing out the 2019 campaign. Texas won that game 49-24 after falling down by two touchdowns early on.

For the Red Raiders, one of the their key offensive players is SaRodorick Thompson. The running back made a jump last season but came into the season as they guy. He was highlighted in the “Tale of the Tape” matchup that was published over the weekend. It is quite possible that he might not even suit up now against Texas now. KCBD Channel 11 in Lubbock is reporting that Thompson was arrested on Monday.

The charge in which he was arrested was for “racing on highway.” Thompson finished the game against HBU with 22 carries for 118 yards and two touchdowns in their win. It is unclear at this point on if Thompson will be available to play or if he will be held out for disciplinary actions. Should he be unable to go, Tahj Brooks and Chadarius Townsend will likely be the running backs to see most of the action against Texas.

Texas Longhorns vs Texas Tech: RB Tale of the Tape

In our ongoing preview of Texas Longhorns vs Texas Tech we preview the backs. Ingram vs Thompson in the running back tale of the tape.

A new game week in the Big 12 Conference means a new game to prepare for. The Texas Tech Red Raiders are set to host the Texas Longhorns in their Big 12 opener on Sept. 26. Both teams are fresh off wins in their lone nonconference game of the year. The Longhorns game was over midway through the first quarter while Tech came down to the wire in a two-point victory.

Previously we looked at the quarterbacks in our tale of the tape. So we shift our focus to another member of the backfield, the running back position.  The Longhorns have multiple running backs that can be on the field, while the same can be said for Tech. The primary backs of focus in the tale of the tape are Keaontay Ingram and SoRodorick Thompson. Both had different games in the opener. Ingram only managed about nine touches while Thompson finished with 24.

Alabama football countdown: 12 days until kickoff

We are 12 days from Alabama football kicking off its season on the road against the Missouri Tigers to start a 10-game, SEC only schedule.

[jwplayer WStU61Lr]

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding college football over the last couple of months, but as of right now, the season still looks like it’s a go for the SEC, ACC and Big 12.

So, what does that mean? It means that we can continue the Countdown to Kickoff en route to the Crimson Tide — and the rest of the SEC — getting things underway on Sept. 26.

With it now being Sept. 14, we are officially 12 days away from the start!

Newly added walk-on quarterback Logan Burnett, the grad transfer from Mississippi State and TCU, now wears the No. 12 after former Alabama wide receiver Chadarius Townsend transferred to Texas Tech.

Junior punter Skyler DeLong out of Fort Mill (S.C.) also wears it.

The number is one of the more legendary in Crimson Tide history, however, as several historically great quarterbacks such as Joe Namath, Ken Stabler and even Greg McElroy have worn it.

  • Oct. 3 vs. Texas A&M (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
  • Oct. 10 at Ole Miss (Oxford, Miss.)
  • Oct. 17 vs. Georgia (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)

LOOK: Chadarius Townsend sports new Texas Tech gear

Chadarius Townsend is finishing his collegiate career at Texas Tech, and now he’s finally gotten a chance to rock the gear.

Former Alabama running back/wide receiver Chadarius Townsend spent three seasons in Tuscaloosa playing for the Crimson Tide, but now the Tanner (Ala.) native will finish his collegiate career at Texas Tech.

On Sunday afternoon, Townsend posted pictures on his Twitter account of himself in his new Red Raider gear with the caption “Beginning of something great”:

Townsend announced earlier this offseason that he would be entering the transfer portal, and ultimately chose Texas Tech over Mississippi State and several others.

Coming out of high school, the 6-foot, 194-pound athlete was rated as a four-star prospect in the 2017 recruiting class. In addition, he checked in as the No. 175 overall player, the No. 5 athlete and the No. 7 player from the state of Alabama, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

During his time in Tuscaloosa, Townsend spend time at wide receiver, running back and even, for a short period of time, defensive back. He was known as a player who was willing to play wherever the coaching staff needed him, and that willingness led to him being well-respected by teammates, fans and the Tide coaching staff.

With the Red Raiders only having two scholarship running backs on the roster (on of which is a three-star true freshman), Townsend will have the opportunity to earn playing time in Matt Wells’ high-powered offense.

Former Alabama WR Chadarius Townsend will play RB at Texas Tech

Texas Tech took to Twitter over the weekend to officially announce the addition of Chadarius Townsend to the team.

Texas Tech took to Twitter over the weekend to officially announce the addition of Chadarius Townsend to the team, but they also shared one more important detail: he will be a running back for the Red Raiders.

Townsend has played several different positions on offense. In high school, he was a standout quarterback at Tanner High School in Tanner, Alabama. For the Crimson Tide, Townsend spent time at both running back and wide receiver, and also played on special teams for two years.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Townsend was a four-star prospect, and was the No. 5 athlete and No. 7 player in the state of Alabama in the 2017 recruiting class.

Townsend played in 19 games over the past two season, six of which were i 2019.

In his career, Townsend totaled 22 yards on 8 carries.

Former Alabama WR Chadarius Townsend transferring to Texas Tech

Former four-star Chadarius Townsend has announced where he’ll finish his collegiate career after entering the transfer portal last week.

Another Alabama player entered the transfer portal last week when Tanner (Ala.) native Chadarius Townsend chose finish his playing career elsewhere, and now, it looks like he’s found his new home.

On Tuesday afternoon, the former Crimson Tide receiver/running back announced via his social media accounts that he would be playing for Texas Tech this upcoming season:

Townsend is now the second former receiver within the last couple to choose to transfer from Alabama, as Tyrell Shavers announced that he would be heading to Starkville to play for Mike Leach and Mississippi State.

Townsend was a four-star prospect coming out of Tanner High School and was rated as the No. 175 overall player, No. 5 athlete and No. 7 player from the state of Alabama in the 2017 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

The Red Raiders are in need of more depth at the running back position, so it’s possible that Townsend could see action in the backfield rather than receiver, but either way, he’s a talented playmaker who just couldn’t find his way onto the field at Alabama consistently.

REPORT: Alabama WR Chadarius Townsend to transfer

A day after losing wide receiver Tyrell Shavers to Mississippi State, Alabama is set to lose WR/RB Chadarius Townsend.

Just one day after it was reported that former Alabama wide receiver Tyrell Shavers was leaving the program and transferring to SEC West rival Mississippi State, it has been reported that Chadarius Townsend will also be departing.

Townsend has spent time at Alabama practicing as a wide receiver, a running back and a defensive back.

Matt Zenitz of AL.com was the first to report on his intent to transfer.

Townsend, an in-state recruit who joined Alabama in 2016 as a four-star athlete, will be immediately eligible to play as a graduate transfer.

He appeared in two games in 2019 as a running back where he had 22 yards on eight carries.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated as to where Townsend will decide to continue his collegiate football career.

Analysis: Chadarius Townsend has done everything in his power to help his team out. Whether it was playing wide receiver, running back, special teams or even some cornerback, the north Alabama native has answered the call.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t let to a lot of on-the-field success thus far, but that doesn’t mean Townsend’s time isn’t coming — it just might need to start with getting more action on special teams.

As far as his position, he’s still listed as a wide receiver on roster, but like with running back, the receiver position is once again loaded with talent.

Could a move to the defensive side of the football help? Probably, as the Tide is seeking more depth in the secondary after the losses of Trevon Diggs, Xavier McKinney, Shyheim Carter and Jared Mayden, as well as the unexpected losses of Nigel Knott (medical/transfer) and Scooby Carter (transfer).

Keep an eye on Townsend during the offseason to see where he ends up.
