Alabama Crimson Tide Snapshot Profile: No. 11 Traeshon Holden

Continuing the Crimson Tide Snapshot Profile, we take a look at junior WR Traeshon Holden.

Going into the 2022 football season, Roll Tide Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Alabama Crimson Tide roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Nick Saban this season.

Today, we breakdown rising junior wide receiver Traeshon Holden, who has gotten the true Alabama experience: not seeing the field much because the upperclassmen that are above you on the depth chart are projected first-round prospects. That being said, 2022 could be the year Holden sees some consistent playing time.

Depth Chart Overview

Holden is not currently slated to be a starting wide receiver for the team in 2022, but could very easily work into that role. Jermaine Burton and Tyler Harrell were two key receivers added to the roster for the upcoming season via the transfer portal. The third starting spot is seemingly up for grabs. Holden will compete against Ja’Corey Brooks and JoJo Earle for it.

Alabama roster: Breaking down position-by-position based on recruiting rankings

Breaking down the Alabama Crimson Tide roster based off recruiting rankings coming out of high school.

Alabama is expected to make another push for a national title in 2021. When evaluating the talent, it’s clear that the Crimson Tide remains one of the top contenders in college football.

But what exactly does that talent look like? From a recruiting standpoint, it has gotten absurd. Well, it’s always been absurd under Nick Saban, but it’s still wild to actually see on paper.

Roll Tide Wire decided to break down the roster position-by-position, but we did it a bit differently. Instead of a depth chart, we broke each position down in order to recruiting rankings coming out of high school — or JUCO.

The 247Sports Composite Rankings were used, mostly because they’re the closest to a consensus. But the amount of four- and five-star prospects on Alabama’s roster is ridiculous. Check it out for yourself.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 99 Ty Perine

Sophomore punter Ty Perine is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.

Each day, we’ll release two player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.

Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.

Next up on the list is sophomore punter Ty Perine out of Prattville (Ala.).

HS ranking (247Sports): 0-star / N/A overall / N/A / N/A

HS ranking (Rivals): 0-star / N/A overall / N/A / N/A

Analysis: Ty Perine became an Alabama fan-favorite through his first season in Tuscaloosa. After seeing inconsistencies at the punter position with Skyler DeLong, Perine assumed the starting role during the Tennessee game and displayed a strong leg.

The issue with Perine, like is most cases with young legs, was consistency, and the hope is that he can hone his craft during the offseason to become a more reliable option consistently.

But considering he went from being a somewhat unknown walk-on outside of the Prattville area to being named Freshman All-SEC by the Coaches, Perine has proven that he’s capable of improvement and surprising people, so don’t be surprised if he turns some heads during Year 2.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 97 Joseph Bulovas

Redshirt junior K Joseph Bulovas is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

HS ranking (247Sports): 3-star / No. 1341 overall / No. 6 K / No. 48 LA

HS ranking (Rivals): 3-star / N/A overall / No. 1 K / N/A

Analysis: Heading into his four year, Joseph Bulovas is still trying to find his footing as Alabama’s place kicker. True freshman Will Reichard seemingly beat him out for the job to start last season, but a hip injury forced Bulovas back into a starting role.

During his nine starts, the Louisiana native converted 8-of-11 field goal attempts (72.7%) and 59-of-61 extra point attempts. Those five misses between the two are what most focus on, however — especially the extra points.

It’s now been eight misses over the last two years, which has created somewhat of a trust issue from fans. But with that being said, the hope is that the former No. 1 kicker in the 2017 class (according to Rivals.com) can right the ship.

Unfortunately, he’ll have Reichard returning from the injury to compete with, and there will be a lot of people who assume the younger option from Hoover (Ala.) will be the victor.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 95 Ishmael Sopsher

Redshirt freshman DL Ishmael Sopsher is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.

Next up on the list is redshirt freshman defensive lineman Ishmael Sopsher out of Amite (La.).

HS ranking (247Sports): 4-star / No. 47 overall / No. 5 DT / No. 3 LA

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 72 overall / No. 3 DT / No. 5 LA

Analysis: Ishmael Sopsher was the highest-rated defensive line commitment for Alabama in the 2019 recruiting class, but he actually earned the least amount of playing time of the group during his freshman season.

That doesn’t mean that Sopsher should be counted out, however. With his conditioning and overall development expected to improve with an entire offseason under his belt, the hope is that the Louisiana native can continue to take steps towards becoming a dominate presence.

The ceiling is extremely high for the 6-foot-4, 334-pound nose tackle, as long as he continues to move in the right direction. He’s powerful and moves well for a player his size, and that should help him in his quest of earning more playing time.

The arrival of freshman five-star Tim Smith, as well as four stars Jah-Marien Latham and Jamil Burroughs, in the 2020 class makes the defensive line rotation all the deeper, but Sopsher will still have a chance to work his way up the depth chart — eventually.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 94 DJ Dale

Next up on the list is sophomore defensive lineman DJ Dale out of Birmingham (Ala.).

HS ranking (Rivals): 3-star / N/A overall / No. 34 DT / No. 13 ALA

Analysis: Despite being the lowest rated defensive line signee in Alabama’s 2019 recruiting class, Birmingham native DJ Dale was the first to earn a starting job amongst the talented group.

That starting job, while it was pointing in that direction during the spring, was officially earned during fall camp, and Dale proceeded to start the first 10 games of the 2019 season before a knee injury caused him to miss the last three, including the Citrus Bowl win against Michigan.

The hope is that Dale can return back to full strength prior to fall camp this season, and if that happens, he’ll more than likely join LaBryan Ray and Christian Barmore as the three starters.

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 133 overall / No. 12 SDE / No. 13 GA

Analysis: During his true freshman season, Justin Eboigbe started two games for the Crimson Tide while playing in 10 total. He finished with 10 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one quarterback hurry while being a strong part of the rotation.

With LaBryan Ray, Christian Barmore and DJ Dale expected to be the starters, expect players like Eboigbe and Byron Young, who both saw starts in 2019, to move back towards being part of the rotation. Either way, both players will continue to be an important part of Alabama’s defense.

Eboigbe is long at 6-foot-5 and has a frame that is ideal for a five-technique defensive end in a standard 3-4 defense. Expect him to eventually work his way into a permanent starting role sometime within the next couple of years.

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 108 overall / No. 6 SDE / No. 25 FLA

Analysis: After being a top 100 prospect coming out of IMG Academy in the 2018 recruiting cycle, Stephon Wynn Jr. didn’t see significant action during his first season on campus — mostly due to an injury. His second season on campus, however, was a bit more eventful.

Wynn played in nine games for the Crimson Tide in a rotational role, earning seven total tackles on the season. It remains to be see if his opportunities will continue to increase in 2020 given the strong rotation of players returning along the defensive line and the talented group of freshmen coming in, but expect to see the South Carolina native continue seeing snaps.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 89 LaBryan Ray

Redshirt junior DL LaBryan Ray is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

Class: Redshirt Junior

Hometown: Madison (Ala.)

High School: James Clemens High School

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 45 overall / No. 2 SDE / No. 1 ALA

Analysis: The 2019 season was supposed to be LaBryan Ray’s coming out party. After losing Quinnen Williams and Isaiah Buggs to the NFL, Ray was expected to team up with Raekwon Davis to give the Crimson Tide two veterans along its defensive line.

Unfortunately, a lower leg injured against South Carolina in Week 3 prevented that from happening, but 2020 could be a “run it back” situation for the former five-star defensive lineman.

Ray brings a complete skillset that includes length (6-foot-5), strength and athleticism which helps him be an impact player against the run and getting after the quarterback. The hope is that both he and Christian Barmore can provide Alabama with a much-needed interior pass rush.

If that duo can have any consistent success, it will go a long way in taking some of the pressure off of a young group of edge players who will be trying to gain experience early.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 88 Major Tennison

Redshirt junior TE Major Tennison is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / N/A overall / No. 15 TE / No. 43 TX

Analysis: Major Tennison finally saw his role increased during the 2019 season after spending his first couple years in a reserve role. On the year, the former four-star tight end played in all 13 games with one start.

Unfortunately, that playing time didn’t lead to a lot of statistical success, as Tennison only brought in three passes for 21 yards. He did, however, turn one of those receptions into a touchdown against Duke in the season opener.

It will be interesting to see how Tennison fits into Alabama’s plan this season. Miller Forristall and second-year player Jahleel Billingsley return as well, and North Carolina grad transfer Carl Tucker is also going to be heavily involved.

Will Tennison take a backseat to that trio? It’s entirely possible, but it might be a little premature to rule him out completely.
