Saints featured Michael Jackson songs in pregame warmups after Derek Carr fine

The Saints catered their Week 3 pregame playlist to feature multiple Michael Jackson songs after Derek Carr was fined for last week’s TD celebration:

Shoutout to the New Orleans Saints’ gameday operations crew.  After Derek Carr was fined last week for a celebration paying tribute to the late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson (which the NFL promoted for millions of views), the Saints featured multiple Jackson songs during pregame warmups before kickoff with the Philadelphia Eagles.

These included “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “Billie Jean,” which led to the amusement of many fans and media members alike. There was some alleged moonwalking from Philly reporters in the press box.

Carr ended up having to pay $14,069 for last week’s celebration, but maybe he will keep it going if he feels like having some fun and getting the fans hyped up each  week. Either way it was a fun gesture by the Saints.

NFL has gotten millions of views promoting Derek Carr’s TD celebration

The NFL has gotten millions of views promoting Derek Carr’s TD celebration on social media. They thanked him for it with a $14,069 fine:

This isn’t a good look for the NFL. The league has gotten millions of views promoting Derek Carr’s touchdown celebration against the Dallas Cowboys on social media, complete with an explanation for why he paid tribute to the late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson. Then the NFL thanked the New Orleans Saints quarterback for creating this highlight reel moment with a $14,069 fine.

On TikTok alone the clip has been viewed more than 267,000 times. It’s created even more engagement on Instagram with more than 1.6 million views. It’s since spread far and wide across the Internet as evidence that this 2024 Saints team is different from what fans have had to watch in recent years. And, sure, it’s a great clip. In his postgame press conference Carr joked that he borrowed Jackson’s choreography to remind his kids and younger teammates that he has some dance moves.

At the same time, the people issuing fines from the league office in New York are not the same people editing videos to post online every Sunday. Of course they’re going to react differently when a player grabs his crotch after scoring a touchdown and laughs about it after the game. But that doesn’t make this any less hypocritical. Company policy should be standard across departments. Either outlaw gestures like this (Carr wasn’t penalized for it during the game, by the way) or let it slide and get those clicks, reactions, and impressions online. Not even the NFL should get to have its cake and eat it too.

Report: Derek Carr fined $14,000 by NFL for Michael Jackson TD celebration

NBC Sports reports Derek Carr was fined $14,000 by the NFL for his Michael Jackson-inspired touchdown celebration against the Dallas Cowboys:

The No Fun League has struck again. NBC Sports’ Mike Florio reports that  the NFL has fined New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr a staggering $14,000 for his Michael Jackson dance-inspired touchdown celebration against the Dallas Cowboys last week. Florio noted that Carr was not penalized during the game.

Carr’s teammates loved it, but the league office in New York had a more mixed reception. Players grabbing their crotches have been fined before (notably Marshawn Lynch, who used that celebration against the Saints in  the playoffs) but NFL Network has used those same gestures for promotional advertising on highlight reels. The late “King of Pop” even performed at the Super Bowl with his signature choreography.

But it cost Carr $14,000. The NFL has found a way to have their cake and eat it, too. Because Carr restructured his contract this offseason to play on a veteran minimum salary in exchange for receiving a hefty signing bonus, he’s only getting $71,176 in weekly game checks during the season. So about a fifth of his Week 2 paycheck is going to cover this fine. That’s an expensive dance move. If the tradeoff is Carr keeps leading the offense to 40-point scoring outputs, though? He’ll have cause to celebrate.

WATCH: Travis Kelce debuts new touchdown dance at Chiefs training camp

Take a look at Travis Kelce’s latest touchdown celebration, which was on full display at #Chiefs training camp on Thursday.

Travis Kelce has become known for his bombastic touchdown celebrations in recent years, and as the Kansas City Chiefs embark on their title defense campaign in 2024, the All-Pro tight end is already preparing for more endzone antics.

During a practice session at training camp on Thursday, Kelce debuted a new dance after catching a pass from Patrick Mahomes in the red zone.

When he crossed the goal line for a touchdown, Kelce showed off what seemed to be a cowboy-inspired boogie, which may earn a place in his rotation of touchdown celebrations.

Take a look at this video of his new endzone dance, which was posted by the Chiefs’ official Twitter account:

Though Kelce didn’t seem to give this routine maximum effort on the practice fields in St. Joseph, fans in Kansas City should be on the lookout for an all-out performance of the jig during the regular season when he scores touchdowns.

Stephen Curry hits epic golf swing celebration after nailing 3-pointer against Milwaukee Bucks

Stephen Curry is just like us all.

Stephen Curry is just like us all.

Well, at least his love for golf.

The Golden State Warriors point guard, a four-time NBA champion, is an avid golfer. He has participated in Capital One’s The Match, and last year, he won the American Century Championship, a tournament where he also had a hole-in-one. He even competed in a Korn Ferry Tour event in 2017.

And just like other golfers, there’s never a bad time to practice your swing, including in the middle of a professional basketball game.

That’s what Curry did Wednesday night, playing on ESPN against the Milwaukee Bucks. In the first quarter, Curry hit a deep 3-pointer and celebrated by practicing his golf swing. Because of course.

If only we were as good at our day jobs as Curry is at his.

WATCH: Chiefs stars celebrate playoff win vs. Bills in locker room

The atmosphere in the #Chiefs’ locker room was electric after Kansas City’s win over the #Bills on Sunday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs earned a gritty road playoff win for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era on Sunday night when they traveled to Orchard Park, New York to face off against the Buffalo Bills.

While the outcome of the matchup was decided by a missed field goal by Bills kicker Tyler Bass in the game’s final minutes, Kansas City put together a dominant performance against Buffalo in all four quarters.

Chiefs players were on cloud nine in the locker room after their hard-fought victory and were seen celebrating their latest accomplishment in a video posted to Twitter by the team’s social media team.

Travis Kelce, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Drue Tranquill, and Patrick Mahomes can all be seen embracing and congratulating each other on a job well done, clearly excited that they had pulled off the playoff upset.

Their work is far from over, though, as Kansas City is now set to face the Baltimore Ravens in their sixth-consecutive AFC Championship Game appearance next week.

Twitter reacts to Jason Kelce’s outrageous celebration after Travis Kelce touchdown

Twitter reacted to Jason Kelce’s outrageous celebration after his brother, #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, scored a touchdown against the #Bills.

The Kansas City Chiefs put up an outstanding offensive effort against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs and took an early lead when quarterback Patrick Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for a touchdown in the second quarter.

While Highmark Stadium was relatively quiet after the impressive scoring play, the suite occupied by Kelce’s family and friends erupted with cheers.

One celebration from the group stood out from others, though, and took the internet by storm just before halftime.

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, Travis’ brother, was seen shirtless, letting out a bellowing roar in support of his younger sibling with a brew in hand.

The Kelce brothers are one of the most beloved institutions in the NFL, and fans were quick to hop on social media to comment on Jason’s larger-than-life jubilation after the touchdown score.

Check out some of Twitter’s top reactions to the outrageous celebration below:

Cowboys won’t be fined for celebration that cost Michael Thomas $30,000

The Cowboys reportedly won’t be fined for a celebration that cost Michael Thomas $30,000:

Here’s a double standard from the league office. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissesro reports that the Dallas Cowboys will not be fined for their celebratory antics in their Thanksgiving Day win over the Washington Commanders — with players having stashed turkey legs inside Salvation Army kettles near the end zones to enjoy after scoring a big touchdown.

That’s the good news. This celebration didn’t hurt or upset anyone; if anything, it led to an outpouring of fan engagement on social media. Using props in celebrations like this may be against the rules, but it’s not harmful, and it’s good that the players were not punished for it.

Now the bad news. It’s a double standard by the NFL to not penalize anyone with fines after the league office took $30,000 from Michael Thomas. The New Orleans Saints wide receiver paid tribute to Joe Horn’s iconic cell phone celebration in a 2018 win against the Los Angeles Rams, having hidden flip phones under each goalpost to poste with in the event of a score. His game-winning touchdown catch met the criteria, and it was a widely-lauded moment.

But the NFL didn’t think so. And it’s not right for commissioner Roger Goodell and his decision-makers in New York to punish some players and let others get off scot-free. Unless they’re giving the green light for props in celebrations by not issuing any fines to Cowboys players, the league office should be consistent with this policy. It’s great that no one in Dallas lost money because of it. It’s a shame that Thomas did, and that other players likely will in the future. Either have the policy and enforce it fairly, or don’t bother with it all.

Former Wisconsin RB James White had a critique of the Badgers’ postgame Axe celebration

Former Wisconsin RB James White had a critique of the Badgers’ postgame Axe celebration

Wisconsin defeated rival Minnesota 28-14 Saturday to reclaim Paul Bunyan’s Axe, finish the regular season 7-5 and carry positive momentum into bowl season.

After what has been a disappointing year one under Luke Fickell, Saturday represented a step in the right direction with this season winding down.

That, and it was the team’s best all-around effort of the year by a long shot. The offense found success through the air and on the ground, Braelon Allen was terrific and the defense shut down Athan Kaliakmanis and the Minnesota offense. In many ways, Saturday’s performance was what we expected to see all year from Fickell’s team.

Nevertheless, escaping a year with a win over Minnesota makes the early-season struggles feel much better. Especially given this was the Badgers’ first road win over Minnesota since 2019, and the first win over the Golden Gophers since 2020.

The postgame celebration was expectedly quite rowdy:

Wisconsin legend James White, now an analyst on Big Ten Network, did have one critique of that celebration, however:

White went 4-0 against Minnesota during his time in Madison. He is more than qualified to take a sarcastic shot at the Badgers’ chopping mechanics.

If that’s the conversation postgame, it means the four quarters of football went pretty well.

Jimmy Graham shares his thoughts on the ‘Jimmy Graham Rule’

Jimmy Graham’s iconic touchdown celebration has been banned since he last dunked on a goalpost, but he’s hopeful it will change someday | @southexclusives

Everyone remembers Jimmy Graham’s signature touchdown celebration from his first stint with the New Orleans Saints — dunking the football over the goalpost’s crossbar. He infamously bent the goalpost in a 2013 celebration versus the Atlanta Falcons. That led to a stoppage in play, with the NFL taking that celebration out of the game. What was once a popular celebration is now a 15-yard penalty and $5,606 fine. He took time this week to reflect on the “Jimmy Graham Rule” and his place in NFL history upon returning to New Orleans.

Graham does take pride in the fact the rule is nicknamed after him. He joked that he “ended all the fun for everyone with the goalpost”, but wears it as a badge of honor. He hopes that one day “the NFL changes the whole penalty and makes it to where if you don’t tear down, nothing will happen.”

In his first score back with the team in preseason, Graham went up for the dunk, but stopped himself. It was a nice throwback to the days when a Graham touchdown catch was a regular occurrence. It’s a new day now, and Graham won’t celebrate his touchdowns with a dunk any longer. The celebration is too costly to his wallet and to the team, due to penalty.
