Steelers WR George Pickens fined for taunting vs Bengals

George Pickens drew a big fine for a small play in last week’s game.

Last week Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens had his best game as a professional and was living his best life on the field. According to the NFL, he was living a little too good as they handed down a big fine to Pickens for a taunt during one of his two long touchdowns.

Pickens caught touchdowns of 86 and 66 yards on Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals. On the 66-yarder, Pickens turned back to stare down the Cincinnati defense the last three yards of his run and it cost him $16,391 for it.

This week Pickens and the rest of the Steelers hope to see more of him celebrating huge touchdowns as the Steelers take on the Seattle Seahawks in a must-win game. On the season, Pickens has 56 catches for 1,0009 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. Pickens also has one rushing touchdown.

Vikings safety fined for hit vs. Bears

Leading with your head on a hit will get you a fine from the NCAA

One thing that has been consistent this season is the National Football League has been fining players for using their helmets when hitting on the field.

According to The Star Tribune’s Andrew Krammer, Minnesota Vikings safety Josh Metellus $11,167 for unnecessary roughness for a hit on Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

Here is the hit, which looks pretty innocuous.

The hit doesn’t look like much. He hits Fields in the midsection, but how he hits him is the cause of the fine.

Metellus uses his helmet and head as a battering ram, which is something the NFL is blatantly trying to get players to stop doing. Harrison Smith was fined $21,855 for a hit in week three against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The NFL will continue to fine players for using their helmet as a battering ram in terms of player safety. This is the third fine on a Vikings player this season with Justin Jefferson also getting one for a touchdown celebration against the Carolina Panthers.

Colts’ Zack Moss fined for dunking football in TD celebration

Zack Moss’ second TD celebration hit his pocket.

Indianapolis Colts running back Zack Moss was fined $6,330 for unsportsmanlike conduct during the Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans.

After scoring his second rushing touchdown against the AFC South rivals to give the Colts the lead in the third quarter, Moss celebrated by dunking the football through the goalposts.

That has become an instant fine throughout the league since Jimmy Graham knocked the goalpost off balance in 2013. The league has allowed players to jump and throw the ball over the crossbar, but it’s a fine if they make contact.

Moss was capping off a historic day for his career. He totaled a career-high 165 rushing yards against a Titans defense that hadn’t allowed 100 rushing yards to a team in 10 consecutive games or a 100-yard rusher in 20 consecutive games.

Even with the return of Jonathan Taylor, Moss is still going to be involved, especially as the former works his way back into action.

This marks the third week in a row a Colts player has been fined after Kwity Paye (Week 3) and E.J. Speed (Week 4) got hit with fines as well.

Harrison Smith fined for hit vs Chargers

Smith was the latest player to be fined for a helmet to helmet hit

On Saturday, Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith was fined $21,855 for a hit that he placed on Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen. The fine was reported by ESPN’s Kevin Seifert.

In his tweet reporting the hit, Seifert included a clip of the reported hit, which directly shows that Harrison led with his head.

This has become a point of emphasis for the NFL this season, as they are trying to reduce the amount of head injuries in the sport.

The fines have been large so far this season, including Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren incurring a fine that was nearly an entire game check.

The amounts don’t seem to be consistent at the moment, but how much they are varied are likely attributed to how the player uses his helmet on the hit. Smith has the opportunity to appeal the fine if he so chooses.

Fines will become a common occurrence and likely won’t be stopping anytime soon.

NFL fines Packers rookie LB Quay Walker $13K for shoving Lions trainer in Week 18

Packers rookie Quay Walker was fined $13,261 – or the amount for a first offense of unnecessary roughness – for pushing a Lions trainer in Week 18.

Green Bay Packers rookie linebacker Quay Walker was fined a little over $13,000 by the NFL for shoving a member of the Detroit Lions training staff in the fourth quarter of the Packers’ season-finale loss at Lambeau Field, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The exact total of the fine – $13,261 – is the amount for a first offense of unnecessary roughness. Walker was penalized on the play and ejected from the contest.

The Lions trainer was attempting to assist in the care of injured running back D’Andre Swift, who was hurt on a tackle by Jarran Reed.

Despite being a repeat offender of contact against non-uniformed team personnel, Walker will not be suspended. The rookie was also ejected for pushing a member of the Bills on the sideline during Week 8 in Buffalo.

Packers Wire highlighted the good and bad of Walker’s rookie season earlier this week. Discipline on the field is certainly one area where Walker needs improvement entering his second season.

Rookie Devonte Wyatt, who also made contact with the trainer, was not fined.

2 Broncos players elevated for Sunday; 1 player fined by NFL

The Broncos promoted OL Quinn Bailey to the 53-man roster and elevated OL Netane Muti and LB Harvey Langi to the game-day roster.

The Denver Broncos made several practice squad moves ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

First, the Broncos promoted offensive lineman Quinn Bailey from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Denver then elevated fellow offensive lineman Netane Muti and inside linebacker Harvey Langi to the game-day roster from the practice squad.

Bailey is now on the active roster while Muti and Langi are set to revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Bailey and Muti can provide more depth on the offensive line this week if guard Dalton Risner (shoulder/back) is not cleared to play. Risner is listed as questionable on the team’s injury report.

Elsewhere on the injury front, the Broncos announced Saturday that defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike has been added to the injury report due to an illness. Uwazurike is now listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.

Broncos buzz: Denver linebacker Alex Singleton was fined $6,194 for an unnecessary roughness penalty against the Baltimore Ravens, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Singleton totaled 16 tackles in Baltimore.

Broncos DB Justin Simmons fined $10,609 for taunting in London

Broncos safety Justin Simmons was fined $10,609 for taunting in London.

Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons helped secure a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London last week, but the victory came at a price for the defensive back.

Simmons was fined $10,609 by the NFL after he was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct in the first quarter against Jacksonville. Officials flagged Simmons for taunting after he made a tackle for a two-yard loss.

Simmons made up for that penalty eight plays later when he intercepted a Trevor Lawrence pass in the end zone to prevent a Jaguars touchdown. That interception kept the Broncos within seven points of Jacksonville in a game that was ultimately decided by just four points.

Simmons ended the game with five tackles, one pass breakup and one crucial interception, helping Denver secure a 21-17 win at Wembley Stadium.

The Broncos returned home after their win in London and received a much-needed bye on Sunday. They will go on the road to face the Tennessee Titans next week.

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton fined for penalty in Week 2

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton was fined $10,609 for an unnecessary roughness penalty in Week 2.

The NFL fined Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton $10,609 for an unnecessary roughness penalty against the Houston Texans in Week 2, according to USA TODAY’s Parker Gabriel.

Sutton was penalized after a late out-of-bounds hit against Houston. Besides that penalty, Sutton had a great game against the Texans, catching seven passes for 122 yards in a 16-9 victory.

“His penalty on the sideline [was something that] he regrets big-time, but you can see the competitor nature,” offensive coordinator Justin Outten said Thursday.

“Every time he catches an explosive pass, he’s getting up, he’s competing. You can’t coach that, that is something that is drilled into you, that’s something that is ingrained in you and it just continues. That a guy in that room that’s a big leader and we are leaning on him in the skill position.”

Sutton will aim to have another big game when the Broncos host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football in Week 3.

Jaguars WR Marvin Jones Jr. fined for taunting Colts

A taunting penalty called on Jaguars receiver Marvin Jones Jr. reportedly cost him a decent chunk of change.

A 15-yard taunting penalty picked up by Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. in Week 2 also cost him a decent chunk of change.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Jones received a $10,609 fine from the league this week. A second taunting penalty this season would result in a $15,914 fine for Jones, per the collective bargaining agreement.

Jones, 32, picked up the penalty after taking hits from a pair of Indianapolis Colts defenders that knocked his helmet off and drew an unnecessary roughness penalty. Jones stood up, flexed, and was later shown on the broadcast yelling at the Colts players.

Taunting called on Jones resulted in offsetting penalties, but didn’t slow the Jaguars drive which ended with a touchdown eight plays later.

Jones, who signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the Jaguars last year, finished the game with three receptions for 33 yards. He has seven receptions for 71 through the first two games of the season.

It’s unknown if Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin was fined for the unnecessary roughness penalty.

Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill fined for peace sign on touchdown vs. Bills

Back-to-back weeks with a fine from the NFL for #Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill caught another fine from the NFL this week.

Last week, Hill was fined over $12,000 for using a pair of cheerleader pom-poms as a prop in a post-touchdown celebration against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round. This week, Hill is being fined over $10,000 for something that happened before he even scored in the divisional round against the Buffalo Bills.

On Hill’s 64-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, he threw up his signature peace sign to a Buffalo defender before he’d even run by him. The NFL took notice and fined him for taunting. We expected this could be a frequent issue for Hill under the NFL’s new taunting emphasis, but surprisingly, this is his first time being fined for the peace sign this season.

Hopefully, Hill can replicate what he did after last week’s fine. His foundation challenged Chiefs Kingdom to raise the same amount as the fine for the pom-pom celebration to benefit the homeless.

Not only did fans raise the amount, but they surpassed it with over $13,000 raised to create supply-filled backpacks to hand out to the homeless in coordination with the Kansas City fire and police departments.

As it turns out, Hill is spreading peace and love on and off the field.
