Ohio State offensive lineman misses practice

Ohio State offensive lineman misses practice #GoBucks

Ohio State football kicked off its first day of camp on Thursday and most of the focus was on the quarterback battle between Devin Brown and incoming Kansas State transfer, Will Howard. A bit more focus was spent on the receivers and star freshman, Jeremiah Smith, but what should be making more news is the absence of a returning starter on the offensive line.

Carson Hinzman missed the first day of camp due to an “illness” according to head coach, Ryan Day. Hinzman is not expected to be the starter this season due to the arrival of incoming Alabama transfer, Seth McLaughlin, but that doesn’t mean he won’t have a role or won’t even start at another spot.

Although I am confident the Buckeyes will be rock solid at offensive line, most pundits view this positional group a mystery and a guy like Hinzman could use every rep.

5 stars: The best and worst of Ohio State’s win over Youngstown State

Who did well and who didn’t for the Buckeyes against Youngstown State? #GoBucks

Even though Ohio State football has started their season 2-0, it very much seems like the 35-7 win over Youngstown State was culmination of an underwhelming beginning.

Yes, a win is a win, and the Buckeyes will have a chance to get to 3-0 next week, but, sometimes those wins don’t always feel the same. This one felt like Ohio State should have won by more than the final margin, especially considering YSU’s level of talent compared to the home teams.

However, there were some very good performances, 5 stars, and some not so good, 1 star, in today’s win. Find out below who earn what distinction for Ohio State today.

Current Ohio State interior offensive linemen ranked by the 247Sports composite

Current Ohio State interior offensive linemen ranked by the 247Sports composite #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team has 18 offensive linemen on scholarship and six arrived in Columbus, Ohio, as interior offensive linemen according to 247Sports. We previously provided the list of players ranked as offensive tackles for 247Sports as well as the players listed as guards, but the following are players that held the interior offensive lineman designation.

Now the Ohio State offensive line is in a state of flux, so some of these players may wind up on the interior, and some players that are listed could be moved outside. We will just move forward with how 247Sports had them listed as recruits.

The number one player on this list shouldn’t be surprising as few interior offensive linemen came into Columbus, Ohio, with the type of hype Donovan Jackson did and now he will be expected to be a stud on the 2023 offensive line. Here is a ranking of the scholarship interior offensive linemen on the roster based on their 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Ohio State makes top 7 for Wisconsin offensive lineman

He would look good in Scarlet and Gray #GoBucks

The Buckeyes are always looking to secure top offensive line talent and have had some very good luck recently finding that in Wisconsin. Typically a very, pro-Badger area, last year [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] went into the state and signed [autotag]Carson Hinzman[/autotag], who has a bright future for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag].

Day is looking to steal another offensive lineman from under the Badgers’ nose, [autotag]Donovan Harbour[/autotag]. Today the 6-foot-5-inch, 310-pound offensive tackle announced his top seven schools, which consisted of the Badgers, Penn State, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida and the Buckeyes. He is viewed as one of the top offensive line prospects in the country, and it’s good news that the Buckeyes have made the cut.

There are just three commits for the Buckeyes in the 2024 cycle, [autotag]Jeremiah Smith[/autotag], [autotag]Ian Moore[/autotag] and [autotag]Garrett Stover[/autotag]. Harbour would be a great addition to this group: Adding elite tackles is always a good idea.

Ohio State football recruiting class of 2022 scouting report: Carson Hinzman

Ohio State football recruiting class of 2022 scouting report: Carson Hinzman #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program had a consensus top-five class in the country for 2022 and was considered the No. 1 class in the Big Ten by a wide margin. The receiving 2022 offensive line is not short on star power, but one young gun may see action sooner rather than later.

It should be noted for those that are not familiar, recruiting classes are not like NFL draft classes. Many of these players will not see time as freshmen and will likely be redshirted. It’s also true that in the age of the transfer portal it is likely several players from this class will not be here at the end.

I wanted to at least take a dive into some of the top studs and we’ll start at the top of the recruiting class with interior offensive lineman, Carson Hinzman and we have already previously dived into C.J. HicksDevin BrownKenyatta JacksonOmari AborKaleb BrownKyion Grayes, Gabe PowersTegra Tshabola, Caleb Burton and Kojo Antwi.

Ohio State freshman offensive lineman Carson Hinzman to wear a coveted number as a Buckeye

Should Ohio State just go ahead and “retire” No. 75?

When you really think about it, the No. 75 should probably have been retired by the Ohio State program. However, it’s not, and that’s good news for freshman offensive tackle Carson Hinzman. According to a Twitter graphic, the freshman from Hammond, Wisconsin shared, he’s decided to wear the coveted No. 75 at least to start his career in Columbus.

So what’s the big deal about No. 75? Well, arguably the best offensive lineman in Buckeye history donned No. 75, the one — the only — Orlando Pace. Not only did Pace have a decorated career in college, he followed it up as a Hall of Famer in the NFL’s class of 2016.

Now, Hinzman will sport the same number and had a shout-out to Pace on Twitter Tuesday.

The most recent player to wear No. 75 was, of course, Thayer Munford, another offensive tackle who graduated from the program this season. He donned the number for four years at Ohio State and it looks like the torch will be passed to Hinzman to live up to.

Carson Hinzman officially signs with Ohio State

An offensive lineman from Wisconsin is now official! #GoBucks #NSD

It’s national signing day, and for the Ohio State football team, there shouldn’t be a whole lot of drama. There are two players that have verbally committed that are supposed to sign Wednesday, all others signed their national letter of intent back in December, with eleven of them already on campus plugged into the football machine that is Ohio State.

The first bit of good news on that front is that four-star offensive lineman Carson Hinzman has been officially inked Wednesday morning. Out of Hammond, Wisconsin, Hinzman is ranked as the No. 9 interior offensive lineman and 172nd overall prospect in the 2022 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Hinzman spoke to Buckeyes Wire earlier this month to explain his decision of picking the Buckeyes over his home state Wisconsin Badgers.

“I went through pros and cons and talked it through with my parents, Hinzman told Buckeyes Wire. “I had to think about what Ohio State can do for me even beyond football, and what Wisconsin can do. Honestly, just looking at the stuff, Ohio State came out on top. I hate to say it was a selfish decision, but I just had to do what was best for me, and in the end, that was Ohio State for what they offer.”

Congrats to Hinzman and we can’t wait to see what he’ll mean to this Ohio State team in the future. We feel pretty good about a guy that grew up on a farm all of his life and comes out of a state that grows pass and run blockers next to cheese and brats.

Buckeyes Wire Exclusive: New offensive line commit Carson Hinzman discusses why he chose Ohio State over Wisconsin, vows to beat Michigan

Recent Ohio State offensive lineman commit, Caron Hinzman, sat down with Buckeyes Wire to talk about his decision-making process and more. #GoBucks

It’s the offseason of Ohio State football folks. It’s a little depressing, but it also means we get to do other neat things like project ahead to next year, make some zany predictions, and talk to recruits and personalities involved with Ohio State.

The latest in those efforts comes from a recent Ohio State commitment to the 2022 recruiting class, 4-star offensive lineman Carson Hinzman out of Hammond, Wisconsin. His decision to back the U-Haul up to the banks of the Olentangy is a big one, especially when you consider that not many offensive linemen from Wisconsin make it too far from Madison.

Hinzman verbally committed to OSU on January 4, and we caught up with him after the All-American Bowl this past weekend to touch on the process by which he made his decision, his thoughts on Michigan, and much, much more — including the impact he’d like to make both on and off the field.

Let’s get to it.

BOOM! Four-Star offensive lineman, Carson Hinzman commits to Ohio State

Ohio State steals four-star offensive lineman from the state of Wisconsin! #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team just stole a good one from the state of Wisconsin. The Badgers and the Buckeyes were seen as the top two players in the Carson Hinzman sweepstakes, but most thought that it would be a huge upset for Ryan Day to sway Hinzman to Columbus. The 6-foot, 4-inch, interior lineman is the No. 6 rated offensive lineman in the 2022 recruiting class according to 247Sports composite rankings. The Hammond, Wisconsin native is the No. 2 ranked lineman in the Dairy State.

This is a pretty big haul considering Ohio State didn’t have an interior offensive lineman in this current class. It’s an even bigger deal when considering the fact that the Buckeyes basically started two tackles at the guard positions in the 2021 season. It will also be the first time in 50 years that a football player hailing from Wisconsin will dawn the scarlet and gray.

Hinzman’s commitment gives Ohio State 21 commits in the 2022 class, which includes transfer DeaMonte Trayanum from Arizona State.  The Buckeye’s class currently sits at No. 4 according to 247Sports and is continuing to rise.

In-state lineman Carson Hinzman commits to Ohio State

In-state offensive lineman Carson Hinzman announces commitment to Ohio State.

Four-star interior offensive lineman Carson Hinzman from Hammond (Wisc.) has officially committed to The Ohio State Buckeyes.

Wisconsin put up a hard fought battle against Ohio State to secure Hinzman’s services, but ultimately couldn’t close the deal.

One can’t help but wonder about the timing of the commitment coming the day after Joe Rudolph officially left for Virginia Tech.

Hinzman is the 134th ranked player in the nation, the 6th best IOL, and the 2nd ranked player in the state of Wisconsin.

Hinzman finished with an accomplished high school resume:

  • 7x First Team All-Conference
  • 6x All Region
  • 5x First Team All-State(1x honorable mention)
  • Def. P.O.Y.
  • Middle Border P.O.Y.
  • All-State Academic Winner

Carson Hinzman had an offer list that consisted of Wisconsin, Ohio State, Alabama, Notre Dame, LSU, Auburn, Iowa and countless others.

This is a tough recruiting loss for the Badgers who already lost out on in-state four star linemen Billy Schrauth in the same recruiting cycle.

It’s always imperative to the success of the program to keep their in-state talent home, so this one stings a little.

Carson Hinzman will now join one of the most talent rich programs in the country, who have gone 44-5 under head coach Ryan Day.
