Panthers vs. Redskins: 3 keys to a Week 13 win over Washington

Here are three keys to avoiding what would be an embarrassing upset.

The Panthers are considered big favorites heading into today’s home game against the Redskins. As bad as Washington looks this year, every NFL team is a threat if you don’t take them seriously.

Here are three keys to avoiding what would be an embarrassing upset.

1. Contain Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice

Peterson is now long past his prime when he was the most dynamic running back in the entire NFL and the last to win the MVP award. That doesn’t mean he can’t hurt you, though. The Panthers found that out the hard way in last year’s loss when Peterson ran for 97 yards on just 17 carries. This season, teams have been able to contain him to just 4.1 yards per rush and only one touchdown. Coach Ron Rivera shouldn’t hesitate to load up the box against Peterson and Derris Guice on early downs and force their rookie QB Dwayne Haskins (who has a pitiful 13.7 QBR) to beat them.

2. Avoid turnovers

Underdogs and long shots like the ‘Skins need to win the turnover battle to have any chance when they’re this over-matched. There is no clear favorite in this particular area of the game. Both teams come into Week 13 with an even takeaway/giveaway ratio. Kyle Allen took care of the ball last week (no picks or fumbles). He’ll need to keep that going and especially avoid throwing picks in the red zone as he has a few too many times this year.

3. Feed No. 22

The Panthers have to be mindful of Christian McCaffrey’s workload, especially now that the playoffs are out of reach. However, until they establish a significant lead, the offense should run through him. Washington ranks No. 21 in rushing defense DVOA and has allowed 137.6 rushing yards per game this year – only four teams have given up more on the ground.

UGA football great after Tech win: ‘We still run this state’

UGA Football great Thomas Davis gave a shout out to the Georgia Bulldogs after beating Georgia tech again

On Saturday, Georgia beat rival Georgia Tech 52-7 for the 16th time in the last 19 meetings.

The Dawgs move to 11-1 on the season and will have a tough matchup with LSU for the SEC Championship, which for Georgia will be a College Football Playoff play-in game.

One former Bulldog who was proud to see his alma mater take home the Governor’s Cup once again is Thomas Davis, who is in his 15th NFL season and now with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Davis was a monster at Georgia, and though he made his NFL earnings as a linebacker for the Carolina Panthers, he actually played safety in Athens before becoming a first round pick. One of the hardest hitters in school history, Davis was a two-time All-SEC selection, making the second team in 2003 and the first team in 2004. Also, if that’s not enough, the dude has come back from three torn ACLs in the same knee. And you know who he credits his perseverance to? UGA.

NFL lays big fine on Panthers S Tre Boston for hit on Ted Ginn Jr.

This wasn’t hard to see coming. Boston himself predicted that he’d get fined by the NFL a few days ago.

Cameron Jordan isn’t the only guy who got fined today. According to Jourdan Rodrigue at the Athletic, Panthers safety Tre Boston has been hit with a substantial $56,126 fine for his penalty against Saints wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. in last week’s loss.

This wasn’t hard to see coming. Boston himself predicted that he’d get fined by the NFL a few days ago.

The fine itself is no great surprise, but the amount seems a bit excessive considering Jordan’s fine for punching Kyle Allen in the head was only $38,602.

How much the league fines players has always been capricious. Name power and position seem to be considerable factors. If Jordan’s hit on Kyle Allen had actually been on a star like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, you can bet his fine would have been heftier. Whereas if it had been on Cam Newton, a flag might not have been thrown at all.

Safeties like Boston seem to get the shaft more than every other position given the nature of what they have to do to compete. This was Boston’s second fine of the 2019 season. He picked up another one for a hit on 49ers tight end George Kittle earlier this year.

Cameron Jordan fined by NFL for Week 12 penalties vs. Panthers

Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan was fined by the NFL for his Week 12 penalties vs. Panthers.

Cameron Jordan remains the biggest villain in the NFC South as far as the Panthers are concerned. In last week’s win for New Orleans, he was flagged twice for unnecessary roughness penalties against the Panthers. Today, Jordan is paying a price for those fouls.

According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the league has fined Jordan a total of $38,602 for those infractions.

The worst of it was this late hit on Kyle Allen, where Jordan lays a forearm shiver to Allen’s helmet.

Jordan claimed he was trying to punch the ball out, but it’s not a very convincing argument considering the whistle had already blown.

The Panthers haven’t seen the last of Jordan this year. They’ll play the Saints again in the last game of the regular season. However, New Orleans has already secured the NFC South title with a Thanksgiving win over Atlanta. It’s their third consecutive division championship.

NFL fines Cameron Jordan $38K for penalties vs. Panthers

New Orleans Saints captain Cameron Jordan was fined more than $38,000 for two unnecessary roughness penalties against the Carolina Panthers.

The NFL fiend New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan $38,602 for two personal fouls he committed during last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Saturday.

Jordan was penalized for striking Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen in the face mask after the whistle, a mistake he later owned up to. As Jordan explained it, he was trying to force a fumble out of Allen while he was being spun to the ground by teammate Demario Davis. The Saints’ defensive captain acknowledged that he has to play the game with better awareness and avoid hurting his team with senseless mistakes like that, promising to make up for it in his next outing.

And he did just that in Thursday night’s game with the Atlanta Falcons. Jordan accounted for four of the Saints’ nine sacks on the evening, setting a new personal-best for a single game. He has logged 13.5 sacks on the 2019 season and now ranks second-best in the Saints record books with 85 sacks, trailing only Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Rickey Jackson (115). Expect more big plays out of Jordan as the Saints pursue the top seed in the NFC playoff picture.

Prediction

Panthers 30, Redskins 13

Moneyline (?)

The Panthers (-500) are a huge favorite against Washington based on matchup and Washington’s 1-4 road record. Washington’s numerous offensive line issues, in particular, will loom large.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Panthers to win returns a profit of $2 with a victory. It’s too much chalk.

Against the Spread (?)

Taking the PANTHERS to win and cover the 9.5 points is the play. The -115 odds represent excellent value when compared to the moneyline. Carolina will need to win by at least 10 points.

Over/Under (?)

The OVER 39.5 (-105) is the bet here. The Redskins averaging 13 points per game makes this a reasonable wager only because Carolina could score 30-plus this week (31 last week against New Orleans).

Panthers K Graham Gano says he fractured his femur in practice 1 year ago today

Gano says he still kicked that weekend against Tampa Bay.

Panthers kicker Graham Gano has missed the entire 2019 season with a mysterious “leg injury” that we’ve never really heard the nature of. Gano spilled the beans today on Twitter, saying he fractured his femur at practice exactly one year ago. Gano says he still kicked that weekend against Tampa Bay.

Ouch.

With Gano out for the year, Carolina has been rolling with the rookie Joey Slye. He got off to a hot start, but he started struggling in London against the Buccaneers and bottomed out on Sunday in New Orleans. Slye’s field goal percentage is down to 73.1%. He has shown impressive range though, connecting on six of nine attempts from 50 yards or more.

Nevertheless, this week the Panthers might decide to make a change. They recently added former Browns kicker Greg Joseph to their practice squad. Ron Rivera has not announced a change as of yet, though.

Looking ahead, Gano might be back in the lineup next season. He still has two years left on his contract.

Panthers place RB Jordan Scarlett on IR, promote OL from practice squad

The Carolina Panthers have placed rookie RB Jordan Scarlett on injured reserve and called up OL Brad Lundblade from the practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers have placed rookie running back Jordan Scarlett on injured reserve and called up offensive lineman Brad Lundblade from the practice squad, per Max Henson.

Scarlett was a head-scratching fifth-round pick for the Panthers in this year’s draft. With Christian McCaffrey getting so much playing time we doubted that Scarlett would see enough snaps to justify that pick. In the end, he only played 121 snaps, with just seven of them coming on offense.

Scarlett joins Cam Newton, Kawann Short, Dontari Poe, Greg Van Roten and several others on the IR list.

Lundblade (6-foot-3, 305 pounds) played his college football at Oklahoma State. He could see a lot of snaps this week considering the state of Carolina’s offensive line. To recap, Greg Little is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury, Van Roten is out and Taylor Moton is questionable.

Lundblade is the second offensive lineman they have called up from the practice squad this week. Garrett McGhin is the other.

Panthers injury updates: Taylor Moton, Eric Reid questionable for Week 13

The Carolina Panthers’ offensive line has been banged up all year.

The Carolina Panthers’ offensive line has been banged up all year. That trend will likely continue into this week’s game against Washington.

Second-round pick Greg Little has been listed as doubtful for Sunday with an ankle injury. If he can’t play, expect sixth-rounder Dennis Daley to take his place on the blind side.

The other tackle spot could also be a problem. Taylor Moton is listed as questionable with a knee injury. Daryl Williams has previous experience playing right tackle, but it didn’t go well. The Panthers are also down a left guard with Greg Van Roten on injured reserve. It will be interesting to see who the Panthers put up front.

Safety Eric Reid is also questionable. He’s dealing with ankle and shoulder problems.

The only player who has been officially ruled out is rookie running back Jordan Scarlett. Expect former Bears running back Mike Davis to be active.

How on Earth will the Redskins slow down Christian McCaffrey?

The Redskins have a huge challenge on their hands as they look to slow down Christian McCaffrey on Sunday and get their third win.

For a Washington Redskins defense that has actually found some success in the past few weeks, Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers looms large. It stands as quite possibly the toughest test they’ve faced in a while, and it’s all due to one player.

Christian McCaffrey, a powerful and shift running back who is running away with the fantasy football MVP award.

So far this season, McCaffrey has amassed 1,123 rushing yards and 586 receiving yards, making for a league-leading 1,709 total yards at an average of 155 yards from scrimmage per game. Week in and week out, he has gone up against defenses that are scheming to nullify is production, and the rest of the league is still waiting on a blueprint to stopping him.

So how will Washington attempt to slow him down? The same way they did in last year’s 20-17 victory over the Panthers — by stacking the box and blitzing the back.

In an impressive late-season victory a year ago, the Redskins were able to hold McCaffrey to 20 yards on eight rushes and 46 yards on seven receptions. They were able to be so successful because edge rusher Ryan Kerrigan was stout against the run, and Daron Payne muddled up rushing lanes in the middle. According to Mark Bullock at The Athletic, Washington also brought an extra man into the box to offer some run support and spy McCaffrey out of the backfield, a role that will likely be played by Landon Collins on Sunday.

Washington also routinely sent a blitzer on passing plays, causing McCaffrey to stay and help pick it up before releasing on his routes and putting a linebacker in a tough position to cover him out of the backfield.

Blitzing the back was successful for the Redskins against McCaffrey last year, limiting the number of times he was able to work out into a route or at the very least, delaying his release. Expect them to try some different blitzes with the same intent on Sunday.

Will it be just as effective this time around? Maybe, maybe not. McCaffrey is another year older and his level of play has gone up significantly since last season, but it’s worth a shot.

If the Redskins can slow down McCaffrey, then they have a chance to slow down the Panthers and pick up their third win of the season. If not…it could be an ugly afternoon.
