Marshon Lattimore, Deonte Harris DNP on Saints injury report

The initial New Orleans Saints injury report for their Week 12 game with the Carolina Panthers rested Marshon Lattimore and Deonte Harris.

Despite being short-handed in Week 11, the New Orleans Saints had multiple role players step up into starting roles and help the team to a 34-17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, in Week 12, the Carolina Panthers will visit the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the third NFC South matchup in as many weeks for the Saints.

Last week, cornerback Marshon Lattimore and kick-return specialist Deonte Harris were both out with hamstring injuries, and those ailments held them out of practice again on Wednesday. Week 12’s injury report will shed some light on the possibility of return for either of the two electric playmakers. Unfortunately, left guard Andrus Peat will miss at least a month with a broken arm. Tight end Josh Hill, who suffered a concussion last week, was a limited participant.

The injury reports published by the Saints and the Panthers on Wednesday are the initial reports for the week. A second, updated report will be released on Thursday. The final injury report with game status for certain players will be issued on Friday. Daily changes in practice participation are noted in bold text.

Panthers Week 12 injury report: 3 players questionable vs. Saints

Here’s a look at the team’s Week 12 injury report, which is much shorter than it has been recently.

This season, the Panthers’ injury reports have been mostly disastrous. Critical players have missed a lot of time, especially the offensive and defensive lines and in the secondary. This week, things may finally be looking up.

Here’s a look at the team’s Week 12 injury report, which is much shorter than it has been recently.

Player Injury Wed Thu Fri Status
S Eric Reid Knee Limited Limited Full
CB Ross Cockrell Quad DNP DNP Limited Questionable
DT Gerald McCoy Knee DNP Limited Full
OT Dennis Daley Groin Limited Limited Full Questionable
OLB Brian Burns Wrist Full Full Full
LB Shaq Thompson Ankle Limited Limited Full
OT Greg Little Knee Full Full Questionable

As for who’s not listed, seeing neither Greg Little nor Christian McCaffrey’s names here is a very positive development.

McCoy’s knee is nothing to worry about and he has been resting on Wednesdays regularly. He hasn’t missed a game and has been Carolina’s most consistent defensive lineman this season. Cockrell’s absence proved to be a bigger deal than expected last week against the Falcons, so we will keep an eye on his status.

The major question mark is going to be Daley, who has played far better at left tackle than anybody else this year. They need him in the lineup.

Update:

This is about as healthy as the Panthers have been all year. Nobody has been ruled out and three players are listed as questionable. Two of them are left tackles, though. Ron Rivera anticipates it will be Little playing there this week.

Brian Burns earns top Pro Football Focus grade for Panthers Week 11

Brian Burns earns top Pro Football Focus grade for Panthers Week 11

The Panthers hit a home run when they picked Brian Burns in the first round of this year’s NFL draft. Now all they have to do is remember to play him.

Burn’s snap count has been declining ever since Bruce Irvin returned from his groin injury early in the season. This past week, he only played 16 defensive snaps. Nevertheless, Burns made an impact. He stopped the Falcons from scoring on this two-point try by stripping Matt Ryan.

For his efforts, Burns earned the highest grade of the week for the Panthers from Pro Football Focus, followed by Gerald McCoy.

Burns is one of several young Carolina players who deserve to be on the field more down the stretch.

As for the offense, right tackle Taylor Moton earned the highest grade this week at 74.0.

Again this calls into question coach Ron Rivera’s personnel decisions. Moton was taken out of the game in the first quarter to get him “settled down,” according to Rivera. Daryl Williams replaced him in the lineup and immediately gave up a sack.

Will Week 12’s Saints-Panthers game be broadcast in your area?

The New Orleans Saints are heading into their third NFC South divisional matchup in as many weeks, this time hosting the Carolina Panthers.

[jwplayer A2nDW4SZ]

The New Orleans Saints are heading into their third NFC South divisional matchup in as many weeks when they host the Carolina Panthers in Week 12. Week 11 proved to be the game where the Saints got back on track after a horrible showing against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 10.

Injuries to several key players left a lot of questions to be answered in Week 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the Saints were able to overcome that adversity and thrived against a normally high-flying Tampa Bay offense. Even if cornerback Marshon Lattimore were to miss another week, there should be little question as to whether P.J. Williams can handle starting duties against struggling Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen.

New Orleans will need to play their brand of physically-dominant football if they hope to beat the Panthers, who are led by MVP-caliber running back Christian McCaffrey. If the Saints can defeat the Panthers on Sunday, it would give New Orleans a four-game advantage in the division, with only five games left to go in the season. Another Saints win and Panthers loss the following week would lock up a third consecutive NFC South title for New Orleans.

This week’s broadcast map from 506 Sports highlights the coverage for each of the games during the early slate on CBS. The markets in red run from coast to coast, and will show the Saints-Panthers game with Tony Romo and Jim Nantz on the call. The late afternoon slate, highlighted in blue, will feature the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans. Those areas in green will catch the Oakland Raiders’ face-off against the New York Jets. Markets in yellow will be able to watch the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills. Finally, areas in orange will be able to view the Pittsburgh Steelers and the winless Cincinnati Bengals. Be sure to scour the map and see if you’ll be watching when the Saints kick off with the Panthers:

2020 NFL mock draft: Panthers pick Alabama CB at No. 18 overall

Diggs (6-foot-2, 207 pounds) has totaled four interceptions and 12 pass breakups since the start of the 2018 season.

The Panthers have a couple of solid starting cornerbacks in James Bradberry and Donte Jackson. They’ll have to pay Bradberry a whole lot of money to keep him around in 2020 and beyond, though. It’s possible they’ll try to go in another direction and find a cheaper alternative.

In a new 2020 NFL mock draft from our friends at Draft Wire, that’s what they do. In Luke Easterling’s lasted three-round mock, Carolina picks Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs at No. 18 overall.

“The Panthers are likely to lose a big, physical corner in James Bradberry to free agency, which makes Diggs the perfect replacement here. His size, length and ball skills would be a fantastic fit, giving the Panthers a cheaper alternative to re-signing Bradberry.”

Let’s take a look at the tape.

Diggs vs. South Carolina

Diggs vs. Ole Miss

Diggs vs. Texas A&M

We think the Panthers are probably more likely to give Bradberry a big extension, but if they don’t, Diggs is a strong alternative. Even if they keep Bradberry around, an argument could be made that they need more depth at cornerback in any case.

Diggs (6-foot-2, 207 pounds) has totaled four interceptions and 12 pass breakups since the start of the 2018 season.

Kyle Allen’s rankings among 2019 QBs prove Panthers need a change

Kyle Allen rankings among 2019 NFL QBs prove Panthers need a change.

Sometimes stats can be misleading, especially with a small sample size. A lot of analysts got caught up in Kyle Allen’s win/loss record early this season when he took over for an injured Cam Newton at quarterback. Now that he’s played eight games, we have a much better idea of what Allen is all about. The numbers are not kind.

Allen doesn’t even rank among the top 32 quarterbacks by Pro Football Focus this year and he’s No. 30 in ESPN’s QB metric. He’s also been inefficient and inaccurate. Here’s a handful of devastating stats.

Ron Rivera told reporters yesterday the plan is to continue developing Allen, but this is a mistake.

Will Grier might not be any better than Allen has. However, the Panthers invested a third-round pick in him. Prioritizing the progress of an undrafted QB over a No. 100 overall pick simply doesn’t make any sense. Despite his recent struggles, Allen should have the backup job on lock-down. Now it’s time to find out what the team has in Grier.

NFC playoff picture: Panthers all but out of the race after Week 11 loss

Here’s an updated look at the NFC playoff picture after Week 11.

Technically the Panthers aren’t out of the playoff race, but realistically their loss to the Falcons on Sunday made reaching the postseason impossible in 2019.

Here’s an updated look at the NFC playoff picture after Week 11.

Playoff teams

1. San Francisco 49ers (9-1)
2. Green Bay Packers (8-2)
3. New Orleans Saints (8-2)
4. Dallas Cowboys (6-4)
5. Seattle Seahawks (8-2)
6. Minnesota Vikings (8-3)

Still in the race

7. Los Angeles Rams (6-4)
8. Philadelphia Eagles (5-5)
9. Carolina Panthers (5-5)

According to FiveThirtyEight’s playoff predictions, Carolina now has just a 4% chance of making it this year.

Ron Rivera will continue trying to win games as best he can, both to save his job and because that’s what NFL coaches do. It would be prudent of him to give the younger players on his roster more snaps, though.

Panthers open 9.5-point underdogs vs. Saints for Week 12 matchup

Carolina fans may not like such bad odds, but it’s difficult to argue that the Saints shouldn’t be heavily favored.

The Panthers just got embarrassed by one NFC South rival. The oddsmakers seem to think another one is coming down the pipe. Next up, they will visit the division-leading Saints, who are 4-1 at home this season. According to BetMGM, the Panthers are 9.5-point underdogs for Sunday’s matchup.

Carolina fans may not like such bad odds, but it’s difficult to argue that the Saints shouldn’t be heavily favored. Aside from the meaningless Week 17 victory to end last season, New Orleans has dominated this rivalry or late – winning the previous four games between the two.

One silver lining could be the status of the Saints’ top cornerback, Marshon Lattimore. He sat out Sunday’s win over the Buccaneers with a hamstring injury. If he can’t play or isn’t 100%, it might open up the game even more for D.J. Moore, who has been on a tear the last three weeks.

That said, this New Orleans roster is far deeper and more talented than the Panthers’ and they have a coach that knows how to get the best out of them.

Panthers fall 6 spots in Week 12 power rankings after loss to Falcons

The Carolina Panthers have now been blown out twice this season.

The Carolina Panthers have now been blown out twice this season. It wasn’t terribly hard to see the disaster in Santa Clara coming. Sunday’s loss to the Falcons was something different, though. Few if any expected them to upset the 49ers and their NFC-best defense. This week they were playing at home in a must-win game where they were favored by 5.5 points.

The Falcons laid waste to those odds and any realistic hope of Carolina making the playoffs this year – dominating them in all three phases en route to a 29-3 win. As expected, the Panthers took a tumble in our power rankings. Going into Week 12, Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire has them at No. 16, down six spots from last week. He has questions about Kyle Allen.

“Quarterback Kyle Allen ran into a buzzsaw unseen since his no-touchdown, three-pick, seven-sack performance against San Francisco on Oct. 27, and given the quality of the defense he was facing this time around, this no-touchdown, four-pick, five-sack outing was even worse. . . It’s starting to look as if Allen is more of a work in progress than originally imagined, and the Panthers don’t have enough parts around him to make than transition any easier.”

Here at Panthers Wire we were never on board with the idea that Allen was close to being a long-term QB1 in any case. Allen is a fine backup and the Panthers should keep him in that role as long as they can control him at a low price, no matter who the starter is. However, asking him to start 14 games for a team that was designed to win now around a former MVP is asking too much.

We know what Allen is. It’s time to find out what general manager Marty Hurney got in third-round pick Will Grier. Allen is far from the only problem for Carolina, though.

While they finally were able to contain the run, Atlanta exposed the Panthers’ pass defense on Sunday in a way nobody else has. Some strange coaching decisions didn’t help (like Luke Kuechly covering Julio Jones 50 yards down the field and Brian Burns playing 16 snaps), but it was surprising to see how easily Matt Ryan and the Falcons moved the ball through the air.

On Monday, coach Ron Rivera told reporters he doesn’t think personnel changes are needed on either offense or defense. If he really believes that, then this team is already toast.
