Panthers Highlights: Christian McCaffrey sets new franchise record with TD run

Christian McCaffrey is having one of the most special seasons any Panthers player ever has.

Christian McCaffrey is having one of the most special seasons any Panthers player ever has. With this one-yard touchdown run, he set a new franchise high for most all-purpose yards in a season, passing Steve Smith’s previous record of 1,995. That was McCaffrey’s 17th score of the year.

Carolina still looks pathetic trying to stop the run, though and Donte Jackson’s coverage issues have carried over from last week. They trail the Seahawks 13-7 early in the second quarter.

Here’s a look at who won’t be in the lineup today.

TE Greg Olsen
DE Marquis Haynes
DE Christian Miller
OL Garrett McGhin
LB Ramik Wilson
DT Woodrow Hamilton
CB Corn Elder

Olsen is missing his second consecutive game with a concussion. Ian Thomas should continue to see a larger role in the passing game with him out. On the bright side, Olsen was spotted warming up on the field so he may be back soon. Haynes is recovering from a knee injury. The rest are healthy scratches.

As for the Seahawks, they’ll be playing without their top defensive lineman. Jadeveon Clowney has been ruled out with a core injury.

K.J. Wright: McCaffrey would be in MVP conversation if Panthers had more wins

The Seahawks know as well as anyone how special Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is.

The Seahawks know as well as anyone how special Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is. Last year when these two teams played, he totaled 237 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns. McCaffrey has gotten even better this season and early on he was in the MVP conversation. According to Tiffany Blackmon at NFL Network, Seattle linebacker K.J. Wright says he’d still be there if Carolina had a better record.

Wright knows what he’s talking about. While no running back has won the award since Adrian Peterson in 2012, McCaffrey’s production this year made him a strong candidate to break that streak. Heading into Week 15, McCaffrey has totaled 1,946 yards and scored 16 touchdowns from scrimmage.

Unfortunately, team success is still the ultimate consideration when it comes to deciding MVP and the Panthers simply haven’t won enough games.

Even if Carolina was undefeated, McCaffrey would be hard-pressed to beat out Lamar Jackson for the award, though. Russell Wilson deserves a few votes (which would be the first of his career) but Jackson is an easy favorite to earn the honor.

If Jackson comes back down to earth in 2020 and the Panthers manage to get hot, McCaffrey could be in the conversation again.

3 things to watch: Seattle Seahawks at Carolina Panthers

The Seattle Seahawks will search for their 11th win of the season in their final road game of 2019, against the Carolina Panthers.

The Seattle Seahawks have another chance to clinch a playoff spot in the NFC on Sunday, but they’ll need to defeat the Panthers on the road in North Carolina.

Carolina (5-8) has struggled as of late – losing five in a row – and they are without both franchise quarterback Cam Newton, who is on the injured reserve with a foot injury, and coach Ron Rivera, who was let go two weeks ago.

That doesn’t mean it will be an easy victory for the Seahawks however. Carolina still has Christian McCaffrey to deal with in the backfield, and the team will be without two key cogs on their defense – Mychal Kendricks and Jadeveon Clowney – which could make this one a high-scoring affair.

Here are three key things for fans to watch for in Seattle’s final regular season road game of the year.

3 keys to an upset win for the Panthers over Seahawks

If they’re going to pull off an upset, here are a few notes they’ll need to hit.

The Panthers are underdogs by almost a touchdown despite playing at home today against the Seahawks.

If they’re going to pull off an upset, here are a few notes they’ll need to hit.

Stop Chris Carson

Like Carolina, Seattle has a classic establish-the-run kind of offense. The Seahawks are running on 48.7% of their plays this season, which is the fifth-highest rate in the NFL. Expect them to push that tendency particularly hard today, considering the Panthers are the worst run defending team in the league. They’re ranked dead last in Football Outsiders’ rushing defense DVOA and have given up more fantasy points to running backs than any other team. With its No. 2 back Rashaad Penny out, Seattle will rely heavily on Chris Carson. It’s easier said than done with Dontari Poe and Kawann Short on injured reserve, but the Panthers’ defensive front seven has to find a way to slow him down.

Stay disciplined on defense

Selling out to stop the run can of course come back to haunt you, especially against Seattle. Russell Wilson is most dangerous when opposing defenses bite on play action fakes. Carolina’s linebackers and corners have to take extra care not to get sucked in too deep. They’ll also have to keep Wilson contained as much as possible and not let him roll out and wreak havoc outside of the pocket. That means Mario Addison, Brian Burns and company have to contain the edges.

Feed Christian McCaffrey

Seattle’s defense is not nearly as dangerous as it used to be. While they have improved a lot since trading for Jadeveon Clowney and Quandre Diggs, they can be run on. They’re ranked No. 22 against the rush by DVOA and have given up some big numbers to star running backs this year. Clowney is their best run defender but he’s out this week with a core injury. That gives the Panthers even more reason to ride Christian McCaffrey. Last year when these teams met, he posted 125 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 17 carries. He also destroyed Seattle as a receiver, totaling 112 yards and another score on 10 catches.

Panthers K Graham Gano shares memorable kick vs. Seahawks

In addition to seven regular season meetings, the two teams met in the playoffs twice, making some memorable moments along the way.

The Panthers and Seahawks have been as close to division rivals as non-division teams get in the NFL over the last decade. In addition to seven regular season meetings, the two teams met in the playoffs twice, making some memorable moments along the way.

Carolina kicker Graham Gano shared one of them on Twitter last night. Here’s the clip he posted of former Seattle safety Kam Chancellor leaping over the line of scrimmage in an attempt to block Gano’s kick.

What’s really remarkable is Chancellor did it twice in a row. On the first one, the Panthers were flagged for a false start. Chancellor was flagged on the second attempt for roughing the kicker. Gano made the third kick, but most people are only going to remember Chancellor’s remarkable athleticism.

Seattle went on to win 31-17.

Injuries cut Chancellor’s career short and he’s now retired. Gano has missed the entire 2019 season due to a broken leg.

Seahawks officially activate Ethan Pocic back from injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks have officially activated offensive lineman Ethan Pocic back from injured reserve and placed Rashaad Penny on the IR.

The Seattle Seahawks officially activated offensive lineman Ethan Pocic back to the roster from the injured reserve. Pocic, who was placed on IR Week 6 with a back injury, became eligible to return after missing the requisite next eight games of the regular season.

“He and Joey [Hunt] could both play center, which was really a bonus to us, as well as Ethan has played both guard spots, and he could play tackle if he needed to in an emergency,” coach Pete Carroll said after Friday’s practice. “His versatility has always been a great strength, all the way back to when he had done all of that in college as well. That was always the positive that he brought that was unique for him.”

The roster move was expected as Pocic had returned to practice following the team’s win over Minnesota. Pocic has appeared in just two regular-season games this year.

To make room for Pocic on the 53-man squad, running back Rashaad Penny was placed on the injured reserve. Expected to undergo ACL surgery in the near future, Penny’s season is now officially over.

Christian McCaffrey provides major test for Seahawks defense

The Seattle Seahawks will have their hands full with Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, who is having an MVP season.

The Seattle Seahawks defense has had their ups and downs this season. After struggling at the beginning of the year, Seattle found their stride shortly after acquiring safety Quandre Diggs.

The emergence of Jadeveon Clowney, improved performances from Ziggy Ansah and Shaquem Griffin off the edge, and dominance from the secondary helped Seattle finally break through as a bonafide top-ten, maybe even top-five, defense in the league.

That all fell apart last Sunday against the Rams. With Mychal Kendricks and Ansah both out, and Clowney playing hurt, the team was gashed by Jared Goff and Todd Gurley all night long.

Now, Seattle heads into Week 15 without Kendricks and Clowney, and potentially without Shaquill Griffin and Ansah, who are both listed as questionable.

Not only is that a scary thought, but they have the unenviable task of taking on a Panthers squad that boasts perhaps the most lethal non-quarterback in the league on the offensive side of the ball, Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey is an elite ball-carrier and pass-catcher, making him a difficult player to game plan against even with Kyle Allen, and not Cam Newton, under center.

“To see him perform at such a high level so consistently, he’s good at everything,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said on Wednesday. “He’s the best combo guy there is. 86 catches he’s got right now. That’s third or fourth in the league right or whatever it is, as well as 1,200 yards. It’s crazy numbers. He brings it. He runs tough and he’s good in the open field. He makes the catches and runs the routes. He’s an incredible player. The answer is yes, it’s built around him. It should be. They figured that out. It wasn’t hard to figure that out. He’s been incredible in his first couple years in the league.”

The Seahawks have been hurt by pass-catching running backs this season, namely Alvin Kamara of the Saints (nine receptions, 92 yards and a touchdown) and Devonta Freeman of the Falcons (eight receptions, 63 yards).

However, what makes this even more daunting is the absence of Kendricks. Seattle’s reliance on their 4-3 base defense often leaves their linebackers in charge of covering running backs on routes out of the backfield.

If they stick with that game plan on Sunday, rookie Cody Barton may end up in coverage on McCaffrey – which is a potentially dangerous combination for the Seahawks.

Perhaps they’ll rely more on their nickel coverage, which would allow Akeem King to cover McCaffrey instead, but so far this season this team has primarily stayed with the 4-3 configuration, even with Kendricks on the shelf.

There’s little doubt that McCaffrey will have a strong game on Sunday, but just how well he performs will have a big impact on the final score, and whether or not the Seahawks finally clinch that playoff spot in the NFC.

Week 15 Preview and Prediction: Seahawks at Panthers

Previewing and predicting the Week 15 matchup when the Seattle Seahawks travel to Carolina to face off against the Panthers.

For the 11th time in 10 years, the Seattle Seahawks will face off against the Carolina Panthers. These two clubs have met with usual regularity for teams not even on the same coast, let alone the same division. In fact, Seattle has played the Panthers at least once in every year under coach Pete Carroll – including twice in 2014 and 2015 – except for the 2017 season.

Although this has been billed as one of the better conference rivalries, as games between Carolina and Seattle are typically competitive, the “rivalry” is truly anything but. The Seahawks outright own the Panthers, winning nine out of the thirteen total match-ups, with the most recent victory coming just last year in a 30-27 road win.

This domination is expected to continue as the Seahawks open up as massive six-point road favorites over Carolina, who is in free-fall mode. The Panthers started the year 0-2, but rattled off four straight wins and looked like a legitimate playoff contender. Then they proceeded to lose six of their next seven games, including the last five straight.

The Panthers have fired their long-time coach, Ron Rivera, and are just looking to limp through the rest of a lost season as they plan for the future.
