With the growing concern over the spread of coronavirus, the NCAA announced on Thursday that it is cancelling men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

This news came one day after all Power-Five conferences canceled their tournaments and the NBA suspended play indefinitely.

Globally, we are seeing similar precautions taken with certain leagues cancelling, suspending and postponing games, or playing games but without fans in attendance.

“This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to the spread of the pandemic and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during the academic year given the ongoing decisions by other entities,” the NCAA said in statement.

As for Georgia, the Bulldogs did not stand much of a chance to make the NCAA Tournament regardless, however, there was a slither of hope remaining – Georgia would have had to win the SEC Championship if it wanted to make the tourney.

Georgia’s season ended on a win, though, as the Dawgs beat Ole Miss in the first round of the conference tournament. UGA was slated to play Florida, a team it had lost to twice already this season, on Thursday.

Georgia finished the season with a 16-16 mark.

As for Anthony Edwards, Georgia’s superstar freshman, he finished his season averaging 19.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Big Ten cancels all athletic events through the end of the academic year

The move comes as the NCAA Tournament is canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic

College sports are shutting down for the time being.

In addition to the cancellation of all NCAA championships, including the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournaments, the Big Ten Conference has announced all conference and non-conference events will be canceled through the end of the academic year. This is all due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The conference has also announced a moratorium on all recruiting events, both on-campus and off, for the foreseeable future.

The full statement released by the conference reads as follows, “The Big Ten Conference announced today that in addition to the Men’s Basketball Tournament it will be canceling all conference and non-conference competitions through the end of the academic year, including spring sports that compete beyond the academic year, and participation in all NCAA tournaments and competitions. In addition, the Conference has announced a moratorium on all on- and off-campus recruiting activities for the foreseeable future.

“The Big Ten Conference will use this time to work with the appropriate medical experts and institutional leadership to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The main priority of the Big Ten Conference continues to be the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all developing and relevant information on the COVID-19 virus.”

The move comes as sports are being shut down across the United States and world. The NBA suspended its season after Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19. The MLB and MLS followed suit Thursday morning, as has professional tennis. Conference tournaments have been canceled across the country, as have high school postseason tournaments. Arizona State, Duke and Kansas were among the first college programs to shut down all athletics, essentially withdrawing from any potential tournament. The entire Atlantic Coast Conference suspended athletics mid-day Thursday, as did the Mountain West. More conference are expected to follow suit.

We will have more on this story as it develops.

Like many sports across the country, Texas’ weekend series against New Mexico will be canceled. The Lobos were scheduled to come to Austin and play games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The news broke when the Mountain West Conference announced they had suspended baseball season until further notice. While the Big 12 has not done the same, an announcement of similar nature is expected soon.

Up until this point of the season, the Longhorns were 14-3 and riding a four-game winning streak. Conference play was slated to begin on March 20 with Texas traveling to Oklahoma.

With many sporting events throughout the country being suspended or canceled, Texas fans can only wait until the Big 12 has made an official announcement on the status of spring sports.

Notre Dame Cancels Spring Football Game

Notre Dame announced from their official football program Twitter account that the annual Blue-Gold spring game won’t take place

Earlier on Thursday the ACC Tournament and every other college basketball tournament was canceled. Brian Kelly also tweeted that the football program at Notre Dame had suspended operations for the foreseeable future in wake of Coronavirus.

It may have seemed inevitable after Michigan and Ohio State started the trend but moments ago Notre Dame announced from their official football program Twitter account that the annual Blue-Gold spring game won’t take place.

Again, hardly a surprise at this point but news nonetheless.

The Pelicans players made the smart decision in not playing the Kings last night

They’re taking things seriously.

The New Orleans Pelicans players made an executive decision for themselves last night before their game against the Sacramento Kings.

Shortly after the NBA suspended the season indefinitely when Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus, the Pelicans-Kings contest ended up being cancelled. The game was still supposed to go on as scheduled, but, per reports, Pelicans players decided they weren’t leaving the locker room.

Referee Courtney Kirkland was one of the officials scheduled to work the Pelicans-Kings game had worked a Jazz game earlier this week. When the players found that out, they decided the safest thing for them to do was to not play.

Of course, fans weren’t happy about it. Owners weren’t either.

But, look, we’ve got to be real here.

Some people don’t show symptoms immediately. Some do. Being as safe as possible should be the number one priority for literally everyone here. This thing needs to be taken seriously. Good on the players for realizing that and not making themselves play a game that could’ve easily put them in real danger.

They have a right to protect their health just like anyone else does. At this point, the game comes secondary.

Notre Dame’s baseball team was supposed to start their second set of games Thursday evening in San Antonio against Incarnate Word but mother nature had other plans as inclement weather has caused it to be canceled and will not be made up.

Notre Dame is set to play Incarnate Word in an already scheduled game Friday night with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. ET before taking on Toldeo on Saturday afternoon and the University of Texas San Antonio on Sunday.

Notre Dame started the year last weekend taking two of three games at UAB.  Mitch Megias, Tommy Vail and Joe Boyle set down the final 17 batters of the series-deciding
game last Sunday and allowed just one baserunner and no hits over the final six innings that led new head coach Link Jarrett to his first series win at Notre Dame.
