Jets OL Cameron Clark retiring due to risk of paralysis

Jets OL Cameron Clark is retiring after doctors told him he would risk paralysis if he continued to play football after a spinal cord injury.

Cameron Clark’s NFL career has come to an end.

The Jets’ 2020 fourth-round pick is retiring from football at the age of 24, his agent told ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Clark faces an increased risk of paralysis after suffering a spinal cord injury last August. Clark missed the entire 2021 season.

“Based on the advice of Dr. Andrew Hecht, a prominent orthopedic surgeon at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, Cameron will not be able to continue to play football for the New York Jets,” Clark’s agent, Alan Herman, told ESPN.

Clark was taken to the hospital after the injury occurred on August 3 during 11-on-11 drills at a Jets practice. Robert Saleh cut practice short after the offensive lineman remained motionless for a few minutes following the injury. The Jets weren’t able to provide a timeline for Clark’s potential return, but called the injury a spinal-cord contusion at the time. Saleh briefly mentioned Clark was “coming along fine” in November.

Clark didn’t play as a rookie, either, after suffering a shoulder injury early in 2020.

Jets OL Cameron Clark expected to make full recovery

Jets OL Cameron Clark is expected to make a full recovery after he sustained a spinal cord contusion during Tuesday’s practice.

The Jets announced that Cameron Clark is expected to make a full recovery after the offensive lineman sustained a neck injury during Tuesday’s practice.

Clark was diagnosed with a spinal cord contusion, according to the team. He will remain at Morristown Medical Center overnight for further observation.

Clark’s injury forced Robert Saleh to cut practice short on Tuesday as team doctors and medical personnel attended to the second-year pro. The lineman remained motionless for several minutes and had to be taken off the field on a spine board. He was driven to Morristown Medical in an ambulance.

Shortly after, Saleh said that Clark had “some” movement in his extremities at the time, but the coach didn’t want to speculate further on the severity of the injury. Hours later, the team was able to provide an encouraging update.

“It’s never good because football goes away at that moment,” Saleh said. “It’s about the person, his family, his mom and everything in his life. So that’s what takes precedence at that moment. Football kind of goes away. You get empathy in the sense that we all have families. Everything’s going to be good.”

A backup lineman, Clark was drafted by the Jets in the fourth round in 2020. He did not play as a rookie due in part to a shoulder injury.

Jets OL Cameron Clark taken to hospital after scary neck injury

Jets OL Cameron Clark was taken to the hospital after suffering a neck injury. Robert Saleh said he had “some” movement in his extremities.

A scary scene unfolded at Jets practice Tuesday when offensive lineman Cameron Clark was carted off the field and left in an ambulance after suffering a neck injury.

Robert Saleh cut practice short after Clark left the field on a spine board. The coach didn’t go into details about the cause or severity of the injury, though Saleh did say that Clark had “some” movement in his extremities. He added that the team will know more later Tuesday.

Clark was taken to Morristown Medical Center, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Clark was set to be a backup lineman – likely a guard – in his second season after the Jets took him in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. He did not play at all last year due in part to a shoulder injury.

Two other Jets left Tuesday’s practice early with injuries. Backup offensive lineman Chuma Edoga suffered a knee injury, but Saleh said that he doesn’t think it’s a “long-term” ailment. Defensive lineman Jabari Zuniga exited early as well, though Saleh didn’t know what the injury was when he spoke to reporters.

Zuniga missed a lot of time with a quad injury during his rookie season in 2020.

6 Jets who need to impress at OTAs

Which Jets need to impress at OTAs in order to improve their prospects of seeing the field under New York’s new coaching staff?

With OTAs underway at One Jets Drive, now is the time for a handful of players on New York’s roster to step up and prove their worth to Gang Green’s new regime.

The Jets will host nine more practices over the next three weeks before the offseason concludes with a mandatory minicamp from June 15-17. That gives New York’s fringe players — young ones and veterans alike — ample opportunities to earn a prominent position on the depth chart and prove they deserve a roster spot.

Robert Saleh and his coaching staff will have plenty to take in over the next couple of weeks as they work to shape the Jets’ 2021 roster. Here are six players who need to impress at OTAs to improve their standing entering training camp.

Jets vs. Dolphins inactives: Tua Tagovailoa out, Ryan Fitzpatrick to start for Miami

Jets vs. Dolphins inactives.

It’s officially once again Fitzmagic time.

After being downgraded to doubtful on Saturday, Tua Tagovailoa is inactive against the Jets after injuring his left thumb in practice on Wednesday. With Tagovailoa sidelined, Ryan Fitzpatrick will make his first start since he threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns against the Jets in Week 6.

The Dolphins will also be without Salvon Ahmed, who has started their last two games at running back. Myles Gaskin also remains on injured reserve for another week with a knee injury, making Matt Breida Miami’s starter in Week 12.

As for the Jets, they will surprisingly be without Alex Lewis on Sunday afternoon. Lewis was listed as questionable on Friday after being limited in practice for a non-injury reason. With Lewis out, New York will be down two starters on its offensive line, as George Fant is inactive with ankle and knee injuries. Chuma Edoga is also out with an ankle injury, leaving Conor McDermott to start at right tackle. Cameron Clark is active and likely to start in place of Lewis at left guard.

New York’s other inactives are James Morgan and Ross Travis.

Jets vs. Chargers inactives: Sam Ficken returns against Los Angeles

Jets vs. Chargers inactives.

Sam Ficken will be back kicking field goals for the Jets when they take on the Chargers on Sunday afternoon.

Ficken is active after missing New York’s last three games with a groin injury. Sergio Castillo, who filled in admirably for Ficken, is inactive against Los Angeles. The Jets also welcome back Frankie Luvu from injured reserve in Week 11. Luvu injured his groin against the Dolphins in Week 6 and returned to practice on Nov. 18.

There are no surprises on the Jets’ inactives list against the Chargers, as Blake Cashman, Cameron Clark and Sam Darnold were all ruled out earlier in the week. James Morgan is a healthy inactive, as New York signed Mike White to its active roster to serve as Joe Flacco’s backup with Darnold on the shelf.

As for the Chargers, they welcome back Joey Bosa, who missed their last two games with a concussion, against the Jets.

Report: Jets claim former Vikings OL Pat Elflein off waivers

The New York Jets used their waiver priority to claim former Vikings OL Pat Elflein, who was released on Saturday morning.

The Jets just added to their offensive line depth.

New York claimed Pat Elflein off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Vikings released Elflein on Saturday morning, just a day after activating the former third-round pick out of Ohio State off injured reserve. Elflein was recovering from a thumb injury he suffered in practice following Minnesota’s season-opener.

Elflein can play all along the interior. He started his career at center for the Vikings after winning the Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation’s best center, at Ohio State. Elflein was moved to left guard in 2019 and then moved to right guard for the 2020 season.

After an impressive rookie season in which he was named to the PFWA All-Rookie team, Elflein has failed to find his footing after dealing with ankle and shoulder injuries that required surgery and multiple position changes.

A change of scenery was certainly in order and the Jets need the depth. Cameron Clark has been unable to stay healthy, while Josh Andrews has been a huge disappointment as New York’s roving interior depth piece.

The Vikings actually traded up with the Jets in the 2017 NFL draft to select Elflein, so now this is a bit of a full-circle development for his career.

Jets vs. Bills inactives: Jamison Crowder out, Becton and Darnold return against Buffalo

The Jets will be without their No. 1 wide receiver against the Bills on Sunday afternoon, as Jamison Crowder is inactive with a groin injury.

The Jets will be without their No. 1 wide receiver against the Bills on Sunday afternoon, as Jamison Crowder is inactive with a groin injury.

Crowder tweaked his groin in practice during the week and was downgraded to doubtful on Saturday despite practicing on a limited basis on Friday. Crowder caught seven passes for 115 yards and one touchdown against Buffalo in Week 1, so it will be on the likes of Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims, who is making his NFL debut after being activated from injured reserve, to make up for that lost production.

The Jets are also without Sam Ficken, who sustained a groin injury of his own during the week. Sergio Castillo will make his NFL debut and kick in place of Ficken. Alex Lewis is inactive with an injury, while Cameron Clark remains out of action despite being activated from injured reserve on Saturday. Jordan Willis has been traded to the 49ers, but is inactive, as the deal is not yet official, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

On a positive note, Crowder being sidelined coincides with Sam Darnold and Mekhi Becton’s return to the starting lineup. Becton missed New York’s last two games with a shoulder injury and its offensive line struggled mightily over that span, allowing 13 quarterback hurries, 10 quarterback hits and five sacks. The Louisville product will assume his starting spot at left tackle and is tasked with slowing down Mario Addison and Jerry Hughes as he did in Week 1. The Jets’ offense sputtered with Darnold on the sideline, as Joe Flacco underwhelmed and posted only 10 points in two starts under center.

As for the Bills, they will be without starting wide receiver John Brown and running back T.J. Yeldon, who took on an increased role in Buffalo’s ground game the last two weeks.

Jets activate Denzel Mims, Cameron Clark off injured reserve, Jamison Crowder downgraded to doubtful

The Jets have activated Denzel Mims and Cameron Clark off of the injured reserve list.

It’s official — Denzel Mims will finally make his NFL debut against the Bills in Week 7.

The Jets announced on Saturday that they have activated Mims and Cameron Clark off of the injured reserve list. New York also promoted Sergio Castillo and Bryce Hager from the practice squad to the active roster.

Mims has New York’s first six games with multiple hamstring injuries. The first one came at the beginning of training camp that caused him to miss the majority of camp. He then injured his other hamstring, forcing him out of action yet again. Clark has also dealt with an assortment of injuries. He injured his shoulder in camp and then hurt his knee. Clark’s been on injured reserve since the beginning of September.

As for Castillo, he’ll kick for the injured Sam Ficken (groin). Castillo has never kicked in an NFL game before, but has kicked in the CFL and AAF. Hager has been on the Jets’ practice squad since September 22nd.

While Mims return is a positive for the Jets, Jamison Crowder has been downgraded to doubtful with a groin injury. Meanwhile, Harvey Langi was fined $4,412 for unnecessary roughness in last week’s game against the Dolphins, according to the NY Post’s Brian Costello.
