Breaking down the terms of Dolphins RB Salvon Ahmed’s new contract

Here’s what Dolphins RB Salvon Ahmed’s new contract looks like.

Before the start of free agency, the Miami Dolphins already had four running backs under contract for the 2024 season, but they decided to bring back their lone free agent at the position – Salvon Ahmed.

Ahmed, 25, agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.29 million (none guaranteed) to rejoin the Dolphins for his fifth season with the team.

According to Over the Cap, he will receive a $1.13 million base salary and another $167,500 in per-game roster bonuses. He’ll count for  $1.06 million against the cap in 2024.

This deal doesn’t guarantee Ahmed a spot on the roster in September, as releasing him would save all $1.06 million in cap space and wouldn’t leave the team with any dead cap.

The former Washington Husky will still have to prove his worth to earn a spot on the 53-man roster or the practice squad, as he’ll be competing with Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., De’Von Achane and Chris brooks.

Dolphins free agent profile: Is Salvon Ahmed done in Miami?

Should Miami try to bring back the RB for a fifth season?

The Miami Dolphins have a large group of players who are expected to hit free agency in the coming weeks, including a running back who is set to begin his fifth season in the league – Salvon Ahmed.

Ahmed, 25, was originally signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2020 following his collegiate career at Washington.

The running back failed to make San Francisco’s 53-man roster as a rookie out of training camp, but he was claimed by the Dolphins just a day later.

Since then, Ahmed has rushed for 593 yards and five touchdowns on 3.6 yards per attempt while bringing in 16 receptions for another 274 yards and a score.

Last year, he beat out college and NFL teammate Myles Gaskin for the last veteran roster spot heading into the season. However, he suffered a foot injury in Miami’s Week 11 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders that landed him on injured reserve and ended his season.

The former Husky is now entering unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career, and while the Dolphins have holes at many positions, running back isn’t necessarily one of them.

Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane, Jeff Wilson and Chris Brooks are all under contract for 2024, meaning opportunities will be limited for a veteran back like Ahmed in the system. It’s always great to have depth in case of injuries, but Miami may be better suited looking for another back in the draft or in the undrafted free-agent crop.

Ranking 2024’s top 12 free-agent running backs

Top 12 running backs of the 2024 offseason

Given what they gave Miles Sanders last year, the Carolina Panthers probably won’t be sifting through the open market for a big-name running back this spring.

But just in case you were curious, here are the top 12 free-agent rushers for the offseason:

Grading the Dolphins running backs after their 2023 season

A look at how Miami’s RBs performed this year.

The Miami Dolphins finished their 2023 campaign with an 11-6 record and made the postseason for the second time in as many years under head coach Mike McDaniel. Unfortunately, it came to an end with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round.

While other teams are in the midst of their playoff run, it’s time to do some reflecting on the team in South Florida.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reviewing and evaluating different positions for the Dolphins in 2023. Today, we’ll look at the running backs.

Dolphins make a trio of roster moves on Tuesday

One goes to IR, one signs with the 53 and one signs with the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins continue to get bit by the injury bug throughout their 2023 campaign.

On Tuesday, they placed running back Salvon Ahmed on injured reserve after he suffered a foot injury during Miami’s battle with the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

He’ll now have to miss at least four games before he returns, and the Dolphins are running out of designations.

That leaves just Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. as the lone healthy backs on the active roster, with De’Von Achane also dealing with a knee issue.

To replace Ahmed on the 53-man roster, the Dolphins signed wide receiver Robbie Chosen from their own practice squad. He was elevated for the second time this year last week and recorded two receptions for 39 yards.

That move left an open spot on the practice squad, which Miami has filled by signing running back Darrynton Evans. That name may seem familiar, and that would be because he was with the team earlier this year before he was signed to the Chicago Bears active roster.

If the Dolphins only have Mostert and Wilson going into Friday, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Evans get an elevation.

WATCH: Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa hits Salvon Ahmed to take 14-10 lead over Raiders

Miami finds the end zone again.

Without running back De’Von Achane in the game due to an injury, the Miami Dolphins have to rely on Raheem Mostert and Salvon Ahmed at the position.

On their fourth drive of the game, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa helped bring the Dolphins down the field and set them up in the red zone. Tagovailoa, with a blitz coming at him, found Ahmed open, who slipped into the end zone for an 11-yard score.

Ahmed’s second total touchdown of the season gave Miami a 14-10 lead with just over two minutes left in the second quarter.

With injuries piling up on offense, Ahmed and company will have to step up to win this one.

Studs and duds from first half of the Dolphins’ 2023 season

Some of the best and worst performances from the first half of the year.

The Miami Dolphins have spent the last week relaxing and recovering away from the football field, as they enjoyed a bye week.

Prior to their time off, Mike McDaniel’s team played nine contests that brought them to a 6-3 record entering their break.

Before the second half of Miami’s 2023 campaign kicks off, it’s a good time to reflect on the first half and look at some of the best and worst performances from those wearing aqua and orange.

Here are some studs and duds through their first nine games:

Breaking down Dolphins RB Salvon Ahmed’s new contract

He was Miami’s first re-signing of the offseason.

While the NFL’s legal tampering is just over a day old, all 32 teams don’t have to wait until the start of the league year to officially re-sign their own pending free agents.

The Miami Dolphins got a head start last week, re-signing running back Salvon Ahmed, who was set to be a restricted free agent.

Ahmed, 24, was originally signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Washington in 2020. This past season, Ahmed was passed on the depth chart by newcomers Raheem Mostert, Chase Edmonds and Jeff Wilson, leading to his lowest output in any year, as he rushed for just 64 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

The former Husky’s new deal is a one-year contract to return to Miami worth $1.45 million. According to Over the Cap, the deal includes $1.01 million in base salary ($200,000 guaranteed), a prorated bonus of $100,000 and $340,000 in per-game roster bonuses. His cap hit for 2023 is $1.41 million.

Miami opted to sign Ahmed to a one-year deal rather than tender him with the right-of-first-refusal tender, saving them about $1.2 million. With the way this contract is structured, the Dolphins could release the back and only incur $300,000 in a dead cap hit while saving $1.1 million.

This means there’s no guarantee that Ahmed makes the roster, but, for right now, he and Raheem Mostert are the only ones on it.

Dolphins to re-sign RB Salvon Ahmed to one-year deal

Miami opted not to tender the running back.

The Miami Dolphins, ahead of the start of the 2023 league year, have begun making moves to set their roster up for the best chance to succeed.

Those moves included cutting tight end Cethan Carter, informing cornerback Byron Jones that he’d be released with a post-June 1 designation and restructuring the contracts of linebacker Bradley Chubb, left tackle Terron Armstead and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Now, the Dolphins have started working on retaining some of their pending free agents, as the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reports that running back Salvon Ahmed has agreed to return to the team for another season. The deal is said to be for just one year and is worth up to $1.8 million.

Prior to this signing, Miami had no running backs under contract, as Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson and Myles Gaskin are all set to be unrestricted free agents come March 15.

Ahmed, 24, finished 2022 with only 64 yards and one touchdown on 12 touches, however, he was efficient with the ball, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt.

His role will likely become more clear once more signings are announced, but it is interesting that the Dolphins opted to re-sign Ahmed instead of tendering him, which, even at the lowest tender, was worth $2.8 million. At the very least, Miami has a depth running back for 2023.
