Giants restore Cole Beasley to practice squad, release two

The New York Giants have restored WR Cole Beasley to their practice squad, added a veteran OT and terminated the contracts of two others.

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Tuesday, beginning with wide receiver Cole Beasley being restored to the practice squad.

The Giants signed Beasley prior to the start of training camp and he appeared destined to make the 53-man roster before suffering a quad injury and being waived as a part of final cuts. He was quickly re-signed to the practice squad with an injured reserved designation.

Due to the designation, Beasley was ineligible to play for the first four weeks of the season.

In addition to Beasley, the Giants also signed veteran offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste to their practice squad.

The 27-year-old Cajuste was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL draft. After four seasons playing under Bill Belichick, he signed with the New York Jets this past May but was waived/injured in early August. A week later, he was released with an injury settlement.

Now healthy, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound Cajuste provides the Giants with a much-needed swing tackle.

In order to clear room on their practice squad for Beasley and Cajuste, the Giants terminated the contracts of cornerback Amani Oruwariye and wide receiver Cam Sims.

Former Alabama WR Cam Sims signed to New York Giants practice squad

Former Alabama WR Cam Sims was signed to the New York Giants practice squad on Monday

Former Alabama wide receiver Cam Sims signed with the New York Giants practice squad on Monday. Sims was recently released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Aug. 29.

Sims played for Alabama from 2014-2017. The Louisana native hauled in 41 receptions for 467 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He was a key piece of Alabama’s receiving core up until he entered the 2018 NFL draft.

Sims went undrafted and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Commanders.

In five seasons with the Commanders, Sims had 57 receptions for 804 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Following the 2022 season, Sims signed a one-year deal with the Raiders. After five months with the Raiders organization, Sims was released.

Now, he will have an opportunity to work his way up from the practice squad. It will be interesting to see if Sims is elevated to the Giants active roster at any point during the 2023 season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Sims’ professional career as well as other former Alabama players in the NFL.

Giants sign WR Cam Sims to practice squad

The New York Giants have placed WR Cole Beasley (quad) on the practice squad/injured list and signed WR Cam Sims.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll refused to offer any injury updates while speaking to reporters on Monday but one came shortly after his Zoom call ended.

The Giants announced that veteran wide receiver Cole Beasley (quad) has been placed on the practice squad/injured list. He will miss at least the first four games of the season.

Although Beasley had been added to the practice squad, expectations were that he’d be elevated and play a notable role for the Giants offensively. In his absence, the pressure falls to Sterling Shepard and Wan’Dale Robinson, both of whom are returning from ACL injuries.

In replacing Beasley’s place on the practice squad, the Giants have signed wide receiver Cam Sims.

The 27-year-old Sims originally signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama in 2018. He spent last summer with the Las Vegas Raiders before being released as a part of final cuts.

In 55 career games (17 starts), Sims has hauled in 57 receptions for 804 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also run the ball twice for an additional 12 yards.

Most notably, Sims has some special teams experience and can play the role of gunner, which could be valuable to the Giants after losing rookie wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton for the season.

Raiders clear up picture at wide receiver with release of veterans Keelan Cole, Phillip Dorsett

WR picture gets clearer for Raiders with release of vets Keelan Cole, Phillip Dorsett

And in one fell swoop, the Raiders have given us a better idea of what the Raiders wide receiver room will look like this season.

With the cutdown deadline fast approaching, the team has notified Keelan Cole and Phillip Dorsett they will not be on the initial 53-man roster, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL media.

With four of the wide receiver spots looking to be set, it leaves one or two spots up for grabs and three receivers left to take it/them.

The four spots that are set are:

Davante Adams
Jakobi Meyers
Hunter Renfrow
DeAndre Carter

The three receivers vying for either the final spot or final two spots are Tre Tucker, Kristian Wilkerson, and Cam Sims.

Tucker looked terrible in preseason, dropping passes and muffing kicks. The only thing he may have going for him is being a third round (100 overall) rookie. But will that be enough?

Both Wilkerson and Sims made solid cases for their retention this preseason. Wilkerson in particular had a monster final preseason game in Dallas, with 10 catches for 122 yards. Sims had highlight reel grabs in both the final two preseason games. The first a toe-tapping touchdown against the Rams and the other a leaping 22-yard grab against the Cowboys.

Wilkerson is more of a possession receiver while Sims is a jump ball/red zone target. Wilkerson has familiarity in Josh McDaniels’s system, having spent two seasons in New England in 2020-21. Sims has more NFL experience, having appeared in 55 games with 17 starts over five seasons.

We will know soon which of these three made the roster.

UPDATE: Kristian Wilkerson has made the Raiders’ 53-man roster according to a source. That puts the Raiders WR room at five.

The Ravens and Commanders squared off for their first of two joint practices Tuesday and the rivals didn’t hold back any intensity or physical play.

There were scuffles in the later portions of practice, and deep balls galore from star quarterback Lamar Jackson.

“That’s the bottom line; we got a lot of work done,” Harbaugh said. “Joint practices are a challenge, always, obviously, because you’ve got two teams out here, and there is a lot of pride. I thought it was a really good practice. We had a couple dust-ups, which you don’t want to see, but it’s not really unexpected. I thought they got handled pretty quickly.”

With Day 2 of practice set to begin shortly, here are takeaways and observations from Day 1.

15 Commanders to watch during joint practices with the Ravens

There’s star power at multiple positions on both sides of the football, but there are also several intriguing position battles to monitor.

Former Alabama WR Cam Sims signs with Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders signed former Alabama wide receiver Cam Sims on Monday. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed at this time.

Former Alabama wide receiver Cam Sims agreed to a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed at this time.

Sims spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Washington Commanders, where he primarily served as a backup wide receiver during that time period.

In his time with the Commanders, Sims hauled in 57 receptions for 804 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

As he heads to Las Vegas, one has to wonder what his role might look like in Josh McDaniels’ offense. The Raiders cut ties with pass catchers,  Mack Hollins and Darren Waller early this offseason. With a new quarterback as well, it will be interesting to see how Sims is utilized in the offense.

Sims will join former Alabama players O.J. Howard, Josh Jacobs, and Anthony Averett in Las Vegas.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama players in the NFL and free agent signings regarding former Alabama players.
