Five star Ohio State football priority 2023 safety Caleb Downs commitment date set

Would be huge if Ohio State made a case to close late. #GoBucks

Arguably Ohio State football’s top remaining recruiting target has announced when he will let the college football world know what school he will attend, and we won’t have to wait that long.

According to a post on his Twitter account, 5-star 2023 safety, Caleb Downs, will announce his commitment next Wednesday, July 27. And though there is not an official list that we can look at, Downs mentioned the Buckeyes, Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame, Florida, and Oklahoma in his hashtag comments.

At present, it would appear as though Alabama is in the lead to land his services, but there have been some posts and retweets by Downs himself as well as rumors circulating that Ohio State is still very much in play. However, good or bad, with the announcement of a decision looming, you have to believe that Downs has at least made up his mind and just awaiting the chance to let everyone know.

We’ll be all over it on Wednesday.

NEXT … The Recruitment Rundown

Alabama Morning Drive: Tide adds speedy WR Cole Adams to 2023 class

Can anyone slow down Alabama’s momentum on the recruiting trail?

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. Now that we’ve made it to Thursday, we are just one day away from a long holiday weekend.

If you thought recruiting news had been hot, just wait to see what happens over the next few days!

Speaking of recruiting, Nick Saban and Alabama added one of the nation’s best slot receiver prospects to the class of 2023 on Wednesday night when four-star [autotag]Cole Adams[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Tide.

Adams is a playmaking wideout from Oklahoma who chose the Crimson Tide over the in-state Sooners and other high-level programs such as Arkansas, LSU, Michigan State, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.

Let’s take a look at a few other stories that Tide fans should be following.

Alabama Morning Drive: Recapping a busy weekend in recruiting

Alabama hosts yet another impressive weekend of official visits.

Good Monday morning, Tide fans! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone enjoyed their Father’s Day weekend and was able to spend some time with all the father figures in your life.

Despite it being a holiday weekend, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama had a busy weekend when it comes to recruiting. Several of the nation’s top prospects were in town over the weekend for official visits. Coach Saban and the staff even took the time to extend some offers to prospects outside of the 2023 class.

Over the next few minutes, we will present you with some of the best tweets from several of the prospects over this past weekend.

Without wasting too much time let’s just dive right into the meat of the article.

Alabama Morning Drive: June visits are underway in Tuscaloosa

The latest news and notes involving the Alabama Crimson Tide on Thursday morning.

Good Thursday morning, Tide fan! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive where we deliver the latest news and notes involving your Alabama Crimson Tide each weekday morning.

June is set to be a busy month for the Alabama football staff with countless visitors anticipated to arrive in Tuscaloosa.

Not only will [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and his staff host some of the nation’s top prospects on official visits, but several other high-priority recruits will stop by for unofficial visits throughout the month.

Alabama has a chance to upgrade its current 2023 recruiting class with an intense month of visits.

Let’s take a look at the top five most important players, in my opinion, that Alabama will host in June.

ESPN believes that Notre Dame has a shot with one of nations best ‘23 recruits

The Irish need to knock this official out of the park

The Irish have yet to slow down with their 2023 recruiting, according to ESPN they currently have the most ESPN 300 commits along with Georgia, Ohio State and Louisville. The group of twelve commits ranks first in their team rankings, meaning it’s not just quantity for the Irish, that quality is there as well.

Marcus Freeman has done a fantastic job in his first full recruiting cycle, one that could set the standard for his tenure in South Bend. Of the twelve there are currently two safeties committed, Texas’ [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] paired with New Jersey’s [autotag]Adon Shuler[/autotag], and according to ESPN (insider), the Irish could be getting another impressive prospect to join them, Georgia’s [autotag]Caleb Downs[/autotag].

In an breakdown of the top remaining uncommitted prospects at each position, Tom VanHaaren postulates that Downs four schools that he has planned visits to, “it’s possible his decision will come from one of those four.” Along with a visit to South Bend, Downs has scheduled trips to Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State.

The Irish have done very well recently recruiting the Peach State and if they could land Downs, that would be another massive recruiting win in SEC country and one that [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] could use in the future.

Five-star QB Arch Manning set to visit Alabama in April

The first weekend in April could be huge for Nick Saban and the Tide.

Arch Manning has become one of the most polarizing recruits in recent memory. Aside from his family legacy, Manning is tremendously talented and has all the tools to be a future No. 1 pick in the NFL draft.

It is now being reported that the Louisiana native is set to return to Tuscaloosa for the first time since October. Manning is now set to visit the Tide on April 3. The first weekend in April has become a crucial weekend for Nick Saban and Alabama when it comes to the class of 2023. Aside from Manning being there on Sunday, coach Saban and his staff will host five-star safety Caleb Downs and four-star defensive lineman Jayden Wayne on Saturday, April 2.

Currently, according to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM), Alabama is the favorite to land the Manning legacy at 40.2%.

Manning’s recruitment is sure to intensify over the next several months and Roll Tide Wire will be here every step of the way.

Gators make good impression on nation’s top safety during March visit

The nation’s top safety left Gainesville impressed after his Saturday visit.

Five-star safety Caleb Downs visited the University of Florida on March 19 and got a chance to meet the new Gators coaching staff in person.

Defensive back coach Corey Raymond and defensive coordinator Patrick Toney were Downs’ two main points of contact, according to 247Sports. Napier spent a brief moment with him, as well, and Downs had nothing but good things to say about the group.

“Coach Raymond is known as one of the best coaches in the nation,” Downs said. “Talking to him is a good thing. And then coach Toney, they say he’s a guru and that he knows a lot about defense. He had a great defense at (Louisiana) and everybody knows his past.”

Downs spoke to current players about their recruiting process and why they decided to stay following the coaching change. Napier’s efforts to better the program were likely part of the discussion, and it isn’t lost on Downs that Florida’s new coach picked him as one of the few out-of-state recruits being targeted by Florida early on.

“(Napier) wants to win,” he said. “He wants to bring in the right players that it takes to win.”

The 6-foot, 185-pound safety fits that description well as the top-ranked player in the country at his position and No. 13 overall by the 247Sports composite. Kirby Smart has yoinked some of the best talents in Florida with little resistance in recent years, but Napier appears determined to change that.

With 33 offers on the table and some of the very best at the top of the list (Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, etc.), Downs has a lot to consider before he makes a commitment. He hopes to take official visits in June and make a decision before the season begins. Florida may get one of those officials in a few months after a successful visit.

Alabama Morning Drive: Calvin Ridley’s suspension dominates headlines

The top stories involving the Crimson Tide on Tuesday morning.

I hope this Tuesday edition of the Alabama Morning Drive finds you well. I certainly appreciate each of you for allowing Roll Tide Wire to be a small part of your morning. We have a lot to talk about this morning, especially after the story broke on Monday afternoon regarding Calvin Ridley.

Today we will take a look at Ridley’s suspension, Alabama basketball’s latest tournament projections, plus the news that a five-star defensive back in the class of 2023 intends to visit the Tide next month.

Calvin Ridley suspended for the 2022 NFL season

Boy, did Monday deliver some shocking news or what? The former Alabama and current Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver has been suspended for the entire 2022 NFL season for betting on NFL games during the 2021 season.

Ridley admitted that he bet a total of $1,500.00 and ensured fans that he does not have a gambling problem.

Alabama to land a visit with top safety in the class of 2023

Caleb Downs is unanimously considered to be the top safety prospect in the class of 2023. The Georiga native now says he plans to visit the Tide at the beginning of April. Downs comes from an athletic family. His father Gary Downs, played running back at NC State and went on to be a third-round selection in the 1994 NFL draft. Downs also has siblings that compete at the collegiate level.

‘Bama hoops updated tournament predictions

Although the regular season ended on a bit of a sour note with back-to-back losses, Nate Oats and the Tide still have plenty to play for. The SEC tournament will tip-off on Wednesday, but Alabama is not set to take the hardwood until Thursday night.

So, as we enter conference tournament action, where does the Crimson Tide stand when it comes to the NCAA tournament? Well, I’m glad you asked.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi’s latest NCAA Bracketology still has Alabama projected as a 5-seed and traveling to Portland to take on 12-seed South Dakota State.

Jerry Palm of CBS also has the Tide slated as a 5-seed in his latest bracket projections.

Here at USA TODAY, Alabama is projected as a 6-seed and taking on Miami (Fla.) in Indianapolis.

With a strong showing in Tampa during the SEC tournament, the Tide could see a boost in its tournament seeding.

That is going to put an end to our Tuesday edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone has a safe and happy day. Make sure to stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for all the latest on the Alabama Crimson Tide!

A comprehensive look at some of Oklahoma Football’s recent offers

Oklahoma has been busy on the recruiting trail. Here’s a look at some of the recent offers OU has sent out to 2023 and 2024 prospects.

National Signing Day is swiftly approaching on Feb. 2 and that means the 2022 class is just about finished.

With that date within shouting distance, it’s time for Oklahoma to turn its collective attention to the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes.

OU has been busy sending out offers and looking to establish momentum in both of their upcoming classes. Here’s a look at some of the names the Sooners have offered recently.

Sooners offer the nation’s top safety of the 2023 recruiting class, Caleb Downs

Caleb Downs, the consensus No. 1 safety in the 2023 class, received an offer from Oklahoma.

With national signing day quickly approaching on Feb. 2, Oklahoma’s 2022 signing class will officially be finished up soon. The Sooners have already signed 15 players and linebacker Jaren Kanak arrived on campus this weekend as well.

There’s been several transfer portal additions for Oklahoma, too, and OU isn’t done adding from the transfer portal.

Still, it’s just about time for the Sooners to turn their collective attention to the 2023 class.

Oklahoma has a pair of commitments in its 2023 recruiting class. Four-star wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. from Los Alamitos High School and three-star interior offensive lineman Joshua Bates out of Durango High School.

On Sunday morning, class of 2023 safety Caleb Downs announced he has received an offer from Oklahoma.

Downs is the consensus No. 1 safety nationally across each of the four major recruiting services. The 6-foot, 185 pound defensive back is regarded as one of the best players overall in the 2023 cycle.

247Sports ranks the Hoschton, Ga., native as its No. 8 player overall in 2023, On3 rates Downs No. 11, Rivals has him No. 24 and ESPN places Downs at No. 31 nationally.

In the On3 consensus rankings, the Mill Creek High School product is No. 9 nationally and he’s ranked No. 12 in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Caleb Downs’ Recruiting Profile

Rating

Stars Overall State Position
247Sports 4 8 2 1
Rivals 4 24 3 1
ESPN 4 31 2 1
247 Composite 5 12 2 1
On3 Recruiting 5 11 2 1
On3 Consensus 5 9 2 1

Here’s what 247Sports’ Southeast recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins wrote about Downs in his scouting report.

An elite safety prospect and one that should star on Saturdays before eventually lacing up the cleats on Sundays. Simply moves different than others as he’s fluid in almost everything he does and always seems to be in control of his body. Plays with a vigorous demeanor and likes to hit people. Built like more of an in-the-box safety, but has the speed and range to cover the deepest parts of the field. Quick to trigger and react to what’s going on in front of him. Takes strong angles in run support, almost always arriving with the intentions of leveling someone. Uses leverage and his core strength to to drop ball carriers of all different sizes. Excels as a defensive back, but has also been featured as a running back and wide receiver at the high school level. Could honestly play both positions in college if he wanted to. Totaled 57 tackles, 14 pass break ups and four interceptions as a sophomore playing in the Peach State’s highest classification. Continued to make shine on both sides of the ball as a junior. Comes from a football family as his father was an NFL running back while his brother was an All-American wide receiver that signed with North Carolina. Should be viewed as a future impact player for a Top 25 program. – Ivins, 247Sports.

According to On3’s director of recruiting Chad Simmons, new Oklahoma cornerbacks coach Jay Valai had a strong relationship with Downs while he was at Alabama.

That’s a relationship that OU will be counting upon to win out against an offers list that includes a cluster of the country’s top programs. Alabama, Arkansas, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan and plenty of others are all in the mix for Downs.
