The Athletic projects three Ohio State Buckeyes to be selected in first round of 2023 NFL draft

We have one main complaint about this draft projection from The Athletic. #GoBucks

[autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] football is one of the most successful at getting their players to the next level and the 2023 NFL draft should not be any different.

Multiple Buckeyes expect their name to be called early and some of them should be off teams’ boards during the first round of the draft.

The Athletic, like many other outlets, is constantly updating its mock drafts and just recently made its choices (subscription required). The Athletic is unique: It used its college football writers to make the selections based on their information.

Three Buckeyes were selected and you can find out below where each of them is projected to land along with my conclusion at the end.

Ohio State coaches Ryan Day, Brian Hartline and Corey Dennis to see 5-star QB this Friday

The Buckeyes won’t be the only ones focusing on this future star #GoBucks

Playing quarterback for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] should be a very easy sell for head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag]. Since Day took over the Buckeye offense, all of his starting quarterbacks have gone on to be first-round [autotag]NFL draft[/autotag] selections. The latest is [autotag]C.J. Stoud[/autotag], at least if multiple mock drafts prove accurate.

Even though they lost out on [autotag]Dylan Raiola[/autotag], the Buckeyes should still find a high-level quarterback to replace him in the 2024 recruiting class. That search has heated up in recent days.

The staff offered a scholarship to Alabama commit [autotag]Julian Sayin[/autotag] on Tuesday. On Friday, coaches will head to North Carolina to visit quarterback [autotag]Jadyn Davis[/autotag]. New offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] and quarterbacks coach [autotag]Corey Dennis[/autotag] will accompany the head man on the trip.

The five-star quarterback will be busy this weekend.

A report from 247Sports Steve Wiltfong says Davis will not only visit with Ohio State coaches on Friday, but also plans to visit the University of North Carolina. Wiltfong also noted Clemson will be on hand to watch Davis work out on Wednesday, and Tigers head coach [autotag]Dabo Swinney[/autotag] will visit next week.

The Tigers aren’t the only team to see Davis on Wednesday. Georgia head coach [autotag]Kirby Smart[/autotag] is “helicoptering” in while Michigan head coach [autotag]Jim Harbaugh[/autotag] is set for an evening chat.

The competition for Davis’ pledge and ensuing signature is fierce as multiple top programs are vying for the five-star quarterback.

One outlet somehow believes C.J. Stroud to the NFL isn’t a lock

Do you believe this rumor? #GoBucks

We are all waiting on what Ohio State quarterback [autotag]C.J. Stoud[/autotag] will do next year, although it would be a major shock if he doesn’t head off to the [autotag]NFL[/autotag]. But don’t tell that to one outlet. In fact, it believes there is potential for Stroud to return for another year at [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag].

No. Really.

Spark College Football has heard a rumor that Stroud is considering staying in Columbus due to a very “large NIL package being proposed to him.” Now this could very well be just smoke. But the report also mentioned that Las Vegas experts have adjusted the odds for [autotag]Kentucky[/autotag] quarterback [autotag]Will Levis[/autotag] being selected No. 1.

We’re not sure where Spark College Football got this rumor, but something tells us someone is having fun at others’ expense.

The Chicago Bears own the first pick and already have a former Buckeye quarterback as their starter, [autotag]Justin Fields[/autotag]. They just made former [autotag]Big Ten[/autotag] commissioner [autotag]Kevin Warren[/autotag] their president and CEO. Their general manager, [autotag]Ryan Poles[/autotag] has said he loves Fields and most likely will not draft a quarterback with their pick, but there is potential they trade down.

But back to Stroud. He has until Monday, Jan. 16, to make a decision but aside from this report all signs point to him declaring for the draft.

Don’t get your hopes up, in other words.

Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields Sugar Bowl record is still safe

The record still stands for Justin Fields! #GoBucks

For a portion of the second half of the [autotag]All-State Sugar Bowl[/autotag], former [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] quarterback [autotag]Justin Fields[/autotag] passing touchdown record was in jeopardy. Alabama’s [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] had himself a game against [autotag]Kansas State[/autotag].

After a slow start and falling behind 10-0, Young would then go on to throw for five touchdowns, just one short of Fields record set in 2021. The Crimson Tide quarterback might have had an even better game had he made a few better throws to some open receivers during the course of the game.

That was good news for Fields, as Young was pulled late in the fourth quarter with his record still intact.

It was still an impressive day for Young, but not nearly as impressive as when Fields absolutely carved up Clemson in a [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag] semi-final. Let’s hope that [autotag]C.J. Stoud[/autotag] has a Fields-like performance against Georgia this evening.
