Former Texas DT Poona Ford agrees to one-year deal with Buffalo Bills

“Ford turned down more money elsewhere to try to win a ring in Buffalo.”

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Poona Ford is heading to a new NFL team. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Ford has agreed to a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills.

Pelissero had the following thoughts on what Ford’s signing means to the Bills franchise and its 2023 prospects for contention.

“One of the top free agents still available, Ford turned down more money elsewhere to try to win a ring in Buffalo. A big (literally) post-draft addition for Sean McDermott’s defense.”

McDermott earned the head coaching position with the Bills after coaching a dominant Carolina Panthers defense in 2015. Now he has a chance to field a strong defense in Buffalo for his high scoring offense led by quarterback Josh Allen.

In the case of Poona Ford, the undersized defender has a chance to shut down the inside of the line of scrimmage for a championship contending team. He could be a piece that helps catapult the Bills past the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason.

Quinton Jefferson explains change of perception toward Bills

Buffalo Bills DL Quinton Jefferson explains how team has changed in the view of the NFL.

Quinton Jefferson was a fifth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2016. He did some jumping around, but eventually landed back with the Seahawks and his career took off. He had 3.5 sacks, 26 tackles, and four for loss last season.

Despite that moving around, a 2015 Jefferson was probably happy he didn’t get selected by the Buffalo Bills in the draft a few years back.

But what a difference a few seasons can make.

Jefferson chatted with western New York media via conference call on Thursday and described why he’s happy to join the Bills. But the most interesting part is the comparison he made to just a few years back.

“Four or five years ago, you told me about Buffalo, I’d be like… I don’t even know,” Jefferson said with a pause. “You ask guys about Buffalo now and they go, ‘Oh hell yeah I’ll come play for Buffalo. It’s a great team, it’s a great culture, great fans.’ I’m excited.”

Since 2017, when the Bills brought in head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, things certainly have changed. The team has made the playoffs two of the three years that duo started redoing things their way in Buffalo.

It’s clear with Jefferson that the “new” Bills… the team’s changed perception across the NFL, attracted him to signing in Buffalo.

“I left a place with great culture, great people, it made football fun and that was one of the biggest thing I’ve seen from Buffalo. I hear from other players just talking about, ‘(Buffalo is) a great place, with a great fan base,’ and like I said, just good energy,” Jefferson said. “And playing good football and winning. It’s something I definitely wanted to be part of. That’s a big thing.”

Buffalo is hoping that Jefferson’s addition will help the team do more of the same. McDermott said earlier this offseason that Jefferson has versatility that’s going to be a key for the Bills’ defensive line.

“Quinton Jefferson has position flexibility,” McDermott said. “You know how much I love that, and versatility I think is huge. He played really good snaps for the Seattle Seahawks on a good defense. He’s played inside, he’s played outside. Love his relentless attitude and approach, a true pro.”

Versatility is something that Jefferson said he picked up early in his football career, all the way back in high school. Overall, he said he prefers to play the 3-tech spot on the defensive line, which would be inside. But the Bills have talent there in the form of Ed Oliver, and then there’s Mario Addison and Jerry Hughes on the edge spots. Where will Jefferson fit?

It’s going to be a talented group and battle for playing time. But that’s not something that turned Jefferson away from the Bills, instead, like the Bills’ new perception across the NFL, the talent on Buffalo’s defense and D-line is just what he sought out as a free agent.

“Another thing, I wanted to play for a good organization… A good D-line with a lot of talent. I figured, why not come join that? It’s kind of what I left, so I wanted to join something good as well and see how I can contribute. (The Bills) are a playoff caliber team and I wanted to be a part of that,” Jefferson said.

8 things to know about new Bills OL Evan Boehm

Get to know new Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Evan Boehm.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane said after the early stages of free agency that he’s not going to turn a blind eye to the open market with the 2020 NFL Draft slowly approaching.

He proved that to be true on Tuesday as the Bills signed offensive lineman Evan Boehm to a deal.

Despite returning many players in the trenches from last season, including all five of their starters, Buffalo decided the more, the merrier. While all the starters are back, the Bills won’t guarantee anyone a job. Boehm could turn into an important piece for the Bills somewhere on their depth chart, so learn more about him now..

Here’s eight things to know about new Bills offensive lineman Evan Boehm:

Bounced around

Boehm was a fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2016. Despite being a mid-round pick, he hasn’t found a home just yet. In those few short years, he’s now on his fifth team in the Bills and his movement ramped up in recent seasons.

In 2017, the 26-year-old lost a starting job with Cardinals after five games. Prior to the 2018 season, he was a bit of a surprise cut by the Cards. He didn’t have any suitors, though. Instead, he signed with the Los Angeles Rams via a practice squad spot. After a month there, he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts for the remainder of the 2018 season. After that, he was tenured a contract after the season by Indy, but moved once again at the end of training camp, this time via trade to the Miami Dolphins. After seeing some extended starting time (11 games) with the Dolphins last year, they let him walk in free agency and now he’s heading to Buffalo.

All things considered, he’s played in 55 games and made 21 starts in his career thus far, eight of which took place last season in Miami.

B/R gives Bills pre-draft grade of ‘A’ for offseason

Bleacher Report grades the Buffalo Bills 2020 offseason prior to the NFL Draft.

The Buffalo Bills have been one of the busier teams so far this offseason. Thus far, Bleacher Report is a big fan of the work the team has done.

B/R graded every NFL team’s offseason work prior to the 2020 NFL Draft and Buffalo earned a top-notch grade of ‘A.’ Here’s the breakdown:

The Buffalo Bills paid a heftier price to acquire Diggs than the Cardinals had to for Hopkins. But it was probably worth the cost (this year’s first-round pick plus three other selections).

Diggs has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in each of the past two seasons, and last year, he averaged nearly 18 yards per reception. Moreover, Diggs has been one of the best in contested catch rate over the past few years, according to Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus, which is a boon for quarterback Josh Allen.

Between Diggs, John Brown and Cole Beasley (who excelled in the slot last year), the Bills have the best receiving corps in the AFC East and arguably one of the best in football.

Not to mention, the team upgraded from Lawson to Mario Addison, who has recorded at least nine sacks and a pair of forced fumbles in each of the last four seasons. Yes, Addison is seven years older than Lawson. However, he has been more productive for a longer period, and his three-year deal (worth just over $30 million) has an out after 2020, with just $4 million in dead cap money, per Spotrac.

The loss of Alexander may hurt from a coverage perspective, but the Bills will still rely on a stiff pass rush after getting both Butler and Jefferson.

While the New England Patriots lost Tom Brady and face more uncertainty than they have in decades, the Bills’ moves could make them the best team in AFC East. That deserves a winning grade.

Really the only knock the Bills get here is their comparison via Hopkins. The Cardinals paid a much smaller price for him, running back David Johnson and a second-round pick, and he’s considered one of the league’s best wideouts. However, Hopkins is looking for a new deal from his new team. It doesn’t appear to this point that Diggs is.

Along with the Bills, the Broncos, Colts, Raiders, Chargers and Saints all also received an A mark. The only team B/R thinks knocked it out of the park with an A-plus is the Buccaneers, who landed quarterback Tom Brady.

Bills sign OL Evan Boehm

Offensive lineman Evan Boehm has signed with the Buffalo Bills, he announced via his social media account on Tuesday.

Offensive lineman Evan Boehm has signed with the Buffalo Bills, he announced via his social media accounts on Tuesday.

Boehm, 26, was a fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2016. After spending two seasons there, he’s since bounced around the NFL, suiting up for the Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins last season. The Dolphins traded for him last year.

Boehm appeared in 13 games for the Dolphins in 2019, including eight starts. In his career, Boehm has played both center and guard, a versatility the Bills will covet.

That skill set mimics Spencer Long. While both will hope to earn a starting spot along Buffalo’s offensive line, the two could be going head-to-head for a depth position as well during training camp.

While versatile, Boehm struggled last season per Pro Football Focus. His overall grade from the football analytics outlet was a 47.4 overall, far below average. In regard to Long, he graded out a 56.8 overall per PFF’s grades last year, but Boehm did see far more playing time, playing in 595 snaps a year ago compared to Long’s 173. Boehm allow one sack last year and notched three penalties.

Daryl Williams contract details with Bills

Buffalo decided to dip into the free agency pool and waters back in Carolina, signing former Panthers lineman Daryl Williams.

The Bills didn’t really need much attention along their offensive line, but better safe than sorry.

Buffalo decided to dip into the free agency pool and waters back in Carolina, signing former Panthers lineman Daryl Williams. The hope for the Bills is that Williams plays better than he did in 2019, and general manager Brandon Beane already said he thinks the Bills will use him better than the Panthers did last year.

But how much did that risk cost the Bills? According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Williams signed a very low-risk deal with Buffalo. His one-year deal is worth $2.25 million that game jump to $2.5 million in incentives.

Making the deal even more team-friendly is the guaranteed money. There’s only $250K attached to the deal. If Williams doesn’t make it out of training camp, he’ll be easy to move on from if Buffalo decided to do so.

Josh Allen calls Stefon Diggs QBs ‘best friend’

If Bills fans are excited for Stefon Diggs’ arrival, consider Josh Allen very excited.

If Bills fans are excited for Stefon Diggs’ arrival, consider Josh Allen very excited.

The quarterback spent a few minutes giving an offseason chat with reporters on Friday via video chat and gave his first analysis of his team’s acquisition of the wide receiver. As expected, there was some big-time praise for his new top target.

“He’s a big-time player and he’s got the respect of every defense out there. When he can run routes and double move and get open and consistently make plays, that becomes a quarterback’s best friend,” Allen said.

Allen also sees what many see in Diggs.

“He’s one of the best route runners in the league; he makes these unbelievable contested catches,” Allen said.

In general, the hope is for most players, especially quarterbacks, is that they see things all come together by Year 3 in their career. Allen knows those are his expectations as well.

“What we have going on is a special thing,” Allen said. “I understand how big of a year it is.”

Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane said he’s confident Allen will take that next step in 2020. His move to trade for Diggs shows that, too. But there’s certainly now some extra pressure on Allen to produce too.

But Diggs should help Allen’s output, and that of others as well.

The hope for the Bills is that Diggs now gives their quarterback a top option in the passing game. If things add up right, that should make Allen’s life easier next season. But Allen said John Brown and Cole Beasley are going to still be part of the plan as well. Diggs will help, not hurt there, he said.

“It’s going to open up some things in our offense and teams want to try and double team Stefon, it’ll open up other things,” Allen said.

Remaining April free agents left for Bills to consider

Could there be any players still available that could interest the Bills? There certainly are.

Most attention has turned to the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft at the end of April. But that doesn’t mean the free agent market has closed.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane recently spoke to reporters and admitted much of his attention is now on rookies. However, he also said that the young prospects don’t have his full attention. He’ll be sure to keep an eye on the open market, too.

Could there be any players still available that could interest the Bills? There certainly are.

Here are 10 players still on the open market for the Bills to consider:

RB Devonta Freeman

Age: 28

This connection between the Bills and Devonta Freeman have been made since before he was even cut by the Falcons this offseason.

Freeman could provide a complement to Devin Singeltary as a pass-catching option. He caught 59 catches in 2019 with the Falcons and 257 in his career, including 73 in the 2015 season. But by most accounts, Freeman took a step back last season. He only averaged 3.6 yards per carry last year, a career-low, but overall, Freeman is at 4.2 yards per carry for his career.

Still, Freeman could be a low-cost option to pair up with Singletary in Buffalo’s backfield. However, he’s not an overly-large player that would mix well with Singletary’s smaller, shifty game with the Bills and he’s not much of a special teams guy like TJ Yeldon would be. Overall as a back, Freeman has certainly had more success than Yeldon in his career, though.

15 takeaways from Brandon Beane’s post-free agency press conference

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane does a video press conference after free agency.

The “norm” is no more, and Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane changed things up on Thursday during his post-free agency press conference.

Beane discussed all the latest Bills news via video conference with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. That was one of the many topics Beane discussed in his hour-long chat.

In an effort to break all that down, here are 15 takeaways from Beane’s interview following free agency:

Stefon Diggs, because of course

It didn’t take long for Beane to get to one of the hottest topics of the entire NFL offseason. While many suspected the Bills were in the market for a top wide receiver, they confirmed that when trading for wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

In regard to the trade, Beane discussed trading for Diggs and its counterpoint. Why not just draft one? Beane said instead of doing so, he wanted a player that can impact things immediately. Diggs is not a prospect who will have a learning curve. He’ll come in and execute, once he learns the Bills offense.

And in an effort to quell any other negative feelings about the draft side of things, Beane explained that he considers Diggs his first-round pick this year, and said that the trade they settled for was more profitable for Buffalo.

“It is one of those things where I view it, ‘That’s our first-round pick,’” Beane said. “The way I’m viewing it with the draft capital that we moved to acquire him is that we moved up, let’s just say, four spots. We traded up there and we got him and we know the player. It’s just a more proven thing right now.”
