Why it’s better to overpay

The Bills say it time and time again, they want to build this thing through the draft. They’ve hit on late picks under Beane and McDermott, but the first rounder is always the crown jewel of the draft. Trading such a pick is risky and often scrutinized. It was when Beane sent his out for Diggs.

How does Beane feel about potentially “overpaying” for Diggs because of that first-round pick loss? He doesn’t really care and he explained why:

“If there’s a guy that I think is a real fit, if I overpaid a little bit, so be it. It’s better than waiting, sitting on my hands, and I’m not really fired up about a guy when my pick comes up, that’s just my viewpoint,” Beane said. “That’s how I see it.”

And that makes plenty of sense.
