Ranking LSU’s top-five quarterback recruits since 2000

LSU hasn’t produced many elite quarterbacks over the years, but it has certainly recruited a handful.

LSU is one of the most talented programs in college football year in and year out. The Tigers have produced countless NFL stars at positions all over the field.

They have an especially impressive track record when it comes to receivers, running backs and defensive backs. However, one position that LSU is not nearly as well known for is the quarterback spot.

While [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] looks to change that after taking the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl in his first fully healthy year as the starter, there hasn’t been a long list of notable players that were signal-callers for LSU.

With that being said, the Tigers have certainly recruited some talented quarterback prospects over the years. Here are the five best, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Report: Temple is attempting to poach Texas director of recruiting Brandon Harris

Will Brandon Harris choose to join Stan Drayton at Temple?

Texas is having to make a few changes to their staff this offseason, and another may be on the way. Continue reading “Report: Temple is attempting to poach Texas director of recruiting Brandon Harris”

Texas RB commit Jamarion Miller “trying to learn” from Bijan Robinson

Texas commit Jamarion Miller is set to become the next great RB to come out of Austin. Until then, he will try to learn from Bijan Robinson.

If there was ever any doubt, four-star running back Jamarion Miller is the best offensive recruit Texas currently has in their 2022 class. The No. 1 running back in the state was sought after by Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M at some points.

But with Stan Drayton being Stan Drayton, he was able to lock down another elite RB prospect.

Recruiting should be “easy” for Drayton, with how well Bijan Robinson has been performing in Steve Sarkisian’s offense. In just seven games, he has rushed for 934 yards and 10 touchdowns. Heisman consideration has even been thrown around.

The Longhorn commit has been noticing the success.

After watching the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma, Miller said the Texas offense can “dominate”, especially Robinson. Being able to watch and learn from the running back has been important to the current high school senior.

“He’s a great player and I am trying to learn from him and be the best,” Miller said. “He’s very powerful, he reads the holes right, and he does everything right on the field.”

Miller proved one way he can be similar to Robinson in Texas’ offense on Friday night against Mesquite Horn — in the passing game.

Two of his three touchdowns for Tyler Legacy against Mesquite Horn came from quarterback Bruce Bruckner. One was up the middle coming out of the backfield, while the other was an impressive snag from the outside.

When asked about the second touchdown, Miller’s first reaction was to laugh in somewhat disbelief.

“I don’t know how I caught that pass,” Miller said. “I had to make a play, just do what I could do.”

Speaking of touchdown receptions, true freshman Xavier Worthy has been another weapon Miller has been watching closely. Getting on the field early and making an impact has shown recruits opportunity is there in Austin.

“That boy is out there doing great,” the four-star said with a big smile on his face. “Watching what he did against OU, that was a great game for him. Especially for him to be a freshman. Look forward to him doing better.”

Miller was not able to make it down this past weekend for the Oklahoma State matchup as he had wished. There was a personal matter to attend to. But Texas’ staff is always encouraging their soon-to-be feature back to come down for the home games.

“I’m close to mainly the offensive staff, especially Coach Sark and Coach Drayt (Stan Drayton),” Miller said. “Brandon Harris, we always communicate with each other. They are always trying to get me to go down for a game.”

Seemingly locked in on his commitment to Texas, Miller will join a loaded backfield during his freshman season. Once Robinson makes his way to the league, the opportunity for carries will be available for another bEAST Texas running back.

On the 247Sports composite, Miller is the No. 105 overall prospect and No. 9 within the state of Texas. At the running back position, the four-star ranks at No. 17.

LOOK: Texas recruits attempt to get five-star WR Evan Stewart to Austin

Everything began with a few eyeball emojis — as things seem to do in this day and age.

Wednesday was a major turning point in Texas’ 2022 recruiting class. Four-star Brenen Thompson announced his commitment, instantly changing the dynamic of the Longhorns’ wide receiver room. He is one of the fastest prospects in the country, let alone the state.

A few hours later, Twitter was set on fire with the possibility of another elite wide receiver committing.

Everything began with a few eyeball emojis — as things seem to do in this day and age. Director of Recruiting Brandon Harris sent a few out, as did Courtney Helom. The player of interest? Five-star Evan Stewart.

Stewart decided to quote tweet with his own eyeball emojis and sent Texas recruiting Twitter into a madhouse. Soon thereafter, some of the top commits in the 2022 cycle began tweeting out #EvanStewarttoAustin, trying to get him back in the class.

He plans on being in Dallas for the Red River Shootout this weekend. A win against Oklahoma could be the final straw, forcing Stewart to shut down his recruitment and join Thompson and Armani Winfield as wide receiver commits.

Either way, we know Texas is trying its hardest and is not scared to keep it a secret.

Texas football hires former LSU QB as director of recruiting

Brandon Harris has a new gig.

Former LSU quarterback Brandon Harris has found a new gig.

The report originally came from Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, who released that Harris was set to be hired as Texas football’s director of recruiting.

With the move, Harris replaces Bryan Carrington, who departed to take a new job with the USC Trojans.

Carrington had praise for Harris when he responded to the news via Twitter.

He originally joined the Longhorns’ program back in 2019 when former head coach Tom Herman hired put him on staff as an offensive analyst. For the past two years, Harris has had a hand in the Texas offense, and it will be interesting to see how much of an impact he can make in his new position.

Report: Texas has zeroed in on new director of recruiting

Texas is expected to hire Brandon Harris as the director of recruiting, replacing Bryan Carrington who left to join USC.

Texas’ recruiting ace Bryan Carrington left to join USC as a quality control analyst earlier this month. The Longhorns have now zeroed in on his replacement.

Yahoo Sports college football reporter Pete Thamel reported on Monday that Brandon Harris, an offensive analyst at Texas, is expected to become the Longhorns director of recruiting.

Harris is one of the few members left over from Tom Herman’s support staff and he was lauded for being a key factor in the the combination of running backs Roschon Johnson and Bijan Robinson.

The former college quarterback has only been a part of the Texas support staff in regards to his post-playing career, but after just two years in Austin, he has quickly ascended to a coveted position within the program. That says enough about how well-respected he is among his peers.

After the early commitment from rising three-star linebacker Trevell Johnson and five-star quarterback Maalik Murphy, Harris will have a nice head start in his new role.

LSU-Auburn: Most pressing pregame storylines

Here’s a look into the biggest pregame storylines for LSU’s pivotal match-up against Auburn.

The LSU Tigers face SEC West division rival Auburn on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

LSU has won the last three games in the series, and can go for four straight against its division rival this weekend.

Here’s a look into the biggest pregame storylines for LSU’s pivotal match-up against Auburn.

TJ Finley to start at QB

LSU freshman quarterback T.J. Finley will earn his second straight start in place of junior signal-caller Myles Brennan, who is still out with an injury.

Last week against South Carolina, Finley shined under center going 17-of-21 for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw one interception, but the freshman still managed to lead the Tigers to victory.

Saturday will mark Finley’s first start away from Tiger Stadium. While there is limited capacity due to the coronavirus, Jordan-Hare Stadium will still be loud.

The deafening crowd at Auburn could cause issues for Finley at the start of the game. Heading into enemy territory for the first away start of a career is always challenging.

The last time LSU started a true freshman in their first road game as a starter, the Tigers coincidentally played at Auburn and lost 41-7. Former LSU quarterback Brandon Harris earned his first road start in Jordan-Hare in 2014 and the result wasn’t what he had anticipated.

While history may not repeat itself this time around, the change of pace in the game for Finley will be something to keep an eye on.

LSU’s best wins vs. South Carolina: 2015

The No. 7 LSU Tigers hosted the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2015 and won 45-24 for their 10th straight win in the series.

LSU and South Carolina met for the 21st time in program history in 2015.

The Tigers were No. 7 in the country with a 4-0 record entering the game. The Gamecocks entered with a 2-3 record, and an 0-3 record in the SEC.

Tigers quarterback Brandon Harris played a stellar game under center, going 18-of-28 for 228 yards and two touchdowns.

Derrius Guice carried the ball 16 times for 161 yards and a touchdown. Travin Dural led the Tigers in receptions with four catches for 109 yards and one touchdown.

For South Carolina, Perry Orth went 14-of-28 for 200 passing yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Gamecocks recorded just 283 yards of total offense. LSU had 624 yards on offense and 29 first downs.

LSU led 17-10 at the half, but quickly scored twice in the third quarter to take a commanding 31-10 lead. South Carolina then scored with 5:02 left in the quarter on a 36-yard pass from Orth to wide receiver Jerell Adams to trim the deficit to 31-17.

Tigers running back Darrel Williams scored on a one-yard run to put the Tigers up 38-17 before the Gamecocks cut the lead to 38-24 just before the end of the quarter.

LSU scored the final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a four-yard run by Guice to seal the 45-24 win with 13:15 left in the game.

This meeting marked the 10th straight win for LSU against South Carolina in the series.

The 2015 season for the LSU Tigers ended in an overall record of 9-3.

One of the best wins of that season came against the Florida Gators in Baton Rouge.

The Tigers entered the game ranked No. 6 in the country with a 5-0 record. Florida was No. 8 in the country with a 6-0 record.

Both teams were playing for the right for bragging rights and one win closer to a hopeful trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

The Gators led 7-0 after the first quarter after Jake McGee caught a four yard touchdown pass from quarterback Treon Harris for the first score of the game.

LSU responded in the second quarter as running back Leonard Fournette scored on a two yard touchdown run to tie the game 7-7. With 5:00 left before halftime, Malachi Dupre caught a nine yard pass from Brandon Harris to put the Tigers up 14-7. Nearly three minutes later, Fournette scored his second touchdown of the day from six yards out to give the Tigers a 21-7 lead.

With 1:34 left in the quarter, McGee caught his second touchdown of the day for the Gators on a 19-yard pass from Harris to pull the Gators within a 21-14 score.

But with 15 seconds left before the break, Dupre reeled in a 50 yard pass from Harris to give the Tigers a 28-14 lead heading into the locker room.

[lawrence-related id=10975]

Florida scored twice in the third quarter to tie the game. Kelvin Taylor ran it in from two yards out with 8:01 left in the third to cut the deficit to 28-21. With 1:04 left, Antonio Callaway caught a 72 yard touchdown from Harris to tie the game.

At the 10:40 mark of the fourth quarter, LSU kicker Trent Domingue scored on a 16-yard run to put the Tigers up 35-28.

That score by Domingue would be enough to give LSU their sixth victory of the season and defeat the Gators for the second consecutive season.
