Big Ten Football 2019 Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff picks after week 13

Things are coming into focus as the Big Ten football season ends. Here’s the latest bowl projections and College Football Playoff spots.

The Big Ten has a rich, rich history in historical bowl games, and the expectations are set for that to continue in 2019. Here at Buckeyes Wire, we’re keeping with tradition and giving you a peek at where we think all the teams in the conference will end up when all the dust settles on the season.

We reassess after each week of games and project based on what we’ve seen.

The season might be coming to an end here over the next week, but there’s still a lot that could, and probably will happen during the last couple of weeks.

Keep in mind that these scenarios are very complicated with projecting when there’s not enough teams from certain conferences with tie-ins, and the agreements with bowls to not repeat the same program over a certain time-frame if at all possible.

Here’s a look at the projections now after twelve weeks of results on the field.

One year ago today, Ohio State beat Michigan 62-39

Let’s recap the one-year anniversary of last year[s 62-39 game, the most points Ohio State has ever scored against Michigan.

Because of the way the calendar lines up this year, one year ago today was actually the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That day provided us with one of the greatest beatdowns in Ohio State-Michigan rivalry history. Not in terms of margin of victory, no. The 23-point win is not even close to the widest margin in the rivalry. What was historic, though, was the 62 points the Buckeyes put up.

In the 114-game history of the rivalry, a team has put up more than 50 points twice. Before last year, the only other time it happened was when Michigan scored 58 in 1946. The Buckeyes scored exactly 50 points twice in the 1960s (1961 and 1968). Other than that, no team has hit the half-century mark.

The impressive win might not have been enough to send Ohio State to the College Football Playoff last year, but it did lead to Urban Meyer getting a pretty solid sendoff in his first and only career Rose Bowl. (Unless he ends up taking the USC job at some point, which so many of the rumors somehow expect he will do.)

It was not a perfect season for the Buckeyes last year, but it was a pretty near-perfect rivalry beatdown. And, honestly, is there much more that a Buckeye fan can ask for?

To relive the game in short, BTN has a great video on Twitter:

Big Ten football power rankings after week 13: Solidifying spots

There’s just one more game left in the regular season and after an interesting Saturday, we’ve got the latest in our Big Ten Power Rankings.

There’s now just one week of football to go in the Big Ten, and we are as close to ever at knowing which teams are going to Indy, which are positioning themselves for bowl games, and which one’s are still alive for some pretty big things.

Ohio State clinched its spot in the Big Ten Championship Game after a hard fought win over a top ten Penn State, Michigan keeps winning, and the West now comes down to Wisconsin and Minnesota.

As we do each week, here’s your Big Ten football power rankings after the latest round of games. As always, give me a break on these, I ran across the Donald Trump impeachment hearings and couldn’t turn it off. Shame on me.

14. Rutgers – (Last week 14)

Rutgers has one more shot to get a Big Ten win. It’s against Penn State next week. The Scarlet Knights will finish winless in the conference.

13. Maryland – (Last week 13)

Boy has this team quit on the season. It got blitzed by Nebraska. Literally nobody has gotten blitzed by Nebraska up until now.

12. Northwestern – (Last week 12)

Pat Fitzgerald is going to blow a gasket in one of these press conferences coming up. He’s about had it with this team and you can bet he’s ready to turn the page after yet another loss, this time to Minnesota. In hindsight, it might not be a good idea to play a team that likes to row boats on the shores of Lake Michigan.

11. Nebraska – (Last week 11)

The Cornhuskers looked like the darkhorse we thought in the West Division against Maryland. But, since the Terps aren’t good at the American version of the sport this year, we’ll pause on that. One more win and Scott Frost can take his team to the postseason.

Ohio State beats Penn State: 5 things we learned

It wasn’t pretty, but Ohio State fought through some weather and turnovers to beat Penn State. Here’s five things we learned.

It may not have gone exactly as Ohio State would have liked, but it’s still a W in the win column. There were some uncharacteristic turnovers, a little rain and wind, and some key penalties that kept Penn State in the game, but in the end the Buckeyes did what they needed to stay undefeated.

With it, Ohio State clinches the outright Big Ten East title and will head to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game for the third straight year. It doesn’t even matter what happens against Michigan next week, at least for all those things to happen.

But more on that later.

Here’s five things we learned about Ohio State in a 28-17 victory over a top ten Penn State team.

It took a lot for Penn State to even be in the game

With all due respect to Penn State, Ohio State was clearly the better and more talented team. It took three turnovers, some uncharacteristic penalties, and almost every single replay review going the way of the Nittany Lions to even keep this thing in shouting distance.

OSU outgained PSU 417 yards to 227, ran all over a Penn State defense that was one of the best in the country, yet this thing was still a game into the fourth quarter. That’s because Justin Fields fumbled twice, J.K. Dobbins dropped it on the turf once, and some bounces and plays went the other way.

Frankly, Ohio State is probably at least three touchdowns better on any other day. But, credit the Nittany Lions for clawing and fighting in this one.

Ohio State vs. Penn State: How and where to watch and listen to the game Saturday

We’ve got all the information you need on how and where to watch, listen and stream the Ohio State vs. Penn State Saturday.

It’s a big one folks. No. 2 Ohio state hosts No. 8 Penn State in Columbus and the winner is going to be your Big East Division winner most likely.

This game has been decided by a total of five points over the last three years, and it’s a series that is a budding rivalry of sorts. It’ll never get to the level of Ohio State and Michigan, but there’s no denying the level of competitiveness this one has gotten to.

The game is set for noon, and it’s the only one most folks will be watching in that window. Hopefully you’ve carved out the time to take this one in, and if you’re looking for information on where and how to watch, stream, or listen to this titanic struggle, we’ve got all the information you need.

ACC Betting Advice, Final Thoughts

Let’s not get too cranked up about Liberty, and let’s not get too into the idea that Virginia is looking ahead to the game that actually does matter against Virginia Tech. Remember, this is the same Liberty team that was shutout 24-0 by Syracuse and and lost by ten a Rutgers team that’s really, realty bad at college football. The Cavs -17 is nice and low.

Yeah, Notre Dame has the ability to turn the lights out on a one-dimensional team – like it did last week against Navy – but Boston College doesn’t seem to have problems only doing one thing really, really well. Liked it at BC getting 18, love it at 21.5.

Don’t be that guy who bets on FCS vs. FBS games … unless the line on the Mercer-North Carolina game goes up to 40 or more. It’s at UNC -39 right now, and that’s about right. The Tar Heels will win easily, but the Bears are just good enough to score a touchdown or two and keep this from blowing up.

Home team, slightly better defense, a bit more offensive diversity, playing better overall … don’t think too hard about this Virginia Tech is only giving away 3.5 at home against Pitt – it moved up from 1 and will end up around 4.5. Be careful with the point total that’s right at around 46, but is moving.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Syracuse showed up against Duke last week, came up with a slew of takeaways, and won with stunning ease. That’s not happening again on the road at Louisville. However, the Cardinals aren’t going to make this easy. You’re fine at UofL at 9.5, but wait until the last second – it’ll go up to at least 10 by gametime.

Miami going down the road to play at FIU seems like it should be a moment for the Group of Fiver. All of these guys know each other, FIU will get up for the game at a whole other level, and … whatever. The Canes are going to care about this, too. FIU hasn’t beaten anyone and was rolled by 30 against FAU and by 33 by a Middle Tennessee team that just lost to Rice. The Canes are a bit of a gift at 20.5.

I have NO idea why I like Duke getting 7 against Wake Forest, and it’s scaring me that others are jumping on this, too. It was at 6.5 to start, moved up to 7.5, and is now coming back down. The only reason to like this? Duke is better than it’s been playing, and – 44-10 win over NC State aside – Wake Forest really might not be the same without WR Sage Surratt.

Ohio State vs. Penn State: 5 reasons the Buckeyes win

Ohio State and Penn State are set to square off in a top ten college football matchup in the Big Ten. Here’s why we think the Buckeyes win.

We’ve said this before, but now we really mean it. Everything up until now has been pointing to this very game. It’s No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 8 Penn State and there’s a slew of things on the line. If the Buckeyes win, they clinch the outright Big Ten East title and an all-expenses paid trip to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game.

If Penn State wins, it will most likely get at least a share of the Big Ten East title because it plays a Rutgers team next week that’s still trying to figure out how to play American football. Couple that with owning the head-to-head tiebreaker over OSU, and it would be off to Indy even if the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines a week later.

Both keep a shot at the College Football Playoff alive with a win. Penn State would more or less be eliminated with a loss, and Ohio State would have to have some things break the right way for it to still be out front in the mix.

So who’s going to win this titanic struggle between lions and nuts? Here’s five reasons we believe the Buckeyes will walk out of the ‘Shoe victorious Saturday evening when all the shouting and athletic feats of endeavors end.

Ohio State vs. Penn State Enemy Territory preview. Get to know the Nittany Lions

Ohio State is set to do battle with a top ten Nittany Lion squad. We’ve got all you need to know about Penn State.

[jwplayer cqrtEFDS-o2AELQvx]

Before every game, we provide a preview of Ohio State football’s opponent for the upcoming week. It’s a twelve game slate to the regular season, so there’s plenty to talk about, and plenty of opponents to get up to speed on.

Of course, some you’ll know better than others.

So, if you want to impress your friends while watching the game, we’ve got your cheat code right here. We do the research, you drop nuggets. You win on Saturdays. It’s as simple as that.

Ohio State’s eleventh game of the year is against a Nittany Lion team that’s still looking to do some pretty big things in 2019. It still controls its own destiny towards an East Division crown and Big Ten title, but it absolutely has to win Saturday in the ‘Shoe.

Big Ten and big game NCAA football 2019 expert picks and predictions for week 13

Our expert contributors pick all the Big Ten and biggest college football games against the spread and straight up for week 13.

The college football calendar is turning ever so quickly, and late conference games are now going to determine everything in the Big Ten and around the country. We now have true contenders, those positioning for bowl games, and those teams looking to play spoiler.

As normal, we’re predicting every Big Ten game for the week straight-up and against the spread, but since the slate is dominated by conference play towards the end of the season here, we’ll do the same for the six games deemed to be the biggest nationally each week. We’re the judge and jury on that one. It’s called our Pick Six.

A a reminder, if there’s an *next to the pick, that means the team will win, but not cover. Also, we get our odds from BetMGM.

INSTRUCTIONS: Make your pick against the spread. For example …
– If you think Ohio State will win -3.5 over Michigan: OSU
– If you think Ohio State will win outright: OSU
– If you think Ohio State will win, but NOT cover: OSU*
– If there’s a tie, George Washington settles it via the ‘ole quarter coin-flip.

Here we go for a big week thirteen, but first, the standings that will be updated each week after all the games. Onward we go. Just keep picking, just keep picking …
