Ohio State beats Penn State: 5 things we learned

It wasn’t pretty, but Ohio State fought through some weather and turnovers to beat Penn State. Here’s five things we learned.

It may not have gone exactly as Ohio State would have liked, but it’s still a W in the win column. There were some uncharacteristic turnovers, a little rain and wind, and some key penalties that kept Penn State in the game, but in the end the Buckeyes did what they needed to stay undefeated.

With it, Ohio State clinches the outright Big Ten East title and will head to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game for the third straight year. It doesn’t even matter what happens against Michigan next week, at least for all those things to happen.

But more on that later.

Here’s five things we learned about Ohio State in a 28-17 victory over a top ten Penn State team.

It took a lot for Penn State to even be in the game

With all due respect to Penn State, Ohio State was clearly the better and more talented team. It took three turnovers, some uncharacteristic penalties, and almost every single replay review going the way of the Nittany Lions to even keep this thing in shouting distance.

OSU outgained PSU 417 yards to 227, ran all over a Penn State defense that was one of the best in the country, yet this thing was still a game into the fourth quarter. That’s because Justin Fields fumbled twice, J.K. Dobbins dropped it on the turf once, and some bounces and plays went the other way.

Frankly, Ohio State is probably at least three touchdowns better on any other day. But, credit the Nittany Lions for clawing and fighting in this one.

ACC Betting Advice, Final Thoughts

Let’s not get too cranked up about Liberty, and let’s not get too into the idea that Virginia is looking ahead to the game that actually does matter against Virginia Tech. Remember, this is the same Liberty team that was shutout 24-0 by Syracuse and and lost by ten a Rutgers team that’s really, realty bad at college football. The Cavs -17 is nice and low.

Yeah, Notre Dame has the ability to turn the lights out on a one-dimensional team – like it did last week against Navy – but Boston College doesn’t seem to have problems only doing one thing really, really well. Liked it at BC getting 18, love it at 21.5.

Don’t be that guy who bets on FCS vs. FBS games … unless the line on the Mercer-North Carolina game goes up to 40 or more. It’s at UNC -39 right now, and that’s about right. The Tar Heels will win easily, but the Bears are just good enough to score a touchdown or two and keep this from blowing up.

Home team, slightly better defense, a bit more offensive diversity, playing better overall … don’t think too hard about this Virginia Tech is only giving away 3.5 at home against Pitt – it moved up from 1 and will end up around 4.5. Be careful with the point total that’s right at around 46, but is moving.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Syracuse showed up against Duke last week, came up with a slew of takeaways, and won with stunning ease. That’s not happening again on the road at Louisville. However, the Cardinals aren’t going to make this easy. You’re fine at UofL at 9.5, but wait until the last second – it’ll go up to at least 10 by gametime.

Miami going down the road to play at FIU seems like it should be a moment for the Group of Fiver. All of these guys know each other, FIU will get up for the game at a whole other level, and … whatever. The Canes are going to care about this, too. FIU hasn’t beaten anyone and was rolled by 30 against FAU and by 33 by a Middle Tennessee team that just lost to Rice. The Canes are a bit of a gift at 20.5.

I have NO idea why I like Duke getting 7 against Wake Forest, and it’s scaring me that others are jumping on this, too. It was at 6.5 to start, moved up to 7.5, and is now coming back down. The only reason to like this? Duke is better than it’s been playing, and – 44-10 win over NC State aside – Wake Forest really might not be the same without WR Sage Surratt.

Ohio State vs. Penn State: 5 reasons the Buckeyes win

Ohio State and Penn State are set to square off in a top ten college football matchup in the Big Ten. Here’s why we think the Buckeyes win.

We’ve said this before, but now we really mean it. Everything up until now has been pointing to this very game. It’s No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 8 Penn State and there’s a slew of things on the line. If the Buckeyes win, they clinch the outright Big Ten East title and an all-expenses paid trip to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game.

If Penn State wins, it will most likely get at least a share of the Big Ten East title because it plays a Rutgers team next week that’s still trying to figure out how to play American football. Couple that with owning the head-to-head tiebreaker over OSU, and it would be off to Indy even if the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines a week later.

Both keep a shot at the College Football Playoff alive with a win. Penn State would more or less be eliminated with a loss, and Ohio State would have to have some things break the right way for it to still be out front in the mix.

So who’s going to win this titanic struggle between lions and nuts? Here’s five reasons we believe the Buckeyes will walk out of the ‘Shoe victorious Saturday evening when all the shouting and athletic feats of endeavors end.

Big Ten and big game NCAA football 2019 expert picks and predictions for week 13

Our expert contributors pick all the Big Ten and biggest college football games against the spread and straight up for week 13.

The college football calendar is turning ever so quickly, and late conference games are now going to determine everything in the Big Ten and around the country. We now have true contenders, those positioning for bowl games, and those teams looking to play spoiler.

As normal, we’re predicting every Big Ten game for the week straight-up and against the spread, but since the slate is dominated by conference play towards the end of the season here, we’ll do the same for the six games deemed to be the biggest nationally each week. We’re the judge and jury on that one. It’s called our Pick Six.

A a reminder, if there’s an *next to the pick, that means the team will win, but not cover. Also, we get our odds from BetMGM.

INSTRUCTIONS: Make your pick against the spread. For example …
– If you think Ohio State will win -3.5 over Michigan: OSU
– If you think Ohio State will win outright: OSU
– If you think Ohio State will win, but NOT cover: OSU*
– If there’s a tie, George Washington settles it via the ‘ole quarter coin-flip.

Here we go for a big week thirteen, but first, the standings that will be updated each week after all the games. Onward we go. Just keep picking, just keep picking …

First up … Big Ten early games

With a win Saturday, Ohio State clinches the Big Ten East, spot in Big Ten Championship Game

With a win over Penn State on Saturday, Ohio State clinches the outright Big Ten East title and a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game.

We know it’ll be a top ten matchup Saturday when Ohio State hosts Penn State. We also know the Nittany Lions have posed more challenges for the Buckeyes than maybe any other team in the Big Ten over the last few years. They’ve only knocked the door down one time, but almost every game has been a one possession affair since James Franklin’s been stomping around in Happy Valley.

We also know there will be three national, live shows all converging on Columbus to preview the game, and that says all you need to know about the stakes of this one. There are East Division title, Big Ten Championship, and College Football Playoff implications on the line.

But first things first, what’s front and center is that a win by Ohio State on Saturday over Penn State clinches the Big Ten East outright and a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game. It would be the Buckeyes third straight appearance in Indy.

An OSU win would result in the Nittany Lions’ second loss in conference play, and since Michigan has already been turned back twice, even a loss in Ann Arbor the following week would still leave Ohio State as the only one-loss squad in the East Division.

Surprisingly, no tie-breaker needed this time around.

If however, somehow, someway, Penn State finds a way to beat the Buckeyes, it would more than likely mean a trip to Indy for the Nittany Lions. Their next game would be against Rutgers — almost assuredly a win — with the tiebreaker for the head-to-head in hand.

So hopefully Ohio State stays hungry, focused, and intent on continuing to make history and we you can celebrate Saturday night by booking a trip to Indianapolis.

All the games matter, it’s what makes college football so special, but some games matter just a little more. For Ohio State, it’s been business as usual for the first ten games of the season, but now the real fun begins.

Penn State comes to town on Saturday for another highly touted matchup which will basically decide the Big Ten East champion. With a win, the Buckeyes clinch the division crown. Should the Nittany Lions pull the upset,  they’d still need to take care of Rutgers in the season finale which wouldn’t be much of a problem.

Penn State has become somewhat of a secondary rivalry to TTUN and has provided much more drama in the past few seasons than the Maize and Blue. In 2016, it was PSU pulling the upset with a blocked field goal in the final moments of the game. The 2017 and 2018 editions saw two of the most epic comebacks in Buckeye history.

The stakes are high once again this year. So much so, ESPN’s College Game Day will be in town, along with FOX’s Big Noon Kick crew and BTN’s Tailgate pregame show. You know something special is in the air when all three converge on the same scene.

Will the Buckeye’s finally be tested or steamroll another opponent on their way to the College Football Playoff? Let’s take a closer look.
