Why Ohio State Will Win

Penn State hit a wall.

It looked like it was about to turn things around with a run of five wins in seven games, but close losses to Michigan State and Nebraska – not exactly the stars of the Big Ten show – made it three losses in the last four and four in the last six.

What has gone wrong? The Nittany Lions are struggling from the field – they haven’t hit 40% of their shots in any of the last four games and now they have to deal with a defense that’s good enough to keep the pain going.

Penn State just doesn’t move the ball around well enough on one end, and it’s the worst team in the Big Ten a field goal percentage defense on the other side.

Why Penn State Will Win

The Nittany Lions might allow too many points and too many easy shots, but they’re great at coming up with steals and forcing enough mistakes to make up for it.

No, the offense doesn’t generate the extra pass for easy points, but Ohio State isn’t great at moving the ball around, either. As long as the defense is able to come up with the rebounds on the chances it gets, and if the threes are falling early …

What’s Going To Happen

The threes aren’t going to fall for the Nittany Lions.

Ohio State’s defense is one of the best in the Big Ten from three, and Penn State has’t been able to get to 30% from the outside since late January.

The Nittany Lions are way overdue for a huge performance – especially with a good home win – but Ohio State has played way too well over the last month and it’s way too strong on the road.

Why Penn State Will Win

The Nittany Lions got back among the living with a two-game winning streak when the shooting touch started to come back a bit. They don’t make a whole slew of mistakes, they’re great at guarding from three, and they’re forcing a ton of turnovers.

Ohio State doesn’t force any mistakes, it doesn’t move the ball around all that well, and it hasn’t been able to puck up the slack when the shooting isn’t there. The Buckeyes are 0-3 in the Big Ten when hitting fewer than 40% of their shots, and …

Why Ohio State Will Win

Yeah, Penn State has a hard time keeping teams from scoring.

Oh sure, it’ll force mistakes and generate transition points, but it’s a done deal if the Buckeyes come out hot like they did in the win over Wisconsin. This is a great-shooting team that attacks the rim and finds ways to hit the tough shots. Penn State can’t do that.

The Nittany Lions were great from three early in the season, but they’ve slow that down, reduced the bombs away attitude, and lately, it’s been a plus, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Nittany Lions aren’t going to outshoot the Buckeyes.

Ohio State can get points inside and out from a variety of spots, and it’ll get up fast and keep coming up with the big shot when needed to stay ahead. Penn State will start bombing away to try keeping up, but that won’t be enough.

Ohio State vs. Penn State 2020 Football Preview And Prediction

All-Time Series: Ohio State leads 20-14
Last Meeting: Ohio State defeated Penn State 28-17 in 2019

After a somewhat slow start, Ohio State took care of Nebraska the way we  thought they would. There is definitely work to do, especially on the offensive and defensive lines, but, overall, the Buckeyes looked as good as advertised.

A trip to Happy Valley looms this week, although the Nittany Lions don’t seem quite as fierce after a loss to Indiana and the absence of the vaunted “white out” crowd. Nonetheless, these two programs have slugged it out over the past several years and nothing can be taken for granted.

All the games matter, it’s what makes college football so special, but some games matter just a little more. For Ohio State, it’s been business as usual for the first ten games of the season, but now the real fun begins.

Penn State comes to town on Saturday for another highly touted matchup which will basically decide the Big Ten East champion. With a win, the Buckeyes clinch the division crown. Should the Nittany Lions pull the upset,  they’d still need to take care of Rutgers in the season finale which wouldn’t be much of a problem.

Penn State has become somewhat of a secondary rivalry to TTUN and has provided much more drama in the past few seasons than the Maize and Blue. In 2016, it was PSU pulling the upset with a blocked field goal in the final moments of the game. The 2017 and 2018 editions saw two of the most epic comebacks in Buckeye history.

The stakes are high once again this year. So much so, ESPN’s College Game Day will be in town, along with FOX’s Big Noon Kick crew and BTN’s Tailgate pregame show. You know something special is in the air when all three converge on the same scene.

Will the Buckeye’s finally be tested or steamroll another opponent on their way to the College Football Playoff? Let’s take a closer look.
