A Tale of Two Running Backs: Bijan Robinson vs. Breece Hall

How Bijan Robinson and Breece Hall compare this season.

Texas and Iowa State are currently both on the outside looking in for the Big 12 championship game.

Although their teams have underwhelmed as a whole, preseason all-conference running backs Bijan Robinson and Breece Hall have each lived up to the hype, as they currently sit atop the conference in rushing. They’re both the focal points of their offenses, and if they get going, each team is hard to stop.

With Hall likely headed to the NFL next season, this will be the last time these two special players square off against each other in college.

“They’re two dynamic playmakers, and two guys that have elite talent that will keep them playing football for a long time,” Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said when asked about the running back matchup.

Robinson and Hall have very similar styles of play. The star running backs each have great vision with the agility and strength to break tackles with ease, along with enough speed to score from anywhere on the field. An added bonus is how they excel in the receiving game.

The stat sheet backs up how close the two are on paper.

  • Total yards/season: Robinson 1,178, Hall 1,193
  • Touchdowns/season: Robinson 14, Hall 13
  • Carries/season: Robinson 163, Hall 179
  • Yards/carry: Robinson 5.9, Hall 5.5
  • Rushing yards/game: Robinson 121, Hall 123

Anytime two of the best players in the country are on the field at the same time, it is exciting to watch. Saturday should be no different. This game has the feel that whichever defense can slow the opposing running back down more will win.

Where does Texas RB Bijan Robinson rank among the top rushers in the Big 12?

Big 12 rushing leaders through Week 4.

The Big 12 has been full of elite level running backs this season, as it seems that almost every team has at least one elite ball carrier.

Typically when people think of the Big 12, their minds immediately go to the passing game, which at its prime consisted of seemingly every quarterback throwing for over 300 yards and five touchdowns a game.

While the quarterback play within the conference has not been as star-studded as we have grown accustomed to, the running backs in the Big 12 have absolutely been lighting each of their opponents on fire.

The Big 12 may have the best group of running backs of any conference in college football, and many of the top teams within the conference, like Texas and Baylor, have heavily relied on their elite running back rooms to take the pressure off inexperienced quarterbacks.

Let’s take a look at where Texas running back Bijan Robinson lands among the Big 12 rushing leaders through Week 4:

Two Longhorns listed among ‘Mount Rushmore’ of Big 12 backs

Texas has had their fair share of top running backs but where do they rank among the ‘Mount Rushmore’ of Big 12 running backs?

During one of the weirdest offseasons in recent memory, the amount of football news has been minimal. Well expect for the constant updates on conference scheduling, COVID-19 updates and award watchlists. One good topic of conversation revolves around the “Mount Rushmore of” insert topic here. Heartland College Sports gave their Mount Rushmore of Big 12 running backs.

What they said

TEXAS RUNNING BACK RICKY WILLIAMS (1995-1998)

Even though Ricky played his freshman season in the Southwestern Conference, it would be insane to leave him off this list. From his sophomore season in 1996 to his senior season in 1998, he was arguably the best running back in college football during that time. Not only is Ricky the all-time leading rusher at Texas but he is the second all-time leading rusher in Big 12 history rushing for over 5,200 yards and 64 rushing touchdowns. However, do not forget that he almost racked up nearly 1,000 receiving yards as well. Oh yeah, in case you forgot, he won the Heisman trophy back in 1998.

TEXAS RUNNING BACK CEDRIC BENSON (2001-2004)

I feel like people sometimes forget just how good Cedric Benson was in college. From his freshman season in 2001 to his senior year in 2004, Cedric rushed for at least 1,000 yards and in his final three years in Austin, he never rushed for less than 1,293 yards in a season. And due to Ricky Williams playing a year in the Southwestern Conference, Cedric Benson is the all-time leading rusher in Big 12 history with 5,540 rushing yards and 69 rushing scores.

It should really come as no surprise to see both Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson are both part of the Mount Rushmore of Big 12 running backs. Williams an obvious member given how dominant he was and the fact that he won a Heisman. Benson is the all-time leading rusher in Big 12 history and he was one of the most consistent backs each and every season.
