Oklahoma drops one spot in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Despite the win, the Sooners fell one spot as Oregon replaces Oklahoma at no. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Oklahoma Sooners got the win over Big 12 foe West Virginia, but it was hardly convincing, and for the second straight week, they won a game despite the offense struggling to score.

West Virginia’s defense is good, but Oklahoma failed to capitalize on opportunities where receivers ran open or got behind the defense. The offensive line struggled in both the run game and in pass protection, and Spencer Rattler didn’t look like the same player he was last year. And yet, despite all of that, the Sooners’ offense came up with a drive at the end of the game to get the win on a Gabe Brkic 30-yard field goal.

Despite the win, the Sooners dropped one spot in the poll as Oregon replaced Oklahoma at no. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

On the bright side, the Oklahoma defense continues to prove they’re legit as they held a good Mountaineers running game in check.

Oklahoma State climbs four spots in the poll while Baylor makes a big jump and joins the top 25 for the first time this season. Even with their big win over Texas Tech, the Texas Longhorns sit on the outside looking in as the top vote-getter among “other teams receiving votes.”

A look at the full coaches poll after week four’s games.

Baylor Bears College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Yeah, the whole Baylor offense thing didn’t exactly work in Dave Aranda’s first season. There was an attempt to change things around a bit, but the results were painful – the program had NO time to work in the global pandemic offseason.

The Bears finished 118th in the nation in total offense averaging just 310 yards per game, and the scoring didn’t get better as the year went on and the O failed to get past 24 points six of the nine games. However, there’s plenty of experience returning, a full offseason, and a new offensive coordinator in Jeff Grimes from BYU to get this going.

First things first …

Baylor has to settle its quarterback situation, and Grimes doesn’t have a Zach Wilson to work with. Longtime starter Charlie Brewer is off to Utah, but backups Jacob Zeno and Gerry Bohanon are around with a little time logged in. True freshman Kyron Drones might be a factor in the fall camp battle for the open gig.

The receivers are there to start opening things up a bit more. The trio of RJ Sneed, Gavin Holmes and Tyquan Thornton has one of the best combinations of experience and explosion in the Big 12 – and potential. Getting back good receiving TE Ben Sims helps, too. Now the passing game has to work the pop and big plays weren’t there.

The ground game has to be better, and the offensive front that struggled in pass protection has to be a whole lot stronger despite losing three starters. The transfer portal should help with a few new parts coming in – Grant Miller from Vanderbilt and Jacob Gall from Buffalo – to push for jobs along with veterans Connor Galvin at tackle and Xavier Newman-Johnson at one guard spot.

The running backs are there to do a whole lot more for an attack that averaged just 2.7 yards per carry. 5-8 sophomore Craig Williams is a quick back who averaged 7.5 yards per carry with 197 yards in just four games.

2018 and 2019 leading rusher John Lovett left for Penn State, but 230-pound Qualan Jones and 215-pound super-senior Trestan Ebner return in a good rotation.

Baylor Bears 2021 football schedule, analysis, and best and worst case scenarios.

Baylor Bears Football Schedule 2021

2021 Big 12 Football Schedule

Sept. 4 at Texas State

Sept. 11 Texas Southern

Sept. 18 at Kansas

Sept. 25 Iowa State

Oct. 2 at Oklahoma State

Oct. 9 West Virginia

Oct. 16 BYU

Oct. 23 OPEN DATE

Oct. 30 Texas

Nov. 6 at TCU

Nov. 13 Oklahoma

Nov. 20 at Kansas State

Nov. 27 Texas Tech

Baylor Football Schedule Analysis: With all due respect to BYU, Baylor gets one of the easiest non-conference schedules in the Big 12. Not only is it not bad, but the team doesn’t have to leave the great state of Texas, starting out at Texas State and getting BYU at home.

If that’s not enough of a positive, there’s no complaining whatsoever about getting Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas in Waco, and the team doesn’t have two road games in a row all season. This year, the Bears get an extra Big 12 home game, closes out against Texas Tech, and one of the road games is at Kansas.

Baylor Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: The Bears start out rolling going 3-0 with ease before making a massive statement against Iowa State at home. There’s a miss against a team like Oklahoma State and/or TCU on the road, but there’s an upset over either Texas or Oklahoma before closing strong with wins at Kansas State and Texas Tech to at least be in the mix for a Big 12 title spot.

Baylor Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: Nothing goes right, and that includes a shocking loss at Kansas to kick off the Big 12 season. The team plays well, but it can’t seem to buy a break in home losses to Iowa State and West Virginia before getting rocked by BYU. Even in the worst case scenario there’s a win or two through the Big 12 season, but it’s a losing campaign.

Four-star outside linebacker Terrence Cooks announces commitment date

Four-star OLB Terrence Cooks announced he will be committing on Saturday, Nov. 14. His final choices are Baylor, Georgia, LSU, and Texas.

Recruiting for the 2021 class has been rough for Texas but it has a chance to get better this weekend. Four-star outside linebacker Terrence Cooks announced he will be committing on Saturday, Nov. 14. His final choices are Baylor, Georgia, LSU, and Texas.

Coming out of Pearland, Texas, Cooks is the No. 20 outside linebacker in the country according to the 247Sports composite. Nationally, he ranks No. 302 and No. 20 inside the Lone Star state.

The Longhorns lead the way on the crystal ball with six predictions. Lead experts Mike Roach, Gabe Brooks, and Nick Harris have given an average combined confidence level of seven in favor of Texas.

Morice Blackwell is the only other outside linebacker currently committed in the 2021 class. He and Cooks would combine for great potential for linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler.

Cooks has been dealing with an injury during most of his senior season. Last season, he recorded 72 tackles, two of which were for a loss, and forced three fumbles.

Attending Shadow Creek High School, Cooks used to play with current true freshman defensive back Xavion Alford. The two won a 5A-DI state championship in 2019.

Texas Longhorns vs. Baylor Bears: Who are the experts predicting to win?

UT’s season is on the line when Baylor travels to Austin for a Big 12 showdown, here are who the experts are picking for Saturday’s matchup.

Texas’ season is on the line when Baylor travels to Austin on Saturday afternoon. The Longhorns are coming off back-to-back losses to TCU and Oklahoma to sit 1-2 in the Big 12. A loss would end any remaining chance Texas has of making the conference championship game.

In the fourth year of the Tom Herman era, this is a must-win game if he wants to keep his job past this season. After the Red River Shootout, there were questions brought up about his job security. A win against the Bears would keep him safe for now.

For Baylor, this will be their first game since Oct. 3 on the road to West Virginia as Dave Aranda’s squad has been dealing with COVID-19 complications. It led to the cancelation of the Oklahoma State matchup originally scheduled for Oct. 17.

Here are who the experts are picking for Texas vs Baylor:

Horns247 Predictions

Bobby Burton – Texas 24, Baylor 20

Chip Brown – Texas 27, Baylor 23

Jeff Howe – Texas 37, Baylor 30

Taylor Estes – Texas 35, Baylor 31

Mike Roach – Texas 34, Baylor 28

Texas Football preseason preview: Baylor Bears

Baylor is coming off a historic 2019 season and will be looking to repeat it this season. Here is a 2020 season preview for the Bears:

Baylor was a surprise team in all of college football last season, finishing with an 11-3 record. The Bears made it to the Big 12 championship game and the Sugar Bowl, before losing both matchups to Oklahoma and Georgia respectively.

From a Longhorn perspective, Baylor dominated Texas from start to finish in their 2019 matchup. Tim Beck’s offense struggle mightily, only scoring 10 points. Seven of them came from a Daniel Young touchdown with 0:01 left on the clock. Sam Ehlinger was held to just 200 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.

Coming off its historic season, Baylor will be slightly pivoting with a coaching change. Matt Rhule had been the head coach in Waco for three seasons and turned the Bears around from 1-11 and into a participant in a New Year’s Six bowl game.

It could be seen as a transition year for Baylor but if new head coach Dave Aranda has anything to say about it, his team will be back in the thick of the Big 12 championship hunt. A veteran quarterback mixed with a preseason first-team All-Big 12 star on defense gives Baylor hope in 2020.

Here is a 2020 season preview of Texas’ Big 12 foe, Baylor:

Baylor named best college football team in the state of Texas

CBS Sports went state by state, naming the top Divison I school in all 50 states. Baylor represents the state of Texas, not the Longhorns.

Throughout the state of Texas, there are 21 Division I college football teams, spanning throughout the FBS and FCS. Spanning from big-time programs such as Texas, Baylor, and TCU, all the way to smaller schools such as Houston Baptist and Tarleton State.

CBS Sports went state by state, naming the top Divison I school in all 50 states. Before revealing the winner within the state of Texas, they laid out some guidelines.

Picking a team is not based on historical success, only from last season. Things such as head-to-head matchups and championships were also taken into account. Everything is solely based on last season, not the upcoming 2020 season.

Baylor represents the state of Texas after its historic 2019 season. The Bears made their first-ever Big 12 championship game appearance after an 11 win season.

Matt Rhule also led Baylor to the Sugar Bowl, the best possible bowl game available for Big 12 teams that is not the College Football Playoff. Even though the Bears lost both games, the program had hit a new height.

After a disappointing 7-5 season, the Longhorns did not deserve the honor of being named the best Division I team in the state. Going into the 2019 season, it would have been a safe prediction to think the title would have gone to Texas. However, losses to LSU, Oklahoma, TCU, Iowa State, and Baylor forced the Longhorns into changes.

In their head-to-head matchup, Baylor dominated Texas, 24-10. It took a Daniel Young touchdown with 0:01 left for the Longhorns to get offensive points. The Bears dominated from start to finish.

To reclaim the title as the best Division I team in the state of Texas, the Longhorns must first win their games against in-state opponents after going 2-2 last season. Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, and Baylor will be in-state challengers this season.

A big win against Oklahoma or Oklahoma State would certainly improve the resume. It has been since 2009 since Texas beat both schools in the same season.

The ultimate goal of winning their first Big 12 championship under Tom Herman would cement the Longhorns as the best Division I team in the state of Texas before the 2021 season.

Four-star WR Isaiah Brevard announces commitment

Four-star WR Isaiah Brevard announced his commitment to the Oregon Ducks over Georgia, FSU, and more.

Four-star wide receiver Isaiah Brevard put the Georgia Bulldogs in his top seven, but it wasn’t enough for the Dawgs to secure a commitment from him. Brevard plays football at Southaven High School in Mississippi. He’s one of the top players in Mississippi that’s in the class of 2021.

Now, he’s committed to the Oregon Ducks. Isaiah Brevard announced his commitment via Twitter on July 4th:

Brevard’s top schools included: Texas A&M, Georgia, Missouri, Oregon, Florida State, Penn State, and Baylor. He’s going a long way from home to play in Eugene, Oregon.

Kirby Smart and Georgia have several commitments in the class of 2021. UGA is doing an excellent job securing top talent in the Peach State for the class. Georgia has landed a commitment from four-star defensive end Elijah Jeudy.

The Dawgs are still looking for their first wide receiver commitment in the class of 2021. Georgia is among the top two schools for four-star wide receiver Malik Nabers.

Four-star WR Isaiah Brevard updates his top schools

Four-star wide receiver Isaiah Brevard has named his top seven schools. Brevard plays football at Southaven High School.

Four-star wide receiver Isaiah Brevard has named his top seven schools. Brevard plays football at Southaven High School in Southaven, Mississippi. He’s one of the top players in Mississippi that’s a member of the class of 2021.

He announced his top seven via Twitter:

Brevard’s latest list of top schools includes: Texas A&M, Georgia, Missouri,  Oregon, Florida State, Penn State, and Baylor. He’s projected to end up with either the Oregon Ducks or the Ole Miss Rebels (unlikely since they aren’t in his top seven).

Ole Miss, Nebraska, Louisville, Memphis, and Kentucky have all been removed from his top ten. Brevard appears to be favoring traditional powerhouses, which certainly helps out Kirby Smart and Georgia’s chances at securing his talents.

Kirby Smart and Georgia have several commitments in the class of 2021. UGA is doing an excellent job securing top talent in the Peach State for the class. Georgia landed a commitment from four-star defensive end Elijah Jeudy. Who will be next to commit to the University of Georgia?

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Baylor Bears Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense wasn’t always a powerhouse, but it was effective enough when it had to be. The running game was just okay, the passing attack wasn’t all that efficient, and the pass protection was missing far too often. But the scoring came in bunches with 31 points or more scored seven times.

Now it’s up to new offensive coordinator Larry Fedora – the former North Carolina head man who came up as a Baylor assistant in the early 1990s and worked as the OC at Florida and Oklahoma State – to work with a veteran attack that has to do a whole lot more to make up for what might be a struggling D.

Charlie Brewer got beaten up throughout last year, but he still managed to keep on producing. He finished with 3,161 yards and 21 touchdowns with just seven interceptions, and he ran for 11 scores, but he took some massive pops late in the season.

Sophomore Gerry Bohanon stepped in against Oklahoma in the second meeting and almost pulled out the Big 12 Championship, and Jacob Zeno is a good-looking redshirt freshman who’ll get at least a look.

Leading receiver Denzel Mims is gone along with deep threat Chris Platt, but the junior combination of Tyquan Thornton and RJ Sneed are back. The 6-3 Thornton averaged over 17 yards per catch, the 6-1 Sneed made 42 grabs, and there are enough returning parts to get the passing game going right away.

Four starters are back on an offensive line that got Charlie Brewer blasted a bit too often, and wasn’t always a rock for the running game. Guard Xavier Newman-Johnson is the best of the bunch, but the tackles should be better with decent depth and options to play around with.

The ground game has the backs. Leading returning rusher John Lovett is back, but JaMycal Hasty is done. The quarterbacks will bring a boost to the ground game, but senior Trestan Ebner and a slew of underclassmen will be a part of the rotation.
