Four-star IMG Academy recruit gets live look at new Florida LB coach

Four-star IMG Academy linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng visited UF recently and got a live look at the Gators’ new linebackers coach.

Like any serious recruit, IMG Academy linebacker [autotag]Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng[/autotag] wants to know more about the coaches in place to develop him at the universities he’s still considering.

At the University of Florida, that would be Ron Roberts, who the football program hired as an executive head coach, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach over the offseason. Owusu-Boateng visited the Swamp for one of Roberts’ first weekend of spring practices.

The experience was an eye-opening one for the linebacker, according to Swamp247.

“I was seeing the way Coach Roberts does things with his linebackers,” Owusu-Boateng said to Swamp247. “Not only that, but seeing the way he interacts and the way they interact with him as well. It tells me a lot just about his coaching or about his leadership, and how he sees his linebackers being fit for the scheme he has for them.”

Owusu-Boateng got a chance to see where he’d fit in Florida’s scheme and how those practices would run. Should he sign with UF, Owusu-Boatgeng is likely to spend time at both the MIKE and WILL linebacker positions in Gainesville.

A return visit isn’t on the books just yet, but an official visit might be in the works. Right now, he has summer dates locked in with Georgia, Stanford and South Carolina. An official visit to Florida might have to wait until the season begins.

Owusu-Boateng is a consensus four-star recruit ranked the highest by Rivals.com at No. 24 overall in the class of 2025. The On3 industry ranking, which considers all four major services, puts him at No. 59 nationally and No. 5 among linebackers in the class.

DJ Durkin emerges as a candidate for Auburn’s defensive coordinator job

Durkin has several years of experience working in the SEC, most recently with Texas A&M.

Auburn may be on the verge of adding a defensive coordinator with SEC experience.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, former Texas A&M defensive coordinator [autotag]DJ Durkin[/autotag] has become a target to replace [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] on Auburn’s staff. If hired, Durkin would split defensive coordinator duties with [autotag]Charles Kelly[/autotag], who returns to his alma mater after most recently spending a season on Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado.

Under Durkin’s leadership, Texas A&M has posted a top-five defensive within the SEC over the last two seasons. The Aggies ended the 2023 season with the conference’s fifth-best defense, allowing 22.1 points and 316.2 yards per contest. Texas A&M’s defense was considered to be better than Ole Miss, South Carolina, and LSU last season.

Before his time in College Station, Durkin was defensive coordinator for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Rebels’ defense progressed in his two seasons, moving from No. 14 in the SEC in 2020 to No. 8 in 2021. He also served as defensive coordinator at Florida from 2013-14, where he coached the Gators’ defense to a No. 3 ranking in the SEC in 2013. In between stops in SEC country, Durkin led the Maryland Terrapins as head coach from 2016-18, where he failed to win more than six games during his stay.

Head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] has added three assistant coaches to his staff since the end of the 2023 season. Joining Kelly is [autotag]Derrick Nix[/autotag], who joins Auburn’s staff as offensive coordinator and running backs coach after spending 16 seasons at Ole Miss. Freeze has also promoted [autotag]Kent Austin[/autotag] to quarterbacks coach after he spent last season as an assistant to Freeze.

Florida football makes new co-defensive coordinator hire official

The new executive defensive coach hire is now official as of Tuesday!

Billy Napier and the Florida football program officially welcomed [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] on Tuesday as the executive head coach for defense, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Gators in 2024.

The 31-year coaching veteran had more recently worked with Napier for two seasons with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns from 2018-19 before moving on to the defensive coordinator position with the Baylor Bears from 2020-22. He was also the Auburn Tigers‘ defensive coordinator in 2023, heading a corps that finished ranked 21st in defensive efficiency per ESPN’s Football Power Index.

“We are excited to add one of the best football minds in all of college football to our staff in Ron Roberts,” Napier said in the press release. “Ron is a great teacher and leader, and he has consistently produced and developed quality defensive players and units. His familiarity with our process and veteran experience as a coordinator and head coach will be great for the staff. It’s my honor to welcome him and his wife, Didi, to Gator Nation.”

The feeling was more than mutual from Roberts’ side.

“I’m thrilled to rejoin coach Napier and his staff, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of Gator Nation,” he responded, according to Swamp247. “I’m excited and ready to get to work.”

Current defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong spent 2018 working as a graduate assistant with the Ragin’ Cajuns and has stated in the past that Roberts was a key influence during Armstrong’s young career.

Zac Etheridge departs Auburn, expected to be hired at Houston

Etheridge resigns after spending three seasons on his alma mater’s staff.

The Auburn coaching staff continues to see shake-up as the offseason heats up.

Late Thursday, Auburn associate head coach and running backs coach Cadillac Williams announced his resignation from the staff to “explore other opportunities.” Early Friday, another alum followed suit.

[autotag]Zac Etheridge[/autotag], a former Auburn defensive back who spent three seasons on Auburn’s staff, also announced his resignation via X (formerly Twitter). Matt Zenitz of 247Sports has reported that Etheridge’s next move will be joining the staff at the University of Houston.

Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] released a statement Friday to show gratitude for Etheridge’s service to Auburn’s staff.

“Auburn football would like to thank Zac for his contributions to the program the last three years. He played a vital role in establishing the foundation of the future. Zac is a relentless recruiter and tireless worker who has a bright future in this profession. I look forward to watching his career develop and wish him nothing but the best.”

Etheridge joined Auburn’s staff in 2021 as part of [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag]’s first staff. He was retained by Freeze and continued his role as defensive backs coach for the 2023 season. It was announced on Dec. 30 that Charles Kelly was hired to serve as co-defensive coordinator with an expected role working with defensive backs. Since then, both defensive backs coaches from the 2023 staff, [autotag]Wesley McGriff[/autotag] and Zac Etheridge, have both departed.

In addition to his on-field role, Etheridge was known as an elite recruiter. Etheridge played a role in Auburn landing four-star talent such as [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] and [autotag]Robert Woodyard[/autotag]. He was also the primary recruiter for current commits [autotag]Antonio Coleman[/autotag], [autotag]Kendarius Reddick[/autotag], and [autotag]JaKaleb Faulk[/autotag].

Etheridge’s departure is the fifth move of the offseason for Auburn’s coaching staff. Offensive coordinator [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag], defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag], defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff, and running backs coach Cadillac Williams have also departed the staff.

Cadillac Williams resigns from position as Auburn’s associate head coach

The former Auburn running back resigns after spending five seasons as an assistant coach under three different head coaches.

The latest move regarding Auburn’s coaching staff involves a program legend.

[autotag]Cadillac Williams[/autotag], who played for Auburn from 2001-04 and served as an assistant coach for his alma mater over the last five seasons, resigned from his position as associate head coach and running backs coach late Thursday evening.

Williams shared his reasoning for the move in a press release. He says that he is looking to pursue other opportunities.

“After taking time to pray and reflect, I have made the decision to resign from my position with Auburn football to pursue other opportunities. I love Auburn, the players and AU family with all my heart, but this decision is what is best for me, my wife and sons. I am extremely grateful for the coaching opportunity given to me first by Coach Malzahn and most recently by Coach Freeze. These past five years on the Plains have been nothing short of incredible. Auburn is and always will be a special part of my life.”

War Eagle!

Williams first joined Auburn’s football staff during the 2019 season under head coach [autotag]Gus Malzahn[/autotag], and would go on to serve on the staffs of [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] and [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]. Following the firing of Harsin during the 2022 season, Williams was named interim head coach. During his time as interim, Williams led the Tigers to a 2-2 record which included an emotional home win over Texas A&M.

Williams is also known as an effective recruiter, as he played a role in landing running backs [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag], [autotag]Damari Alston[/autotag], and [autotag]Jeremiah Cobb[/autotag]. He was also the primary recruiter for offensive linemen [autotag]Clay Wedin[/autotag] and [autotag]Bradyn Joiner[/autotag].

Williams’ resignation marks the fourth assistant coach to leave the staff since the offseason began. Defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] is now a member of the staff at Florida while defensive backs coach [autotag]Wesley McGriff[/autotag] has joined Mike Elko’s staff at Texas A&M. Auburn has also parted ways with offensive coordinator [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag].

USA TODAY Sports grades Auburn’s 2023 season

How would you have graded Auburn’s 2023 season?

The 2023 college football season is officially over, with the Michan Wolverine standing atop the sport as the national champions.

With the season over, Paul Myerberg of USA Today Sports decided to look back at how all 133 FBS teams performed and handed out grades to each program. He graded on a curve, based in part on preseason expectations, in-season performance and considered any special circumstances, such as injuries or big wins.

Myerberg handed the Auburn Tigers a C- in [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s first season on the Plains. While Auburn didn’t enter the season with high expectations, they ended the season on a three-game losing streak and fell to 6-7.

The Tigers performed well against rivals Alabama and Georgia but were crushed by LSU and Texas A&M on the road. They also suffered one of the worst losses in program history, getting demolished by New Mexico State inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.

In response to the disappointing ending, Freeze has shaken up the coaching staff, firing offensive coordinator [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag] and watched defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] leave to take a job at Florida. Auburn has not yet announced a replacement for either coordinator but Freeze is expected to take over play calling duties for the offense in 2024.

Gators hire new defensive coach from another SEC program

The Florida Gators filled it final void on the coaching staff with the hiring of former Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator

Florida football will add another member to the sidelines after making a hire to fill three different coaching positions.

According to 247Sports, former Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] is expected to be added to the Florida staff as the executive head coach for defense, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Florida head coach Billy Napier’s staff is now filled to the brim with 10 men and Roberts is another member of Napier’s past, rooting back to his tenure with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

Roberts worked with Napier for two seasons before taking the defensive coordinator position with the Baylor Bears from 2020-22 and then Auburn the following season.

Current UF defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong spent 2018 working as a graduate assistant and has stated in the past that Roberts was a key influence during Armstrong’s young career.

The Gators will continue to rebuild its program from the ground up before the start of spring practices. Many coaches have been hired and players are being brought in from the transfer portal.

REPORT: Auburn DC Ron Roberts leaving for job at Florida

Auburn defensive coordinator Ron Roberts is reportedly leaving the Plains after just one season.

[autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is looking to replace offensive coordinator.

[autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] is expected to leave the Plains to become Florida’s executive head coach for defense, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, according to a report from Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

Auburn’s defense had a solid season under Roberts and the group excelled at making adjustments as the game went on. The group ranked seventh in the SEC in scoring defense (22.6 points per game) and eighth overall in total defense (357 yards per game).

They were at their best against the pass, ranking third in the conference in passing defense (207 yards per game) and finishing third with 12 interceptions.

Auburn and Freeze parted ways with offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery on Friday and they have not yet announced a replacement.

Marcus Harris accepts invitation to Reese’s Senior Bowl

Marcus Harris has accepted his invitation to play in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Auburn defensive lineman[autotag]Marcus Harris[/autotag] will play one final college football game before entering the 2024 NFL draft.

The senior officially accepted his invitation to join the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl on Friday, making him the fourth Tiger to join the All-Star game.

Harris will join defensive backs [autotag]Jaylin Simpson[/autotag], [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag], and [autotag]D.J. James[/autotag] as participants in the game.

The Senior Bowl appearance will be the first time Harris steps onto the field since the “Milroe Miracle” ended the Iron Bowl, as he opted out of Auburn’s Music City Bowl loss to Maryland.

The 6-foot-3, 295-pounder was Auburn’s best defensive lineman this season, leading the team with 7.0 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

A Montgomery native, Harris earned First-Team All-SEC Honors from the Associated Press this season. He was also named to PFF’s First-Team All-SEC after grading as the fourth-best defensive lineman against the run in 2023.

Like many seniors, Harris has the disadvantage of being older than most players in the NFL Draft pool, but that shouldn’t stop him from being selected sometime on Day 2 or 3 in April.

Tale of the Tape: Auburn vs. Maryland

The Tigers are a touchdown favorite to win the Music City Bowl, but could this game be closer than oddsmakers expect?

The 6-6 Auburn Tigers return to action for the first time since losing the Iron Bowl later this week when they take on the 7-5 Maryland Terrapins in the Music City Bowl on December 30.

Auburn finished the regular season with back-to-back losses but managed bowl eligibility in the first season under new head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag].

On the other side, Taulia Tagovailoa and Maryland had an up-and-down season in the Big 10, winning 7 games in 12 tries.

The all-time leading passer in Big 10 history has opted out of this game, giving Auburn a significant edge according to oddsmakers. The Tigers are currently a full touchdown favorite on BetMGM.

ESPN FPI believes this game should be much closer, as Hugh Freeze’s squad has just a 52.4% chance to win according to the model.

Will the tale of the tape show us this game will be a Dixieland Delight for Auburn fans, or will Maryland fans be singing the Victory song on Broadway after the Music City Bowl?

As always we’ll start with the quarterbacks.

Tigers quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] initial season on the Plains was much like a Sky Dog at 2 AM. The junior was a bit disappointing, but ultimately got the job done for the most part.

Thorne finished the regular season with 1,671 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions as Auburn’s QB1(a).

Hugh Freeze’s QB1(b), [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag], has joined thousands of other players in the transfer portal, leaving Thorne with the keys to the Honda Accord that is the Auburn offense.

With Ashford all but gone and incoming four-star recruit Walker White cooking in the background, Thorne has one final chance in game action to prove he can lead the Tigers into 2024.

As for the team up in Maryland, senior sensation Taulia Tagovailoa has chosen to opt out of this game, leaving sophomore quarterback [autotag]Billy Edwards Jr.[/autotag] and freshmen [autotag]Cameron Edge[/autotag] as the lone signal-callers on the Terps roster.

Both players combined for just 13 passing attempts this season although Edwards Jr. was used as a goal line quarterback, most notably rushing for 3 touchdowns against No. 1 ranked Michigan.

Maryland’s passing offense was explosive this season but the loss of Tagovailoa gives the edge to Thorne and the Tigers.

The skill positions across the offense are a different story. Auburn holds the edge at running back thanks to the electrifying [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] but the wide receiver gap is larger than Old Line State’s obsession with Old Bay.

Maryland often employs three-reciever sets with [autotag]Jeshaun Jones[/autotag], [autotag]Tai Felton[/autotag], and [autotag]Kaden Pranther[/autotag]. Those three combined for nearly 500 more receiving yards than Auburn quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] had in passing yards this season.

The Terrapins fourth target, tight end Corey Dyches, would have paced all Auburn pass-catchers as well.

Auburn tight end Rivaldo Fairweather had a solid season but the edge clearly goes to Maryland, especially considering the Tigers will be without [autotag]Ja’Varrius Johnson[/autotag] in this one.

Auburn’s defense is clearly the better unit on that side of the ball, but defensive coordinator [autotag]Ron Roberts[/autotag] has some work ahead of him due to opt outs.

Cornerbacks [autotag]D.J. James[/autotag] and [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag] as well as defensive lineman [autotag]Marcus Harris[/autotag] won’t be availbile for this one, leaving the 21-ranked defense according to ESPN FPI shorthanded in Nashville.

James and Harris were arguably Auburn’s two best players on the defensive side of the ball this season. It helps that linebacker [autotag]Jalen McLeod[/autotag] and cornerback [autotag]Keionte Scott[/autotag] are staying on the Plains and will be playing, but the loss of Harris, James, and Pritchett will be felt.

Maryland’s defense on the other hand isn’t great but it’s not anemic either. The Terps were solid all year long, but did give up an average of over 30 points per game in losses this season.

Head coach [autotag]Mike Locksley[/autotag] isn’t dealing with any major opt-outs on that side of the ball, making the gap between these two teams closer than the stats say.

Still, Auburn gets the edge here.

There is a reason ESPN FPI has these two teams ranked next to each other in overall ranking. While the loss of Taulia Tagovailoa gives Auburn an edge in this game, the Music City Bowl could very well come down to the wire.
