Texas advances to the Big 12 semifinals with a 5-3 win over TCU

Texas is one game away from the Big 12 tournament championship.

The Longhorns are in the driver’s seat in the Big 12 baseball tournament after taking down the top-seeded Horned Frogs 5-3.

Lucas Gordon followed up Pete Hansen’s tournament-opening gem with one of his own. He kept TCU off balance by attacking the strike zone early and often. Gordon went 7.2 innings while holding TCU to just two hits and one earned run.

Texas took control of the game from the jump. After a leadoff single by Douglas Hodo and Ivan Melendez reaching on a hit-by-pitch, Murphy Stehly smoked an 85 mph slider over the left-field wall to put the Horns up 3-0.

TCU scored a pair of runs in the middle innings to cut the Texas lead to 3-2 before insurance came in the eighth. A balk and an Austin Todd RBI single put Texas up 5-2, creating some breathing room for the late innings.

Tristan Stevens secured a four-out save to take home the victory.

The win puts Texas in excellent position to host a regional next week. The Horns RPI has jumped up from No. 21 to No. 9 in the past two days.

No. 7 Texas takes the series over No. 23 TCU with a 7-3 victory

No. 7 Texas beats No. 23 TCU to clinch a much-needed Big 12 series win.

No. 7 Texas took down No. 23 TCU 7-3 in Sunday’s rubber match behind three-hit performances from Silas Adrion and Austin Todd. Ivan Melendez added a home run and three RBI in the win.

Texas created separation in the bottom half of the seventh inning with two-out base hits from Doug Hodo and Ivan Melendez. This gave the Longhorns some much-needed breathing room down the stretch.

Lucas Gordan gave the Horns another solid start in his newfound Sunday role. The lefty allowed two runs in 5.2 innings pitched, scattering five hits and only walking one.

The Texas bullpen took care of business the rest of the way. Travis Stehle, Justin Eckhardt and Coy Cobb combined for 3.1 innings of one-run ball to cap off the ball game.

With the victory, Texas moves to 24-10 overall and 5-4 in Big 12 conference play.

Texas ranks No. 1 in D1Baseball’s preseason rankings

Texas baseball ranks preseason No. 1 after coming up just short in Omaha a season ago.

We are about a month away from the start of a new college baseball season and Texas fans have lots to be excited about.

The Horns rank No. 1 in D1Baseball’s preseason top 25 rankings and will return the majority of their College World Series team from a year ago.

 

Tanner Witt, Tristan Stevens and Pete Hansen will make up one of the best starting rotations in the nation backed by freshman All-American Aaron Nixon returning as the team’s closer.

In the field, Texas has six of nine guys back from last season. The return of outfielder Austin Todd from injury and Kansas transfer Skyler Messinger help fill the holes left by Mike Antico and Zach Zubia.

Texas will be tested early and often in 2022. The Horns will play 11 games against five teams ranked in D1Baseball’s top 25:

  • No. 19 Tennessee
  • No. 8 LSU
  • No. 14 Texas Tech
  • No. 17 TCU
  • No. 7 Oklahoma State

The expectation for Texas baseball is to make the College World Series and compete for a national title and this year’s squad will have the pieces to do so.

Texas Baseball: Review of the three-game series vs. Houston

A review of the three-game series between the Texas Longhorns and Houston Cougars.

The No. 21 Texas Longhorns (7-5) played a three-game series against the Houston Cougars (7-4) this past weekend, where Texas won two of three contests.

The first two games were split between both schools and were fairly low scoring. The Longhorns won game one by a score of 1-0 behind a stellar performance by Texas pitcher Ty Madden. The Cougars stole game two with a walk-off in extra innings to end the game 3-2. Game three, however, not only gave the Longhorns a series win, but they defeated Houston in dominant fashion 8-2.

In game one, the lone run for Texas came from a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning. The star of the game was pitcher Ty Madden (2-1) who pitched a complete game, giving up only two hits and a career-high 14 strikeouts.

In game two, Houston took an early 1-0 lead run in the bottom of the second, but Texas would rally behind an Austin Todd single and score a run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The game stayed tied with two runs each, which forced extra innings until Houston’s Tyler Bielamowicz ended the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th.

With the series tied at 1-1, Texas looked to close out the series strong on Sunday. Unlike the first two contests, game three didn’t come down to the wire as the Longhorns blew out the Cougars.

As a team, the Longhorns had seven hits on 31 at-bats (.226) in game three, highlighted by Trey Faltine who was .500 for the day with 2 RBI’s and a one-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the cherry on top.

Kolby Kubichek (2-1) pitched 6.0 innings on Sunday, allowing only two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.

The Longhorns will host a one-game series against Sam Houston State on Tuesday. They’ll then begin an important three-game series against No. 12 South Carolina on Friday in Austin.

Four Texas Longhorns receive preseason All-Big 12 recognition

The Longhorns are itching to get back on the diamond after last season’s abrupt end. Four players were named in All-Big 12 preseason honors.

The Longhorns 2021 baseball season is almost upon us as the team prepares to open the season at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

In a press release from the University, a total of four Longhorns have been named to the Big 12’s preseason all-conference teams. It’s headlined by pitcher Ty Madden, who served as Saturday’s pitcher last season.

Big 12 Conference preseason honors

Austin Todd and Ty Madden were the two Texas players named to the Big 12 preseason All-Conference team. Two other Longhorns were named to the Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors for the preseason.

Ty Madden, Pitcher

Madden, who shares the recognition with K-State LHP Jordan Wicks, served as the Saturday starter for the Longhorns in 2020, pitching 25 innings and posting a 1.80 ERA with a 3-0 record. He struck out 26 batters and walked just four in 25 innings, while holding opponents to a .196 average.

Austin Todd, Outfielder

Todd got off to a scintillating start to the 2020 season, leading the team with a .375 batting average and 14 runs scored. He finished with four doubles, one triple and one home run, driving in 15 runs. He started all 17 games, reached base safely in every game and had nine multiple-hit games.

Mike Antico, Outfielder

Antico comes to Austin after an accomplished career at St. John’s from 2017 to 2020. He was a career .332 hitter with 22 doubles, seven triples and 13 homers along with 108 runs scored, 67 RBI and 44 career stolen bases. He was a 2019 unanimous first team All-BIG EAST selection and earned ABCA/Rawlings second team All-Region honors.

Tanner Witt, Pitcher

A right-handed pitcher and infielder from Houston, Witt was a four-year starter at Episcopal High School. He was a two-time All-State player and 2019 VYPE Private School Player of the Year. He was ranked the No. 1 shortstop in Texas, No. 4 overall player in the state and No. 18 nationally by Prep Baseball Report. In 2019, he participated in the Under Armour All-American Game and was a member of the 2017 USA Baseball 15U National Team.

Baseball America reveals never too early rankings, Texas top 15

The 2021 Texas Longhorns baseball team is already receiving attention in Baseball America’s never too early top 25 rankings.

It is really never too early to start talking baseball around Austin. The Texas Longhorns baseball got off to a good start in their 2020 campaign before the pandemic shut down their season. The Longhorns were 14-3 and in the midst of a four-game winning streak before it was ended.

The Longhorns are now looking forward to what should be a full season in 2021, fingers crossed anyway. National baseball publication Baseball America has released their “never too early” top 25 rankings. Texas currently sitting inside the top 15 teams in American at number 11.

The Longhorns are joined by Texas Tech, Texas Christian and Oklahoma in the rankings.

The Longhorns lost two key members from their team a year ago with Duke Ellis and Bryce Elder making the jump to Major League Baseball. However outfielder Austin Todd, first baseman Zach Zubia and catcher D.J. Petrinsky are all back for another season.

Prior to the season, Baseball America ranked their 2020 recruiting class number one in the nation. It will be interesting to see how that group plays for the Longhorns in 2021. One of the top prospects in the MLB Draft went undrafted meaning that Tanner Witt will play for the Longhorns in 2021. His signability being a major concern. MLB teams didn’t want to use a pick on a play they may or may not be able to sign since the draft was only five rounds this year.

Given the players who decided to return in 2021 and the rise of freshman pitcher Pete Hansen, the Longhorns look to rise to the challenge of taking back the Big 12.

Jordan Spieth is back on the golf course and looking to get back to form. How is he looking on the course? Also we dive into baseball talk as the MLB Draft has completed. Texas Baseball: USA Today’s Coaches Poll has Longhorns ranked No 22

The USA Today/Coaches poll has been released and the Texas Longhorns are currently ranked 22nd in the nation.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team has started off hot winning 13 of their first 16 games. In the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic, the Longhorns beat the number six ranked Arkansas Razorbacks 8-7 and dropped a game to the 11th ranked LSU Tigers 4-3. The Longhorns have also played three weekend series going a perfect 9-0.

In the latest USA Today Coaches Poll that was released on March 9th, the Longhorns came in at number 22 in the poll. They are just two points based on votes behind the number 21 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Texas finished seven points ahead of Texas A&M who comes in at 23rd. The Aggies and Longhorns will have a one-game duel in College Station on March 31st.

Following the five games left on their nine-game homestead, the Longhorns will travel to Frisco, Texas for a matchup with UT-Arlington. The team then starts Big 12 play with a trip to Norman for a three-game set with Oklahoma.
