Where each Longhorn landed in the 2022 MLB Draft

Texas baseball has had at least one player selected in every single MLB Draft.

The 2022 Major League Baseball Draft came to a conclusion on Tuesday afternoon.

Texas baseball was well represented through the 20 rounds on the draft. Eight Longhorns were selected this year, Gold Spikes Award Winner Ivan Melendez was the first off the board in the second round.

Four members of the Texas 2022 signing class heard their named called over the past three days. Cutter Coffey, Henry Bolte, Brenner Cox and Wyatt Cheney will likely turn pro over suiting up in the Burnt Orange.

Texas’ eight draft picks ranked fourth among college programs behind a few Big 12 and SEC schools.

David Pierce’s roster is going to have a much different look next season. Pitcher Lucas Gordon and outfielder Dylan Campbell return as key contributors from the 2022 team. Texas has already landed a few transfers to replace the slew of players headed out the door.

Here is where all eight Longhorns landed in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Pete Hansen leads No. 19 Texas past No. 9 Oklahoma State 4-0

Pete Hansen silenced the Cowboys bats from start to finish.

It was an early morning start for Texas and Oklahoma State in the Big 12 tournament. Both teams’ bats came out of the gates slow but the Longhorns tallied a few runs late in the game to come out on top 4-0.

Texas ace Pete Hansen silenced the Cowboys for eight phenomenal innings. The lefty struck out 12 Oklahoma State hitters while spreading out just five hits.

Small ball got the Longhorns on the board in the sixth as Doug Hodo laid down a perfect bunt single, leading to an Oklahoma State throwing error allowing Trey Faltine to score.

Texas would begin to extend its lead in the next inning. Austin Todd worked one of the best at-bats of the season, fighting off nine pitches before sending a laser into the left-field seats. Trey Faltine added an RBI single later in the frame to put Texas up 3-0.

Silas Ardoin blasted home run No. 11 on the year in the top of the ninth as Texas closed out the game 4-0.

The Longhorns will face the winner of Baylor-TCU on Thursday with a spot in the Big 12 semifinals on the line.

No. 7 Texas takes the series over No. 23 TCU with a 7-3 victory

No. 7 Texas beats No. 23 TCU to clinch a much-needed Big 12 series win.

No. 7 Texas took down No. 23 TCU 7-3 in Sunday’s rubber match behind three-hit performances from Silas Adrion and Austin Todd. Ivan Melendez added a home run and three RBI in the win.

Texas created separation in the bottom half of the seventh inning with two-out base hits from Doug Hodo and Ivan Melendez. This gave the Longhorns some much-needed breathing room down the stretch.

Lucas Gordan gave the Horns another solid start in his newfound Sunday role. The lefty allowed two runs in 5.2 innings pitched, scattering five hits and only walking one.

The Texas bullpen took care of business the rest of the way. Travis Stehle, Justin Eckhardt and Coy Cobb combined for 3.1 innings of one-run ball to cap off the ball game.

With the victory, Texas moves to 24-10 overall and 5-4 in Big 12 conference play.

Texas Baseball: Five early freshman standouts

The 2021 baseball season is still young, but these Texas Longhorns are making an immediate impact.

It’s still early in the season, but the No. 19 Texas Longhorns (5-4) have plenty of impressive players on the roster including Zach Zubia, Cam Williams and Ty Madden. What’s been even more impressive has been the play of the Texas freshmen at this point.

It’s always key to get solid play from your upperclassmen, but when the young talent is able to step up and contribute it’s encouraging for both the short and long-term future of the program. While some of these young players have contributed as starters, others are making their presence felt in relief.

Since last season was cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19, players were granted an extra year of eligibility, therefore some of the players on this list did appear in the shortened season last year.

Let’s take a look at which young players have been contributing the most up to this point and will likely continue to make their presence felt as the season progresses.
