The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of two teams, along with the Chicago Bears, that recently inquired about free agent cornerback Arthur Maulet, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Maulet, 30, most recently spent two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before requesting his release in May due to a contract dispute. Prior to that he spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, and New York Jets.
The veteran cornerback has spent the majority of his career playing out of the slot, which is an area where the Jaguars may need help.
Last year, Jacksonville signed free agent Darious Williams to fill that void, but found late in the season that he was a much more effective player after moving outside. For now, veteran Tre Herndon III is seemingly the favorite to be the Jaguars’ top slot cornerback with rookie draft picks Antonio Johnson, Erick Hallett, and Christian Braswell also in the mix.
Maulet has played in 68 career games through six seasons with 20 starts. He has three career interceptions, two forced fumbles, three sacks, and 12 tackles for loss.
