A note on Wednesday’s shooting at Union Station

Chiefs Wire’s thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the senseless act of violence at Union Station.

We didn’t publish any football-related content on Chiefs Wire today. The reason should be obvious.

As a writer, words don’t often fail me. I tend to take refuge in them. In my ability to manipulate language to express one thing or another.

Wednesday’s shooting at Union Station has left me without anything to say.

There are always things to write, and Chiefs Wire will be back to “normal” tomorrow. Posts will be written, content published, and the blog will return to its regularly scheduled programming.

What we won’t be doing, however, is moving on.

While Wednesday’s massacre won’t be a topic of discussion on this forum after this post, it won’t leave our minds.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and everyone affected by the senseless act of violence that left one person dead, nearly a dozen children injured and several others wounded.

We desperately wish that we could offer more than our thoughts and prayers. A solution. Meaningful assistance. Substantive change that would keep events like Wednesday’s shooting from happening.

But we, as mere individuals, can’t.

There will have to be a collective effort by the good people of Kansas City and folks around the country to right the wrong that happened on Wednesday.

Until that collective effort comes to pass, we on Chiefs Wire will wait, anxiously, for a day when the violence ends and people everywhere can live together in peace.

Tragedy struck at Union Station on Wednesday when a shooting occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade.

On a day that was meant to be spent celebrating the triumph of team and city, the senseless incident marred the Chiefs’ celebration and caused chaos throughout the downtown area as law enforcement worked to secure the scene.

LOOK: Union Station lit in red ahead of Chiefs’ playoff matchup vs. Dolphins

Union Station was lit in red ahead of the #Chiefs’ playoff matchup against the #Dolphins on Saturday.

Western Missouri is bracing itself for brutal winter weather ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Wild Card matchup against the Miami Dolphins this weekend.

Despite the near-Antarctic conditions, venerable Union Station in downtown Kansas City was lit red for the Chiefs’ playoff tilt as businesses and citizens cheered on their beloved team toward victory this week.

Other recognizable parts of Kansas City’s iconic skyline were lit in red as well, from the Kauffman Center to the skyscrapers downtown. The storied train station served as the featured landmark in the Chiefs’ posts on social media.

While Kansas City’s decorative preparations for the Wild Card matchup against Miami are a sight to behold, fans who plan to attend Saturday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium should plan to dress for function instead of form.

Red is sure to be the color most in the crowd will wear, but with a predicted high of six degrees, fans could be forgiven for wearing layers of Dolphins aqua, white, or orange underneath their Chiefs attire.

LOOK: Union Station lit up overnight for Red Wednesday

Union Station was lit up in #Chiefs red overnight to celebrate the start of Kansas City’s 2023 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs are among the most accomplished teams in the NFL, and with Patrick Mahomes under center, should have a good chance to beat the Detroit Lions on Thursday in the first game of the 2023 regular season.

In keeping with tradition, Kansas City will adorn itself in all nature of red on Wednesday ahead of the Chiefs’ highly anticipated Week 1 matchup. Though the pseudo-holiday is usually observed on Friday ahead of the team’s usual Sunday kickoffs, fans in Western Missouri are making an exception to the rule given the primetime mid-week matchup.

As such, Union Station in downtown Kansas City was lit up in red on Tuesday night to celebrate the occasion, which produced a particularly stunning picture that was featured by the Chiefs’ social media team.

This perfectly set scene will be captivating for all who drive by or otherwise observe the nearly century-old building overnight and should be a good omen for the Chiefs as they head into their tilt against Detroit without Chris Jones.

As the Kansas City Chiefs organization mourns the death of team matriarch Norma Hunt, they’ve received an outpouring of support from every corner of the NFL, from a message to the commissioner to teams around the league.

In order to pay tribute to Hunt, Kansas City’s Union Station, the host site of the 2023 NFL draft put together a special lighting arrangement in short order on Sunday evening. Here’s a look at their initial message, with pictures of Union Station all lit up down below:

Tonight, Union Station will darken our exterior building lighting with just our east and west arches illuminated in Chiefs’ red as we mourn the passing of Norma Hunt and offer condolences to the Hunt family and members of the Chiefs organization. We honor Norma’s legacy of commitment to our community and celebrate her tremendous passion for Chiefs football – from the very first days of the AFL to celebrating the Chiefs’ victory at Super Bowl LVII. She was the Chiefs team matriarch, the “First Lady of Football,” and an extraordinary woman whose presence in our community will be dearly missed.
