Appalachian State scores six fourth-quarter TDs, still loses to North Carolina

North Carolina barely defeated Appalachian State, 63-61, in one of the wildest football games you will ever see.

On September 1, 2007, the Appalachian State Mountaineers beat the Michigan Wolverines, 34-32. Bettors were so confident that Michigan would win the game, there was no betting line issued, but the game has been known ever since as one of the greatest upsets in college football history.

15 years and two days later, the Mountaineers nearly performed an upset of similar… well, if not “impact” (the 2007 Wolverines came into the 2007 season as the fifth-ranked team in the nation), certainly degree of difficulty. Mack Brown’s North Carolina Tar Heels came into App State’s stadium, saw themselves down 21-7 early in the second quarter, then scored 27 unanswered points to go up, 41-21 by the start of the fourth quarter, and then, watched the Mountaineers score six touchdowns in the fourth quarter to almost pull off the upset. Had the Mountaineers not missed two-point conversions on their final two touchdowns, App State may have won the game, or at the very least, tied it.

But it was the Tar Heels who escaped with a 63-61 win.

How rare is it to score 40 points in the fourth quarter of a game? Let’s just say, it hasn’t happened in a while. Giving up 40 points in the fourth quarter and winning? We’ll go ahead and say that this is even more unusual.

“We witnessed two great quarterbacks,” Brown said after the game of his own quarterback Drake Maye, and of the Mountaineers’ quarterback, Chase Brice. “Those two guys just kept making plays and plays and plays. Every time you thought the game was over, somebody would come back and score! And then, we have to get an onside kick and return it for a touchdown instead of falling on it like we should, or the game would have been over then. Credit to Appalachian State, they’ve got a great environment. What a tremendous job — they fight you until the end. We needed to win a game on the road in the fourth quarter, and we’ve got a lot to fix, but we won the game. There are so many things we need to fix.”

Here’s how that onside kick return looked, by the way.

When App State scored with 31 seconds left in the game to make it 56-55 on a Brice 28-yard pass to Dashaun Davis, all it would have taken was this two-point play to tie it.

North Carolina’s Bryson Nesbit scored a 43-yard touchdown on the aforementioned kick return, which would have seemed to leave them as the winners going away.

But, no! Brice came right back and hit Kaedin Robinson for ANOTHER touchdown with nine seconds left, and a two-pointer would have tied it at 63-all. But Brice fumbled his rushing attempt just short of the end zone, and the Tar Heels could finally exhale.

Brice, in that losing effort, completed 25 of 37 passes for 376 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. Maye completed 24 of 36 passes for 352 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions.

A heartbreaker, to be sure. But as they did on September 1, 2007, the Mountaineers took their best to a team allegedly above their station, and they gave it everything they possibly had.

Tar Heels score 21 straight to take halftime lead

The North Carolina Tar Heels battle back to score 21 unanswered points and take the lead at the half over Appalachian State.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were down early but fought back to snag the 28-21 lead heading into the locker room.

UNC and Appalachian State offenses have been on fire, with both defense scrambling for answers. After finding themselves down 21-7, allowing three straight scoring drives, North Carolina’s offense took off with red-shirt freshman wide receiver [autotag]Kobe Paysour[/autotag] on the receiving end of a 14-yard touchdown.

Then on the next drive, UNC’s defense caught a significant break after Appalachian kicker Michael Hughes missed a 51-yard field goal. North Carolina answered the missed kick with a 21-yard rushing touchdown by freshman [autotag]George Pettaway[/autotag].

The defense for UNC made a significant stop on the next drive forcing ASU to punt for the first time in the half. North Carolina then marched down the field and ended the half with quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] throwing his third touchdown pass to tight end [autotag]Bryson Nesbit[/autotag].

A game that looked sour early ends the first half looking sweet for UNC.

North Carolina vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The North Carolina defense should be better.

The talent is in place, the transfer portal helped, and the defensive tackles are terrific. Now it all needs to come together against the Appalachian State running game.

The Mountaineers are balanced and efficient, but they need their receivers to step up right away – this is one of their biggest areas of need – but that might not be the real problem.

The defense is replacing way too many parts with five of the top seven tacklers gone. The overall production won’t fall off the map this season, but North Carolina’s offense should be able to explode. WR Josh Downs should have a big day, the running game should be fine, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The North Carolina offensive line has to prove it can keep teams out of the backfield.

Appalachian State might be missing a slew of its top tacklers from last year, but the D that led the Sun Belt against the run and was great at generating tackles for loss should be dangerous again.

The Tar Heels offensive front can spring the big, gashing runs, but it was among the worst in the nation in pass protection, and this year’s version is working in almost an entirely new starting group.

North Carolina’s defensive front has to hold up better. Again, it has the talent, and it has the right parts, but it’s coming off a miserable year that got hammered on regularly.

That’s where new defensive coordinator Gene Chizik comes in, but the Appalachian State running game should still be able to rumble as much as it wants to. It all starts with …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

The Appalachian State offensive line. It’s got as much talent as any in the Sun Belt.

The home game environment will play a big role, intimidation won’t be a problem – Appalachian State beat North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2019 – and the offense should come out with an attitude right away.

Will Mountaineer QB Chase Brice keep the turnovers to a bare minimum? Even if he doesn’t the devastating group of running backs will pick up the slack in a fun shootout.

5 things to watch for in UNC vs APP State matchup

As North Carolina is set to hit the road against Appalachian State, we take a look at a few key things you should know before you watch.

After beating Florida A&M 56-24. the UNC football program faces a tough test on Saturday afternoon. They are traveling to Boone, North Carolina to face Appalachian State in the Mountaineer’s home opener.

Heading to Kidd Brewer Stadium, North Carolina is under the same scrutiny they faced in the season opener against Virginia Tech last season, which will be a tough environment to play in.

Can they get it done on the road?

There is no denying the struggles UNC has faced on the road versus when they are playing in Kenan Stadium. They had not won a road game since December 12th, 2020, when they clobbered Miami 62 to 26. After that, they lost seven straight games on the road or in neutral territories.

This game is just the third time UNC will play ASU, losing to them 34-31 in 2019. Since then, the Mountaineers have only improved with a 19-7 record in the last two seasons, including two bowl victories. A team known for their defense could cause significant hiccups in North Carolina’s offensive game plan.

Drake Maye played exceptionally well to open the season, becoming the first Tar Heel player to throw five touchdowns in a career start. However, that was against Florida A&M, and ASU poses a much more significant threat to the offense.

This game will be the first test for UNC, with week zero feeling more like a scrimmage game than a season opener. North Carolina has the opportunity to make a statement and build confidence for the rest of the year.

UNC football vs. Appalachian State: How to watch, stream Saturday’s game

Looking for ways to watch, listen and stream? Then we got you covered with the information you need ahead of Saturday’s game.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will travel to enemy territory to take on Appalachian State this Saturday for a big Week 1 showdown between the two teams.

UNC will play at Kidd Brewer Stadium for the first time, with the only other two meetings taking place on North Carolina’s turf. The last meeting was back in 2019 when ASU got the better of UNC, winning 34-31 despite being held to just seven points in the second half.

The kickoff is set for noon, and the stadium is expected to be loud, with  predicted record attendance. To make things more challenging for UNC, the mountaineers have not lost a home game since December 4th, 2020.

The biggest question for UNC is if they can block out the noise and win on the road. North Carolina had not faired well away from Kenan Stadium, especially last season when they failed to muster up a single road victory.

This game is massive for UNC, and it can change the narrative and state that this is not the same team as last season.

UNC defensive keys to the game vs Appalachian State

A look at the defensive keys to the game for the UNC football program against Appalachian State this weekend.

The UNC football program is heading into a critical week one matchup on the road against a talented and always underrated Appalachian State program.

The Mountaineers return numerous key pieces from a 10-4 season in 2021. This is their first game of the 2022 season, however.

UNC comes in off of a 56-24 win over Florida A&M in week zero and look to avenge a loss to the Mountaineers in 2019, losing 34-31.

The Tar Heels are 1-1 against the Mountaineers all-time.

With the offense looking to ride high again after its impressive performance in week zero, the Tar Heels’ defense is looking at a few improvements it needs to make this week.

Here are the defensive keys to the game this weekend for North Carolina.

UNC football vs. Appalachian State: Game preview, info, prediction and more

We take a look at what you need to know for the UNC football program’s matchup against Appalachian State on Saturday in Boone NC.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will travel 164 miles to battle Appalachian State this Saturday in a huge game for both teams.

UNC comes into the match fresh off the 56-24 victory over Florida A&M. Despite an impressive offensive outing, North Carolina will be +0.5 underdogs against Appalachian, with the expected hostile environment playing a factor.

The Mountaineers have sold out Saturday’s game, with ticket prices being the second highest among all college football games in week 1. The other advantage is that Appalachian has an experienced roster, rolling out five sixth-year players on the roster, including quarterback Chase Brice.

In 2021, Brice threw for 3,337 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Fifth-year linebacker Nick Hampton could cause havoc in North Carolina’s game plan on defense for the Mountaineers. Hampton tied for 10th most sacks(11)in the NCAA and second in the Sun Belt conference for tackles loss(18) last season.

Appalachian State’s defense is no joke, and even with a good offensive showing against FAMU last weekend, UNC will need to step it up another notch.

UNC winning this game would not only serve as a momentum boost for the remaining of the season, but it would also end their road losing streak. North Carolina’s biggest knock has been their play on neutral and away games, failing to muster up a victory outside Kenan Stadium last season. Meanwhile, Appalachian was able to defend Kidd Brewer Stadium with an undefeated record at home.

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

Appalachian State Mountaineers Preview 2022

No, it wasn’t a Sun Belt championship season, and the bowl game blowout to WKU stunk, but it’s hard to argue with a ten-win season with two of the four losses to Louisiana.

Now the Mountaineers have to deal with a far tougher schedule – both in non-conference play and in a tougher expanded Sun Belt – but they should be able to keep up the production.

Head coach Shawn Clark has been kept the pipeline of talent going, there’s enough talent back to expect even more consistency, and this should be another good run for a possible conference title. Again, though, the schedule might make that tough, but more on that in the end.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Preview 2022: Offense

The offense is terrific, and it’s full of enough talent to be every bit as good. The Mountaineers run a pro-style scheme with good balance and efficiency, finishing second in the Sun Belt last year in total offense and scoring. It’ll all continue and could be even stronger if …

The receiving corps has to come together. The top three receivers are gone with the top returning target – Christian Wells – catching just 12 passes for 243 yards. There’s a Next Man Up aspect to the attack, but losing Corey Sutton, Thomas Hennigan, and Malik Williams really, really hurts. However …

Everything else is there. Chase Brice is a veteran quarterback who settled into the job, and he’s working behind the best line in the Sun Belt. All-star C Baer Hunter is gone, but everyone else is back from a group that was great in pass protection and almost as strong for the ground game.

The All-Sun Belt running back combination of Nate Noel, Camerun Peoples, and Dietrich Harrington is fantastic.

The offense has to be outstanding, because …

Appalachian State Mountaineers Preview 2022: Defense

The defense that’s been a killer over the last few years should be solid again. However, it has to replace a ton of star talent that’s been a big part of the production over the last few years.

The Mountaineers were among the best in the nation at generating tackles for loss, they led the Sun Belt in run D and was amazing overall right up until WKU went off in the Boca Raton Bowl. Now there will be a whole lot of new faces.

Second leading tackler Trey Cobb is back at his inside linebacker spot, but there are a whole lot of missing parts with five of the top seven tacklers done. The linebacking corps is hardly starting from scratch – Nick Hampton and Brendan Harrington are good ones on the outside – but there’s missing star power.

Hampton is the team’s best pass rusher, but a whole lot of production in the backfield from last year has to be replaced. Jordon Earle is a 290-pound veteran on the nose, but there’s not a lot of size on the line. It’s going to take a rotation to hold up, and the linebackers will take care of the rest.

The secondary loses top corner Shaun Jolly, but Steven Jones is back on the other side for another all-star year, and the safeties are good enough. They all need the pass rush to keep on going.
