Former Clemson quarterback shares advice for Clemson recruits

Chase Brice saw what this Clemson freshmen class could do against Georgia Tech and shared some advice for recruits following the win.

Former Clemson quarterback Chase Brice was a fan favorite in his time with the Tigers, delivering a 10-point fourth-quarter comeback over Syracuse in 2018, helping Clemson remain in the College Football Playoff hunt and later win the NCAA Championship.

While Brice did transfer from Clemson for opportunities elsewhere, he remains a player Clemson fans think back on fondly, but the feeling is also mutual. It is clear Brice loves Clemson, and following their win over Georgia Tech, Brice took to X to share some advice for recruits who are considering Clemson and want an opportunity to get playing time earlier in their career.

After Clemson’s freshmen class highlighted the Tigers’ win over the Yellow Jackets, Brice let everyone know what this program is about and why that should be important for recruits. Even if he’s no longer with Clemson, the former Tigers’ quarterback is backing the program and making a strong pitch for possible future Tigers.

ESPN’s Blackledge: No ‘real explanation’ for Uiagalelei’s struggles, Klubnik ‘not the answer’

ESPN college football analyst Todd Blackledge can’t really explain what he saw from DJ Uiagalelei last Saturday against Syracuse, considering how well Clemson’s starting quarterback had played overall to that point in the season.

Blackledge, who served as the color commentator for ABC’s broadcast of fifth-ranked Clemson’s 27-21 win over then-No. 14 Syracuse, joined SiriusXM’s Full Ride show on ESPNU Radio this week and spoke about Uiagalelei’s struggles against the Orange.

The junior came in having thrown 17 touchdown passes with only two interceptions across Clemson’s first seven games, before getting picked off twice by Syracuse and also losing a fumble that was returned 90 yards for a touchdown.

“Well, first of all, I don’t think there’s any real explanation for what happened to DJ Uiagalelei on Saturday,” Blackledge said. “Because he had not shown any signs of that over the last five, six weeks. When the season started, there was all kind of questions about him – was he going to fend off Cade Klubnik, was he going to be better than he was in ’21? And after a sluggish first half against Georgia Tech, he’s really played at a very high level. I mean, everything – efficiency, touchdowns to interceptions, his willingness to run, his decisiveness – everything has been better, until this game.

“And for whatever reason, he just didn’t have it. I mean, he wasn’t seeing things correctly, he didn’t take care of the football, both running and throwing. So, it’s hard to say, because he had not played that way.”

Klubnik, the Tigers’ highly touted true freshman signal-caller, replaced Uiagalelei after he was benched following his second interception that came on Clemson’s third possession of the third quarter.

Entering the game with the Tigers down 21-10, Klubnik helped spark an offensive attack that ended up scoring 17 points on his four drives as opposed to just 10 points on the eight drives with Uiagalelei under center.

However, despite the offense coming to life with Klubnik at the helm, Blackledge doesn’t think he is the “answer” for the Tigers at the quarterback position right now.

“Cade Klubnik is not the answer right now for them,” he said. “They just wanted him to come in and not lose it for them at that point – trust their defense, trust their running game.”

Will Shipley’s 50-yard touchdown run with 11:26 to play gave Clemson the lead for good, capping a 27-carry, 172-yard day for the sophomore. Fellow running back Phil Mafah registered 18 carries for 94 yards and a score.

“I do think their running game is solid,” Blackledge said. “I think the combination – Kobe Pace has been hurt, so he hasn’t been in that rotation – but the combination of Shipley and Phil Mafah, they’re two different styles of runners, and I think their offensive line has stayed healthy and I think they’re solid.”

“But they cannot afford for their quarterback to play that way again,” he added.

Klubnik’s performance in relief of Uiagalelei was very reminiscent of the last time Clemson survived an upset bid from Syracuse at Death Valley – Sept. 29, 2018, when Chase Brice took over for an injured Trevor Lawrence and guided the Tigers on a game-winning, 94-yard drive in the fourth quarter capped by a Travis Etienne touchdown run with less than a minute left for a 27-23 win.

Blackledge was on the call with play-by-play man Sean McDonough for ABC’s broadcast of that thriller as well.

“You know it’s crazy guys, Sean and I did the game in 2018 when Syracuse went in there and almost beat them, and it was eerily similar,” Blackledge said. “In that game, Trevor Lawrence wasn’t benched but he was hurt. He got hurt in the first quarter. Kelly Bryant had already left the team and they had to go to Chase Brice, their third-team quarterback, and they didn’t want him to throw either. They were just hoping that they could run the football and play defense.

“And Syracuse had a lead, and you could just feel it slipping away from them as the game wore on, and that’s the same way this thing felt. Syracuse played so well in the first half, and then in the second half, you just saw signs of it slipping away. Maybe it’s a dropped pass here, it was a costly personal foul penalty on a third-and-26 that extended the drive, and you could just feel that it was the same kind of thing happening, and Clemson found a way to win.”

COLLEGE FOOTBALL VIBE CHECK: GameDay’s fumble vs. Chase Brice’s southern hospitality

Week 3 saw blowouts and an epic Hail Mary. What will Week 4 hold?

Welcome back to VIBE CHECK, the post where we monitor and assess the weekly pulse of college football. Each week, we’ll grade a handful of teams based on their on-field performance, off-field shenanigans (good and bad!), message board chatter, and more. This is very (read: not at all) scientific and should be taken very (read: not at all) seriously.

Week 3 is in the rearview mirror, and there were seemingly two options for games: utter blowout or nail-biting squeaker. There were some outrageous scores — Michigan blanked UConn 59-0 — and a walk-off Hail Mary.

Let’s check in with this week’s vibes, shall we?

‘I love that guy’: Swinney, Streeter really proud of Chase Brice

After Chase Brice pulled off his latest heroics last Saturday – lifting Appalachian State to a miraculous 32-28 victory over Troy with a 53-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass on the game’s final play – Dabo Swinney had a message for the former Clemson quarterback.

“I called him and said he and I need to go to Vegas, like, right now,” Swinney said this week. “Man, unbelievable. Unbelievable. His comment was ‘winners win,’ and I loved it.”

Clemson’s head coach believes that comment perfectly sums up Brice, who of course is fondly remembered by Tiger fans for stepping up during the 2018 national championship campaign, relieving an injured Trevor Lawrence in a 27-23 come-from-behind victory against Syracuse to preserve what would become a perfect 15-0 campaign.

“That’s Chase to the core, man. He’s a winner,” Swinney said. “I’m really happy for him, really proud of him. He’s a great young man and has just become a great leader for (App State). You can just see everybody around him, they all believe in him. He’s just one of those guys that finds a way, he finds a way. That’s who he is. I love that guy, man. He’s a good one.”

After playing for Clemson from 2017-19 and graduating in May 2020, Brice transferred to Duke, where he threw for 2,170 yards while passing for 10 touchdowns in 11 starts during the 2020 season.

Since transferring to App State before the 2021 season, Brice has led the Mountaineers to a 12-5 record in 17 games as their starting quarterback while starting all 14 games at quarterback last season and the first three this season.

Last season, he was named the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year and earned All-Sun Belt third team honors after finishing the season with 27 touchdown passes (tied for the Sun Belt lead), 238.4 passing yards per game (No. 3 in the Sun Belt), a 62.1 completion percentage (No. 3 in the Sun Belt), a 151.1 rating (No. 3 in the Sun Belt) and 8.6 yards per pass attempt (No. 2 in the Sun Belt).

In 2021, Brice set App State’s single-season record for passing yards with a league-leading 3,337 to break the previous school record of 3,291 set by Armanti Edwards.

A week prior to his Hail Mary against Troy, Brice and the Mountaineers pulled off a major upset, defeating then-No. 6 Texas A&M on the road on Sept. 10 by a score of 17-14.

As someone who knows Brice very well, his former quarterbacks coach, Clemson’s Brandon Streeter, said this week that he’s “so proud” of him.

“He’s been an awesome kid. I love that guy,” Streeter said. “We had a great relationship when we were here, and I’m just happy that he’s happy. He’s doing some really, really good stuff. He’s at a great program with App State, and man, it was exciting to watch. I saw the replay of that last play, the Hail Mary play, and it’s really a great teaching moment for a lot of programs out there, how important that last play is and why you work it every single week.

“But just to see him succeed like he’s doing has been really, really special. And then not just this week but last week against Texas A&M, being able to come out on top. I’m just excited for him and his journey. Everybody’s got a different journey and his journey is paying off, and it really comes down to him putting in the work and being positive throughout the whole journey.”

Appalachian State scores six fourth-quarter TDs, still loses to North Carolina

North Carolina barely defeated Appalachian State, 63-61, in one of the wildest football games you will ever see.

On September 1, 2007, the Appalachian State Mountaineers beat the Michigan Wolverines, 34-32. Bettors were so confident that Michigan would win the game, there was no betting line issued, but the game has been known ever since as one of the greatest upsets in college football history.

15 years and two days later, the Mountaineers nearly performed an upset of similar… well, if not “impact” (the 2007 Wolverines came into the 2007 season as the fifth-ranked team in the nation), certainly degree of difficulty. Mack Brown’s North Carolina Tar Heels came into App State’s stadium, saw themselves down 21-7 early in the second quarter, then scored 27 unanswered points to go up, 41-21 by the start of the fourth quarter, and then, watched the Mountaineers score six touchdowns in the fourth quarter to almost pull off the upset. Had the Mountaineers not missed two-point conversions on their final two touchdowns, App State may have won the game, or at the very least, tied it.

But it was the Tar Heels who escaped with a 63-61 win.

How rare is it to score 40 points in the fourth quarter of a game? Let’s just say, it hasn’t happened in a while. Giving up 40 points in the fourth quarter and winning? We’ll go ahead and say that this is even more unusual.

“We witnessed two great quarterbacks,” Brown said after the game of his own quarterback Drake Maye, and of the Mountaineers’ quarterback, Chase Brice. “Those two guys just kept making plays and plays and plays. Every time you thought the game was over, somebody would come back and score! And then, we have to get an onside kick and return it for a touchdown instead of falling on it like we should, or the game would have been over then. Credit to Appalachian State, they’ve got a great environment. What a tremendous job — they fight you until the end. We needed to win a game on the road in the fourth quarter, and we’ve got a lot to fix, but we won the game. There are so many things we need to fix.”

Here’s how that onside kick return looked, by the way.

When App State scored with 31 seconds left in the game to make it 56-55 on a Brice 28-yard pass to Dashaun Davis, all it would have taken was this two-point play to tie it.

North Carolina’s Bryson Nesbit scored a 43-yard touchdown on the aforementioned kick return, which would have seemed to leave them as the winners going away.

But, no! Brice came right back and hit Kaedin Robinson for ANOTHER touchdown with nine seconds left, and a two-pointer would have tied it at 63-all. But Brice fumbled his rushing attempt just short of the end zone, and the Tar Heels could finally exhale.

Brice, in that losing effort, completed 25 of 37 passes for 376 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. Maye completed 24 of 36 passes for 352 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions.

A heartbreaker, to be sure. But as they did on September 1, 2007, the Mountaineers took their best to a team allegedly above their station, and they gave it everything they possibly had.

Former Clemson quarterback Chase Brice was in Death Valley Saturday to watch the Orange White game.

Brice seems to have been impressed with freshman Cade Klubnik and took to Twitter Sunday with a message for the new Tiger quarterback.

Brice will play one more season at Appalachian State this fall.  Brice played his last season with the Tigers in 2019 and completed 82-136 career passed for 1,023 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions.  His most memorable performance came in 2018 when he kept Clemson’s championship hopes alive leading the Tigers to a come-from-behind win over Syracuse.

The Clemson Family showed its unity once again Wednesday as several Tigers responded to a controversial take on Trevor Lawrence via Twitter.

Aside from being buried by most of the fans, the aforementioned post about Lawrence (which you can see below) also got a response from former Clemson quarterback Chase Brice.

Brice’s response was retweeted by current Clemson offensive lineman Jordan McFadden as well. Even Lawrence himself appreciated Brice’s response, thanking him publicly.

Lawrence recorded one of the most celebrated careers by a quarterback in college football history from 2018-20, leading Clemson to a national championship as a true freshman in 2018 and concluding his career 34-2 (.944) as a starter — the third-best winning percentage by a starting quarterback with at least 30 career starts since Division I split in 1978, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Lawrence exited as the winningest starting quarterback in Clemson history, surpassing the 32 career wins held by Rodney Williams, Tajh Boyd and Deshaun Watson. He completed 758-of-1138 career passes (66.6 percent) for 10,098 yards with 90 touchdowns and 17 interceptions over 40 career games (36 starts), while also rushing 231 times for 943 career rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns — the fifth-most career rushing touchdowns by a Clemson quarterback in the modern era.

He exited with Clemson career records in career winning percentage (.944), pass efficiency rating (164.3), yards per passing attempt (8.87) and tying for the most wins against Top 25 opponents (nine).

Former Clemson QB and transfer journeyman Chase Brice played his final game of the season today, leading his Appalachian State Mountaineers against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Despite a great game from Brice, who finished with 317 yards through the air and 3 TDs, his team ended up getting blown out 59-38. Brice went down early in the 4th quarter with an injury and did not return.

With his 300-yard performance, Brice broke the record for most passing yards in a season for an App State QB.

Most Clemson fans remember Brice for his massive 4th quarter comeback win over Syracuse in 2018, filling in for an injured Trevor Lawrence — including a clutch 4th-and-6 conversion that kept the game-wining drive alive. It was a win that was crucial for a Tiger team that ended up winning the national title.

Brice plans to return to App State for the 2022 season.

Nice honor for a former Clemson signal-caller.

Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice was named Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year as the All-Sun Belt teams were announced Thursday.

A first-year App State quarterback after playing previously at Clemson and Duke, Brice ranks No. 2 in the Sun Belt in touchdown passes (22), No. 2 in yards per attempt (8.6), No. 3 in passing yards per game (241.8), No. 3 in completion percentage (63.8) and No. 3 in passing efficiency (151.7).

Brice completed 82-of-136 passes for 1,023 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions in 25 career games at Clemson. He was an unsung hero of Clemson’s 2018 national championship campaign, entering in relief in a 27-23 come-from-behind victory against Syracuse to preserve what would become Clemson’s perfect 15-0 campaign.
