Predicting which Texas players will return after the Chris Beard hire

The Chris Beard hiring sent shockwaves around the NCAA. Now that he’s in, which Texas players will choose to stay?

Royce Hamm is on his was to UNLV and Kai Jones declared for the 2021 NBA draft, but there are still several players that haven’t quite decided which route they will take. Will they remain in Austin under new head coach Chris Beard?

This past season, Shaka Smart undoubtedly had the most talented team that Texas has put out on the court in years. Despite winning their first Big 12 tournament championship, the season abruptly ended in the first round for the third time in six seasons.

As always when a program hires a new head coach, it impacts many players future plans. However, it’s still possible we could see the return of most of the main 2020 core.

Beard brings a fiery, championship-level competitiveness to a Longhorns program desperate for an ounce of the success he had while at Texas Tech. His hire will have a huge impact on recruiting, but even more so on the players that are already in-house to take another shot in the NCAA Tournament.

Here are six players that I realistically believe could and/or should return for another season under Beard’s guidance.

Texas loses to No. 2 Baylor, drop three out of last four

The No. 6 Longhorns lost to the No. 2 Bears in Austin on Tuesday night.

After a week where the No. 6 Longhorns lost to arch-rival Oklahoma in Austin followed by a cancelation with Kentucky, Texas hoped to bounce back against Baylor.

In the return of head coach Shaka Smart, the Longhorns were able to keep it close in the first half behind junior guard Andrew Jones’ 14 first half points. They were down only 41-34 in the first half.

The second half started strong thanks to some solid efforts from Jones and senior guard Matt Coleman III. At one point, the Longhorns were able to pull ahead of the Bears by one point, but quickly lost the lead while still keeping it at a one-possession game.

The turning point came after a costly mistake from freshman forward Greg Brown. After a powerful dunk made the score 55-51, Brown hung from the rim and stared down Baylor forward Johnathan Tchamwa-Tchatchoua after putting him on a poster. This resulted in a technical foul that Texas couldn’t seem to recover from and the game never got closer from this point. From there, the Bears went on a 28-18 run to close out the game.

The final score was 83-69 with Baylor remaining unbeaten and the Longhorns having dropped three out of the last four games. Texas moves to 11-4 (5-3) and will look to bounce back against Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Saturday.

Leading Scorers:

Andrew Jones – 25 points (10-16), 5 rebounds, 3 assists

Matt Coleman III – 13 points (5-10), 4 rebounds, 2 assists

Courtney Ramey – 12 points (5-11), 2 rebounds, 6 assists

After a fast start, sloppy play dooms Texas basketball against Oklahoma

Texas basketball was back on the floor on Tuesday as they hosted their conference rivals.

Texas looked like a top team against Oklahoma early on in the contest. The Longhorns jumped out to a 14-6 lead with under 13 minutes to go in the half. The Sooners couldn’t buy a shot early on, then the wheels came off for the short-handed Longhorns. Texas would score just 20 points over the next 12:35 of the first half.

Oklahoma was able to take advantage of an aggressive Texas squad as they outscored the Longhorns by 17 with a 37-20 run. It included a 15-0 run to get back into the game. The Longhorns sent the Sooners to the line 17 times, where Oklahoma made 10 of those shots. Meanwhile, Texas went to the line just eight times and missed four. Texas trailed 43-34 at the half.

Halftime Statistics:

Matt Coleman- 11 points, 3 assists

Greg Brown- 7 points, 6 rebounds

Donovan Williams- 7 points, 1 steal

The Longhorns tried to make a run in the second half after falling down by double-digits early on. Texas had issues with Kamaka Hepa, Royce Hamm, and Matt Coleman having to sit with four fouls. They would get within six with under 11 minutes remaining in the game. The Sooners would build it back to nine, 61-52.

As the Longhorns tried to close in on Oklahoma, the three-point shots were flying by both teams. Texas would get within five after a Royce Hamm three after Andrew Jones drove the lane and kicked it out. Moments later, Hamm would foul out. That would test the bench with only seven scholarship players left available. Oklahoma led 68-63 with under seven minutes to go.

The Longhorns would get within one point in the closing minutes. They would be without Matt Coleman and Greg Brown as they fouled out of the game. Jones would hit two crucial free throws to get it to 80-79 with under six seconds left. However, it was too little too late as Texas would fall by that same score as a last-second heave would be caught by Oklahoma.

Final Statistics

Kai Jones- 15 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals

Greg Brown- 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal

Matt Coleman- 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists

Andrew Jones- 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists
