Jayda Coleman wins NFCA, Big 12 Player of the Week awards

After an incredible weekend vs. Kansas, Jayda Coleman was named NFCA and Big 12 Player of the Week. It’s the Sooners fourth-straight Big 12 Player of the Week award.

The Oklahoma Sooners offense has settled in well in their 12-0 start to Big 12 play. After tinkering with the top of the order during nonconference, Patty Gasso has the best leadoff hitter in the game back at the top of the order and Jayda Coleman’s responded in a big way.

In the Sooners three-game sweep over Kansas, Coleman was incredible, hitting .857 with three home runs, four RBIs, eight runs scored, and seven walks. All while continuing to play Gold Glove-level centerfield for the Sooners.

It’s the fourth consecutive Big 12 Player of the Week award for the Sooners and the second NFCA Player of the Week award in the last month. Coleman’s conference award follows [autotag]Cydney Sanders[/autotag], [autotag]Tiare Jennings[/autotag] (also won NFCA Player of the Week), and [autotag]Alynah Torres[/autotag] who have each had big weeks over the last month.

She’s been on a tear in Big 12 play, hitting .571 with 5 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Coleman now leads the Sooners with a .466 batting average, .589 on-base percentage, 45 runs, and 30 walks. This is her fourth career player of the week award. She’s up to eight home runs and 27 RBIs as she puts together another fantastic season.

The Sooners next go on the road to take on the Texas Longhorns this weekend in Austin.

The Sooners erupted for 39 runs in the four games sparked by Alynah Torres, who had a huge week at the plate.

Then over the weekend, Torres had a pair of home runs, including a grand slam. She finished the week batting .625 with four home runs, 10 RBIs and four runs scored.

For her efforts, Torres was named Big 12 Player of the Week. It’s the first Big 12 weekly award for Torres. Torres extends the run of Sooners who have won the weekly honor, following Cydney Sanders and Tiare Jennings.

Oklahoma’s Bryce Madron named Big 12 Player of the Week

Oklahoma’s Bryce Madron named Big 12 player of the week as he powered Oklahoma to a 4-1 week.

If you’ve been following Oklahoma baseball this season, it’s been an up-and-down roller coaster. Oklahoma is peaking at an extraordinary level and is fresh off its most impressive week of the season.

They went 4-1 and completed a three-game road sweep of a top-25 TCU squad. Oklahoma is hitting, defending, and pitching at a high level right now, and it’s impressive to watch.

Last week, senior leader and outfielder Bryce Madron led the team’s offensive surge. His efforts earned him the Big 12 Player of the Week award. This is the second consecutive week an Oklahoma player has earned player of the week honors. The week before, Easton Carmichael was named Co-Big 12 Player of the Week.

Madron was in a groove, hitting .438 (7-for-16) with a home run and four RBIs. He also showcased elite plate discipline, drawing four walks. When he got on the bases, he was a problem for the opposition, as he stole three bases and came around to score five times.

This is nothing new for Madron, Oklahoma’s best offensive weapon last year, and is undoubtedly trending that way this year. He is hitting .353 on the season with two homers, eight extra-base hits, and 15 RBIs. He leads the team with 26 runs scored, 17 walks drawn, and a .483 on-base percentage. Simply put, he’s the most complete offensive player on the team.

Oklahoma will look to keep the good times rolling when they seek revenge on No.19 Dallas Baptist for a late February loss in a midweek tilt on Tuesday evening.

Cydney Sanders named Big 12 Player of the Week

After a huge week, Oklahoma’s Cydney Sanders was named Big 12 Player of the Week.

It was a huge weekend on the diamond for the Oklahoma Sooners. OU Baseball swept UCF, and OU Softball swept Iowa State. Both programs crushed the ball, putting up 29 runs over the weekend. For OU Baseball, Easton Carmichael was named Co-Big 12 Player of the Week. Now it’s softball’s turn to earn some honors as Cydney Sanders was named Big 12 Player of the Week.

Sanders was awesome last week, batting .714 with four home runs and nine RBIs. All four home runs came in the weekend series against the Cyclones, with three coming during Saturday’s doubleheader. During Oklahoma’s 4-0 week, Sanders also drew five walks.

Sanders is having the type of month that could propel her into the National Player of the Year discussion if she’s able to keep this pace. Ahead of their double header with Tarleton State, Sanders has six home runs and 15 RBIs in the month of March.

She’s in the midst of a huge bounce-back season after hitting just .284 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs in 2023. That came after a breakout freshman season with Arizona State, where she hit .425 with 21 home runs and 63 RBIs.

This season, she’s already hit eight home runs, just one away from matching her total from last season. Sanders is batting .385, has 20 RBIs, and leads the Sooners with 15 walks.

Sanders and the Sooners next take the field in a double-header against Tarleton State on Tuesday before traveling to Lubbock for a three-game series against Texas Tech.

Gavin Freeman included in College Sports Wire’s top Big 12 performers from week 1

After his scintillating punt return for a touchdown, Gavin Freeman was named to College Sports Wire’s top Big 12 performers from week 1.

It was an electric start to the season for [autotag]Gavin Freeman[/autotag] and the Oklahoma Sooners. On the whole, OU did what they wanted to do against Arkansas State in every phase of the game, scoring 73 points, pitching a shutout on defense, and getting a big special teams play.

That big special teams play was Gavin Freeman’s 82-yard punt return for a touchdown on his first touch of the season. He was named to College Sports Wire’s top Big 12 performers from week one for his performance.

Freeman showed how electric he can be for the Oklahoma special teams in Week 1. Not a bad start for the sophomore who scored two touchdowns with the first coming on a punt return in the first quarter. – Patrick Conn, College Sports Wire

Freeman’s efforts also earned him co-Big 12 special teamer of the week.

The former walk-on had a big offseason, impressing the coaching staff and strength and conditioning staff. And he’s been able to take the work he’s done since winter workouts and put it to work for him and the Sooners on the field.

In addition to his electric punt return for a score, Freeman saw an increased workload due to the injury to Drake Stoops. He added four catches for 19 yards and another touchdown on the day.

Because of his speed and work with the ball in his hands, Freeman will continue to earn opportunities as both a wide receiver and as a return man. Week one was just a taste of what’s coming for his career in Norman.

For the fourth consecutive week, an Oklahoma Sooner was named Big 12 Player of the Week, this time, the honor goes to Haley Lee.

After an incredible weekend in the Sooners’ three-game sweep of Texas Tech, Haley Lee was named Big 12 Player of the Week. Lee hit .571 with three home runs, four RBIs, and four runs scored.

For the fourth straight week, the Oklahoma Sooners are taking home the Big 12 Player of the Week award. It’s the first time in Big 12 history a team won four consecutive weekly honors. On the diamond, it’s Oklahoma’s world, and we’re just living in it.

It was Lee’s first Big 12 weekly award after playing her first four seasons in the SEC. For the season, she’s hitting .446 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs. She’s tied with Jayda Coleman in home runs, and just three RBIs behind Tiare Jennings for the team lead.

Lee follows [autotag]Tiare Jennings[/autotag], [autotag]Grace Lyons[/autotag], and [autotag]Jayda Coleman[/autotag] as the Sooners make history with their consecutive player of the week awards.

The Oklahoma Sooners lead the nation in runs per game and are closing in on Virginia Tech in home runs per game after they powered their way to a sweep of the Red Raiders.

Oklahoma Sooners sweep Big 12 pitcher and player weekly awards

Oklahoma’s Tiare Jennings and Jordy Bahl picked up Big 12 weekly honors after the Sooners swept the Texas Longhorns.

Oklahoma received standout performances from their stars over the weekend in their Red River Showdown sweep.

Tiare Jennings, the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, was named the Big 12’s Player of the Week for her work at the plate against the Texas Longhorns. She hit .727 with two home runs, a double, eight RBIs, and four runs scored in the three wins.

This is her first Big 12 Player of the Week award of the season and the seventh in her career.

Jennings is hitting .457 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs on the season. She’s caught fire of late to help the Sooners outscore their opponents 300-33 in 2023.

Sophomore pitcher Jordy Bahl also played a huge role in the series sweep, appearing in all three games. On Friday night, she pitched a two-hit complete game, allowing one run in the Sooners 8-1 win over Texas.Β  Bahl was named the Big 12’s Pitcher of the Week.

On Saturday, with Alex Storako having some trouble keeping the Texas hitters at bay, Bahl came in and pitched a perfect seventh inning to give the Sooners a chance. In the bottom of the seventh, Jayda Coleman and Kinzie Hansen came through with the heroics to give Bahl her second win of the weekend.Β Again, on Sunday, Bahl came in for a relief appearance. And again, she was great, allowing no walks, hits, or runs in 0.2 innings of relief.

In total, Bahl pitched 8.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits, and totaled six strikeouts in the effort. Bahl is 10-1 with a 1.55 ERA and hs 80 strikeouts on the season.

Oklahoma’s Grace Lyons picks up Big 12 player of the week honors

After a big weekend in Ames, Sooners shortstop Grace Lyons earned Big 12 player of the week honors.

It was another strong weekend for the Oklahoma Sooners in their road trip to Ames. In their three-game sweep over Iowa State, the Sooners outscored the Cyclones 26-3 and earned two run-rule victories to move to 30-1 on the season.

A big part of the Sooners’ success in their opening Big 12 series was the performance of senior shortstop [autotag]Grace Lyons[/autotag].

Over the weekend, the captain went 5-for-8 with two home runs, four RBIs, four runs scored, and added a walk for good measure. She raised her average by .33 points to .410 on the season.

With her performance, Grace Lyons earned Big 12 player of the week honors. It’s the second time she’s earned Big 12 weekly honors in her career.

Lyons hadn’t hit a home run through her first 17 games this season. Since returning for the Hall of Fame Classic in Oklahoma City, she’s hit four home runs in her last seven games.

In addition to her hitting prowess, Lyons has gone 22 straight games without an error after she had two against Liberty on the opening weekend of the season.

She had a career in 2022 where she hit .401 with 23 home runs and 70 RBIs to provide a third power element to Oklahoma’s lineup after Jocelyn Alo and Tiare Jennings.

Lyons and the Oklahoma Sooners get set for a top 10 matchup with Red River foe Texas in a rematch of the [autotag]2022 Women’s College World Series[/autotag]. The three-game series will be played at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium. The event is sold out, and each game can be viewed on either ESPN+ or ESPN2.
