No. 14 Texas vs. Oklahoma preview and pitching matchups

Texas welcomes Oklahoma for a rivalry baseball series this weekend.

No. 14 Texas (27-12, 8-4) hosts Oklahoma (19-19, 4-8) this weekend for a Big 12 Conference rivalry series.

The Longhorns jumped up five spots in the polls this week after a road series victory over Baylor. It was not the prettiest display of baseball by Texas, but it was good enough to hold on to first place in the Big 12.

Oklahoma is in the middle of a sluggish season. Skip Johnson’s squad is looking to recreate the magic they had last season. The Sooners dropped a tight home series to Texas Tech last week to fall into the league cellar.

Despite being on opposite ends of the Big 12 standings, Texas and Oklahoma matchup up fairly even from an offensive standpoint. The difference is Texas’ pitching staff has an ERA of 3.68 compared to Oklahoma’s 5.95.

Texas can benefit from working the Oklahoma pitch counts, testing the depth of the Sooners’ bullpen.

Here is a look at the probable weekend starters for Texas and Oklahoma. Both teams are shaking up their regular rotation.

Predicting the SEC format with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma

Here is a projected look at each team’s permanent rivals in the proposed new SEC format.

Texas shuffles future nonconference games against Michigan

The Longhorns will now travel to Ann Arbor in 2024.

Texas and Michigan have flipped the locations of their initially scheduled home and home series. The Longhorns will now travel to Ann Arbor in 2024, the Wolverines plan to make the return trip to Austin in 2027.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the schedule shuffle aided the 2024 exit for Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. The new schedule helped Fox agree to end the TV contract a year early.

“A key part of the deal to let the two schools out early was a game flip of a nonconference matchup between Michigan and Texas,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday night. “The flip was a key driver in Fox agreeing to the deal.”

Texas vs. Michigan will be a premier nonconference matchup between two bluebloods in college football. The last game between the two programs came in the 2005 Rose Bowl, with Vince Young leading Texas to a dramatic victory.

How Texas and Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting classes stack up in the SEC

Texas and Oklahoma are recruiting with the best of the SEC.

Texas and Oklahoma are setting themselves up for the impending move to the SEC. Both the Longhorns and Sooners put together elite recruiting classes in the 2023 cycle.

Steve Sarkisian has Texas recruiting at a high level in his third season as head coach. Texas has pulled back-to-back top-five classes. The 2023 group is the highest-rated class the Longhorns have signed since 2010 under Mack Brown.

Oklahoma followed up a disappointing season on the field with an excellent recruiting class. Brent Venables is adding some serious talent to his roster in Norman.

Each class is headlined by a five-star quarterback. Texas signed the nation’s No. 1 prospect Arch Manning while Oklahoma landed top 10 prospect Jackson Arnold. The two signal callers have bright futures at the collegiate level.

The Red River Rivals boast the top two classes in the current Big 12 Conference. Here is how Texas and Oklahoma’s recruiting classes stack up in the SEC.

Texas Football: Longhorns “must beat” Oklahoma in 2023

Texas can take control of the rivalry with a win over Oklahoma in 2023.

Texas dominated Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry in 2022. The Longhorns ended a four-game losing streak to the Sooners in emphatic fashion with a 49-0 win.

Even after getting the golden hat back in 2023, 247Sports believes Oklahoma is a must-win game for Texas this upcoming year. The Longhorns are listed as one of eight teams that “need to beat their rival in 2023.”

After humiliating Oklahoma last season, Texas will look to do the same in 2023. The next meeting between the two is especially important because regardless of what naysayers may think, the Longhorns have plenty of momentum as a program and dominating your rival only raises the ceiling. Texas has seen immense recruiting success and consistently found talent through the portal. If 2023 is the year that it takes the next step, it’ll likely require a victory over Oklahoma. As the two prepare to depart for the SEC, Texas has an opportunity to capture a firm grasp on the rivalry. Oklahoma will be looking for payback when the two square off, but Texas should be the better team.

2023 is an important season for Steve Sarkisian and Texas’ program. The Longhorns return a talented roster looking to take the next step into national contention. It feels like it is Big 12 championship or bust and beating Oklahoma is a crucial step in that direction.

Bleacher Report believes Texas will upset Oklahoma this fall

Is this the year Texas takes down the Sooners?

With the return of Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy, along with the addition of a strong group of transfers and a talented recruiting class, the 2022 Texas football hype train has already left the station.

The offense has the chance to be one of the most explosive in the nation. The winner of the quarterback battle between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers will have no shortage of weapons to work with.

The defense on the other hand is facing many question marks. The Longhorns need to clean up the missed tackles and find a way to pressure the quarterback at a much higher rate. Getting linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and defensive back D’shawn Jamison back for another season adds much-needed experience and leadership to that side of the ball.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Shepard picked Texas to take down the Oklahoma Sooners in his “way-too-early college football upset picks.”

The Red River Showdown is routinely wacky, and even though the Sooners have won the past four, three of those were by one possession. The Horns have the offensive firepower to break through, which would constitute a mini-upset. It also could catapult them into the Big 12 title conversation.

A win over Oklahoma would do wonders for Steve Sarkisian in his second year as well as help Texas reach the Big 12 championship game for the first time since 2018.
