Timmy Allen’s 24 points helps No. 20 Texas upset No. 8 Kansas

A statement victory for Texas.

No. 20 Texas secured their biggest win of the season thus far with a hard-fought upset over No. 8 Kansas on Monday night.

Timmy Allen led the Horns with 24 points on 11-17 shooting. Allen hit tough shot after tough shot down the stretch including the go-ahead jumper with 24 seconds left.

The electric crowd inside the Frank Erwin Center played into Texas’ favor all night long.

This steal and slam by Andrew Jones prompted the first of many huge roars from the crowd.

Getting the ball in Tre Mitchell’s hands was a key part of Chris Beard’s game plan from the start. Mitchell played aggressively inside, getting to the free-throw line four times in the first half.

A ridiculous buzzer-beater three from Marcus Carr gave Texas a 40-35 lead at the half.

The second half continued to be a back and forth affair with neither team able to break away until Texas hit a bit of a cold stretch late.

The Jayhawks took a four-point lead with just over a minute to play before Mitchell banked in a three to cut the lead to one.

Texas was able to force a turnover leading to Timmy Allen’s clutch jumper to take a 77-76 lead which Texas would not give up.

Carr put the finishing touch on the 79-76 victory with two free throws to send the Texas fans home happy.

Key stats:

  • F Timmy Allen: 24 points, nine rebounds
  • F Tre Mitchell: 17 points, four rebounds
  • G Marcus Carr: 10 points, four assists and two steals
  • G Andrew Jones: 10 points, two steals
  • Team: 20-23 on free throws and seven turnovers

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns survived a thriller over Texas Tech with clutch late free throws and a few key stops in the 67-66 win. It wasn’t a normal Texas game, there were way too many mistakes and missed opportunities, but that was as much of a survive and advance game as it gets.

That makes it four straight wins for the Longhorns – all away from Austin – with the team shooting well both from inside and out. It might have seemed like a grind in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal, but the Red Raiders can D up.

The Longhorns won both games against Kansas, but …

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks are playing well at just the right time.

No, this isn’t the crushing and killing force that last year’s team was, but it has grown as the season has gone on, winning eight games in the last nine – the lone misfire in overtime to Texas – including a 69-62 win over Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals.

Even though there are issues, this is still the best rebounding team in the conference and should be able to offset the Longhorn normal advantage in offensive boards. The defense is forcing a ton of mistakes and Texas has a whole slew of issues giving the ball away.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas ripped through Kansas 84-59 in early January when the Jayhawks couldn’t make a thing, and got by a few weeks ago 75-72 even though it couldn’t hit anything from three.

Can Texas really beat Kansas three times in a Big 12 season? Because it’s good enough on the boards to get by – if not win the rebounding margin – then yes.

It’ll be a terrific back-and-forth slugfest.

Why Texas Will Win

Very, very, very, very, very quietly, Texas is on a three game winning streak including a terrific victory over Oklahoma State on the road to stay in the hunt for the Big 12 championship.

So how is this happening? The run defense has been great, the offense has come up with a slew of timely plays, and the defensive is generating enough tackles for loss to be a bother. Most of all, Texas is winning the turnover margin and hasn’t turned it over in the last two games – it’s not going to give Kansas a slew of breaks.

Why Kansas Will Win

The Texas offense isn’t exactly clicking.

The team has a way of playing up or down to the competition, there isn’t enough of a steady running game to be a concern, and the passing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards in the last few weeks.

Kansas is okay at controlling the clock and slowing things down. If it can speed up the game and keep Texas from hitting the explosive plays, it can keep it close at home.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is WAY overdue for one of its patented big performances out of the blue, but the team isn’t showing anything lately defensively in blowout loss after blowout loss.

The Texas D isn’t a brick wall, but it’s playing well enough to keep the Jayhawk offense that hasn’t scored more than 17 points in five of the last six games under wraps.
