2022 NFL draft: 10 prospects who are perfect fits for the Eagles defensive scheme

2022 NFL draft: 10 prospects who are perfect fits for Jonathan Gannon and the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense

The Eagles will enter Thursday night’s first round of the NFL draft with 10-picks and immediate opportunities to add dynamic playmakers on the defensive side of the football.

Last year at this time, Jonathan Gannon was being introduced to the media and trying to describe his defensive scheme to inquiring minds.

Rather than describe a 4-3, or 3-4 scheme to the masses, Gannon spoke of versatility and adaptation while adopting 4 key principles to his defensive philosophy: H.I.T.S

Hustle

Intensity

Smarts

Gannon has previously referenced the Bears Matt Eberflus, Emmitt Thomas, Jerry Gray, and his biggest coaching influence, former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.

A mostly two-high safety, press-man scheme, that’ll employ a 4-2-5 nickel package in this pass-happy NFL, Gannon’s goal is to utilize cornerbacks that can deal with big wide receivers, while his interchangeable safeties make plays on the backend.

Gannon will focus on stopping the run while mixing up coverage with the back 7.

With Philadelphia looking to greatly improve on defense in 2022, here are 10 prospects that’ll immediately fit Gannon’s scheme.

2022 NFL mock draft roundup: Philadelphia Eagles continue defensive makeover with dynamic defenders

The NFL Draft is now just two days away and that means the final mock drafts and projections from some of the top experts around the country.

Philadelphia has two mid-first-round picks and the reputation for being wheelers and dealers early on in the process, with GM Howie Roseman allegedly having his eyes on several dynamic playmakers.

The Eagles could choose to trade up or down, including jumping into the top-10 for superstars like Derek Stingley Jr., Sauce Gardner, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Kyle Hamilton.

With the draft more than 48 hours away, here are some of the final mock drafts and projections.

NFL.com this week published an article with pro comparisons and analytical team fits for the top cornerback prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft.

NFL Network Analytics Expert Cynthia Frelund uses her context-based data models to evaluate some of the top draft prospects and notes that the goal for her comps are “showing some of the strengths, weaknesses and unknown résumé aspects for each prospect, while offering a perspective to approximate how team analytics departments might view the player’s potential NFL impact.”

Her comp for former Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. is former NFL corner Aqib Talib, a five-time Pro Bowler who won Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos.

Talib played collegiately at Kansas, where he was a consensus All-American.

“Computer Vision sees plenty of similarities between Booth’s Clemson film and Talib’s Kansas film,” Frelund wrote. “Among all corner prospects in my 20-season sample, both rank in the 75th percentile when it comes to change of direction, stop-start quickness and straight-line speeds in pads. According to Pro Football Focus, Booth’s 70 passer rating allowed ranked seventh in the ACC last season (at least 40 targets), while his PFF coverage grade of 78.6 ranked third in the conference (min. 100 coverage snaps).”

As for which team Frelund sees Booth fitting in with, considering factors such as each team’s personnel, coaches and strategy right now, and simply what would be a realistic match, Frelund’s fit for Booth is the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The AFC West figures to be a nightmare for defenses in 2022,” she wrote. “The Chiefs, who have a lot of question marks on that side of the ball, must specifically address the cornerback position. Kansas City holds back-to-back first-round picks at Nos. 29 and 30.”

Booth is expected to be a first-round pick in next week’s draft, which begins Thursday in Las Vegas.

Many recent mock drafts have projected Booth to the New England Patriots.

Podcast: Patriots 3-round mock draft includes an impossible decision in Round 1

If the Patriots had the choice between an elite CB or and elite WR, which would they take at 21?

The New England Patriots would be thrilled to see the options that we saw in Round 1 of our three-round mock draft simulation during the Patriots Wire podcast. There was no shortage of excellent options on the board — and though it was a tough decision, we felt good with who we picked. And that set the tone for the other three selections at the top of the draft.

We picked up two defensive players and one offensive player, likely a starter. Let’s talk about the Patriots, Bill Belichick and this year’s draft class through the lens of a mock draft in our latest podcast episode.

Popular projected destination for Booth as 2022 NFL Draft draws near

The 2022 NFL Draft, scheduled to take place next week from April 28-30 in Las Vegas, is almost upon us.

With the first round of the draft set to take place next Thursday, and former Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. projected as a first-round pick by many pundits, here’s a look at the latest projections for Booth in various mock drafts.

You’ll notice a popular pick for Booth’s draft destination as the draft approaches:

NFL Network’s Charles Davis’ latest mock draft, released April 18, projects Booth to come off the board to the New England Patriots with the 21st overall selection in the first round.

“The more you watch him on tape, the more you like what you see,” Davis wrote. “The Pats have lost Stephon Gilmore and J.C. Jackson over the last two years, so this Clemson Tiger will be drafted to play right now.”

Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports sees eye-to-eye with Davis, projecting the same landing spot for Booth in his latest mock draft released April 20.

“Andrew Booth had a strong ’21 season for Clemson and he’s only going to get better with experience,” Wilson wrote. “The Patriots lost J.C. Jackson to the Chargers and they’ll need to upgrade their secondary this offseason, something they didn’t do during the first week of free agency.”

Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network agrees with Wilson and Davis, also projecting Booth to the Patriots in his latest mock draft released April 16.

“Andrew Booth Jr. feels like a perfect fit for Bill Belichick and the Patriots defense,” Miller wrote. “He is a moldable ball of clay. Athletically, there’s nothing he can’t do. He’s endlessly fluid and possesses outstanding explosiveness. Booth displays good route anticipation but can be a bit jumpy at times on double moves. As he becomes more consistent, he could be one of the better cornerbacks in the league.”

Likewise, Pro Football Focus’s Anthony Treash projected Booth to the Pats in his April 11 mock draft.

“Booth doesn’t quite have the lockdown numbers as some of the other top corner prospects in this class, as he allowed 329 yards across 288 coverage snaps in 2021,” Treash wrote. “However, he does have the tools worth taking a swing on in the first round.

“The 2019 five-star recruit has exceptional feet, good length and brings the physicality out on the field. Booth also made up for lost time down the stretch of 2021, as he combined for five interceptions and pass breakups in his final three starts.”

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay’s joint mock draft for ESPN, released April 19 (subscription required), differs from the aforementioned mock drafts and has Booth going to the Buffalo Bills in the first round with the 25th overall pick.

“Six receivers are off the board, so I’m looking at cornerback here all the way,” McShay wrote. “Booth — who excels in press-man coverage — would be a perfect replacement for Levi Wallace opposite Tre’Davious White (who is recovering from a torn ACL).”

The Ravens traded down for value in our latest seven-round mock draft

The Baltimore Ravens will have plenty of opportunities to add talent to their roster over 2022 NFL draft weekend. They have a plethora of picks across all three days of the festivities, and can use each of them in multiple different ways.

One possible outcome for Baltimore on the first night of the draft is to trade out of the No. 14 overall selection to get more picks and more value. There are multiple teams with two first-round selections this year, so there’s potential that the team could look to trade their one mid-first rounder for two late-first rounders, or a similar package.

Below we look at a full Ravens seven-round mock draft where Baltimore trades down in the first round to pick up more selections.

The 2022 NFL draft is less than two weeks away, and as speculation continues about how the first round of the draft might unfold, consensus is  building that one of the deeper positions in this class lies at cornerback.

The rise of Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner towards the top of the group, joining Andrew Booth Jr. and Derek Stingley Jr., who was viewed as a potential first-overall selection just a year ago, means we could see as many as four or even five cornerbacks come off the board in the first round.

But the talent does not end there. As you will see, there are prospects at this position who might not hear their name called until the third round, but will be impact players as rookies in the NFL.

Let’s dive into the top 11 cornerbacks in the 2022 NFL draft.

Ravens 2022 draft prospect profile: CB Andrew Booth Jr.

We look at a 2022 NFL draft prospect profile for CB Andrew Booth Jr.

The Baltimore Ravens have seen the cornerback become a major need for them over the last few weeks. They’ve lost the majority of their 2021 depth in free agency at the position, including Anthony Averett, Chris Westry, and Tavon Young, all of which played big roles for them last season.

Luckily for Baltimore, the 2022 cornerback class has some special players in it, including what many describe as a “big four”. Derek Stingley Jr., Sauce Gardner and Trent McDuffie are widely thought of as the top-three in the class, but former Clemson University Andrew Booth Jr. isn’t far behind the trio and is an extremely talented player himself.

Mel Kiper’s latest draft projection for Andrew Booth

ESPN Senior NFL Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. released a two-round mock draft this week (subscription required), two weeks ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft that will take place from April 28-30 in Las Vegas.

Kiper projects former Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. to be taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 29th overall pick in the first round.

“The loss in free agency of cornerback Charvarius Ward shouldn’t go unnoticed,” Kiper wrote. “He had developed into a really solid player. The Kansas City defense improved as the 2021 season went along, but it has to get deeper in the secondary. Booth is a smooth 6-foot corner with good ball skills who played both outside and in the slot in college.”

Booth, 21, earned first-team All-ACC honors last season when he led the Tigers with three interceptions. He also tallied 39 tackles (3.0 for loss) ane five pass breakups over 581 snaps in 11 games (all starts).
