Morning mock draft: MJD changes step on pick for BIlls

NFL Network’s 2021 NFL mock draft from Maurice Jones-Drew gives Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Former running back turned analyst for NFL Media, Maurice Jones-Drew, stuck to his guns in his first mock draft. He was perhaps the first to release a mock for the 2021 NFL Draft that had three rushers taken in the first round.

In that exercise, the Bills are the team that selected the third of the trio via North Carolina’s Javante Adams. In MJD’s latest, the pick is switched.

Jones-Drew still keeps the running game in mind, but now the selection is USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.

First, here’s MJD’s thoughts:

This pick is about protecting the franchise quarterback and impacting the interior run game, which must improve if the Bills want to take the next step offensively.

The Bills could take a running back at No. 30 overall at the upcoming draft. However, Williams felt like a bit of a reach before by MJD. By comparison, Vera-Tucker is hitting the nail on the head.

In 2020, the Bills did a great job protecting their franchise, as Jones-Drew calls him, Josh Allen. But that’s not the bigger concern here. Their offensive line did not mesh well with running backs Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. The pair of running backs didn’t have much room to work with and Vera-Tucker could add competition to the offensive line for the short and long term.

Despite brining back the likes of Jon Feliciano and others on the inside, Bills head coach Sean McDermott has proven in the past he does not save starting positions.

In fact, he’s proven so at the offensive line, specifically. Quinton Spain signed an extension and was quickly gone. Vera-Tucker would be given a chance to find playing time in a scenario with the Bills.

Cardinals land O-lineman in Charles Davis’ latest mock draft

They select offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker with the 16th pick of this NFL mock draft.

With less than two weeks remaining until the 2021 NFL draft, it is not yet known in what direction the Arizona Cardinals will go with the 16th overall pick. In a new mock draft from NFL Network’s Charles Davis, the Cardinals go with a player who might not play in 2021.

Davis’ mock draft has the Cardinals going with USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Vera-Tucker can play inside or at tackle. He’ll provide extra protection for young QB Kyler Murray.

The top three receivers are off the board in Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith. So are the two top cornerbacks in Patrick Surtain and Jaycee Horn. That is perhaps the worst-case scenario for Arizona, so then they have to pivot.

Vera-Tucker is not a bad pick. It continues to show the commitment to the offensive line and he gives them position flexibility moving forward. He likely would not play as a rookie but with uncertainty at guard beyond this coming season, having young talent ready to step in is what the Cardinals have been missing on their roster.

16 OTs the Colts could draft to replace Anthony Castonzo

Which OTs are best for the Colts?

The Indianapolis Colts offensive line has been considered one of the best in the NFL over the last few years after selecting Quenton Nelson in the 2018 NFL draft.

The unit took on a major loss when their long-time left tackle, Anthony Castonzo, announced his retirement on January 12. His void is still a glaring issue when you take a gander at the current roster. While general manager Chris Ballard added veterans Sam Tevi and Julién Davenport in free agency, both players should be viewed as depth pieces that will compete for a spot on the roster.

Indianapolis currently only has six picks and only two (Nos. 21, 54) of those fall on the first two days of the draft. Ballard has made at least eight selections in his four draft classes so it will be interesting to see if he stays put or trades back to add some ammunition for him to work with. It will be dependent on how the board falls and if one of his guys will fall to the No. 21 pick.

While left tackle is a pressing need, that doesn’t mean it will be the first position off the board for the Colts. Offensive tackle is one of the deeper groups in this class so Ballard can wait if he needs to, but he should leave Day 1 or 2 with the next left tackle that will be counted on to fill Castonzo’s shoes.

There have been 18 offensive tackles selected in the first round of the last five NFL drafts:

2016: 4
2017: 2
2018: 2
2019: 4
2020: 6

Based on recent history, we can expect at least three tackles to hear their names called on the first night. Teams that could select a tackle before Indianapolis include the  Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Football Team, and Chicago Bears. As it is every year, we truly don’t know how the board will fall on April 29.

Let’s take a look at some potential Day 1 and 2 options for the Colts.:

Colts select OT Alijah Vera-Tucker in latest Touchdown Wire mock

Colts go OT in TD Wire’s latest mock draft.

In his latest mock draft for Touchdown Wire, Doug Farrar has the Indianapolis Colts staying put at No. 21 overall and selecting former USC offensive tackle Alijah Vera-Tucker.

The Colts were not able to replace the recently retired Anthony Castonzo in free agency, which is why their projected starting left tackle were the season to start today would be Julie’n Davenport, who had just 30 snaps with the Dolphins in 2020… probably because he gave up 15 sacks and 76 total pressures for Miami and Houston in 2018 and 2019 combined. Vera-Tucker, on the other hand, had just one collegiate season (2020) at left tackle after two at guard, but he held up very well, allowing eight total pressures (four sacks) in 305 pass-blocking snaps. His “nightmare game” against Oregon pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, a sure-fire top pick sooner than later, still showed Vera-Tucker holding his own more often than not. Vera-Tucker is a project to a point at left tackle, but he’s a worthy one.

Other prospects that were still on the board include EDGEs Kwity Paye and Jayson Oweh along with offensive tackles Samuel Cosmi and Teven Jenkins.

Vera-Tucker is an interesting case for the Colts. He only has one season under his belt as a left tackle, but he shined in that role. He’s an elite athlete and one of the best in the draft among offensive linemen with a 9.03 RAS.

(Courtesy of Kent Lee Platte – @Mathbomb)

Given his experience as a guard and his arm length (32 1/8 inches), some are projecting Vera-Tucker as an interior offensive lineman. Farrar has the Colts keeping him as a tackle here while The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has Vera-Tucker rated as the top guard in the class.

It would be certainly an interesting and even fiery discourse if the Colts were to take a tackle over an edge rusher like Paye, who seems to be a very strong fit at the biggest position of need, but Vera-Tucker gives Indy a Pro Bowl ceiling at left tackle immediately after the retirement of Anthony Castonzo.

Colts’ mock draft roundup: April 12

Rounding up the mocks for April 12.

We are just over two weeks away from the start of the 2021 NFL draft, which is currently scheduled for April 29. What the Indianapolis Colts will do remains a mystery so we’ll look at some mock drafts to see what the analysts think.

The needs for the Colts are pretty clear after trading for quarterback Carson Wentz. Most would guess the Colts are going to add an offensive tackle to replace Anthony Castonzo or grab an edge rusher to help add some talent to a thin group. You can take a look at the mock draft roundup for April 5 to see how some of the selections changed.

Here’s the mock draft roundup for April 12:

Buy or sell Alijah Vera-Tucker for Dolphins’ No. 18 overall pick?

Buy or sell Alijah Vera-Tucker for Dolphins’ No. 18 overall pick?

The dynamics of the Miami Dolphins’ first selection in the 2021 NFL Draft are well debated. We know what is at stake for a Dolphins team that is aligning to provide the best possible supporting cast possible to their second-year quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. Whether Miami opts for an offensive weapon (Kyle Pitts), a wide receiver or a top-flight tackle — expectations are that we’ll see the Dolphins nail down an offensive prospect with their first pick.

But the selection at No. 18 overall is beginning to generate a debate of its own. For quite some time, the consensus among Dolphins fans was that the team needed to use the pick to draft Alabama running back Najee Harris to pair alongside Tagovailoa in the backfield. But the positional value of a back that early feels like it may be something that flies in the face of Miami’s team-building approach with this current regime.

And if the pick isn’t used for Harris, what direction may we see the Dolphins go?

One new contender quickly becoming a persistent option in mock drafts is USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker. There are a number of dynamics that would make Vera-Tucker’s addition intriguing for the Dolphins, — starting first and foremost with his history with Dolphins left tackle Austin Jackson. Miami, ironically enough, drafted Jackson in the exact same position in last year’s draft — and Jackson played that previous college season with Vera-Tucker playing guard to his right as the Trojans’ left guard. So you know there’s some chemistry there. And with Jackson off to the pro level in 2020, Vera-Tucker transitioned outside and played tackle himself this past season.

That level of positional versatility is certainly going to grab the attention of the Dolphins, who prioritized positional flexibility at numerous stops along the way during this 2-year rebuild. Vera-Tucker’s experience at both tackle and guard means the team would have plenty of options to mix and match before settling on the best combination of five players up front; and if someone goes down, the line can be shuffled accordingly.

The big question with Vera-Tucker: does he fit the Dolphins’ previously measured standards of an offensive lineman up front? The team has a pretty consistent “type” they’re looking for in offensive linemen: the team likes size and lower body explosiveness from their blockers up front.

Vera-Tucker showed up at his Pro Day at 6-foot-4.5 and 308 pounds.

This makes him a little lighter than what the Dolphins’ trend has suggested they’ll covet — as Ereck Flowers and Solomon Kindley average 341 pounds as the projected starting guards. Austin Jackson and Robert Hunt, the projected starting tackles, average 324 pounds. This isn’t to say that Vera-Tucker can’t bulk up and add mass, but doing so would threaten some of what made him great as a prospect in 2020 at USC.

Will the Dolphins care to take on that challenge? Or will the team look for someone who fits their mold more clearly? You won’t find us slotting Vera-Tucker to the Dolphins in any mock drafts between now and the end of the month, but the NFL Draft is unpredictable and you can never say never!

Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 3.0

Cory Bonini’s updated NFL mock draft is now available!

Here’s my third 2021 NFL mock draft. I tend not to project trades, but there was one deal that makes too much sense for both parties.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • I project a trade between the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons, sending a package of draft picks from the Windy City, including Chicago’s No. 18 pick to the Falcons for No. 4. Reports say there had been separation between the new head coach and general manager in Atlanta as to what should be done with the pick, until they came to a recent agreement. Atlanta is in a tough spot at No. 4 in terms of balancing current needs with available players that aren’t a reach. I can see this team staying put and drafting a cornerback, wide receiver or quarterback. The relationship between general managers Ryan Pace and Atlanta’s Terry Fontenot could help facilitate this trade.

[lawrence-related id=457182]

  • Several situations that appear to be obvious directions for teams to turn don’t necessarily compute for me. I’m not saying New Orleans, New England and/or Washington won’t add a quarterback in Round 1, but I’m not seeing the scenarios playing out favorably.
