Browns elevate two from practice squad, re-sign Alex Taylor to practice squad

Browns have elevated two secondary players from the practice squad for this week and brought back OL Taylor after waiving him a few days ago:

With injuries and the new rules that went into place in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Cleveland Browns have stayed constantly busy with their roster. Andrew Berry and company have always looked to churn the bottom of the roster and practice squad to put the team in the best place to win week in and week out with a bit of an eye on the future as well.

The most recent roster moves in advance of Sunday’s game with the Pittsburgh Steelers include elevating two players off the practice squad and bringing back offensive lineman Alex Taylor.

Two days ago, the team waived Taylor from their active roster. After he went unclaimed, Berry added Taylor to their practice squad.

The Browns have also elevated cornerback Tim Harris and safety Jovante Moffatt to the active roster for today’s matchup. With Denzel Ward out and AJ Green questionable, Harris provides a depth option at cornerback while Moffatt can help in the secondary as well.

Both Harris and Moffatt are also likely to be useful on special teams, if they are active for the game which is likely.

Taylor is a developmental player who was signed to the active roster to protect against injury concerns on the offensive line. He has bounced between teams this season after spending training camp with Cleveland before returning recently.

Harris and Moffatt will revert back to the practice squad following the completion of Week 8’s game against the Steelers.

Browns waive OT Alex Taylor

Taylor played 4 snaps on special teams in Week 7

The on-again, off-again relationship between the Cleveland Browns and young offensive tackle Alex Taylor has reentered the “off” mode. The Browns waived Taylor on Thursday.

Taylor was active for the Browns in the Week 7 win over the Denver Broncos and played four snaps on special teams, though none on offense. He signed to the active roster from the practice squad after being lured away from the Chicago Bears’ practice squad in September.

He had spent the summer in Cleveland but was snapped up by Chicago after the final roster cutdowns. Taylor spent most of the 2020 season on Cleveland’s practice squad after signing as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina State.

There is already talk the Browns will re-sign Taylor to the practice squad once he clears waivers.

Browns sign Alex Taylor from practice squad among several roster moves

Taylor is back on the active 53-man roster and he’s joined by a pair of practice squad elevations

Facing a rash of injuries heading into Sunday’s visit from the Arizona Cardinals, the Cleveland Browns bolstered the roster with some personnel moves on Saturday.

The most notable move is signing offensive tackle Alex Taylor from the practice squad to the active 53-man roster. Taylor rejoined the Browns practice squad after a stint with the Bears on Chicago’s practice squad this season. The 6-foot-8 Taylor spent 2020 with the Browns as an undrafted rookie out of South Carolina State, playing in one game.

Taylor will help as insurance for the Browns at tackle, where starters Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin are among 10 players questionable for the Week 6 game. Regular backup tackle Chris Hubbard went on injured reserve this week.

The Browns also elevated two players from the practice squad for Sunday. Defensive lineman Sheldon Day and cornerback Herb Miller received the standard elevation to help with potential depth issues. Day stood out in the preseason and has several years of NFL experience. Both Day and Miller will revert to the practice squad after the game.

Cleveland also waived tight end Connor Davis from the team’s injured reserve list.

One move the team didn’t make: Jarvis Landry remains on the IR. He will not be activated for Week 6 despite being designated for return earlier in the week and practicing with the team.

Bears sign former Browns OL Alex Taylor to practice squad

The 2021 90-man Browns roster had a lot of talent and some that were cut loose continue to find homes including an OLman to the Bears today:

The Cleveland Browns had a lot of depth on their team during training camp. While there were lots of questions about who would be kept and if anyone would be traded, the team put together the best 53-man roster they could.

The biggest name cut after preseason was KhaDarel Hodge who was claimed by the Detroit Lions and then renegotiated his contract to cut his cost in half.

A few other Browns players were picked up quickly after initial cut downs and that trend continues going into Week 2.

Today, the Chicago Bears have added former Browns offensive lineman Alex Taylor to their practice squad:

The Bears have some significant concerns on their offensive line but could also be interested in Taylor from his time in Cleveland. Chicago will visit First Energy Stadium in Week 3 and Taylor could be of assistance to the team in preparing for that game as well as giving the team some depth.

Taylor is an interesting physical prospect who has a lot of development needed but, with the Bears limitations, could find use in Chicago quickly.

Bears sign OT Alex Taylor to the practice squad

After injuries of offensive tackles Jason Peters and Larry Borom, the Bears signed Alex Taylor to the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears signed offensive tackle Alex Taylor to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

It’s not exactly encouraging news following injuries to left tackles Jason Peters (quad) and rookie Larry Borom (ankle). Backup right tackle Elijah Wilkinson stepped in at left tackle in the second half of Chicago’s Week 1 loss.

The Bears practice for the first time on Wednesday, so we’ll get an idea of exactly where Peters and Borom are when the first injury report is released.

Taylor, an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina State, spent most of the 2020 season on the Cleveland Browns practice squad. Taylor was waived last month among the team’s final roster cuts.

Browns sign 14 players from the practice squad to reserve/futures contracts

All but one of the practice squad members from last week signed

The Browns coaching and management must have liked what they saw on the practice fields late in the year. On Monday, the Browns signed nearly all of the active practice squad roster from the week of the AFC divisional playoff round to reserve/futures contracts.

The 14 players

S Elijah Benton (Liberty)

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (Louisiana-Lafayette)

TE Jordan Franks (Central Florida)

CB A.J. Green (Oklahoma State)

G Cordel Iwuagwu (Texas Christian)

QB Kyle Lauletta (Richmond)

DE Cameron Malveaux (Houston)

TE Kyle Markway (South Carolina)

K Matt McCrane (Kansas State)

LB Montrel Meander (Grambling State)

C Javon Patterson (Mississippi)

FB Johnny Stanton (UNLV)

T Alex Taylor (South Carolina State)

WR Derrick Willies (Texas Tech)

The only practice squad player from last week who did not sign with the team is CB Donovan Olumba, who was signed during last week.

Players signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s business year. That takes place on March 17. It ties them to the Browns through that period instead of them being street free agents.

Browns elevate 2 from practice squad for AFC divisional round game

Both are standard elevations with nobody sidelined due to COVID-19

The Cleveland Browns elevated two offensive players from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s AFC divisional round game in Kansas City. Offensive tackle Alex Taylor and tight end Kyle Markway were elevated to face the Chiefs.

Both Taylor and Markway are standard elevations from the practice squad. In recent weeks the Browns have used the COVID-19 elevation, which is different. With all the Browns players off the reserve/COVID-19 list after left guard Joel Bitonio was activated on Friday, there is no need for those this week.

The elevations come at positions where the Browns have some injury concerns. Right tackle Jack Conklin is questionable with a knee/hamstring injury, and normal backup tackle Chris Hubbard is on injured reserve. That leaves only Kendall Lamm in reserve prior to elevating Taylor. Two tight ends, David Njoku and Stephen Carlson, are also questionable for Sunday’s game.

Inactive players for the Browns in the wild-card game vs. the Steelers

Ja’Marcus Bradley and Tedric Thompson highlight the list

With no head coach Kevin Stefanski in the stadium, acting head coach Mike Priefer was responsible for creating the Cleveland Browns list of inactive for the wild-card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Faced with depth issues due to lingering COVID-19 cases, the Browns shifted around the roster with the announced inactive players. It includes some recent newcomers to the team as well as practice squad elevation players for the game:

WR Marvin Hall

CB Brian Allen

S Jovante Moffatt

S Tedric Thompson

T Alex Taylor

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley

Of the inactives, the only player who figured to plausibly see any action was Bradley.

The good news is, all seven of the players who were questionable for the game are active.

Browns elevate 3 players from the practice squad to the active roster

A..J. Green designated as a COVID-19 replacement is not a good sign for Denzel Ward

The Browns were busy getting the dilapidated roster back up as strong as possible for Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh. Aside from activating three players from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team also elevated three players from the practice squad to the active roster for the wild-card game against the Steelers.

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley, CB A.J. Green and OT Alex Taylor were all elevated on Saturday. Green was designated as a COVID-19 replacement, while Taylor and Bradley were deemed standard elevations.

That doesn’t seem like good news for Denzel Ward to play. Ward is the only cornerback on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and the protocols for elevation dictate a player designated as a COVID-19 replacement must directly fill a hole created by someone on the reserve list.

There was some additional good news. Safety Jovante Moffatt was cleared from being a close contact to an infected person and was reactivated.

In addition to the elevations, the Browns also released DL Joey Ivie from the practice squad.

Browns activate Karl Joseph, sign OL in a flurry of roster moves

The Browns were busy restocking the active roster on Saturday

Cleveland was a busy football team on Saturday. The Browns made a series of roster moves to bolster the team in advance of Sunday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Foremost among the moves is the official activation of safety Karl Joseph from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Joseph was a close contact of a positive test earlier in the week, and the veteran safety cleared protocols in time for the game.

There is also a new addition to the roster. The Browns signed offensive lineman Blake Hance from the New York Jets practice squad. Hance is in his second NFL season, though he has not yet played in a regular-season game. He spent time in his rookie season with Washington, where he played under Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan. He played tackle at Northwestern in college but has also spent time at guard in his NFL stops.

The Browns also elevated three players from the practice squad to the active roster. Offensive tackle Alex Taylor, LB Montrel Meander and offensive guard Cordel Igwuagwu were all elevated for the game. Igwuagwu was a standard elevation, while Taylor and Meander were both designated as COVID-19 replacement players.
