AFC East offseason: Jets’ Quinnen Williams arrested at airport

Buffalo Bills’ AFC East rival, New York Jets, DT Quinnen Williams arrested.

The New York Jets offseason is not off to a hot start. With free agency just around the corner, the team has to worry about their 2019 first-round pick, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

On Thursday evening, Williams was arrested LaGuardia Airport in New York, Jets Wire reports. Williams was charged with illegal possession of a handgun.

Williams was boarding a flight with a Glock 19 handgun when he was arrested. Williams had a permit for the gun in his home state of Alabama. It is illegal to carry a handgun in New York City without a city license.

Williams was the third-overall pick in last year’s draft and was on the only defensive tackle selected ahead of the Bills’ Ed Oliver at No. 9 overall.

The Jets acknowledged they were aware of the situation but had no further comment.

The 22-year-old’s arrest comes after an underwhelming rookie season.  In 13 games, Williams recorded only 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He battled injuries during the first pro season as well.

AFC East offseason: Patriots to bring Jason McCourty back

Buffalo Bills’ AFC East rival, New England Patriots, have re-signed CB Jason McCourty.

The Patriots intend to bring back at least one of the McCourty brothers, Jason.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Patriots will bring back Jason McCourty via the option on his contract. The one-year option is worth up to $5.5 million next season.

Per Patriots Wire, Jason McCourty will be the team’s second or third cornerback in the New England secondary, behind former Bill Stephon Gilmore.

Jason McCourty joined the Patriots via trade in 2018.

So now what will now happen with the other twin, Devin? The two have previously said they don’t have to be connected in 2020.

Devin McCourty, a safety, has played his entire career with the Patriots. He had 58 tackles, seven passes defended and five interceptions last season, so if he does test the market, he could see a pretty penny.

In 12 games played last season thanks to a groin issue, Jason McCourty had 40 tackles, six passes defended and one interception last season.

AFC East: Tom Brady, Bill Belichick have talk that ‘didn’t go well’ (report)

Reports indicate a phone call between Patriots QB Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick recently went bad.

One of the biggest free agent stories this off season is the landing spot of Tom Brady in 2020. Arguably one of the greatest to ever step on a football field, Brady has been a wrecking ball for the rest of the AFC East.

Since the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine last week, reports have mostly indicated that there’s a negative vibe between the team and Hall of Famer. The latest indicates more of that.

Per Patriots Wire, there was a conversation by phone between head coach Bill Belichick and Brady to work out some details pertaining to Brady returning to New England. Also, those same reports claim that the call did not sound good for a Brady return to the Patriots in 2020.

While this could be quite the bombshell, all reports should be taken with a grain of salt, until officially announced by the parties directly involved. There also has been no indication that the two sides won’t continue talking.

It’s understandable though, if you can look at this through the eyes of Brady. Brady has sacrificed a higher and fair salary for the sake of the team, and to put adequate talent around him, and this season, that did not occur. While other quarterbacks around the league have made significantly more money from their respective teams than he did, Brady could finally wants a return on his selflessness from a financial standpoint.

The report of the phone call however, corroborates with several stories that have come out since the conclusion of the Patriots season against the Titans over Wild Card weekend. There has been numerous discussions about Brady being unhappy with his situation in New England, and an apparent rift that has grown between himself and Belichick over the last several years.

Julian Edelman and Brady were even seen at a Syracuse basketball game last week, and an on-camera moment that raised some eyebrows. Edelman kept saying “He’s coming back, he’s coming back” to which Brady smirked and possibly said “he”s not” There was even video of a video chat between Brady and Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, leading some to speculate that he might have a future in Tennessee.

Aside from Tennessee, there are several other potential and rumored destinations for the 42-year-old quarterback, including the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and more recently, the San Francisco 49ers. Current betting odds have a return to New England as most likely, but followed closely by signing with the Raiders and Titans with many Las Vegas oddsmakers.

Whatever does transpire this off season between Brady and the Patriots organization, it will have ripple effects across the NFL, and sure to truly open up the competition in the AFC East next year, for the first time since the Brady-Belichick era began.

2020 NFL Futures Betting: AFC East Division Winner

Analyzing the 2020 NFL futures odds for which team will win the AFC East Division, with sports betting picks, tips and best bets.

For the last two decades, the AFC East has belonged to the New England Patriots. Since the 2003 season, the Patriots have won the division every year, except for the 2008 season when Tom Brady tore his ACL. The Patriots still went on to win 11 games that season, but it was the Miami Dolphins who wore the AFC East Crown.

Will things change in 2020 in the AFC East as Brady could be on the move? Could another team sneak up and pass the Patriots inside the division? Here are the betting odds for each team to win the AFC East in 2020.

2020 AFC East odds: New England Patriots (-304)

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday, March 2 at 5 p.m. ET.

As expected, the Patriots are currently big favorites to win the AFC East for the 12th straight season. However, these odds are lower than usual as the Brady situation hangs over the fate of the entire franchise.

Even if the Patriots were to lose Brady, their defense, along with coach Bill Belichick makes this team tough to bet against. In all likelihood, Brady should return, and the Patriots will once again be one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl. At their current odds, the Patriots are still a good bet to win the division. In fact, consider them a value play right now as Brady’s future is still in question.

2020 AFC East odds: Buffalo Bills (+325)

If you want to fade the Patriots, betting on the Bills at more than 3-1 to win the division isn’t a bad way to go. Under coach Sean McDermott, the Bills have gone 25-23 over the last three seasons. Their best year came in 2019 when they went 10-6 and made the playoffs.

The Bills have an incredibly talented roster on both sides of the ball, but they need QB Josh Allen to continue to take steps forward as a passer. With their elite defense and top-tier run game, it’s reasonable to think Buffalo could reach double-digit wins in 2020. Don’t be afraid of betting on this hard-nosed Bills team next season.

2020 AFC East odds: New York Jets (+1000)

After the Patriots and the Bills, there is a big gap between the next tier of teams in the division. The Jets come in at 10-1 underdogs after finishing the season 7-9 last year. There is some optimism surrounding this team as it won six of the final eight games to finish the season. While the Jets defense played near an average level last season, it was their 31st-ranked scoring offense that held them back.

If the Jets can find some offensive line help to protect QB Sam Darnold, it wouldn’t be a shock to see this team sneak into the playoffs next season. However, the Jets are still a long way from topping the Patriots and the Bills and should be avoided at their current odds.

2020 AFC East odds: Miami Dolphins (+2000)

The Dolphins are 20-1 underdogs to win the East. While they are clearly still rebuilding the roster, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this team turned things around quicker than most expect. First-year coach Brian Flores was awfully impressive in the second half of the season as the Dolphins earned impressive wins against the Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles and Patriots.

If the Dolphins can find their franchise quarterback this offseason and rebuild their roster with the plethora of picks at their disposal, don’t be surprised if this team makes a big leap in 2020. However, it does appear Miami is still one or two years away from challenging New England or Buffalo atop of the division.

AFC East offseason: Reports skeptical on Tom Brady returning to Pats

Buffalo Bills’ AFC East rival, the New England Patriots, Tom Brady and latest reports from the NFL combine.

The 2020 NFL Scouting Combine is getting underway this week. There’s little football and much more news that comes about at the yearly event in Indianapolis.

However, not all of the rumblings from Lucas Oil Stadium are surrounding the draft. With Tom Brady’s status in New England in question, his future with the Patriots has started to come back into focus again.

And those reports are telling. There are some reports surfacing that it might actually happen… Brady could be leaving the AFC East.

ESPN NFL Insider Jeff Darlington via Adam Schefter used some head-turning verbiage to describe the amount of doubt he has in Brady, 43, returning to the Patriots.

“I’m now at the point where I would be stunned if Tom Brady went back to New England,” Darlington said.

That was followed up by a report in the Boston Globe. That locally-based outlet in New England’s backyard says “it’s not looking good.”

The Patriots have won 11-straight AFC East titles. While Brady’s play wasn’t great last season, those around him on the Pats’ offense weren’t either. Their successes were carried by head coach Bill Belichick and his defense. While the Patriots still might be the favorite in the division without an aging Brady thanks to the other side of the ball, the gap is certainly closing if Brady leaves in regard to the rest of the divisional field, and that crew is led by the Bills.

AFC East offseason: Jets plan to keep Le’Veon Bell, Jamal Adams

What the Jets said about Le’Veon Bell, Jamal Adams at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

Since the 2019 NFL trade deadline last season, questions have swirled around the Jets and AFC East in regard to their star running back and safety, Le’Veon Bell and Jamal Adams.

Those rumors, questions and speculation continue to present day, months later. The current Jets general manager, Joe Douglas, answered some questions about the status about those two at the NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis.

On Bell, Douglas said via Jets Wire:

“There hasn’t been talk as far as him going anywhere,” the GM said. “We’re excited about Le’Veon. Le’Veon has been a great teammate. I can’t tell you how great he’s been. … We’re excited to have him.”

Jets head coach Adam Gase also discussed Bell in a praise-filled way.

“He’s been great for us,” Gase said. “He’s done everything I’ve asked him to do. He tried to do things the right way. What anybody else says, I think we’re to the point where we really don’t care. As long as our relationship is good, we’re good.”

On Adams, his contract needs extending as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. Douglas said the team has had “some preliminary discussions” with Adams on an extension, adding that both the club and player want him to be a “Jet for life.”

The reasons for the bad blood differ. Bell was signed to a big contract by the Jets last offseason, but their former GM signed it and Gase was reportedly not on board with it. Douglas wasn’t the guy who signed Bell, so could he try and move him? On Adams, he was a player that the Jets also were reportedly “shopping” near the deadline, to the surprise of many. So there was some hurt feelings there.

But as things sit now… in February… those two with face the Bills next season.

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: AFC East Edition

Chargers Wire lists one pending free agent from each team in the AFC East that the Los Angeles Chargers could target.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to enter free agency with the most salary cap available since Tom Telesco took over as general manager in 2013.

Even though the franchise has some in-house players that will need to get paid, there’s a great chance that Telesco and company will be aggressive in signing other soon-to-be free agents to bolster an already talented roster, with the hopes of making a quick turnaround after finishing 5-11 in 2019.

With that being said, we are going to list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A. Next up is the AFC East.

Buffalo Bills – G Quinton Spain

Maddie Meyer/Getty Images

The Chargers could be looking to find starters at both guard spots this offseason. Michael Schofield is a pending free agent. Forrest Lamp hasn’t been able to stay healthy, and Dan Feeney’s play has been a mixed bag of results.

Spain joined the Bills this past year after spending his first four seasons in the league with the Titans. He became a key piece of the Bills remodeled offensive line, playing every snap (1,063) while not allowing a sack during the entire 2019 regular season.

Spain signed with Buffalo on a one-year, “prove-it” deal, but after proving his worth, he will require a little bit more. A three-year deal worth $21 million would be reasonable to acquire the 28-year old.

AFC East offseason: Chargers, Raiders reportedly pursuing Tom Brady

The Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders are both reportedly interested in New England Patriots QB Tom Brady.

Will the Bills not have to worry about Patriots quarterback Tom Brady… finally?

His future in New England has been a topic of speculation for some time now. But over the weekend, some new potential landing spots started grabbing some attention.

According to two separate reports, the Chargers and the Raiders are two teams that could chase Brady this offseason, if he becomes available.

Starting with the Chargers, they very much have an opening for a quarterback as its expected that they’re moving on from Phillip Rivers after he has spent his entire career there. Rivers even moved his family to Florida.

The Raiders do have Derek Carr under center and could view Brady as an upgrade. Looking even further down that rabbit hole, the Raiders in Oakland are no more. It’s the Las Vegas Raiders now and making a big splash like signing Brady could certainly be an attention grabber in their new city.

If the Bills do see their AFC East rival in Brady skip town, he’ll be out of the division. But maybe not completely out of sight. Buffalo is slated to play the Chargers at home and the Raiders on the road in 2020.

Rest of the AFC East is trending up while Patriots are trending down

In the AFC East, the New England Patriots may be handing off their crowns to a new batch of talent.

Since the turn of the century, the AFC East has been almost completely dominated by the New England Patriots. They’ve won 17 of 20 potential division titles. However, as we enter the third decade, the Patriots appear to be the only team in the AFC East that’s trending down.

New England may have won 12 games this past season, but an average viewer can tell that it wasn’t the same performance we’re used to seeing. They faced the second-easiest schedule in the NFL, and they took advantage. Three of their four losses came against the other three division winners from the AFC, and the final loss came in an extremely important Week 17 bout with the Dolphins that would cost the Patriots a first-round bye.

A team that is often considered the golden  standard for stability has a lot of questions for the future. Tom Brady is set to be a free agent for the first time in his career. And while it’s possible he returns, it’s not a guarantee. The Patriots have many other important players that are pending free agents including starting left guard Joe Thuney, longtime safety Devin McCourty, and Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee linebacker Kyle Van Noy. With Core special teamer and noted leader Matthew Slater and linebacker Elandon Roberts could also be out the door with their contracts expiring. Four of the teams’ seven captains are not guaranteed to return.

But, what about the rest of the division?

Buffalo

In 2019, the Bills made the playoffs for the second time in three years. They finished the season 10-6 and were constantly breathing down the neck of the Patriots. With Josh Allen under center, the Bills took a four-game jump this year in part to his growth. The former seventh overall pick’s passer rating rose nearly 20 points, while he saw increases in his passing yards, passing touchdowns, and a drop in his interceptions. Don’t forget that Allen is also one of the biggest running threats from the quarterback position. Since he entered the league, he’s scored 17 touchdowns on the ground, the most by any quarterback in the last two years — Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson are tied for second with 12.

It starts at the top in Buffalo. General Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott have done a great job of putting together three great units. Last offseason, they bolstered their offense by bringing in receiver John Brown in free agency and running back Devin Singletary in the draft. Brown eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in his first season in Buffalo, and Singletary, despite missing time with a hamstring injury, totaled nearly 800 rushing yards at a 5.1 yards per attempt pace.

That’s before mentioning their defense which was clearly their best group in 2019. Buffalo’s defense gave up 16.5 points per game (second-fewest) and 196.6 passing yards per game (fourth-fewest). A lot of those numbers are helped by third-year cornerback and 2019 First-Team All-Pro Tre’Davious White. According to Pro Football Focus, White has allowed a 57.7 passer rating when being targeted over the past two seasons which is the third-lowest rating among eligible cornerbacks. While they have received a lot of key contributions from veterans like Jerry Hughes and Lorenzo Alexander, there are a lot of great young pieces on the defense that should be mainstays including 2019 first-round pick Ed Oliver, 2018 first-round pick Tremaine Edmunds, and second-year cornerback Levi Wallace.

I’m not as sold on Allen as I am on other young quarterbacks in the league, but I am sold on McDermott, Beane, and the Bills’ plan. There’s enough in place to make them competitors in the AFC.

New York

The 2019 New York Jets season was plagued by injury and illness. Quarterback Sam Darnold missed three weeks while dealing with mononucleosis. In those weeks, the Jets were one of the worst teams in football with quarterbacks Trevor Siemian and Luke Falk under center,  scoring only 23 points combined and resulting in zero wins. If Darnold hadn’t missed those starts, the Jets could’ve easily been in the running for a Wild Card spot.

New York didn’t exactly have the best luck when it came to other injuries either. In Week 1, receiver Quincy Enunwa, who had just signed a four-year deal, suffered a neck injury that ended his season. The team’s biggest free agent acquisition, C.J. Mosley, went down with a groin injury in Week 1 as well, and the only other game he played in was an attempt to return in Week 7 before he was shut down. tight end Chris Herndon was suspended for four games and ended the season on IR with a rib injury. Top cornerback Trumaine Johnson suffered an ankle injury that cost him most of his season. Starting center Ryan Kalil was placed on IR following Week 8 with a knee. Longtime right guard Brian Winters’ shoulder injury caused him to miss the final seven weeks.

Oh, and don’t forget the whole situation with guard Kelechi Osemele that cost him his season. By the end of the year, three of the five projected offensive line starters missed at least seven games.

In total, the Jets had $35 million of their cap on injured reserve, the second-highest of all teams.

With some of these guys coming back and some coming off the books, the Jets will have much more talent and money to work with. They enter the off-season with an estimated $50+ million in cap space and the seventh overall pick in the draft. That should be more than enough to continue supplying Sam Darnold with weapons, re-tooling an aging offensive line, and adding to a middling defense.

There are concerns with the coach, but the Jets have the quarterback. They can continue building around him to solidify themselves as competitors for the AFC East crown.

Miami

Despite trading away a lot of talented players in 2019, the Dolphins managed to win five games, including the previously mentioned Week 17 match-up with New England. How many teams could overcome the loss of a First-Team All-Pro free safety, a First-Team All-Pro left tackle, a Second-Team All-Pro cornerback, and their starting running back all while learning a new system from a first-year head coach? Well, the Dolphins dealt with it and found some success along the way.

Now, they find themselves with a lot of young players who are putting forth an inspiring effort to be the best they can be. On top of that, due to the plethora of trades they made, the Dolphins find themselves with three first-round picks this season – the highest being fifth overall. In total, Miami has 14 selections in the 2020 NFL Draft that they can use to really speed up the team’s rebuild.

Their quarterback position remains an interesting situation. Ryan Fitzpatrick is under contract for another year at a team-friendly $8 million cap hit. Josh Rosen, who the Dolphins traded for last off-season, still has at least two seasons left on his rookie deal. I would be pretty surprised if they didn’t take a QB in this upcoming draft, and they may be willing to take a risk on Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa who missed the end of the season with a hip injury. With these other options, they will still be able to get by if the rookie misses time while recovering.

There’s enough in place to say they are moving in the right direction after one year with Brian Flores.

PODCAST: 2019 Bills season wrap, how did they do?

Buffalo Bills season recap podcast from The Bills Wire.

Josh Allen

With the 2019 season being over for nearly a week, podcast hosts Matt and Jeremy have had some time to properly reflect on this 2019 season. While the way that it ended was not ideal, and pretty upsetting, it was a good year from an overall perspective.

Despite all of the criticism about strength of schedule, a young roster with growing pains, and a lot of “coulda, woulda, shoulda” moments, Bills fans should look back fondly on the 2019. With a solid coaching staff, whose instilled motto of “Trust the Process” has made considerable gains, and a General Manager who has flipped this roster, nearly 100% from before his reign, all signs point to up.

Josh Allen progressed relatively well in 2019, giving more fuel to the Allen apologists. He showed incredible growth, while still making some rookie mistakes, but importantly, has played well enough to leave no questions if he should continue to be a starter going into the 2020-21 season.

The fortunate aspect for this off season is that Beane and McDermott know have a smaller amount of spokes to replace on the wheel that is the Buffalo Bills, and are able to hone in on the most important needs before free agency and trades open up in a few months.
